Texans Tornado - Does Anyone Miss The Oilers?

Man, this has been one rough day/week/month/season as a Texans fan. I sure miss the "simple" days as an Oilers fan, when the only weekly repercussions we heard about was the fact that Earl Campbell wasn't breaking 100 yards every game.

Or later, why did coaching call-off Warren Moon's passing escapade against the Chiefs, when he could have thrown probably into the 600-yard range to break an NFL record.

Even the debacle in Buffalo seems kinda pale to the mess that has seemed to evolve in the Texans camp.

Do I need Prozac or Zoloft?

I need some whine with this :cheese:

You miss things from before you were born?

Heck, surprised you remember anything since they left when you were 4.

Now that Adams is gone, I've got nothing left in me to hate on the Titans with. They are a division foe, that's it. The Dolts are more worthy of hate to me than the Titans.

This is what I was thinking.

I miss them.

But being an Oilers fan was much more like this season as a Texans fan.

I do, but I also miss being at U.H. and macking on top heavy, thick thighed Asian chicks in short shorts at the University Centre. The past is the past. Remember it, smile and get back to present day.

Never knew the oilers really. I remember watching but I was too young to actually consider myself a fan...and I'm older than you are OP...

I will say I'm not impressed with this texans organization.

I'm sure OP misses pooping his diapers and eating Cheerios while Steve McNair and Eddie George were starting to do their things.

Umm... those are some rosey glasses you're wearing.

Extremely rosey.

Not really rosey, more like blank. There is not a lot of things about the Oilers I'd like to revisit other than perhaps just seeing Bum and Earl doing their thing on film again. I loved the Oilers, but they were a frigging plane crash. No matter what happened, you always had your joy smashed at some point. Just like the Texans.

The past always seems better because of the way the brain stores memories. they become corrupt, just ask any lawyer about that and witnesses.

Love ya Blue is gone, now I don't know what we have, but at least it sometimes resembles an NFL team which is more than we had after our last dumb ass owner skipped town.

I tried to never look back after '96.

I do reminisce with old Oilers fans about the way things were, but it was a different time and different era.

I allowed myself to get a little nostalgic when Bum passed away. Part of it is just the fun memories of my childhood and the innocence of being a young fan. I never got wrapped up in any of the front office stuff and was all about Luv Ya Blue, Earl, Bum, Oiler Cannonball, that goofy fight song, and visits to the Astrodome (always a highlight and huge event as a kid).

A large part of that kid fan innocence died in January 1993. I was a koolaid drinking fool. This was before the internet and before the media over-saturation. You got news from newspapers and some of the sports talk shows on news radio (remember the Three Amigos with Ed Fowler and Kenny Hand?). Man, I was in my front yard celebrating with a buddy when the Oilers were 28-3 over the Bills that January day. It took me two weeks to come out of the depressing funk, and while the next season was a blast and I watched every moment, something was missing. Optimistic belief, I guess, replaced by little seeds of cynicism.

When Bud started his usual shenanigans to milk the city for a stadium, I was like the rest of the Oilers fan collective. Shut up, Bud, you still have tens of millions to pay off for the recent Astrodome renovation. I don't think anyone really took his threats seriously...until it was too late.

Even then, it took the absence of football for several years for Houston football fans to realize what we lost.

It's coming up on 20 years since the Oilers left. I made peace with it a long time ago and moved on. My kids still bring me Oilers merchandise and I sometimes find something in storage or warehouse. I clean it up and give it to my favorite Oilers memorabilia curator. Herv's Oiler museum is going to be epic!

I've got to be honest, though. I'm a Texans fan for life (well, as long as they stay in Houston). But there is something missing that will never be there, and that is the lifelong thread of being a fan of a team because your folks were fans and passed it down. My kids will have the attachment with the Texans, but for me, it will always be split between what was then and what is now. There is no connecting the two, no bridge to make it whole. The Houston Oilers are dead, but the memories remain. It's nice to share with others that have the memories, but the older we get, the more they sort of fade and we slowly become old men talking about the good ol' days, just like hearing my grandfather talk about the Brooklyn Dodgers.

God I will NEVER forget the reaction of ESPN's crew when Buddy went after Gilbride. Circus indeed.

NFL Films is devoting an episode of "A Football Life" to the '93 Oilers. I believe it will air in the next few weeks. I look forward to it. :)

Same here. I think it's great to have the Texans, but I can't get as excited about it as I was when I was a kid watching the Oilers play. I think my first Oilers punch to the face was when Bum was fired and Earl went to the Saints. It just seems like my childhood fandom was built on a lot of hope only to always have the rug snatched out from under me.

I want to give myself up to it and enjoy it that way again, but my adulthood cynicism will never allow it.

I have the Oilers in a box in my mental attic. Once in a while I'll go through it and remember. So many memories. Very fond memories.

The Texans are showing me, however, that it's more fun to remember what was than to be living the experience. :choke:

I didn't get into football until the Oilers were long gone. The year before the Texans existence I was a partial Buccaneer fan because that was the team my older brother rooted for (he liked Sapp & Alstott). I had no real connection to the Bucs, so when the Texans came around I jumped on board. :jogger:

I miss walking into the Astrodome and seeing that green green Astroturf for the first time. Every time I saw it, it was as if I'd never seen it before.

So true, my Dad (rest his soul), left me a chest full of VHS tapes I grew up watching. It's as if they were still a Houston team. From the 1-13 seasons to clinching the AFC Central title, I have laboriously savored watching those days - that I can go over and over again at my convenience.

The loft at our little cabin in the country has been my escape lately. Fond of old memories created - and fumbling through what is unfolding before our eyes with the incompetency of "Bulls On Parade"....Jerome Solomon nailed it in his article in yesterday's Chronicle, "a joke of a team".

Nope. Don't miss them at all. I miss some of the players, but never the team. The Oilers pissed me off way more than the Texans have at any point. From the firing of Bum to the Ed Biles and Hugh Campbell years to the antics of Bud Adams to the string of creative new ways to break the fans hearts in the playoffs, they were more of a train wreck than the Texans are. And that's before you get to the fun stuff like coaches punching each other, Glanville's eccentricities, and off field incidents like Jeff Alm.

Plus, I just never did like that blue. Oilers were my first sports love, but I never did wear that blue very much.

Yeah, I agree completely. I vividly remember my first time to walk into the Astrodome and looking up. I just marveled at it, like I was on an alien planet. I remember just staring at the top of the dome during the game (and subsequent events), checking out the frame structure, imagining walking on those catwalks looking down, and just being absorbed by it.

It was always magical to go to the Astrodome as a kid. I remember the night events and seeing the glow coming from the roof, like it was a space alien mothership or something equally exotic. Amazing stuff as a kid.

that and the early years haze of smog that seemed to form clouds inside the dome from most of the population chain smoking.

Yeah. Such a shame the Texas Tornado failed to stick here. The rubber tires just couldn't handle the salt here. I was fortunate to have ridden it though.

Oh... The TEXANS tornado? Lol. More like a 10mph wind. Gosh, this season has just melted out of my heart.
