Reading the above write up, I was wondering if we should call him an athletic Brett Favre.

i don't think we should use brady for comparisons. he is such an anomaly
I'd love to see a list of $20M QBs who won the Superbowl AFTER they were paid. I think it is counter productive to commit that many resources to one player, even the QB.The NFL is a QB driven league and the Texans don't have a QB. Only one position in all of football is worth $20+ mil and that is a QB. As bad as things have been the Texans are still smart enough to understand this (let's hope so anyways). If not, whoa is we......

Aaron Rodgers $22M - Injured - Out in WC.
Matt Ryan $20.75M - Sitting at home.
Joe Flacco $20.1M - Sitting at home.
Drew Brees $20M - Won WC - Lost DIV.
Payton Manning $19.2M - In SB.
Jay Cutler $18.1M - Sitting at home.
Tony Romo $18M - Sitting at home.
Matt Stafford $17.7M - Sitting at home.
Eli Manning $16.25M - Sitting at home.
Matt Schaub $15.5M - Sitting at home.
Phillip Rivers $15.3M - Won WC - Lost DIV.
Ben Roethlisberger $14.7M - Sitting at home.
Mark Sanchez $13.5M - Sitting at home.
Sam Bradford $13M - Sitting at home.
Tom Brady $11.4M - Won DIV - Lost CONF
I see no correlation between QB spending and winning.

The man responsible for recruiting Bortles to UCF was Geoff Collins. He was the TE coach at Georgia Tech for a year when Bill O'Brien was OC
Not sure if this really means much, but...
One reason Bortles is a strong candidate is the connection between Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien and UCF coach George O'Leary. O'Brien coached for seven years under O'Leary at Georgia Tech and maintains a close relationship with the Knights coach.
In a Q&A with the Houston Chronicle, O'Brien gave some indication that the relationship with O'Leary and his staff (O'Brien also coached with Charlie Taaffe at Maryland) could be paying early dividends in getting to know Bortles.
Asked about the Knights junior quarterback, here is what O'Brien told the Chronicle:
"Blake is a good-sized guy. He's an athletic guy for his size. He's an accurate passer. The guys who coached him at Central Florida think highly of him as a young man who really studies the game. He works hard at the game."

"Time with Bortles"
If I could spend time with Bortles
The first thing that I'd like to do
spend everyday, him throwing passes my way
Just let him run offense from Florida
If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd savor every day the Texans said You
Again, they would have to draft a RT too
But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do, when defenses are fierce
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go through all our timeouts with
If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty, except for the memory of how
I really wanted the Texans picking you![]()

@Zepp1978 I'd be ok with Bortles. I know it's a huge risk, but I think OB could pull it off and make him the next Roethlisberger.
@THEREALALLENOU @Zepp1978 I'm telling you this emphatically; Bortles is better coming out of college than Locker.
Here's the thing about "Reach at 1". If he's your guy, and you know he wouldn't be there at 33, it's not a reach.

I've compared him to Locker, but I fully agree that he's more developed than Locker was coming out.
Bortles is head and shoulders above Locker in Completion %, TD to INT ratio, QB rating and last possession/game winning drives.
Very similar skill set but further along in his development. Definitely the better prospect but the comparison holds weight, I think.
I see nothing wrong with the comparison at all. Locker was a good shot at getting a franchise QB. Just didn't work out. Had he gone to a team with a functioning offense or defense, he very well could have been a franchise QB.
Bad luck that he went to possum holler

I liked Locker coming out of Washington. His big issue was that he didn't develop at all the last two years he was in school. He was very raw and too reliant on his athleticism coming into the NFL. I would've drafted him with the understanding that he probably isn't playing at all his first two years. Especially since they had Hasselbeck.
I don't think he is a lost cause. He has tools. They just need to be refined. He has improved by baby steps each year. But I don't think franchise QB is in his future either.
Some quotes on the Texans from Walter Football's draft rumor page:
1/24: "Still early but source beleves if its up to Bill O'Brien expect Blake Bortles/UCF at 1st pick or Zach Mettenberger/LSU at the top of rnd 2." - Tony Pauline

Are we still in the dark about what happened to Bortles' velocity this year?
I don't get the Roethlisberger comparisons. The thing that makes Ben Ben, is that he holds onto the ball, he's hard to get on the ground, & he's always looking for the big play.
I don't see that with Bortles. All his size... he goes down pretty easy.
Bortles on Radio Row at SB 48.

But does anyone else see the irony in the comparison to Roethlisberger, a guy who has only played all 16 games twice in ten years?

He mentions how size and strength are important to prevent getting hurt, and then mentions the one big QB who is hurt all the time.

Upon further review, Big Ben has started 142 games out of a possible 160 games. That is DURABLE for most NFL QBs and really doesn't meet with your characterization and exaggeration of "one big QB who is hurt all the time."

Of those a few were "missed" early on when he was healthy but not the starter until Maddox got injured. He also missed time due to the motorcycle accident and appendectomy. Hard to see how those reflect on his football durability.
I think he missed 4 games due to suspension for the whole "rape" thing.
"I just think that when I see him personally and see what a strong guy he is, he looks just like Ben Roethlisberger did when he came out of college 10 years ago," Brandt said. "And I think that strength part of the QB position is really important in the NFL, because guys that are built strong aren't as likely to get hurt as guys who are thinner like Teddy Bridgewater."

What an idiot. This guy is not a doctor and shouldn't be viewed as one. He's a guy that has a platform to say whatever he feels like, but is clearly (EDIT) someone that is not as qualified as a doctor to speak on this.
He's an 80 year old man set on his ways. He's like those scouts that laughed at Brad Pitt in Moneyball because it was something new and innovative he was introducing.
I remember "BIG Ben" almost dying because of an injury suffered on the football field just over a year ago.

Let's speak about truths related to size and not need to break out our resident Dr's to sort truth to it again that some will never accept/respect.
He can see the full field of vision and he will be a beast to take down coupled with his ability to run. He's a talented young super old looking man.
In other news, we now have "trusted" sightings of Bortles #1. This goes along with the others we have seen with TB #1, Manziel #1, Clowney #1, and a trade down scenario, and a trade for Mallet scenario. Obviously all of these are from "trusted" sources... obviously.

Gil Brandt is the most prolific innovative scout ever to be associated with the NFL. There is a saying that says, wisdom is lost on the youth. The above post is a perfect example.
I shake my headand wonder whenever I see folks dismiss Brandt but then are all to happy to jump in bed and believe anything and everything Todd McShay, Mel Kiper, Matt Miller and the dozens of other wannabe's running around masquerading as scouts have to say about anything or anyone.

No one on this website takes those other one's as truth. Much of us read what they say, take it for what it's worth and process it against what we believe to be truths. I am saying he is not a doctor. Show me his MD and I will retract my statement. I can ask any 80 year to throw generalizations and stereotypes out there, doesn't mean I should believe them because they've seen it before.
Montee Kiffin used to be a pretty legit coach, then the game changed, and he didn't change with it. Now he's an "assistant head coach of the defense" AKA about to be fired next year.
