Ed Reed agrees to terms with Texans

Who says this FO doesn't do shyte in the offseason? :D
I don't think this takes safety off our draft board. Now you draft a safety to learn from Ed Reed, and in two years you'll have a strong backfield.

I am very happy if this is true. We need a veteran WR damn it. Drafting a rookie will not give us the immediate impact we need now.

Mike Freeman likes it:

know there are people who think safety Ed Reed is done. They think he's slowed. They think he's hanging on to make cash and pad his legacy. There are those who believe all of that. I am not one of them.

Houston won the Reed derby and they won it big time. I know in texting with one Baltimore Ravens official there is genuine sadness that he's gone. The feeling in that organization is that Reed is still highly effective and now the Texans have him.

Houston desperately needed someone like Reed on that defense. Almost every time I've seen that secondary in a big spot, against a good quarterback, it gets absolutely torched. Tom Brady destroys a lot of secondaries, but what he did last season against Houston is considered a misdemeanor in 15 states.

Congratulations to the Texans for signing Reed.

I remember when we signed Jonathan Joesph and Daneal Manning. That was supposed to get us to the AFC Title Game, or to the Super Bowl. Instead, we have continued to fall short because we of weakness at WR and QB.

That hasn't changed.

Urlacher is slower than Bradie James at this point. Don't want Urlacher anywhere close to this tea.

thats debateable Urlacher took one to the house this year and still shows flashes, but Im not calling on him to cover Gronkowski, we were weak as hell up the middle last year, and Im comfortable saying Urlacher plays the inside run much better than either James or Ruud. Im assuming that Manning is going to be in the box much more (which i feel is a role he will thrive in) i think between he and Cush (assuming he's back to form) that you can cover up Urlacher's deficiencies. He's probably going to go to an inter division rival, but at this time next year I wouldnt be surprised to see him near 100 combined tackles for whoever he plays for.

i disagree, a 1st round WR is actually a good bet. Youthful legs to stretch out a defense and allow Dre to work the middle. We didnt have that deep threat at all last year (i was counting on Jean, but he was underwhelming) a veteran WR with speed will cost too much for this team.

So what QB are the Texans gonna sign in FA or Draft that is better than MS?

Is next Sunday the first game of the '13 season? Last I checked free agency and the draft is still to come.

Waaaa waaaaaa Debbie Downer.

Good news that we got him, but I won't be jumping for joy until I see the structure of the deal. If its 4m a year as has been speculated, then ill be very happy :)

Do we have any reliable source with the value/length/guarantees/etc. on the contract yet?

I'm excited that Reed will be coming here, and hope he's not washed up (sure doesn't seem like he is). I just hope they didn't massively overpay him and that the contract is set so that he can be cut without much penalty if it turns out he is washed up after all.

Too much money for a brand name. I think this signing makes us more comfortable with safety then we should be hurting us even more in the draft. Somewhere there's a big sharpee that's been used for the name reed. We still need a safety in the top 4 rounds or so. He's a bandaide.

Nobody is saying he is going to be here for ten years!!!!! This defense lacked veteran leadership last year. Someone to calm their asses down when playing the big games in January. Reed is a leader and his experience in those big games will go further than you think. Of course we are going to draft a safety in one of the premium rounds. And that individual will learn under one of if not the greatest safety to ever play the game. His knowledge of the game is priceless.

Now we need to draft a safety in rounds 3, 4, or 5 to develop while Reed is starting. There would be no better mentor than a future HOFer and one of the best ever to play his position.

OK Debbie, who suggested that they were going to sign another QB? Not I.

Pending the contract details I just want to say I am proud of this front office for going out and signing a notable free agent. Far too often they have been criticized for not taking chances in free agency. Signing Ed Reed is a gamble that can definitely pay off for us. Kudos to the front office for going out and getting their man.

Well, whatever he's getting this year, 4 mil or 6, I bet it's structured so that Smith can ****can him next season if he wants to with minimum cap hit.

I'm not jumping for joy over it. 35 years old, passed his prime, draws a lot of penalties, and misses a lot of tackles. On second thought, he should fit right in.

Just read about the news. I guess I'm glad Ed Reed is here? I wonder what he's being paid and if it's worth it.

It sure seems like a whole lot of hullabaloo for him when he might not even be a true contributing member. I'm just unsure.

:spin:

Urlacher/Cushing? No?

No....

Urlacher - 34 y/o
Cushing - 26 y/o

and basically play the same position.

Why overpay for a better Brady James. Why not move Brooks Reed to the inside and buid the interior through the draft?

KEEP IT YOUNG... Well as young as the salary cap will allow you.

Ed Reed? Cool.

All this talk about really, really, really needing to draft a safety to learn under Reed, though? Sure, I'd pick one up somewhere in the later rounds, but y'all are forgetting about this cat we have named...

Eddie Pleasant.

A high IQ guy who finds himself around the ball a lot. Believe that.

No but you moan and groan about the production of the QB and #2 WR and what is your answer to solve em?

Draft? FA? Cause that's the only way to solve your conundrum.

The Texans just shured up the D and all you can do is pizz and moan and beat the he777 out o that dead horse and have no tangible solution.

Cooper Taylor in rd 3-4.

Now is the time to bring Casey Hampton home. Then draft a young LB like Brown in rd 2 and this defense would be a championship caliber defense.

Ed is a solid signing period. Now lets get the punter and lets get the special teams and lets get this football team where it belongs

I forgot about him! You sho right!

YES!!!

Finally a great addition for this years superbowl run and a big statement for the franchise for years.

Glad to have you in Houston Ed!

Ravens fan checking in. Congrats on signing the GOAT at the position. No, he's definitely not the Ed Reed of 2004, but he can still cover and freelance like no one else. He might have enough left in the tank to do for you guys what Rod Woodson did for us back in '00. I am sure going to miss screaming "REEEEEED!!!" at the top of my lungs on Sundays at M&T. You got a good one, folks!

Congratulations on getting Ed- I wished he would end his career in Purple but he saw something else on his visit or in the contract ($$$).

Hope it works out well for both parties.

Welcome to The U of Moo baby! If only we can convince Reggie Wayne to ask for a trade we are set!

Thanks a lot. It's nice to hear from a fan from an opposing team, especially the Super Bowl champs. I have a feeling we're going to be seeing a lot of youse guys for a little while to come.

Drop by anytime.

Shut yer pie-hole. go find a Ravens board ya frig'n troll.

Uh, I mean thank you.

As soon as 2 days ago I mentioned that I still thought he would sign here. Didn't think he would put AJ if he wasn't serious about coming. Glad he'll be sporting our uniform this upcoming season.

While Lechler is the arguably the second best punter in history, he would cost more than Donnie Jones (or whoever) who had a really good season. Think about the future. Think about the salary cap...

That said.... "Gig 'em"! Go Shane Lechler!!!

*****************

As an aside Joe, when are you going to hook-up another sprinkler system, identical to what you did at my old place?

Marc Berman : deal not done but national services saying Reed's financial adviser all done but minor things. Also Texans negotiating with punter Shane Lechler.

All I did was make an observation. I don't have a solution. But it's about time that the Texans hire someone in the front office who does.

I thought for sure he'd resign with Baltimore. I only hope he's still got something left in the tank and Rick smith didn't just go Ahman green 2.0 on us.

I think all the talk about drafting a safety is well warranted. This is actually a very rich safety draft. Why not invest in a safety in th3 third or fourth round???

I'm pretty sure that Pleasant won't be around, but they're will be a bunch around, no?

(If I misunderstood your post, please feel free to share)

Wouldn't hurt to get another one to replace Keo, but Eddie Pleasant is on our PS I believe

love it. we needed 2 positions on defense IMO - a cover linebacker to pair with cushing, and a centerfielder. reed is that centerfielder. jjo, kareem, and mccain are all man to man corners very fitting for our defense, and manning is better closer to the box ... reed is exactly what we needed roaming over the top and would very much change games like against the pats and packers (our biggest weakness).

question - who are some of the notable safeties to play under wade phillips?

Where is everybody getting the idea that Reed is going to be effective roaming over the top? He was an OLB, and apparently they're converting him. Why? Has he done anything to suggest he knows what he's doing? This is a completely different role and people are just assuming he's going to flourish.

I'm not trying to argue. I legitimately want to know. Did Reed cover a lot more in college?

I'm sure we're talking about Ed Reed roaming the deep middle.

You're thinking Brooks Reed moving to ILB.
