Training camp 2013

It's happening.

Sounds like a bug must be going through the locker room.

Stephanie Stradley ‏@StephStradley 4m
Kubiak: Ben Jones sick. Practiced sick. Then got carted off. /looked like needed to throw up.

Marc Vandermeer ‏@TexansVoice 7m
Kubiak: Trevardo is day to day. Ben Jones is I'll but made it thru most of practice. Wasn't pleased with offense overall.

Stephanie Stradley ‏@StephStradley 8m
@HoustonTexans camp: not happy w/ offense today, happy w/ defense. Bunch of vets sat today.

This talk about taking Posey off PUP is interesting. Didn't think it'd be this soon

Stephanie Stradley ‏@StephStradley 3m
Kubiak is talking about bringing WR Posey off of PUP after next game.

I just assumed posey would be there game 1...that's why I've been putting him on my rosters. Every time I've heard him talk he has confidently said game 1.....so I believed him.

I did not expect that. I was expecting him to sit and rehab until mid-season.

Me too, considering the injury

Hope so. I'd feel a little better about our WRs after AJ and D-dre. Posey was coming on strong towards the end of the season.

Posey did a lot of research on guys who returned from Achilles injuries in the past. Went back and watched Ravens film of Suggs. #Texans

Posey told Kubiak after his Achilles tear he'd be ready week 1. He was in a wheelchair & Kubiak looked at him like he was crazy. #Texa

Schaub missed yesterday and Monday's practices to attend his grandfather's funeral. #Texans

Matt Schaub lost his maternal grandfather. He was 90 and very close to Schaub. #Texans

James Palmer ‏@JPalmerCSN
of the 9 #Texans draft picks, Swearinger, Hopkins, Quessenberry and Griffin are the only ones that haven't missed time. #Texans #Texanstalk

"This is a big week for him. He's going to play a lot of football." Kubiak on Sam Montgomery. Look for Sonic Sam to play a lot of ST.

Owen Daniels said his brother who is walking on at U of H has "far more ability" then he ever had. #texans

Posey talked a lot about how he changed his diet while rehabbing. How certain foods affect the soft tissues of the body. #texans

Posey said his doctor is ok with him coming back for San Diego. #texans

Asked about being ready for San Diego,"oh yeah". #texans

Posey said this has been a life changing experience. Added that he hasn't taken a day off since surgery. #texans

Kubiak said Posey told him after his surgery that "Don't count him out" #texans

Kubiak said Posey is close to being lifted off the pup list as soon as after Saturdays game. #texans

Greg Bailey ‏@GregBailey13
Antonio Smith tutorial for Sam Montgomery... Teaching hand position, leverage. Last ones on the field. #Texans

Watching rookie Sam Montgomery doing extra work with Antonio Smith. The kid from LSU is way behind. Smith trying to help. Great leadership.

Tackle Duane Brown praises rookie David Quessenberry again. The 6th rd pick got some work with starters today at guard. Looks good. #Texans

QB Matt Schaub glad to be back. Where he belongs. Schaub not worried about injuries on line. Long way to go to regular season. #Texans

Gary Kubiak not thrilled with today's workout. Really pushed the pace. Team lagged a little. Nothing major. #Texans

John McClain ‏@McClain_on_NFL
Andre Johnson reiterated he's happy to have HGH testing if it makes league clean. "Guys that are clean have nothing to worry about."

A golf cart almost hit Matt Schaub during practice. "It's a good thing I've got such nimble feet. That's the youthfulness coach talks about"

Drew Dougherty ‏@DoughertyDrew
Ultimately, both Kubiak & Devier Posey think the WR could play in a #Texans preseason game.

Also fwiw, #Texans WR Devier Posey said he's close to being able to dunk a basketball.

WR Devier Posey said he feels "close" to coming back from achilles injury and just needs to get his conditioning up.
Dave Zangaro ‏@DZangaro
Four of nine #Texans draft picks weren't healthy enough to practice today: Brennan Williams, Trevardo Williams, Alan Bonner, Chris Jones.

It's important to note that if Posey does get taken off Active/PUP and practices, he's no longer eligible for regular season PUP
Jayson Braddock ‏@JaysonBraddock
There are few on the team that Schaub has more chemistry with than Garrett Graham. Has to be a big part of the future of Houston's franchise

Keo looked good today on all underneath routes. Getting several PBUs & talking some trash.

Little shoving between McCain & Boren, then Keo comes over work some quick words. Nothing escalated.

It's nothing new to watch Kareem play like a talented veteran now, but the patience & comfort in which he plays is amazing.l

Favorite play of the day. Schaub EZ fade to DeAndre, he high points over Kareem, as he's coming down, Jackson patiently knocks it out.

How much is batting passes part of the culture for the Texans? Tim, Watt, & Earl all jumped at the same time, zero passing lane. Tim gets BB

Tim Jamison played well in Texans preseason game. He's got rewarded for it with first reps with Antonio Smith talking the day off.

Antonio Smith spent 30 minutes after practice working with and/or coaching Sam Montgomery. Lot of veteran techniques & Sam was a sponge.

Kubiak on backups playing order for Dolphins, “Like I said, my thought process right now is for Case to go second, so that I can get this thing evened out in the long haul. That’s part of the deal, but whatever happens, they’re going to end up playing right now.”

Hey Schaub, just pretend those big guys rushing at you are golf carts, so the rest of us can see those nimble feet.

Can you imagine if Schaub gets taken out by a golf cart at practice?!

That'd be a dumpster fire.

Geez, no kidding. Can you imagine losing the season to that? They need to give whoever was driving that cart a field sobriety test.

Wow, I've gained a whole new level of respect for Posey. All this talk about how he lacked work ethic last year can be completely thrown out of the window now.

If he's able to be 85-90% of what he was at the end of the year last year for the Texans early on he's going to help the team.

Must say I'm pretty darned impressed with Devier Posey. His attitude, his commitment, the research he's done, his work ethic ..... to come back this quickly from such a devastating injury is impressive. Whether he contributes this year or not, I have to say I'm 100% in this young man's corner for the way he has carried himself throughout.

My hat's off to him...

Talk from who? I don't remember hearing talk of that nature. My understanding was that it took him a little longer to grasp the playbook. Had nothing to do with work ethic

Early on in the offseason last year Kubiak made some comments about him not being in football shape and of course people jumped to the conclusion that he lacked work ethic. In Kubiak's words he said things like "He needs to be able to run all day".

But that had more to do with not playing football for so long because of his suspensions.

The Texans picked him up, because of the work ethic he showed while suspended & the work he put in to help the other members of the team.

He's a solid Dude, very Texans worthy.

Of course most people know that TK, and the majority of people went to bat for him. Just go to this original Posey thread. I never once questioned this, but there were a couple of people who did. Nothing wrong with the people that did either. I think its easy to take Kubiak's quotes and run with them because he always seems to take digs at players he's trying to push, especially younger players.

I was saying the same thing.
At least, I was quite positive that he would play this year.
I never ruled him out for game 1, but didn't want to get my hope up too high.

So are we going to carry six?

Depends on how many RB's and OL we end up carrying. If we do 8 OL, and 3 RB's (with 1 FB) we'll probably carry 6, although I can definitely see Posey taking Jean's place if we only go 5 (Andre, DeAndre, KeShawn, Posey, Bonner).

I see them cutting martin before jean IMO.

I think they like Martin more than Jean. I think he's higher up on the depth chart.

If anything, I think it's Bonner that's got to be careful or he'll end up on the PS. For me, I see the list as:

1. AJ
2. DH
3. Posey -- Depending on his conditioning.
4. Martin
5. Bonner
6. Jean
7. Lemon
8. Cruz/EZ/Smith

Dont see how some here think Bonner is ahead of jean at this point either. I'd say

AJ
Hopkins
Posey
Jean
Martin

Same blocking looked pretty good for D manning when he was in.

Manning is an elite return man. I never said Martin was Manning. Simply said he brings value which he does. The blocking for much of the year was bad. There is a reason we hired an Assistant Special Teams coach. There's a problem there everyone recognizes.

That's interesting. I'd consider cutting Martin. At least jean has shown big play ability. Martin is a slot player that struggle to catch the ball in traffic. And I have not really seen him abuse coverage or anything offensively really. I suppose it's there somewhere, but I haven't seen it.

Cut time is really going to be interesting. Do the coaches have the stones to cut a recent draft pick in order to keepan udfa that has outplayed them? Also, do they gamble cutting a guy that is better now with hopes that the guy they're keeping has the higher potential?

No it wasn't. I remember specifically they had some starters in on the ST's units that were not there in the regular season. This was pointed out at least in the Patriots game that I know of (I didn't watch the Bengals game broadcast until later since I was at the game).

U said the blocking was bad, nothing about how elite either guy was or was not.

The blocking on special teams was terrible last year. You brought up Manning and I said Martin's not the returner Manning is. You can still have good returns with a returner of Martin's caliber though with good blocking. We sucked in that area most of the year. No one in the organization can argue against that.

The guy I want to see is Lemon.

I think I saw him catch one pass the other night. Just his body language on that catch has me intrigued. He looked like a top caliber athlete. Very smooth footwork, effortless catch...I'm going to have to look some info up on him...

With posey just coming back from major surgery i imagine they go with 6 WRs and i believe on of the 6 will be jean.

That's tough to say right now I think. You have some injury question marks with Smith and Reed. Do you carry an extra man at those positions is those guys aren't ready to go week 1? I can't say what I think they'll do at this point because there are too many question marks.

I'm hearing Tom Brady left practise with a knee injury and then returned. Will try to validate.

Edit: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...ady-leaves-practice-with-apparent-knee-injury
"Greg Bedard of TheMMQB.com watched Brady grab his left knee, limp off, before briefly returning to the field. Brady reportedly did not look comfortable and then had the knee checked out by trainers"

http://telly.com/13APF8V <--- video of said injury

EDIT: Nate Solder gets backed into Brady and once he goes down it looks like he grabs his lower leg almost immediately

The only threat to Martin's roster spot would be Bonner (of those currently on the team). I can't imagine dumping a return man and slot WR to have a 5th X or Y receiver with limited speed, agility, and special team's skills.

Martin being cut isn't going to happen. That's just silly talk imo. He's had a good camp - granted his game wasn't good the other day but unless he just completely tanks in all 4 games, I think I have a better chance of replacing Martin than Jean does. And I might add, while both play WR they do not play the same spot nor have the same duties/assignments.

Who is the Slot if Martin goes? Jean? Hardly? Posey? Maybe I could buy it but Martin physically is ideally suited. He just needs to do it consistently. That's not too mention his return ability. Sometimes young WR's need a couple of years to grow. It's way, WAY too early to give up on Martin.

I put this under the heading of fantasy land. Carry on. :kubepalm:

:kubepalm: This offense has never had to rely on a "slot WR", because we don't pigeon hole our receivers as X and Y or even pigeon hole them to the slot.. We move our receivers around all over the field and we use our TEs mostly in the middle. Think about who we had before Martin (who didn't play that great last year and who looks scared to catch passes in traffic).. where's all these slot receivers our offense relied on?

I also don't care about camp, It was reported he was having a good camp last year as well and then the lights came on and real bullets started flying.. sorry, but so far he has been J.A.G

Bonner still hurt. I don't know.

Jean still up and down.

Lemon had a rough day today.

Interestingly, Cruse had probably his best day today.

The team has searched for one and struggled offensively at times because it was lacking. We thought the position important enough to keep (and utilize) David Anderson for 2-3 years.

I think what he means as we have never even attempted to use slot WRs like the patriots our even ravens do. Our offense is more about WR spreading the field at deep to medium range with the TEs doing most of the middle field stuff. I mean look they moved woodhead to slot in NE last year and watch him against us, that is how you use a slot WR. Us ummm not so much.

Martin has had a very good camp.

Like much better than anyone not named Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins.

You didn't see it in the last preseason game, but he's had a very good camp. Need to make that translate into game situations.

Also, something that makes it hard to evaluate WRs, is that for many teams, the drop off between their 1 & 2 CBs and their other CBs is fairly steep. So some of the highlight reel stuff you were hearing from camp wasn't against the best CBs.

Hopkins has had to work really hard in camp. He gets some great catches, but has to work because it is either JJo or KJ for many reps.
