Two key qualities you look for in a leader is maturity and good decision making. Manziel demonstrated neither with this interview.
Is this the, "Let's tear down the other guy" strategy of making our guy look good?
He did nothing of the sort, but if it makes you feel better, you stick with your interpretation.

I don't quite follow. Who are you referring to as our guy?
Looks like I touched a nerve.
Manziel had nothing to gain by daring the Texans, and took an unnecessary risk towards turning them off. That indicates poor decision making to the evaluators. Is Bill O'Brien, the guy known for chewing out Tom Brady, going to be impressed by a rhyming Frito idiom from a 21 year old kid? What about Rick Smith, who expressed disinterest in "bringing the circus to town" when Favre was available? What inroads did Dunte Robinson make by daring Rick Smith? Sure, different situations, but Manziel doesn't know that. It comes back to decision making.
The Texans are currently a team of veterans in need of a new on-field leader, and a 21 year old candidate needs to demonstrate he has the maturity to command their respect. At this phase of the evaluation, if he indicates uncertainty in that quality, there are two other QB candidates who will step up to prove it.
I cant believe people knocked Manziel for that quote. I absolutely loved that quote from Johnny. Some people just see the world quite differently from other people. Maybe its because Manziel doesnt fit the profile of a brash, arrogant, but very talented athlete.
What Manziel said was absolutely nothing and harmless. Nothing we havent heard before from the likes of Ali, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Charles Barkley, Cristiano Ronaldo, and other cocky athletes.
Randy Moss made similar comments when he got passed up. So did golden boy aaron rodgers who made comments about the 49ers are going to regret not drafting him. That was a tv interview that was on youtube but the video is no longer there.

One of the funniest moments of all time. I can't remember one person being outraged or calling him a cocky punk after that though. Of course that was a long time ago so my memory could be faulty.

It didn't rise to outrage but he was criticized.
Something else being missed in these examples is they mainly came after being successful or at least after the draft not before. Like I said before, doubt it affects anything but it wasn't smart. It was also very odd right when he was trying to be "more mature than the whole Johnny Football thing."
I don't like the longhorns and I like manziel as a player. I'm just concerned about his dedication to his profession just as I am about clowney.
If by "we" you mean yourself, with everyone else laughing...then yes, I remember.Remember the most important criteria for quarterback greatness we talked about?
Does he have a great name?
Is he good looking enough?
I've got more Johnny Manziel-related stories in Chron and on Chron.com Mon, Tues, Wed and Thursday. And Sat from combine.
I got to hang with Johnny Manziel this week.![]()
is anybody else in a dilemma? i want the texans to draft manziel a lot but i also want them to draft clowney, we can't miss with the jaguars picking 3rd... its like if we take manziel i can see clowney taking him out and if we take clowney i can see manziel tearing us up every year
The Peyton situation came before the draft, but I will concede they had much different reputations heading into the draft process.
Peyton told them behind closed doors, not to the media. The fact this brat can't stay out of the headlines is enough to not want him.

Yeh I would rather have another dull boring no leading lifeless QB than one who is super competitive and plays with a chip on his shoulder.
Did anyone else read the story in the Sunday Chronicle?
Andre Johnson is awesome, Manziel said. I got to know Andre a little by going to Rockets games last year, him and Arian (Foster).
I remember the first time I met them. A friends uncle had courtside tickets. I remember sitting on the first row, my feet on the court. I remember peering over and looking behind me and Andre and Arian were sitting behind me. I was like, This doesnt seem right. Theres something twisted with this.
Arian just got a new deal (contract). Andres a legend. Somethings not right about this. We ended up going in the Lexus Lounge, and I got a chance to talk to (them). Me and Arian both playing in the SEC, like I remember sharing stories with him.
Andre is a guy I still talk to. We do have a little bit of a relationship. What a great athlete. Hes so incredibly impressive.
Manziel is hoping to have an opportunity to play with Cushing and Watt, too.
(Cushing) is a guy Ive talked to recently and has shown a lot of interest in me going to Houston, he said. Hes so talented and fearless. Hes another guy Id love to have on my defense.
Now, out of everybody in the NFL Id want to go into the trenches with, J.J. Watts the guy. I know hes not going to get pummeled, and I know hes not going to stop fighting until theres nothing left in him. Thats my kind of guy.

His name dropping skills are quite impressive. But even more impressive is his ability to improvise and extend the name dropping to four more paragraphs. Scouts notice that.

Nah, it wasn't this one, though I haven't seen this one at all. It was about him training in San Diego with his QB coach, the one who worked with Roethlisberger and Luck, and rehashed some of his quotes that have been discussed lately. It was a John McClain write up. Front page of the Sports section from this morning.
The link that I posted has video of his training on the San Diego beach with trainer George Whitfield. The training itself and the explanations by Whitfield are rather interesting.

Yes.
McClain was fawning all over JFF like a little schoolgirl. Objectivity at its lowest.

Unwise due to potentially inferred immaturity? The Texans brass will avoid him to show "who's boss"?Sure is easy to knock down imaginary enemies.
I think the training portion was a positive and the daring portion was unwise but will be insignificant.
Incredible insight and analysis there. In case you haven't noticed, the #1 pick always brings a circus to town. We've seen two up close here in recent years. Perhaps you've forgotten?Looks like I touched a nerve.

Then there's these snarky responses that makes it appear that anyone who even entertains that Manziel can actually play pretty good football and isn't all mouth is overlooking reality.Yup, you're right. Anyone who even entertains the idea of a discussion of anything related to Manziel having even the remotest pittance of a chance of being considered less than perfection is clearly a hater.
Fully agree with this. It's a puff piece at it's finest. The only question is: Will there be more of these for the top "contenders", or is this isolated to Manziel?http://www.houstonchronicle.com/spo...php?t=c80d489e2acba496f0&t=c80d489e2acc308649

All this tit for tat discussion about Manziel is why I have tried to stay out of the Case Keenum discussions. As a UH alumni, anything I say positive about Keenum is discounted because I'm a homer.
A&M people can't defend Manziel because they will also be labeled homers by a jury of their message board peers. And if any negative comments are made about Manziel, those people are labeled as haters.
There is no middle ground in these discussions.
He's alternately boasting about how terrific he is, then threatening the Texans brass if they pass on him with their top pick in the Draft. Hey, the kid has got a mouth that overloads his skinny little azz and he's sounding more and more like a jerk, which no coach wants on his team. He should just show up at the Combine and work out, then do the same at his Pro day, and keep his mouth shut unless he's asked a question by a prospective NFL employer.
Many have said things like this before JFF and many will say these things after. I find that when the others did it (if they were liked by media), it was because they were 'competitors', but if JFF does it, it's because he's a pompous jerk. Interesting...

I had the misfortune of living in that city for a couple of years and I learned this make believe rivalry between the cities is completely one sided. People in Dallas don't even know about it or talk about it.
I prefer guys like AJ who keep their opinions mostly to themselves and just show it with their actions. I know that's a hard concept to understand in the 21st century. If someone is the strong-silent type they are automatically presumed weak until proven otherwise, just because they don't run their mouth.

Sometimes it works, kinda Cam & Vick. Most of the times, it don't... Vince, Cam, Tebow

You worry about a frito quote and manage to whiff on all the training. Explain to me again how O'Brien will be turned off by a guy that brought in a New England guy to teach him "his" offense.
The haters see nothing but macho bravado. Everyone else sees a kid doing his damndest to get drafted by a team in his own state.
I just got a phone call from Manziel's mom. She says for you to stop being such a mother hen.
Go back to the main idea of my post: "Manziel had nothing to gain by daring the Texans..." If you've ever been in competition with your peers for a promotion, you'd know that you're living under a microscope. There's as much a skill to knowing when to not say anything as there is to saying the right things. Criticizing Manziel on that isn't "being a hater," it's just good advice.
A lot of Manziel's moves are pretty calculated at this point like most draft prospects. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if he was advised to say what he did.
Calculated? This guy is best known for running the Benny Hill Offense in college! He improvises everything, including that interview.
Wow, surprised to see your full on membership in the Manziel Defense League came through. But congratulations you managed to jump right into the defense of any comment no matter how small being directed his way if not 100% rosily endorsing everything he does and even if preceded by a positive.
Maybe you should save this rebuttal for when whether he actually plays pretty good football was part of the discussion.
But thank you for proving the snark was well earned.
...unwise but insignificant. ---- [IMGwidthsize=100]http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/super-hero-emoticon-17346260.jpg[/IMG] to the rescue.
While I agree with what you said. This part right here I believe is incorrect. You probably asked people that don't watch or care about sports (or children) cause everyone from Dallas I know and talk to knows it exists.
And I'm surprised to see you in the full-on tear down Manziel club. You're the one making mountains out of molehills regarding his recent comments.
You stated it was "unwise, but will probably be insignificant". If it doesn't matter, then explain the unwise part?Really, calling something "insignificant" is tearing down and vitriol? Wow.
Consider it in context. Manziel was also talking about how he wanted to get away from the Johnny Football image which he had created. This was an odd way to display that.

If Bridgwater or Bortles would have given that exact same interview it would have been received totally different. .

Let's not act like that's your only anti-Johnny statement in here. Including the snark for reference.

Maybe I'm simply confusing your abundance of snark for vitriol.![]()
I can buy that. I don't understand how you can't possibly see a positive spin though. (Showing the fierce competitor, showing the determination that won him a heisman, keeping the chip on his shoulder as motivation, etc.)From an outsider it looks like you're a little bit too sensitive about Manziel. Worse has been said about all the top prospects in this class.
I don't care for what Manziel said. I don't see any positive way to spin it. I don't think it will eventually hurt him but it's more likely to hurt than help.
I like that kind of attitude up to a certain point. But you have to be able to turn it off at times.
