2014 Texans Talk Mock Draft SELECTION

So I have an OLB, a CB, and a FS in mind for the Jets pick. Won't name names because it might dilute the process.

What position should the Jets draft?

The Miami Dolphins select:

Allen Robinson - WR - Penn State - Big 10

I was very torn about where to go. Miami needs a running back big time but I think there's value down the stretch. I didn't see anything else that fit particularly well so I decided to give Ryan Tannehill yet another toy to play with. I don't think a duo of Wallace/Hartline is all that great. Using Wallace and Robinson as wideouts with Hartline in the slot should upgrade Miami's okay WR corps and give that Miami offense another boost, especially since Ryan Tannehill should have plenty of time in the pocket to throw.

Jimmy Ward - Strong Safety - Northern Illinois - MAC

The Cardinals have a solid defense.

Having already added Van Noy in the vacant OLB spot and now Ward at the back end they are even stronger.

Ward was BPA left on my board and matched a need so BOOM!

Why would you think Hartline can/would play the slot?

CB probably would be my pick. They need 2 of them really, a future #1 to replace Cromartie.

I think he can play the slot, but honestly I think they will cut him next year. Cutting him saves over $7M on the cap next year and they would not incur any dead money.

I think that Robinson pick is spot on as a future #2 who adds something different than a Wallace or a Hartline.

I'm late to the party.

Roberson was 2nd on my list.

1st on my list was Crichton. He is a relentless pass rusher with a great 1st step and a great work ethic. The Bears could use more players with Crichton's intensity. Houston/Crichton = huge upgraded DE position.

Chisled like his bloodline, Jerry Rice, productive, timed better than most expected for his size @ Combine ran a 4.46 & lifted 21 reps (one less than Clowney) also 35 1/2 VJ, 10' BJ 201 receptions last two years. Solid football player, Pro- Ready. Phildephia already disucssing trading DeSean Jackson, probably for a 2nd/3rd so along with adding Sproles Chip Kelly offense doesn't skip a beat.

Nice pick, I like him a lot. I like what the Eagles are doing too by trying to trade DeSean. They see value here in draft and feel Jackson is overpaid.

I don't know that he would, but he can. He's got quite a bit of speed and agility (not the stereotypical "white receiver" mold, really) but he's not a huge competitor for the ball, nor is he a touchdown machine or a redzone threat. Either way it's mostly a move with future consideration in mind. I don't believe Hartline is a long term fixture on the team (I'm not a big fan of Mike Wallace either, but that's another story) and he'll be gone sooner or later. Drafting a true slot receiver comes later, though, perhaps next year. There are many concerns the Dolphins have on the other side of the ball and one draft isn't enough to fix both offense and defense.

Struggled between him and Robinson. They were basically neck in neck for me. Matthews is faster and separates better but Robinson has the edge in YAC.

Untrue. They would incur $4.2 MM dead money. He was JUST signed to a 5/30 MM deal. That's not slot WR money, he's not playing slot and he is not being cut next year.

There is a modern day obsession with slot WRs due to the emergence of some really great WRs like Welker, Cruz, and a few others, but many offenses don't really support a slot WR. Bill Lazor is the new OC in Miami, coming from Philly and Chip Kelly. Their offense featured a "slot" WR in Jason Avant having ~800 offensive snaps (more than Victor Cruz). Avant ended the year with like 40/450.

The obsession with slot WRs has just gone out of control. People were obsessing with the possibilities of Keshawn Martin preseason and I told them all that Garrett Graham would be the true beneficiary of the slot WR role and they damn near laughed me out of the thread because they had this vision of Wes Welker in their heads...

WR is a position in this draft where you can really add some value, can't go wrong with either one I don't think, kinda hope Robinson drops to Texans 3rd rd. but probably won't happen. Matthews I had late 1st early 2nd rd. grade! He reminds me a lot of a faster version of Marques Cholston, big possession WR.

I definitely agree. Matthews I feel is largely underrated, but that might just be because of the amount of talent and value @ WR this draft.

Reuniting Robinson with BoB and Stan Hixon here would be sweet, but I don't think we'll be getting any higher round WRs this year, unless O'Brien's just not a fan of our WR corps.

Ours does. And the reason we have visions of Wes Welker is because this is the offense that Welker made his name in.
 
Hey if anyone is in need of a slot receiver, Andrew Hawkins is on the trading block! He's real nice, and he does flips sometimes to get your team on the ESPN Top 10 list! Anyone want him?

I was talking about Miami. And we will see. I didn't exactly see any "slot" WRs setting the world on fire in Penn State. Let's not give BOB too much credit for Tom Brady and New England's success. Josh McD brought in Welker and helped him to his first two 100/1000 yard seasons.

Correct me if I'm wrong (not a capologist), but he was paid a 7 million signing bonus. He's guaranteed 12.5 million, so that leaves 5.5 million. Calculate in his salary from this year and the salary he'll be paid next year, and doesn't that finish off his guaranteed money? Could the Dolphins not cut him after next season without incurring dead money?

Browns are stuck with him. Once they inked them I totally my buddy from Cleveland the Bengals weren't matching and the Browns just threw that money away.

Probably not this yr and certainly not with Martin. But I bet this changes very quickly in BOB's Pats style offense. I think the perfect slot WR may already be on the roster. (Cruse)

And that's certainly your right and I respect your opinion. I will also just say I worry Cruse will never amount to anything on this team and will be cut soon. If he can't make a mark on STs his days in this league and especially the Texans are numbered.

Yeah, $7.3 MM year contract cap hit, but if they cut it's a $4.2 MM dead money hit. Therefore a $3 MM savings. Good luck finding a WR as capable as Hartline for $3 MM unless you are blowing a 2nd round pick when you got bigger holes elsewhere.

Just an added FYI, the way that signing bonus' work is they are spread through the life of the contract. For ex. 4 year deal with an $8 MM signing bonus means 8/4= $2 MM per year in that signing bonus is spread throughout in each year of the contract. Therefore after year 1, you cut the person you incur a $6 MM cap hit in dead money unless you get fancy w/ June 1st cuts, etc.
