I have no idea how the two are even close to being related other than they both were drafted last year and play WR.
I'm pretty sure he's pointing out that you CAN cut a player you used a high draft pick on if he's not cutting it.

Why isn't Martin returning punts/kicks? In my opinion, he's the most capable returner right now. He's fast and quick.

Keo's the guy who showed up at the combine with 20% body fat as a defensive back. Fail. And he's supposed to be returning kicks and punts? Please tell me it's a joke.
I wonder if they want to lighten Martin's load a bit to see what he can do with less responsibility on teams. And also to see some plan B's since Bonner has been missing some time with his hamstring. Hamstring issues are a bother because they heal when they heal and you can't tough your way through them. Body says run, leg says HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Wrong thread, but Demps just took back a Kickoff for a TD for the Chiefs........ The Eagles might as well let Maehl return kicks at this point. At least we can say we groom great returners.

Could be Keo is saving a gear that nobody has ever seen, not even himself ?
But seriously, maybe Keo is better than Martin when it comes to ball security, atleast that's how the coaching staff may very well feel and that's all that really counts, and ultimately the #1 priority for kick and punt return guys is hanging onto the ball.
But why all the abuse for Shiloh, why not be happy for a guy who is clearly not a superior physical specimen or gifted athlete, but apparently has overcome his physical limitations to perhaps carve out his own little niche in the NFL.
Perhaps Martin may be having trouble earning a spot as just a WR & Shilo is having trouble earning a spot as just a Safety.

History has thus repeated itself. But when the lights go on in ~3 weeks, there better be historical separation from last year.
Actually, Martin's camp this year is MUCH better than last year. So it isn't just history happening again.

I think that some of the hype out of last year's camp was pro-Martin because Kubiak had to pick one of the rookies to feature, and he was the most consistent out of a very inconsistent group.

But seriously, in camp, Martin has looked much better than the non-Andre, DeAndre guys, and he was doing it a lot against first team defense.

I was surprised by his performance the first preseason game. He can't have that keep happening.

(As an aside, the only person who gets more angry at dropped balls than Kubiak is Hopkins. Very angry body language, even in drills).

This is getting ridiculous. When is enough, enough?

Fire Joe Marciano immediately. Non-stop poor assessment of special teams talent. Gave up the 2nd most yards on returns last year... I'm done.

I can be a super pessimist sometimes, but I'm starting to get this sinking feeling in my stomach that we are going to lose in the AFC championship game to the Broncos and the difference is going to be a T Holliday kick returned to the house.

Marciano and Martin/Keo/Manning/whoever, please prove me wrong or please have Marciano exit from the building.

Since this is the part where we complain about Marciano:

Watch KC's special teams play at some point this season (pre or regular doesn't matter). Then think about how that was the same ST's coach (Dave Toub, who will probably come up for a HC job at some point) that was with Chicago with Lovie Smith for all those years they had excellent ST's.

Texans could've probably landed that guy too if they had wanted, if he's successful, the team would be highly successful and would probably speed up a possible promotion. This is my biggest complaint from the offseason, is that we didn't ****can Marciano and hire that guy.

If we are speaking of coaching, then yes I agree. I don't know how you can lay the talent assessment on Coach Joe. He banged the table on draft day for Holliday. He kept pushing Holliday out there. It was Kubiak and Rick Smith that felt Holliday wasn't one of the 53 best players on the team. They've given Marciano the lemons and Coach Joe has turned them into...lemons.

Kubiak: we've kept punter Shane Lechler out as precaution.

Kubiak: we got good news yesterday on Ed Reed. Has been working w hip specialist in Atlanta, was here at game last night.

Kubiak: no decision will be made on a backup QB until after preseason.

Kubiak: Schaub will play majority of game vs Saints next week.

Kubiak: Arian Foster still has a sore back, won't practice tomorrow. Neither will Mercilus.

Kubiak: we expect Posey & Williams on practice field tomorrow.

Kubiak: Hopkins is better today, will start the concussion protocol tomorrow.
Mark Berman ‏@MarkBermanFox26
Gary Kubiak didn't rule out keeping 3 quarterbacks. Both T.J. Yates & Case Keenum played well last night as they compete for back-up QB job.

Gary Kubiak says they've received good news on progress of safety Ed Reed, who remains on PUP. Kubiak said Reed was w/ the team last night.

Gary Kubiak says decision on back-up QB could be made week of opener.
They both r making it real hard on me. Both r playing very well.

Gary Kubiak says Arian Foster has had some injections to help with his sore back and they are working through that process.

Gary Kubaik says WR DeVier Posey, who has been on PUP, is expected back on the field tomorrow.

Gary Kubiak says RB Arian Foster (sore back) will not be on the field tomorrow. Doctors determined yesterday Foster needs a few more days.
Marc Vandermeer ‏@TexansVoice
Kubiak: QBs have all played well. Schaub will play most of game vs Saints. Decision later in the week on who is first off bench

Kubiak: no Whitney tomorrow. Still out with hamstring.

Kubiak: Arian's back needs a few more days. Has had injections to alleviate soreness.
Brian T. Smith ‏@ChronBrianSmith
'The running back picture is concerning to me' - #Texans' Arian Foster won't return to practice; receiving injections

#Texans' Arian Foster had injections before first preseason game. Has had MRIs. "Everything looks fine," Kubiak said. #NFL

#Texans' Kubiak "not there yet" regarding being concerned about Arian Foster being ready for season opener. Is concerned about reps, though.

#Texans received "good news" about Ed Reed and he is "ahead." Trying to "push toward" beginning of season. "Lot of good progress." #NFL

#Texans' Kubiak said Yates, Keenum decision not imminent. Could share time for final game vs. #Cowboys. #NFL

No change between Yates, Keenum. #Texans' Matt Schaub will play majority of game vs. #Saints.

#Texans' Kubiak said Swearinger made a football play on #Dolphins' Keller. Said all tackling targets are now "shoulders down" in #NFL.

#Texans' Arian Foster is going through an "injection process" for back that is causing some soreness.

#Texans plan to continue to rest Arian Foster (back) because of soreness. Will likely rest a few more days.

#Texans' Posey, Williams will return Monday. Arian Foster not expected to return.

#Texans' DeAndre Hopkins is "better" and will start concussion protocol. #NFL
John McClain ‏@McClain_on_NFL
Kubiak said he's concerned about his return game. "We've got to do it better," he said. Karim will return kicks against Saints.

Kubiak said he hasn't decided if he'll keep 3 QBs, but it's hard to imagine him keeping 2 based on how well Yates and Keenum have played.

Kubiak said Foster got injections before Minnesota game and he said "They tell me these injections take time. We're taking our time."

Kubiak said none of backs competing for 3rd spot has separated himself although Deji Karim has a slight advantage.

WR DeVier Posey will come off PUP and join his teammates at practice Monday. Has recovered from Achilles surgery in February.

Kubiak said WR DeAndre Hopkins is better but will undergo concussion protocol.

S Shiloh Keo (quad contusion) has a better chance of playing against Saints than Eddie Pleasant (knee sprain). CB Brandon Harris may move.

Kubiak said Foster has back pain that's gone into his legs. I don't think he'll play in preseason.

Arian Foster will not return to practice Monday. Doctors told Gary Kubiak he needs more days off. Got injections in back to alleviate pain

NT Terrell McClain, who didn't start impressing anyone until preseason games, is a solid No. 2 behind Earl Mitchell. McClain's been superb.

With Ed Reed on PUP, Shiloh Keo (quad contusion) and Eddie Pleasant (knee) out, CB Brandon Harris might have to move to safety.
Adam Wexler ‏@awexler
Kubiak said Keo (quad) is day-to-day, should be ok for Sun. Eddie (Pleasant) also day-to-day, but not quite as close as Keo #Texans

Kubiak: Arian Foster will not be back tomorrow. Doctors say he needs a few more days (at least) before he gets out there #Texans

I don't listen to 610 a ton, but heard a while ago them discussing ST and as it regards Kubiak's penchant for conservatism on 3rd downs.

I mean I think they had a point about how the Texans on 3rd down almost always play it safe unless something is wide open. So, you constantly see the QB's using the check down option to a back or TE or underneath WR route hoping they can then run for it. That drives me crazy.

So, obviously that means you are playing the field position game. Yet, you don't apparently care enough about field position to make the change in the offseason that could potentially yield better results. It's very much an oxymoron. I mean I love coach Joe the man. But he stinks as a coach. He needed to be gone, and Kubes has put his stamp of approval on being 32nd in a 32 team league so this is now on Kubes!

I believe that's correct; Monday (or the day after game day) is film review then the next day is an off day (or treatment day for gimpy ones) and Weds is back to the grind.

I'm wondering if this is going to change when Lechler doesn't need the extra yards. Might as well throw it on 3rd and long.

I think we're putting the onus on the wrong guy here. I believe it was Matt that chose the check down, or maybe even changed to a run/draw play on those 3rd & long situations.

I'm hoping it was because he didn't like his receiving options. I've heard Kubiak & Schaub talk about how coverages take away Andre.. I just find that hard to believe. But even if that was the case, I'd rather they snap the ball, give him a chance, then throw it away if it's not there.

But with DeAndre getting into the mix, Graham becoming a much better receiver, & Schaub getting more comfy with LeStar & KeShawn Matt will trust his route combinations & go with the play.

At the same time, everybody throws the ball underneath from time to time in 3rd & long situations. We need to expect our receivers to make a play & get us that first down when needed.

Matt threw a wheel route to Ben Tate the other day on 3rd & long. As Tate approached the line, he did a little dance to try & juke the defender at the sticks.... if I were Chick Harris I'd have had him on the sideline giving him the what for. We don't need him to pick up 30 yards. We need him to drop his shoulder & run through anyone dumb enough to camp on the first down marker.

We picked up the first anyway, but the "situational recognition" Ben showed there, shouldn't be acceptable.

Injury comments by Kubiak after today's practice:

(on if there are any injury updates) “No, pretty much what I told y’all yesterday, (OLB) Whitney (Mercilus) did not make it back today. (RB) Arian (Foster) did not make it back today. (T Brennan) Williams made it back and (WR DeVier) Posey made it back. DeVier looked good running around. Williams didn’t do much, just some individual stuff, so we’ll see.”

(on if he still presumes RB Arian Foster will be back to open the season) “Yes, I am because I watch him work. I’ve been watching him. He’s basically going through practices or has been since we’ve been in camp on his own with (Head Athletic Trainer) Geoff (Kaplan) and obviously there’s been a little setback as we try to get the soreness out of him. From what I’ve seen, yes, because it’s not like he’s been standing around for the last three weeks, but obviously want to get him back out here as quick as we can.”

(on if he has a date in mind for when RB Arian Foster will be back) “Guys, if I had a one, I would give it to you.”

(on if there’s not a date for when panic sets in if RB Arian Foster is not back) “Well, today was my date and that one didn’t work. We just have some patience here and, everything they’re telling us, I listen to and they’re very positive about everything. We’ll just have to see.”

(on WR DeVier Posey being back at practice) “Yeah, it’s just you’re proud of him number one, and boy, has he worked. I think we went into this thing thinking he probably wasn’t a decision about PUP earlier, but now, depending on how this week and next week goes, we’ve got a decision to make. So if he’s ready to go earlier this season that we thought, that’s going to be a big plus for our team.”

(on what WR DeVier Posey has been able to accomplish) “First off, at the end of the year last year, he was playing like a starter for us. Let’s remember that, he was playing a lot of football and playing well. He’s a very confident kid. He was playing good for (special teams coordinator) Joe (Marciano). Boy, it would be a big bonus if he’s ready to go.”

(on if he sees OLB Whitney Mercilus playing in the preseason) “Well, we are concerned because we thought he would definitely be back today. We were working all along towards New Orleans. Now, that doesn’t mean we’re still not going to get there. It’s only Monday. We start our week on Wednesday, but Whitney’s a very young player. He needs to play. We’ve got to do what we’ve got to do to get him healthy. They said no, not yet. That’s all I can do.”

(on if there’s anything new on the injuries at safety) “(FS Shiloh) Keo’s doing really good. He actually took some portions of practice today. (SS) Eddie (Pleasant) did nothing, but I think I told you guys that Keo will be ahead of Eddie as far as Keo’s got a good chance to play this week. Eddie, I don’t know.”

(on if it’s going to be tough for the safety position on Sunday with all of the injuries) “(S Orhian) Johnson’s back too, which we had a concern in the game. Not quite in as bad of shape as we were during the game with those guys being out. If Keo makes it back and Johnson is fine this week, I think we can hold up.”

(on the young safeties) “The thing I’ve been impressed with, they got better on special teams because that’s been most of their work and then obviously they’ll play a lot this week and next week. (S Orhian) Johnson’s a big body. (CB Travis) Howard’s done some good stuff on special teams, the other corner. But we’ll see. They’re fixing to play a lot.”

(on if there is anything new on FS Ed Reed) “No, we’re just going through the same protocol that we did last week. We sent him back to Atlanta because it’s such a positive step for him. All I Know is all indications are things are going really, really good. We’re trying to listen to him and make sure we’re doing the right thing.”

(on if the work FS Ed Reed is doing in Atlanta is really helping him) “Yeah, it’s good for his confidence. I know that because that’s the guy he went through the process with before. (Head Athletic Trainer) Geoff Kaplan’s worked with him and done a good job. We’ll proceed with that this week and probably have the actual surgeon look at him before this week is out.”

(on if there’s no way WR DeAndre Hopkins can play Sunday) “Yeah, you could. There’s five stages, but there’s certain stages; you can pass like two stages in a day. I don’t know exactly how they all come about, but I will say this, he’s not feeling very good today. So he’s not out here at all. We’ll start over again tomorrow and see where we’re at. There’s always a chance you can play the following week depending on how quickly you’re involved in the protocol process.”
According to NFL Concussion Protocol, Hopkins is almost assured of not being allowed to return for Sunday's game.

Well, Hopkins not feeling well on Monday means its a real deal concussion and strike one for him. Important for Hopkins to be 100% honest with team doctors and not cover up symptoms just to get back on the field sooner. Texans need to be very cautious with him... this could last a while.

It's sorta concerning how easily he was concussed. I know it doesn't take much to cause a concussion, but he looked to have barely grazed the turf on the play I think it happened.

I guess my point is, and to be blunt, if he's concussed that easily he might have issues early in his career

I would dare say that virtually no one may remember, but Hopkins DID have a previously documented concussion. It occurred in 2011 when he was involved in an automobile accident on the way to practice the week before the Orange Bowl. Of course, he was still allowed to play in the Bowl (concussed Tuesday, played Saturday).............a joke, in that the NCAA to this day has no standard protocol for concussions........although they have strict protocols for their athletes concerning texting and not allowing cream cheese to be served on the athletes' bagels........................

When the player has any history of previous concussion, this is heavily weighted through the final protocol, with additional caution and time taken to deem the player ready to return.

That wasn't a light graze, he gave it a pretty solid hit. It doesn't look that bad if you just watch the play but if you watch his head, it is. And the blow came to the side of the head at an angle which is, from my understanding, particularly susceptible to concussions.

It's got me worried, though. We might have to pull a Detroit Lions and draft WRs in the first in multiple years to get the WR2 fixed.

So now Hopkins has gone from 1-2 times more likely to receive a concussion after having had his first one, to 2-4 times more likely to receive a concussion after his second one.

Yep, but if you don't want Hopkins going over the middle, then that means when Hopkins is in (Which should be a lot this season) other teams would know he's not going over the middle and may make covering him easier on opposing DB's.

As the NFL has evolved, the slot receiver has become a more and more dangerous position to play.

I came across this piece published earlier this year that follows the history of the slot receiver from the original concept introduced by Al Davis.

A History of NFL Slot Receivers: Are They Playing with Fire in Today's League?

If nothing changes, slot receivers will replace running backs as the "disposable" skill position player: draft a fast guy; plug him in; cut him when he loses a step, shreds a knee or breaks his brain.
I can't really argue with the conclusion.
