Texans hire Bill O'Brien as HC

I guess that's better than Kubiak, The Quarterback Coddler, who would stroke Schaub's head and let him suckle at his man teet.

Yes, it is.

....and....gross! :kitten:

I can't help thinking about how much happier Watt would probably be with a HC that doesn't put up with bad play, lack of effort, lack of concentration, etc. from his teammates.

Tweets all over the place the Browns have officially cut coach Chud (but retained the staff for now?)

Also, Lombardi HATES the Texans. HATES us. I'm sure the thought of us getting O'Brien drove him crazy and he wanted to compete with us.

Even though the Texans are clearly the better job in the NFL, I guarantee you Lombardi is bashing the Texans to O'Brien, his agent, and the Patriots.

I,m not a fan but rumor has it he has told the texans he wants to see what other teams are offering before deciding . The fact that we are saying we will decide soon says bill is out .:tiphat:

meh, if O'Brien wants to be the next Butch Davis then let him.

According to league sources, some of the concern around O'Brien includes... O'Brien's issues dealing with the AD at Penn State...
The first "issue" sounds like politics to me...
O'Brien spoke to the University Board of Trustees on July 12 as it weighed a proposal to the NCAA to lessen the sanctions. Sources at the meeting have said O'Brien's view is essentially that by not simply accepting the sanctions and moving on, Penn State could be hurting its own cause, or at least the cause of the football program going forward.

O'Brien seems OK with those reports.

"I have been asked many, many questions over the last 19 months about the sanctions so I accepted the invitation and I went down there," he said. "I don't have anything to hide; I just want to do what's right for these kids and this football program. So no, I am not upset about anything."
http://lancasteronline.com/article/...speaks-out-on-Ireland--sanctions-and-QBs.html

...and why two longtime trusted Penn State assistants recently walked away from the program without having other jobs lined up.
Vanderlinden had been at PSU since 2001, was demoted from DC back to LB coach when BO'B was hired. Not surprising he left or was asked to, although I bet he wishes otherwise now.

Fisher was QB coach and may have been redundant with BO'B working closely with his QBs.

As far as...
Belichick disciples and the heavy-handed nature of their power grabs in the past...
Not sure why BO'B gets dinged for other people's actions/behaviors/etc. I wouldn't have touched Mangenius, McDaniels, Pioli, and a few others. But Ozzie Newsome was a front office exec under Belichick... does BO'B get any love for that fact? Nope, doesn't have anything to do with him. You either like the guy and take him at face value or you don't.

I don't think La Canfora's unnamed source quoting amounts to anything more than headline seeking. We'll see...

Who cares? If O'Brian wants to coach the Browns and be the 6th head coach fired in eight years with that organization, so be it. If he wants an owner that is patient and will stick by his coach during tough times (Kubiak in 2010) he will join the Texans. It should be a no brainer for any logical person.

Good point.

I of course could be wrong, but based on the way the reports are coming out, and what McNair and O'Brein are saying, I think it's a done deal, "BOB" will be our next HC, I say there's a 95% chance at this point.

Tuesdays announcement will have Bill O present.

I think McNair was in awe of the Broncos back in the early 2000's when he brought the NFL back to Houston, but the Patriots are his new sparkle in his eye. He will do his best to tap in to the Pats mojo, if the contract details come out, I bet Bill O is getting a huge paycheck.

I hope you're right not that BOB is my first choice. I just want the Texans to get their hc and his staff in place and start preparing for the draft. I going to trust that they pick the right man for the job.

Not to derail the thread into draft talk, but in preparing expectations for a Bill O'Brien draft, we can look at his influence in the New England 2011 draft choices:

1) Nate Solder, OL (Colorado)

2a) Ras-I Dowling, DB (Virginia)

2b) Shane Vereen, RB (California)

3a) Stevan Ridley, RB (LSU)

3b) Ryan Mallet, QB (Arkansas)

5a) Marcus Cannon, OL (TCU)

5b) Lee Smith, TE (Tennessee)

6) Markell Carter, LB (Central Arkansas)

7) Malcon Williams, DB (Trinity Valley CC)

My takeaway is that he has no problem going offense heavy. I would expect his draft for the Texans to get an OT, OG, QB, TE, and RB. That's already five out of seven, so a trade down in any round is likely.

I will be happy with any of the coaches that have been named as candidates so far and a few that haven't. O'Brien seems to be the most risky and have the most upside of any of them. That said - count me in the group that thinks odds are better that he ends up a Brown than a Texan.

-Texans fire Kubiak mid-season to get a jump on their HC search
-Report leaks that O'Brien is leading candidate to take over in Houston
-Report leaks that Texans are rushing the HC decision
-Cleveland fires a 1st year head coach after the last game
-Cleveland has Belichik worshiper Lombardi as GM
-Cleveland interviewed O'Brien last season

1) Nate Solder, OL (Colorado) Starting LT

2a) Ras-I Dowling, DB (Virginia) Injury bust

2b) Shane Vereen, RB (California) Valuable 3rd down back

3a) Stevan Ridley, RB (LSU) Starting RB

3b) Ryan Mallet, QB (Arkansas) Backup QB, Great Value pick

5a) Marcus Cannon, OL (TCU) Starting OG, took a 5th rd flyer on a guy with cancer

5b) Lee Smith, TE (Tennessee) Cut, BB loves his TE's

6) Markell Carter, LB (Central Arkansas) Cut

7) Malcon Williams, DB (Trinity Valley CC) Cut, This is where you should take chances on guys like this.

See above, The Pats came out of this draft with 2 starting OL, 2 starting caliber RB's and a QB that will be ready if anything happens to Brady. Belichick took risks in the 3rd (Mallett Character) 5th (Cannon, cancer) and a couple of talented small school guys in the late rds.

I hope the Texans start drafting like this. Talented but troubled guys like Lyerla and Crowell/Dyer in the 5-6th rd range gives you a chance to get 1-2 rd talent late in the draft. Not all of them will work out. But if 1-2 works out you will build a much more talented roster like the Pats have.

If the Texans are going to truly compete with the Pats they're going to have to take chances like the Pats do.

From the beginning McNair wanted the Texans to have the success of franchises like the Steelers, Patriots, & while I do believe the Broncos was among his list of examples for success, they were much farther down the list. If he was as smitten with Denver, Kubiak would have been our first HC. He obviously had a great interview, but he went with experience.

Not really. I am just stating the FACTS. Did you see a single PSU game this season? I would be that most Texans fans have not.

I get it. YOU had a bad year and you are looking for something new. YOU are now jumping on a bandwagon even though you really don't know anything about Obrien.

Why the hell do you keep asking people if they have watched Penn State play. I'm stationed there and have seen plenty of games "FACT" and I don't know wtf you're talking about.

The Texans organization has been as dynamic and motivated as a smack addict since since 2005; a hard-ass who doesn't tolerate limp wristed losers's mentality is exactly what we need. If the best available such HC is O'Brien, then count me in.

This is a bad analogy.. I think you're severely underestimating the motivation of a smack addict. :) I hope our next head coach is as motivated as a smack addict, because anybody who's as driven to rob from their own mother for his next fix.. I hope the next guy we hire will run over his own mother to secure a win.

Vince Lombardi's name has been invoked...

I think i read that Lombardi had 27 plays . The thing Lombardi did was teach everything that could happen on all 27 plays . The Packers had no surprises .

The power play probably being used 80% of the time according to his recent documentary on A Football Life. Those were the days, 'eh?

BTW, what exactly is it that puts the bug up some of y'all's asses about those 'Denny's Menus'? Lots of coaches use them.

I'm not a Kubiak hater (and I think the fan base will ultimately give him props for what he accomplished for this franchise).

But, my take on the menu was that it appeared to be too much of a crutch for Kubiak. He buried his head in that thing way too much, IMO, when he should have been chewing ass on the sideline or breaking down things to make on-the-fly-adjustments or just teaching his players during the game.

Not to say he never did the above, but too often, he'd have that "what the heck should I do now?" look on his face while staring a hole through that thing. It's not a good look for a HC, and I have little doubt that players feed off of that vibe.

Just my observation of perception, not trying to make anything else out of it.

I agree completely. O'Brien is a gamble, like any potential HC. But if you've got to gamble, go for it all in.

Yes, but figured only old farts know who Arthur Fonzarelli was. :bravo:

Well...I am a charter member of the Old Farts Brigade! :smiliedance:

Funny, I was just watching some Happy Days last week. My kids looked at me like I was nuts and they could not comprehend how it was a huge show back in the day. Everyone wanted to be The Fonz, and he's most likely the reason why the word "cool" is still a major part of my daily vocabulary.

Teams who fired coaches might be checking on Bill O'Brien and find out he's closing in on a new job in Houston.

Houston meet the coach that is going to lead us to the promised land; SUPER BOWL. This is my number 1 guy. Best Christmas EVER!!!

I doubt it, it was tweeted 2 hours ago and still nothing official. Looks like someone trying to make a name for themselves by "breaking" news that hasn't yet happened but is likely to happen.

Yup, just checked. This same guy said Les Miles was going to Penn State a while back.

#Texans are not planning on interviewing #Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt, per source, now that his team in the playoffs. O’Brien’s job to win.

That stare.....will that the look he gives Schuab when he asks if if he can still be our QB?

ex-NE Coordinators always scare me with how badly they do at being HC's of other NFL teams, however, in his time as an OC for NE (08-11) he brought in a lot of no huddle principals into the NFL and also used 2TE sets in innovative and new ways. Those are a few notable things that he contributed to the Pats past being a cog in the machine. I really don't think there are a lot of great names in the coaching pool this offseason so I'm not completely against the hire, I'm just more "blah" about it.

This being based on the recent McClain tweet posted earlier.

I can't don anything other than stare at his chin. Is it another mouth? Blow hole? Does he have a pet squirrel that stores nuts in there for winter?

I'm frightened.
