2014 NFL Draft Thread

I think so as well. They'll probably still take one of Garo/Mett/Murray and develop him for a year before they make that final decision,a nd you never know. Maybe that guy develops. But I think they are looking at this as a two year rebuild.

Yeah. I think we all knew otherwise when Bob McNair insisted this wasn't a rebuild, just a retooling.

I think they are looking at either Garoppolo or McCarren tomorrow in the 2nd round, And for the record, I think either one of them will have a better NFL career than either Manziel or Bridgewater.

It's your opinion, and I respect that. I disagree though. You may be right with Manziel, because I can only see him either booming or busting, nothing in between. But I think Bridgewater will have the best career out of any of these quarterbacks. I don't know much about Garoppolo but I just don't see it in AJ McCarron.

Exactly. I'm not a fan of Teddy to be honest with you, but I mean hell, the Vikings are a team with arguably more holes than the Texans and have a new coach as well. They aren't drafting scared and sitting pat. What angers me is the sheer fact that the Texans seemingly aren't trying here. The Vikings and Browns are making the effort to win now despite being a worse team. It's frustrating.

I'd be happy with Teddy at 1.28 ish because at least that shows me the Texans are not scared. They are.

The Texans were 2-14

What was the Vikings/Browns record?

Texans have holes all over the field I want them to pick the BPA each round.

This. I think most of the angst around here stems from two things: 1.) A misplaced sense that the Texans HAVE to take a QB, regardless what their board says, and 2.) a deep lack of trust in Rick Smith's overall draft record.

You have a team with no QB, a washed up hippie at RB, and a geriatric Andre Johnson, in an NFL were defense is becoming increasingly irrelevant. Baring a few freakish picks like Wilson, you aren't finding a good QB in round 2 or 3.

So you're suggesting that we draft a guy in the 1st round that SHOULD have been picked in round 2 or round 3 like THAT's going to make a difference? You're going to draft the next Christian Ponder or Vince Young or Jake Locker and hope they're going to turn into Peyton Manning?

I'm really hoping we take a DT like Louis Nix or Ra'shede Hageman tomorrow night... I think it'd be HUGE for our defense. QB can wait a round.

Says the guy who thought Kubiak was a SB winning HC.

No. I said that Kubiak is a good enough coach to win a Superbowl. I never argued that he was a great NFL head coach nor did I think he had already won one... which is what your misrepresentation implies.

I'm not arguing that Clowney was a bad pick... only that I did not like the pick and do not understand how the pieces fit... That being said, I am hopeful and very interested to see how they orchestrate the front 7... It is certainly exciting to envision so much talent lined up along the front 7 next season. I'm just worried that Watt will lose effectiveness by being asked to occupy blockers...

And, I am worried about Clowney's motor. In the presser, Rick Smith alluded to it, saying - "did he play like his hair was on fire every play?... No, he didn't". I am concerned about that. Though, it is somewhat reassuring that the Texans: recognize his inconsistent motor, acknowledge it, and clearly believe they can coach/motivate him through it. We will see.

Jimmy Garoppolo. That is all.

I've mentioned this before, but my gut tells me that this is the guy that Bill O'Brien wants.

I'm calling it, right here, right now. Nix is good player, and would fill a need. But I don't see them taking two defensive players in the top two rounds. And I certainly don't see Garoppolo falling to 3.

But I think Bridgewater will have the best career out of any of these quarterbacks.

I am no GM obviously, and I didn't even stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I never thought TB was worth a 1st round pick, even in a year where there was no clear-cut top QB. For whatever reason, 31 teams agreed with me. I wouldn't be surprised if this year's draft ends up being like the 2002 draft, where tons of QBs were taken and none of them succeeded.

Aaron Murray is my sleeper pick, FWIW. *shrug*

Could be. But my personal opinion of Bridgewater was and is high. And maybe the fact that he was taken one spot away from us via trade makes it worse for me. IDK.

FWIW I like Murray too. Saw plenty of him while watching SEC football. Think we could get him in the 4th?
Just don't think he's the same kind of prospect as Manziel/Bridgewater/Bortles.

Not a draft to trade up in minus the front 4-6. You gain picks in this one because of the depth. Im content losing out on bridgewater and I think probably a lot of us thought Seattle would trade back so someone could leap frog us for the qb. Im in the nix/tuitt camp for the next pick...maybe jimmy G but I want no part of carr.

I would suggest trading up into the first to grab Manziel or Bridgewater, just like the other two teams that needed a QB did.

I think he's pretty close to the same kind of prospect as TB, actually. What are TB's strengths? Pocket presence, defense reading, poise, etc. Aaron Murray has all that, with the added bonus of playing his best games against the toughest competition. What are both of their weaknesses? Size, strength, etc. I think they're both accurate enough, which is to say I don't buy into TB's pro day. But they both need development. If you have the luxury (or discipline) to take a guy like that a little bit later and sit him to develop, you might end up with a really good QB. Or maybe he washes out, but you didn't waste much on him. I'd rather they waste a few years on a guy like Aaron Murray than a guy like Sam Montgomery.

I think because of Murray's knee injury, he could fall to 4.1, which is about where I'd hope to take a development guy like that. Think Kirk Cousins, in terms of risk.

This

Trade for Mallett and if it doesn't work out pick a QB in 2015. Or if Garappolo/McCarron Savage fall to 3-1 then pick one of them. I expect a trade back tomorrow.

If he's at 4.1 Rick Smith better be running to the podium.

Yep and Murray is a great pick.

Agree.

With some space and time between tonight's crap to clear my head...

This is a long term re-build, no matter what Uncle McNair says. Go hard on the defense. Draft Nix, and then draft Skov or Bullough or another good ILB and let's build a fearsome front 7.

Agree. I would rather have Preston Brown or even Smallwood than Skov or Bullough. Either way lets make defense a strength. We have to at least find a good nickel back. Our secondary scares me.

Who stayed? Who is coming back tomorrow? I have been looking online but I cant find anything.

Overreaction on my part. I lost it when Bridgewater got snagged by the Vikes since he was my QB of choice.

I've been there. The trade down away from Derrick Johnson to get that fat lump of crap Travis Johnson did it to me. Ruined my who offseason. It sucks but it happens. Hopefully whatever happens here turns out better than that did.

The Texans sucked because they had no QB. They still have no QB. Now we are waiting for a GM that can't draft in the 2nd or 3rd rounds to pull a miracle out of his ass.

Now we are stuck hoping Tom Brady's waterboy knows what he's doing, instead of being another Belichick washout.

Clowney's upside pretty much made him mandatory at the top of the draft, no problem with that. The team is still bereft of offensive weapons in a passing NFL. Carr won't get picked, Mettenberger literally pissed away his chance, and AJ McCarron is a game manager.

Diluted sample doesn't equal pissing away his chance. In fact for a team that thinks Brian Cushing overtrained and got pregnant I think it's a non-factor. Carr won't get picked but Garopp..Gara... **** it! I'm calling him "Polo" from here on out! Who's with me? I'd rather have Polo than Bridgewater and McCarron as a game manager doesn't phase me. Is he a good game manager? That's the real questions.

Foster isn't a washed up hippie, AJ isn't a geriatric and he's paired with a 2nd year Hopkins who should take big steps further alleviating the coverage AJ gets, and NFL defenses still win championships.

You're babbling now man. Get a grip on yourself.

I've wanted Garrapalo for a long time, but the more I hear of Savage, he would be a 3rd round choice I could get behind to develop over the necxt year.

The draft has gone well for us, imo. I wanted a trade back out of 1, but Clowney was my guy if we didn't. We didn't waste picks by trading back into the 1st either, which is a plus.

I think there are still too many good players on the board to grab a QB at 33. Nix, Tuitt, Ealy, etc. I'd trade back or grab the BPA, which I don't think would be a QB.

LOL. You ever wonder why all these guys spend all this time studying up for draft day, making up spreadsheets and mock drafts and sh!t.....

.....and every year, every single year, they find out the more they thought they learned about it, the less they actually know about it?

Anyways, I'm still calling it. Bill O'Brien likes Jimmy Garappolo, and that's who I think they're picking at 2.1.

And I think some of you are vastly underestimating the number the QBs that will get grabbed up in the 2nd.

Wait until the 3rd, you might well not even take one, and just stick with what we already have.

And that wouldn't upset me at all. I like Garappolo too. I just think there might still be several better players available. But again, if we think now's the time to snatch up a QB..then I'm totally on board.

Agreed. The "top 3" QBs in this draft were a joke. Not because they can't play, but because there really isn't a difference between them & some of the guys still on the board.

IF we don't take a QB in the next 32 picks, or we don't trade for Mallet, then I can understand some of this, "Texans don't want to win, didn't address our most pressing need." talk. I still wouldn't agree with it, but I could understand it.

I would not have a problem with that. Not one bit. In fact I can get behind that. There are about 6-8 guys out there right now who I'd be perfectly content with at 2-1. If we stay there I hope we get one of them.

This has been a fun draft so far for me.

Careful they can be a wee bit sensitive when told this.

Even if everything you're saying is true (it isn't), that doesn't mean that the three QBs we passed on represented our ultimate salvation. They don't/didn't. They are 2nd-round talents taken in the first round of an off year for QB talent. If this were next year's draft and we took one of these 3 scrubs from 2014 instead of the true 2015 first round talents, your panties would be in the exact same bunch.

Trade for Mallett and if it doesn't work out pick a QB in 2015.
Right. Just trade for Mallett. He has more talent than any of the remaining QBs. Give him a year and if he doesn't work out, go back to the fishin' hole.

Maybe so. I'm OK with Garo ... fk it ... Polo at 2.1. I like Murray, but never watched Polo, so it's not like I'm comparing them. I said before Murray's knee injury and before the draft process played out that I would like Murray in the 3rd. If they get him in the 3rd, I'm happy. If they get him in the 4th, I'm ecstatic. If they take Polo in the 2nd, it's fine too. *shrug*

The 2nd round is about leading the trends instead of reacting to them. We'll see how Rick Smith manages things when there's a run on QBs or DTs or whatever.

See, I'd be okay with this. It's just the whole rumor that he wants to agree to an extension first that causes me a lot of issues.

Does Mallett have a no trade clause? lol

Him wanting to agree to an extension before being traded somewhere is funny.

I'd be coo with this too. It'd allow us to keep stocking up in the trenches. But, like Ryan mentioned, it'd depend on what kind of contract we gave him. The cat's 1-4 for 17 yards and a pick in his career, so what can he demand?

Where is the rumor Mallett is pushing the extension? An extension is something the team trading to get the player generally insists on (like we did with Schaub) so that the pick they are giving up in the trade isn't for a 1 year rental.

The trade is a great smoke screen for a QB in the 3rd and trade down in the 2nd .
