O'Brien & His Coaching Staffs

My mistake. Wonder if Munchak would not be a decent OC.

No, he's never called plays. But I don't think that should exclude him from being a successful Head Coach. Which brings up a question...

My opinion is McNair will outbid other teams for Much and crew as OL line coaches. I also think Munchak will get another HC gig after the 2014 season. So does anyone have any concerns with Munch camping out in HouTex for a year "scouting" OB's offense and then moving on with that information???

Too paranoid? Am I becoming Pioli? :tinfoil:

Mike Vrabel might be, under the tutelage of Romeo Crennel, the long term answer for the DC position in Houston, according to NFL Insiders (ESPN)...

  • "Vrabel was the smartest player I've ever been around in my time in the NFL," Field Yates.
  • "I could say without question that he, [Vrabel], was the smartest defensive football player I ever played with," Tedy Bruschi.
  • He was known for his athleticism and leadership. He played with an edge, yet was perhaps defined by his intelligence. Holley wrote how coaches were continually surprised at the amazing recall Vrabel had of formations and tendencies of opponents.

“During his Patriots career, there was no player more respected for his football intellect and revered for his leadership by his teammates than Mike,” Belichick said in a statement Monday. “He was elected a team captain by his peers and is a player who I think everyone knew was destined to become a coach after his NFL playing career was over.

“Mike Vrabel is as well-suited for coaching as any player I have ever coached. He has a tremendous feel for people, players, coaches and what his team needs regardless of the situation. He is outstanding in his knowledge of the game, which contributed to his excellence as a player. I have no doubt Mike will develop tough, intelligent, fundamentally sound winners.”
  • “He is a champion in every sense of the word and I’m confident all of these qualities will make him a great coach,” Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli said Monday. “I cannot overstate my respect for him as a person and a football player. If there were a Hall of Champions, Mike Vrabel would be a first ballot selection. ”

Texans have Mike Vrabel to coach LBs and Bill Kollar back for D line. O'Brien said he will announce staff when its complete.

Pepper Johnson coached D line and LBs with Pats. Was on staff with Bill O'Brien and Crennel. Coached Mike Vrabel.

There's speculation in New England that 14 year def assistant Pepper Johnson resigned so he could be reunited with Romeo Crennel.

Patriots Notebook: Longtime assistant Pepper Johnson to leave
[However, it’s widely believed Johnson was unhappy about being passed over for the vacant defensive coordinator position after Dean Pees left following the 2009 season. Johnson and Matt Patricia were the most trusted defensive assistants in 2010, when the players viewed Belichick as the defensive coordinator, but Patricia earned more time in the spotlight as the play-caller in 2011 and was officially promoted to his current role in 2012.

It seems plausible that Johnson didn’t see any opportunities to climb the coaching ladder with the Patriots, and the chance to step out of Belichick’s shadow might have offered a new path. Johnson first served as the Patriots’ assistant linebackers coach (2000) before advancing to inside linebackers coach (2001-03), defensive line coach (2004-11) and linebackers coach (2012-13).

Johnson also played for Belichick when he was the Giants defensive coordinator, Browns head coach and Jets assistant head coach.

“Today marks a new day for me,” Johnson said in a statement released to the Herald. “Today is a new day full of promise and hope. It is also a day to reflect, as I embark upon a new journey. Today is the first day in (14) years that I am not a part of the New England Patriots, although I will always be a Patriot in my heart. Today also marks the first day in 26 years that I am not working in some capacity with one of greatest head coaches of all time, as well as my friend, Bill Belichick.”

Johnson, who also thanked the Patriots, Robert Kraft and the fan base, is expected to remain in football and could seek employment with the Texans. Their new head coach, former Pats assistant Bill O’Brien, has hired Romeo Crennel as defensive coordinator and Mike Vrabel as the linebackers coach.

The thing is, I'd think the plan -- at this point, anyway -- would be to groom Vrabel for DC.

Good. Important hire.

Munchak took the OL Coach job with the Steelers
My belief is Munch will be a HC after next season, so while I'd love to have him & Bruce I'd rather not if they're only here for a year. Would've been cool, though.

According @alexmarvez #Iowa Oline coach Brian Ferentz is back into the mix as the potential OLine coach for the #Texans.

Munchak may be a very good OL coach, I don't know, but I believe the hiring of him as the Titans HC by the late Bud Adams was somewhat of a fluke and don't expect to see him as a HC again in the few years.

Bruce goes where Munchak goes.

So he wasn't here when Munchak was in Tennessee? I thought he only left because Munchak became HC and offered him OL coach. What can Munchak offer him in Pittsburgh?

I think he might make an ok asst. line coach, but I don't think he is married to Munchak. He get's another offer no telling where he will go

If there's a plan (if I were Crennel) I'd be wanting to "groom" Vrabel & Johnson for HC..... I doubt they have any loyalty for the Texans & though preparing Vrabel/Johnson for HC position may benefit the Texans in the near term, the ultimate goal is to make Vrabel & Johnson HCs.... if they have the aptitude for it.

The track for most (not all) head coaches to be is to become a coordinator 1st. Crennel should have reached an age and have the experience to know that "training" young talented coaches means they are being trained to take his job or to move to another organization as a coordinator.

Understood. No doubt there will be steps along the way & he'll have most likely be a DC before being considered for a HC position. But the ultimate goal is HC

Texans hire Doug Coleman to be the asst STs coach. Looks like O'Brien's giving Lig a chance this season with this dude possibly looking over his shoulder.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...doug-colman-as-assistant-special-teams-coach/
And there's your fallback plan if Lig doesn't measure up.

Colman played collegiately at the University of Nebraska from 1991-95 and was a part of five Big 8 Conference championships, back-to-back national titles in 1994 and 1995. Nebraska finished 25-0 during his final two seasons and went 23-0-1 in league play during his four-year career. In each of his four years, Nebraska played for the national championship, facing Miami (Fla.) in the 1992 Orange Bowl, Florida State in the 1994 Orange Bowl, Miami (Fla.) in the 1995 Orange Bowl and Florida in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl.

Following his collegiate career, Colman was drafted in the sixth round (171st overall pick) of the 1996 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. He played five seasons in the NFL (1996-2000), playing a total of 64 games for the Giants, Tennessee Titans (including Super Bowl XXXIV) and Cleveland Browns.

During his rookie season with the Giants in 1996, he was voted the "Special Teams Player of the Year" after leading the special teams in tackles. He received the same award in 1997 and 1998 and helped lead New York to the NFC East title.

Colman played with the 1999 AFC Champion Tennessee Titans, facing the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXIV. En route to the Super Bowl, Colman was on the field for the "Music City Miracle" against the Buffalo Bills and was awarded a game ball for that contest.

Following the 1999 campaign, he signed with the Oakland Raiders before making the Cleveland Browns' roster for the 2000 season. He also was with the New York Jets organization in 2001.

Hopefully this guy shows better than he did in Atlanta...

Alex Marvez ‏@alexmarvez
Dunn spent the past 6 seasons with the @Atlanta_Falcons. Benton spent the past 8 seasons as @HoustonTexans offensive live coach

Source tells @FOXSports that Paul Dunn is @HoustonTexans new offensive line coach & John Benton is @MiamiDolphins new asst o-line coach

Before he was with the Falcons, he was the offensive line coach for the University of Pittsburgh from 2005-07. He has also coached at Kentucky, Kansas State, Vanderbilt, University of Cincinnati, Maine and Rutgers. Dunn will take one of Bill O'Brien's final position coaching spots.

He began his coaching career at Pitt as a graduate assistant in 1983.
Dave Zangaro ‏@DZangaro
Fun fact about Paul Dunn: He was Dan Marino's college roomate at Pitt.

Heheheh. I see what you did there.

Seriously we are becoming the Patriots South. Just like we used to be Denver South.

I prefer to be Patriots South rather than Denver South. That system keeps being a success Patriots keep going to the playoffs and contending year in year out. Shannahan couldnt keep a job lol.

Hopefully this guy shows better than he did in Atlanta...

You mean that in a 6 year tenure 5 winning seasons, 4 playoff seasons, 5 seasons of being in the top 10 in the league in the fewest sacks allowed, and 4 seasons of having an RB that's top 10 in the league (yards per game) warrants a comment like that?

And he is Wades long lost brother!:toropalm:

lol, yeah he does

I've liked all of O'Brien's hires up until this one. I don't like this hire at all and of all the position coaches, this is one of the most important imo.

I reckon we had a lot of eggs in the Munchak basket, because this is obviously a last resort hire.

Just curious - what don't you like about it? (and I'm asking this question not knowing enough about him to have an opinion either way).

Falocns o line hasn't been that good and he was let go.

Sorry - "The O-Line hasn't been that good" just doesn't mean much to me.

I outlined in my previous quote where prior to last year, they'd been pretty good at both running the ball, and protecting the passer (as well as winning RS games). Last season they had new players at 4 OL positions (3 of them rookies), and a feature RB who was injured most of the season.

I guess I still don't see anything meaningful to me that says he's no good.

Yes, they were bad. Everything they tried throughout the season failed. It was like they weren't prepared

Charles Spencer thinks it's a terrible hire. I asked him why, but doubtful he'll answer me. We'll see

Again, that's one season. There's 5 season previous to that where the results were much better.

Charles Spencer thinks it's a terrible hire. I asked him why, but doubtful he'll answer me.

That's interesting, and I saw that someone else made essentially the same comment. Where are you seeing that?

I just don't like how we go from ferentz, to Munchak, then back to Ferentz but in the end wind up with a Falcons castoff.

We know how getting someone from the Falcons turned out last time.....
