Jon Gruden gives Johnny Manziel high marks

After taping an episode of his TV show with first-round draft prospect Johnny Manziel, Super Bowl champion coach Jon Gruden compared him to former San Francisco 49ers star quarterback Steve Young, and is sold not only on Manziel's ability to succeed in the NFL, but in his maturity as well.

"I don't think anything is going to be pure in the pocket. He has his own style of playing quarterback. He reminds me a lot of Steve Young when Steve Young came out of Brigham Young," Gruden said,"My dad drafted him out of the USFL. He was a wild horse back there, but when he did scramble, it was really exciting. Manziel has a lot of similar qualities, but he can adjust and become a pocket passer."

The more hate this kids gets, the more it fuels his fire. I can't say for sure if he will succeed in the NFL, but I know for sure he won't go down without one hell of a fight.
 
I think its pretty clear Manziel will be a Texan this year. I have personal doubts on whether its the right thing or not, but I'm almost certain its happening. Of course I also believed Beyonce would marry me too one day and that hasn't happened so who knows.

I personally believe this is a 2 horse race between TB and BB. Someone from the AAC will be playing for the Texans next year, I just don't know who.

With all Houston Sports teams (with regards to trades and draft picks), they always seem to focus the flood light in one direction drawing all attention over there while there is secret back door deals going on at the other side of the parking lot.

Mario Williams, Merciless, JJ Watt, James Harden, etc.

They keep things close to the vest in this city and love to keep everyone guessing. Too many flood lights have been on JFF and Clowney so now I don't believe there is a chance.

...Dungy, the former head coach of the Buccaneers and Colts, says Manziel is not the type of quarterback who will fit into a traditional pro-style offense.

"My two concerns would be, No. 1, if you take him, you've got to build your offense around what he can do," Dungy told The Musers on KTCK AM radio. "Very much what you'd have to do with Tim Tebow. You've gotta make a commitment and say, 'We're going to build around him.' That's not hard to do. You can do that.

"The second concern I'd have is, can he stay healthy?" he said. "We saw it with Robert Griffin -- spectacular athlete, special player. But when you build it on that mobility, you always have the concern: Can he hold up and stay healthy around these big players?"

"He is productive, he's a winner," Dungy said. "He's a guy that excites his teammates. He gets the most out of everybody around him. That's what you're looking for in a quarterback. Is Tim Tebow really a good example for this? How about someone unconventional but successful?

Been saying this since the zone read made it to the NFL. Mobility for a QB is a nice thing to have, but when it's your primary skill you are doomed. You will either be forced to adapt or you will be run out of the league by injuries.

I still laugh at these people who think there is going to be some drastic change in how the QB position is played. Are there better athletes at the QB position now than there ever have been? Yes. Does the same also hold true for every other position? Yes. You still have to be able to win with your arm to be successful.
 
Parts of this may have been posted somewhere else, but the summarization of Braddock's valid observations has got to give one pause.

The fact Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel dared the Houston Texans not to take him with the No. 1 overall pick probably won’t work in the quarterback’s favor. In an interview two weeks ago, Manziel claimed if the Texans pass on him with the No. 1 overall pick, “It would be the worst decision they’ve ever made.”

Despite the professional manner of Manziel’s approach to the combine, the previous comment might not sit well with Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien.
“…if Manziel really wants to be the No. 1 overall pick, you know what he needs? Someone who’ll tell him that the more you dare/challenge/finger-wag at a guy like O’Brien - which in my view is what Manziel’s sales pitch has done - the more likely O’Brien will ask where the (bleep) you get off challenging him when you haven’t peed a drop in the NFL. And the more likely O’Brien will view you as a salesman/brand advancer who covets the trappings that accompany being the No. 1 overall pick as much as you want to play football for the team that happens to hold that selection.

”Manziel could have taken a step in the right direction by throwing at the NFL combine. He could have come out, competed and showed, without question, he was the top quarterback. He ran an impressive 4.56-second 40-yard dash, but he didn’t throw.

So what are the pros about Johnny Manziel. Fellow NFL Scout Jayson Braddock had this to say about Manziel’s upside. “I know everyone loves this kid’s game and going into the film I thought I would too. Fact of the matter is that there isn’t much about his game that excites me at the NFL level. Johnny is exceptional at evading the pass rush and running with the ball. He can also avoid pass rushers and keep plays alive long enough to get the ball into one of his playmaker’s hands. I don’t like the Russell Wilson comparisons. He’s more on par with Mike Vick, when Vick was coming out of Virginia Tech. He has a weaker arm than Vick did then, but better accuracy.”

Now when Jayson spoke on his cons, he had a lot more to say. “What would Johnny be without an offensive line? He routinely had 5-6 seconds on every drop. This has thrown off his internal clock and on top of all the other developing he’ll have to do at the NFL level, he’ll have to understand that the ball has to be gone.

“He has also been spoiled with this protection. It’s allowed him to click through his progressions and not be forced at developing a smooth rhythm of getting through his reads. In the 4th quarter of the Duke game was the first time I saw Manziel flow through his progressions.

The comfort he had at Texas A&M in the pocket also developed wasted moments that will have to be taken out. He bunny hops before the throw. He has to do the bunny hop, like a free throw shooter with their ritual. It’ll take a ton of in-game snaps to keep his rhythm while taking away his ritual.”

Manziel has a horrific tendency of staring down his throws. He won’t get away with this at the next level. Johnny shows passes with lob or touch few and far between. His arm strength is adequate at best and instead of having a natural motion he uses all arm to “fling” the ball and try to fit it in a window.

His mechanics will need drastic improvement like what we saw out of Cam Newton after college. The concern is that I still see Cam revert back to what he’s done for most of his life and forget the training over the last few seasons. How will Manziel adapt to a makeover of all his mechanics?

Manziel really struggles with his accuracy on throws outside the numbers to the field side.

While he’s an exciting college player to watch, I’d wouldn’t put the next few years of my franchise’s success on his young shoulders.

The 3rd round is where I’d be comfortable in using a pick and developing him. However, someone will fall in love with him just like they did with Vick and probably use a high round pick on him.

He indeed had tremendous OL protection. And it was amazing how he generated such great excitement for his play running around in circles for what seemed like minutes............just to complete so many of those 5-8 yard passes that a pocket passer with that same OL protection would have hit in a matter of a few seconds.

These QB "grades" this year are puzzling. Like someone really wants a QB at the top of this draft.

Yep, and this is why I believe more each day that Teddy Bridgewater will be our pick at 1.1 when its all said an done.

I mean the guy has been in the conversation for first overall QB in the 2014 for over a year...and there is a reason why.

Manziel didn't catapult into the first overall discussion until that crazy comeback win against Duke. That single game really started a big upward trend for his draft stock. If you look back into early December mock drafts, most projected him as a late first, early second round pick.

Same for Bortles. Throughout the season you never heard his name mentioned as a candidate for a high first round pick. And then his team beats Baylor in the BCS bowl game and he instantly becomes a favorite for our first overall pick. I mean really, does that make any sense? Bortles didn't even throw the ball that well against Baylor, and did most of his damage on the ground via the read option.

Every time I see a piece that seems to attempt to persuade me in one players direction, I really just start thinking the opposite.
 
I don't think manziel fits the bob mold. Ob has pushed team first. I think he'd rather have a qb that will fit into the team concept on and off the field. I think it's either TB at 1, which is what I very much think will happen or a trade down and take bortles. I don't think manziel is an option honestly. The way he plays and the big persons he carries just doesn't seem to mesh with what I think BO wants.

Jmo. I just wish the draft would come so we can just get it done and move forward with whoever we choose.

Wilson was a slightly better athlete. Had a stronger arm. Played in two different pro style systems while Manziel has only played in Sumlin's high school offense. Wilson was named team captain at Wisconsin by his teammates after only having been there for two weeks. Manziel has maturity concerns (he's also younger than Wilson was). Wilson used his arm as a primary weapon and his legs when he had to. Manziel uses his legs as his primary weapon and his arm as a secondary one. Wilson was a one man team for three years before he got to Wisconsin. Manziel has been surrounded by as much NFL talent as any QB in the country.

Manziel had a great college career and fantastic stats. Won a Heisman. We all know his story.

Wilson had 17 TDs to 1 INT as a RS FR. As a RS SO he had a 379 pass streak without throwing an INT. Led the conference in passing and total offense again as a RS JR. Transferred to Wisconsin and broke the collegiate record for passing efficiency in a pro style offense that he only had weeks to learn before the season started. Led his team to a conference title and had a ratio of 33 TDs to 4 INTs.

I understand that you resist change, but that offense was no High School offense. Better get used to it because it's the future of the NFL.

Simply put, everything Manziel is good at, Wilson is as good at or better. Wilson was just as fast & quick, tremendously bigger hands than manziel... stronger arm than Manziel...he was a better pocket passer in college than Manziel & put up tremendous stats in a top notch conference...like Manziel.

I don't resist change. I'm very open to change. But change just for the sake of something different is ridiculous. If you can't win with your arm you can't be a successful QB in the NFL, regardless of how exciting you are as a runner.

And yes, it is a high school offense. It is an extremely simplistic offense that takes all the pressure off of the players and puts all the on field decisions on the coaches. It won't fly in the NFL because coaches don't want to babysit their players. The players should be advanced enough to be trusted to make their own reads and decisions. Even if someone did try it NFL defenses would eat this scheme alive the same way that LSU did (ironically the college defense that that is most similar to the NFL model, and the one that shut JFF down twice).

Is it the future of the NFL like the zone read was for one year? Or like the wildcat was for one year?...

I debate this with people all the time, and I debate on your side of the argument. I always tell people this stuff is cyclical, it comes around and leaves, but QBs that can throw don't. That's why I love guys that work hard to get the ball to playmakers first before they take off on their own first.

This is not fair. Just because you think a person should sit quietly in a room until draft day doesn't mean that he should.

Because of his name he has the power to change people's lives simply by showing up some place and taking pictures. Just like LBJ was unfairly scrutinized JFF is having the same done.

I see absolutely NOTHING wrong with showing up and taking pictures for charity. I see something wrong with punching your fiancee in the face and dragging her body out of the Casino elevator. I guess that's just me.

I'd be interested in that, assuming we got Dallas' pick at #16. Romo currently has the majority of his contract tied up in signing bonus, which means he would only cost:

2014 $1,000,000
2015 $17,000,000
2016 $8,500,000
2017 $14,000,000
2018 $19,500,000
2019 $20,500,000

Only his 2014 salary would be guaranteed. 7.5m of his 2015 salary would be guaranteed if he's on the roster in 2015.

However, Dallas would incur about 40 million in cap acceleration from his signing bonuses, so it has no chance of happening.

Nope. What most people don't understand is for logical and rational Aggies like myself and Htown, seeing this smear campaign and assassination on Manziel's character is absolutely sickening.

Being on the front lines of one of the biggest media harassment's of a college athlete is something that people outside of Aggieland will just never get. If you were sitting in our shoes and saw what we saw up close and personal, you would have a totally different view.

And please don't confuse the above with some irrational agenda for Manziel to become a Texan just because he also played for my alma mater. That is not it at all. I do not personally feel Manziel is the right choice for us at 1.1 nor do I think he is the best QB in this draft...

What I do feel strongly about is how all these sheeple have succumb to the E!SPN hype once again and now view Manziel as some lazy, drunkard, self absorbed, prima donna who never gave two **** about anything but himself. Which is 100% incorrect.

It hurts to see a kid who did so much for your school get berated and belittled by a bunch of worthless morons with a macbook and a blog.

Very few people want to talk about his merit as an actual football player. Instead everyone wants diss him for things like simply going to a charity even and putting on a shirt with his name on the back.

Sorry, but seeing this just pisses me off so much because how the media has pigeoned holed Manziel is just a sad microcosm of how our society today allows their televisions and phones dictate their perception of a person character...A person they have never once met in their entire life.
