O'Brien & His Coaching Staffs

Again, that's one season. There's 5 season previous to that where the results were much better.

That's interesting, and I saw that someone else made essentially the same comment. Where are you seeing that?

From his Tweets

Charles Spencer Jr. ‏@CSpencer77 12h
Terrible RT @Zepp1978: #Texans RT @alexmarvez: Source tells @FOXSports that Paul Dunn is @HoustonTexans new offensive line coach

Charles Spencer Jr. ‏@CSpencer77 12h
he was there my senior year but coached? RT @PatDStat: @CSpencer77 did he coach you at Pitt?

Charles Spencer Jr. ‏@CSpencer77 12h
Poor Duane...

Charles Spencer Jr. ‏@CSpencer77 12h
You? Yeah me too... RT @jasonmcmeekin: @PatDStat @CSpencer77 now I'm really concerned

You mean that in a 6 year tenure 5 winning seasons, 4 playoff seasons, 5 seasons of being in the top 10 in the league in the fewest sacks allowed, and 4 seasons of having an RB that's top 10 in the league (yards per game) warrants a comment like that?

Dunn was an assistant until 2012 when he took over the OL...
Paul Dunn has been with Falcons since 2008, but 2012 is his first season at the helm of the O-line.

The season has been a rocky one at best. The Falcons offensive line has been inconsistent from week to week. While there has been a gradual improvement, they have proved to be the Falcons' biggest liability.

In 2013 Falcons were 32nd in rushing, 30th in Pass Blocking Efficiency, and 31st in Offensive Line rankings.

So yeah, the facts warrant the comment. ATL got worse under Dunn.

ugh... Yuck. Like HOU-TEX, I have felt pretty good about his asst. coaches after reading about them...except this one. Not impressed, but hopefully the dude will elevate his coaching under O'Brien.

It is so critical that the Texans have a solid offensive line that this hire kinda' puts some worry into next season. If they draft a rookie QB and start him immediately, I don't like the parallels to another rookie QB that we all know and love who ended up with FPS [Fetal Position Syndrome] to the point he would sack himself because the line was so swiss cheesy.

I think we all know Dunn wasn't OB's first, second, or even third choice.

Can't always get what you want.

If its any consolation I don't know who the other Spencer is and why his opinion is so damn important.

Charles Spencer? Texans 3rd round pick in 2006. The dude who started out extremely promising until a run-in with the Dayne-train (very) prematurely ended his career?

He played under Dunn in his last year at Pitt. Why would his opinion not be notable?

I just don't like how we go from ferentz, to Munchak, then back to Ferentz but in the end wind up with a Falcons castoff.
...

Have to think McNair holding out for Munchak forced OB to wait on selecting his own guy. Ferentz may have tired of the back-and-forth.

If it turns out to have been a bad hire I expect OB to can him quickly and move on. Too bad we can't get Dante Scarnecchia to come be a part time QC guy here for a year.

Now that I know who he is, it helps. I also questioned the hiring anywhoo.

Maybe it's just me but his offensive staff seems a bit underwhelming. Still in in a wait and see mode with this whole thing.

Anyone know who was his 2nd or 3rd choice for OL coach may have been? I was wondering why he didn't go after Bruce Mathews. He was Munch's OL coach at Tenn for the last few years.

Didn't Ferentz come in for a second interview? Or rumored to?

I think he wanted someone with more experience coaching than Matthews has.

I prefer to be Patriots South rather than Denver South. That system keeps being a success Patriots keep going to the playoffs and contending year in year out. Shannahan couldnt keep a job lol.

I'd really prefer to be HOUSTON than ANYTHING ELSE - South.
The desire to be something else goes back at least as far as Whitmire who wanted to be Atlanta. I'm sick and tired of people wanting to be something else besides HOUSTON.

I think Bruce is only interested in working with Munch, and will again when Much gets another HC gig.

This may shed some light on what happended with Brian Ferentz...
But with the 2013 football season behind them, it is definitely time for head coach Kirk Ferentz and his diligent staff to take on the next task at hand — finishing up the long and arduous task of recruiting.

Usually, the team’s top recruiter is given the task of securing a quality quarterback. For Iowa, this job has usually gone to Kirk Ferentz’s son Brian Ferentz , who is the Hawkeyes’ offensive line coach. Kirk Ferentz spent is playing days as a Hawkeyes under the tutelage of his father before beginning his coaching career under legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick. Since returning to Iowa, the younger Ferentz has proved to be one of his father’s most trusted coaches.
...
...It has been assumed by some that Kirk Ferentz was always keeping the seat warm in Iowa City for his son. The younger Ferentz wouldn’t have assumed the throne by bloodline, alone and was given the opportunity to learn and coach under his father...
Could have been family. Could be he got some guarantees. Could be Texans made him wait too long or he felt he was "second fiddle"?

The Falcons did have some OL injuries. But some have most of NFL teams. Dunn's first year on his own as formal OL coach showed nothing to base a smart choice for OL coach on this team. I believe we will regret this appointment......and can only hope that the rest of offensive coaching will mask this wart......until it can be removed......just make no sense whatsoever to me.

Hopefully this guy shows better than he did in Atlanta...

Falocns o line hasn't been that good and he was let go.

Again, that's one season. There's 5 season previous to that where the results were much better.

All this conjecture with no data... you know I couldn't stand that, soooo....

He'd been at ATL for six seasons; these are the sacks allowed numbers from ESPN.com....

2013 -- 44
2012 -- 29
2011 -- 26
2010 -- 23
2009 -- 27
2008 -- 17

here are the Texans' sacks allowed totals for comparison...

2013 -- 42
2012 -- 28
2011 -- 33
2010 -- 32
2009 -- 25
2008 -- 32

This might not be such an awful hire.
IF he can bring our pass protection up to ATL's pre-2013 levels of proficiency

No.
It ain't just you.

I feel like since he's the HC and an offense oriented one at that, he's got more leeway in my eyes with his offensive staff hires. I think Godsey is a good hire though.

I like the defensive staff, especially RAC and Vrabel. I also like that WE DON"T HAVE MARCIANO ANYMORE PRAISE JESUS, but I think he was canned before O'Brien got here.

Maybe it's just me but his offensive staff seems a bit underwhelming. Still in in a wait and see mode with this whole thing.

Not a lot of big names for sure. Also concerning that we're going without an OC.

Though, Crennel/Kollar/Vrabel is pretty damn exciting.

Yeah the no OC is strange to me too.

How DARE you question O'Brien's decisions!!

Yes, I heard that too and it is a concern for me as well. I was hoping he was just waiting to name his OC when NE was out of the playoffs. Maybe he's waiting for the Super Bowl to end before naming his OC. Yeah sure, that's it, he's waiting for the Super Bowl to end so he can pick his OC from Denver or Seattle. That must be it! Right? :shades:

Your hate's showing. His tweet said, "There's speculation..."

Not hate..........just pointing out that McClain is not as "embedded" with the Texans as some believe.........and much of his predictions in the past year has been misses.......and much of his "news" has been "after the fact."

FWIW, I like McClain. I don't get the hate he gets from people on the board here and definitely don't get it from the bloggers which I see all the time on twitter. Just seems petty.

NFL coaching staffs just don't seem to have the kind of buddy-buddy relationship with the local press like fans would like - and some of them (fans) expect, It used to be that a coach (head coach or some assistant) could say stuff "off the record" and trust the press corps not to blab it. I just don't think that exists any more in this day of twitter and the "I gotta be first to post this on the web or it's old news" mentality of the press and quasi-press. So coaches are a lot more closed-mouth about team "news" than maybe they were "back in the day". Being the senior-most NFL reporter in Houston, fans are disappointed in him for not having all the inside scoop. Frankly speaking, McClain seems to be guessing a lot of the time.

Also, McClain - actually few of the Houston sports press corps - seem to ask the kind of pointed questions they'd like to see asked during pressers.

Then there's his interest in "going Hollywood" seemingly at the expense of his NFL reporting. Most fans don't give a flip that he appears in movies. They (we) want news of the Texans.

That these shortcomings translate into the "hate" you perceive is more an outpouring of disappointment more than actual hate. ...at least I hope it is...

...anyway, that's my guess...

Uh... other than McClain & the NFLNetwork, who? No one here.

FWIW, I like McClain. I don't get the hate he gets from people on the board here and definitely don't get it from the bloggers which I see all the time on twitter. Just seems petty.

Why does "hate" have to come into the conversation? Last year, as was acknowledge by many posters here, it seemed that outside sources would break stories/information about the Texans that you would have expected to have come from our own reporters. I'll leave it at that.

Doug Colman rides fast track to NFL
Colman, 40, recently was named assistant special-teams coach of the Houston Texans.

"We're excited," Colman said in a phone interview, alluding to himself; his wife, Colleen; and four children (with a fifth on the way in April). "The last couple of years, my family and I moved to a bunch of different places since we left Absegami, and let's hope we can stay here a while."

Colman, an Inquirer first-team all-South Jersey linebacker from Ocean City as a senior in 1990, enjoyed a successful college career at Nebraska and then played for the New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, and Cleveland Browns during five NFL seasons.

His final NFL season was 2000 with Cleveland, and after that, coaching was the farthest thing from his mind.

"When I left the NFL, you feel you need a break from it," Colman said. "I was kind of a little bit burned out and needed time off."

That didn't last long...

Coastal Carolina, Absegami and Amsterdam are real coaching hot beds. I bet he learned a lot from that girls basketball coach. Still, he cannot do much harm as assistant coach STs and he can be coached up.

Texans new S&C coach changed Jeremy Lin’s career
But by the time he left Cambridge, Lin wasn’t that same skinny kid anymore. Four years later, he weighed 200 pounds and had a legitimate shot of making it in the NBA.

He can thank the Texans’ new strength and conditioning coach, Craig Fitzgerald, for that. And he does.

“He’s a great, great, great guy,” Lin said after a Rockets practice last week. “I can’t say more about him. He changed my career definitely. When I showed up, I was 170 and I was the weakest player to ever show up in the Harvard basketball program, just weight-wise. And when I left, I was one of the stronger guys there. He just taught me how to be more mentally tough. He pushed me. Man, he’s awesome.”

See, Fitzgerald, whom Bill O’Brien is bringing with him to the Houston Texans from Penn State, was the director of strength and conditioning at Harvard while Lin was in college and had a huge impact on the point guard’s career.
“He just pushes you in ways you don’t think you can be pushed,” said former Penn State defensive lineman Daquan Jones, who is projected to be a high-round draft pick, at the Senior Bowl. “It’s a different type of workout. You test your body in every type of way, in every weather condition. It’s just something that gets you in shape and gets you ready for the football game.”

From what I understand, McNair was instrumental in getting Warren Moon inducted into the H.O.F.

I cut him some slack for that alone.

I thought we were talking about John McClain?
:shades:

How did McNair get into this discussion?

J/K
I know what you meant and I agree.
