They need to draft Murray/Mettenberger/McCarron and then just go OL the rest of the way. Get everyone else from UDFA.

when you have a big fat transparent need you need to move up and take your QB...you can't wait for a good one to drop. Everyone thinking they might want one will just move right in front of you. If the Texans were thinking they would wait and their guy would fall to them they were fools....if they didn't like the value and could stay away I'm ok with that.

Agree completely. I feel like we've tried to get cute and get good value at a position of need. Unfortunately that position of need just so happens to be the most important position and we're now left hoping for good value from future backups. There were probably 2-3 eventual starters in this draft and we missed out on all of them.

Bob McNair can't say we are 'reloading' rather than rebuilding and then go into the season with Fitzpatrick at QB and a 4th+ round rookie "in waiting."

We are rebuilding. We've known it all along, it just sucks to have it confirmed
I have a feeling they got too cute too. It's almost unrealistic to think they wouldn't take a QB in the first 3 rounds otherwise.

Well, for whatever reason they selected the guy, after watching some highlights of him, I can see why they got him. This guy, at best, is a starter this year, at the least, he will still see significant playing time. I'm not as down on this pick now as I was earlier.
This guy is like Heath Miller except bigger. He is listed at 6'7" (I need to find his combine measurements). Think lots of post-up TD's (think basketball). Run down, break the plane of the end zone and post-up while a FA QB lobs you a pass that's 10 ft in the air that only a 6'7" guy can catch.

He's easily the starting TE on the Team.

Don't have to settle for Grahm or Griffin as starters. CJ is a legit starter.

IMO 3 starters with three picks = a great draft so far. And these aren't just guys. I think all three picks can be reaaaaaallllly good players.

Why does everyone keep saying this like it's some great accomplishment or some measuring factor on how successful their draft is?

When you have the finish with the worst record in the league, you obviously have a lot of holes to fill. When you have the #1 ovrl pick in the draft and the first pick in every round you better be drafting starters...even past the 3rd round. Houston could've selected a entire different crop of players in the first round and they would've still been likely starters.

I think that was the case , especially after they just made the move up for Nix giving up 4:1 & 5:1. Kinda shows they may not have been interested in any of the QB's remaining.

Bridgewater snatched away (they had to see that coming)
Garappolo snatched away .... I saw it coming , just not NE.

They have 4:35 remaining .... Wonder if McCarron falls that far or if they even take a QB at all ?!

That QB better chuck it up quick .... Newton still on the roster.

Big ass TE...there I said it! 6-5/265

http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2014cfiedorowicz.php

Strengths:
Strong
Physical
Reliable hands
Superb run-blocker
Subtle quickness
Surprising athleticism
Big target
Attacks the middle seam
Leaping ability
Good route-running
Red-zone weapon
Asset in short-yardage, goal-line situations
Tough to bring down
Strong drive blocker
Effective seam tight end

Weaknesses:
Not a speed mismatch

Player Comparison: Anthony Fasano. Fiedorowicz won't go as high as Fasano did in the 2006 NFL Draft. The Cowboys took Fasano in the second round, but that was a reach. Fiedorowicz has a similar game to Fasano (6-4, 255). They both are good blockers who can make some contributions as a receiver. Fasano has bounced around, but he's been a decent NFL tight end. Fiedorowicz could be a similar player.

Not really what I was looking for but if FIDO can get the Pats 2 TE offense going i guess we'll be going that way.

I valued any defensive lineman

Any ILB

Any DB

Any Qb

more then a goddamned TE. But I guess whatever. This is the pick i'll look back on in 2-3 years and say I was wrong or right.

I'm pretty sure it's in the Texans corporate charter that they are required to draft a white TE in every draft.

See, I thought that was gone with KUBES ,but I guess the trend remains. We have 11 picks. Lets draft 11 Te's.

I kept seeing this guy in mocks and in rankings but never scouted him. I like what I see from highlights and wading his scouting report.

OB didn't draft those guys. That would be Patriots GM & Head Coach Bill Belicheat.

OB didn't draft Mallett either .... you guy's give him far too much credit responsibility for his time in New England.

I'd bet he had something to do with this pick though. Ya think? :)

I gave Fiedorowicz the player a thumbs up, but not the pick. I think we need a starter at OT more than we need a 3rd string TE.

Noles; you have got to watch him block.
The last Hawkeye TE I enjoyed watching was Brandon Myers whom I said at the time that the Texans should have drafted instead of Anthony Hills.
And that was based mostly on Myers' blocking.
He has developed his catching skills nicely to the tune of some 120 catches the last two years. A steal as a fifth rounder; I'd say.

Fiedorowicz is as proficient in blocking, but a world ahead of Myers in the passing game.
Give him a year, and I wholeheartedly believe he can become a very good player.
It's too early to count money in the bank, but the guy is very smart and run great routes.
He just might become our QB's best friend.

I'm sure he did .... the point is people keep pointing to his time in NE like he had some great amount of responsibility there (drafted Mallett , drafted Gronk and the thug).

Its possible he put his 2 cents in .... but acting like he was the man in NE , no that's Belecheats team.

I don't know about that. Some people say, "He was the OC when New England drafted Mallet."

Somehow some people take that to mean OB was orchestrating the draft.

I believe most people pointing to OB's involvement in NewEngland believe it was just that, involvement.

He caught 45 passes for 433 yards, which were both career highs. He finished third on the team in both stats but collected only one touchdown. Iowa as a team had a total of seven touchdown passes in 2012. It was a team problem.

He'll fit right in here....:kitten:

I didn't agree with this at first, but I do now after watching all the clips on him.
we're going to have a red zone offense that will feature passes that are taller than yardage thrown for you know. Just run a few steps turn around and get in rebounding position.

Gronk II is coming to Houston! He's also the blocking TE that the Texans have been looking for.

Gronk started out as arguably the best TE to ever play, and you're going to automatically call this guy the next Gronk? Lol! :user:

I like the pick though. I'm glad we got a TE that Bill likes. I wouldn't call anyone the next Gronk though. That's not fair to any rookie player.

Last year he had a career high 7 TDS.

My obvious hyperbole was out of excitement and referring to the type of TE. How he stands up to Gronk once in the NFL is to be seen........but he has some good pieces to start off his journey.

It seems that many of you don't quite grasp how important the TE is in O'Brien's offense. In his only year as the Pats OC (2011), Gronk caught 90 passes and Hernandez caught 79. The year before he got bumped to OC (2010), those two guys combined for 87 catches. In both years at Penn State, 3 of his top 6 pass catchers were TE's.

The guy utilizes TE's and TE was a huge area of need for us in the talent department. Sure we have numbers, but do Griffin and Graham really scare people? I don't think so. Fiedorowicz brings an added dimension as an in-line blocker and receiver. Griffin has potential in those same areas, but it's just potential right now. Graham is an H-Back who will be moving around the formation a lot and not really playing in-line.

Oh and Fido will definitely be the #1 TE this year.

Initially thought it was early to take a TE, but after reading over the scouting report and my lack of excitement over resigning Graham. I became excited about this pick. Glad we have another person on offense who can actually create mismatches.

I really like this pick! It's a classic OB type TE, smart, big, fast, soft hands, & can block! Finally a TE that can create mismatches! A grade. :swatter:

I thought it was goofy to go into the last two seasons with 3 TEs in a two TE offense.

Doesn't make sense.

All About the 'Y' Tight End

If you're going to contribute as a "Y" tight end for the New England Patriots, you need enough size to be an effective blocker and create mismatches in the passing game.

Troy Niklas measured in at the combine at 6'6" and 270 pounds, with 34.25" arms and 10" hands. Those are prototypical numbers for the position. Rob Gronkowski came in at 6'6", 264 pounds, 34.25" arms and massive 10.75" hands at the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine.

C.J. Fiedorowicz nearly matched Niklas, but he came up short at 6'5" and 265 pounds with 33" arms and 10.25" hands. It doesn't show up on tape, but the shorter arms are a disadvantage when blocking on the edge.

Speed isn't the top priority for a "Y" tight end, but Rob Gronkowski has shown that huge guys that can run fast are tough to stop. Neither of these three have speed that approaches Gronkowski-territory.

Only Fiedorowicz was able to run the 40-yard dash at the combine—Niklas and Seferian-Jenkins were both nursing injuries—and clocked a solid 4.76 mark. Niklas will likely run in the same range at his pro timing day, while Seferian-Jenkins has a chance to break the 4.7 barrier.

Fiedorowicz impressed with a 7.10 three-cone drill—top among tight ends at the combine—while Niklas' 7.57 time might have been due to his injury. Seferian-Jenkins didn't participate in any running events in Indianapolis.

If tight ends can't block effectively, the offense loses the ability to use "12" personnel as both an effective running and passing personnel grouping. That duality causes defenses all kinds of problems, especially when the Patriots go no-huddle.

Fiedorowicz sets himself apart in his pass-blocking. Where Fiedorowicz—coached up by former Belichick coaches Kirk and Brian Ferentz at Iowa—remains solid moving backwards, Niklas can get sloppy in his pass sets. On occasion, he will get put on skates when edge-rushers try power moves.

As important as blocking is, tight ends in the New England Patriots' offense have to be able to get open and catch the football.

C.J. Fiedorowicz isn't as dynamic as Niklas—that may be in part to the conservative Iowa offense—but what he does, he does well. He runs curls and outs as good as any tight end in the NFL and is extremely effective at getting open in the red zone. He could have notched a few more touchdowns his senior season if the Iowa quarterback hadn't chosen to run touchdowns in himself.

If the Patriots want a polished player that can fit in as a rookie without any hiccups, Fiedorowicz should be the pick.

A better comp for Fiedorowicz is Heath Miller of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was their first round selection in 2005. 6050 256 both sound route running wall off pass receivers who stay in-line blocking schemes. Like all positions they just evolve with time. I've watched plenty of game tape & he backed it up with solid workout/combine showing better than expected athletic ability.

looks a whole lot like heath miller

I think he is a bit more like Heath Miller from the Steelers.

If I were to compare him to an NFL player you might be more familiar with how about Pittsburgh Steeler Heath Miller, selected in the 1st rd. 30th overall in 2005. Two time Pro-Bowler, 40TD's & 5,279 yards while being primarily Big Ben's pass blocker.

i actually think he'll be better than miller, but it wouldnt surprise me if he was similarly under appreciated - and similarly a pivotal piece of the offense.

I like our TE group.

Zach Potter 6'7" 265
Fiedorowicz 6'6" 262
Griffin 6'6" 254
Phillip Supernaw 6'5" 248
Garrett Graham 6'3" 243
Brad Smiley 6'2" 235

Thinking of Fiedo and Prosch blocking in the run game is gonna be exciting! We get to be the bully! So long finesse offense... hello smash mouth!

What's that wanna be-hasn't really ever been Jamie Pukes, eerrrr, Dukes gonna rag about now?

Oh yeah, the QB situation and he's already started on that. That cat gives me a rash. BIG TIME!

At times I wish I would have been gifted enough and big enough to have taken even one NFL snap because I'd be much better at his job than he is. :kitten:
