Quarter season 2013 mock

badboy

Hall of Fame
1. Nose Jesse Williams Alabama 6'3" 320
2. OLB/DE Dion Jordan Oregon 6'7" 243
3a. S/CB Micah Hyde Iowa 6'1" 190
3b OG Alvin Bailey 6'5" Arkansas 315
4. WR Marcus Davis Virginia Tech 6'4" 232 4.3 43 inch vertical
5a TE Jake Stoneburner Ohio State 6'5" 245 4.49
5b ILB Andrew Jackson Western Kentucky 6'1" 265 109 T (17 for loss)3.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 INT
6. SS Ray Ray Armstrong 6'4" 220 4.59

OK, my opinion.

1. Williams, I love this pick. Williams, Kawaan Short, or even Sylvester Williams. A better NT lessens our need at ILB, stuffs the run up the middle, and adds pressure to the QB by occasionally collapsing the pocket. Great pick.
2. Jordan, I don't know anything about him since I haven't been investigating OLB/DE as a team need. I just don't see the need.
3. Hyde, nice pick, I've got him in my latest mock as well in the 4th round. I'm thinking he's more of a Safety than CB, thus I think he falls a little.
3b. Bailey, I like the player and quality O-line depth is always a good thing. Do you think he's got the speed/quickness to play in our system? Interesting that you favor an OG more than an OT.
4. Davis, I don't know anything about him but the size and speed are perfect. Why does someone with his size and speed fall to the 4th? Does he have the athleticism, routes, and hands?
5. Stoneburner, I see the need at TE but don't like next years TE class much. Because of his contract I think OD stays at least one more year and I think we can re-sign Casey cheap = no need.
5b. Jackson, I like the pick and in the proper round with good size for the position. Great pick.
6. Armstrong, I don't like this pick. He needs to add 20 lbs. and play ILB/MLB. Lacks coverage skills and in our system coverage is more important than a hard hitter.
7. BPA, maybe a FB, P, or an extra WR.

1. Cody has surprised me at how well he has done, Mitchell not so much. It's possible Cody could return but I'd still draft Nose & move Mitchell behind Smith. Have not seen much of Short and Sylvester has not looked good recently. Saw a comment where he was not playing 100%.

2. Well if Barwin is gone either as FA or we don't want him back..he has not done much to win my heart. OLB don't get big bucks for getting close to QB after ball is gone or he is tackled by someone else. Has Mercilus actually impressed anyone? I have not seen a decent OLB at our pick in 3rd or after.

3. Bailey is what held up this mock for two weeks. lol He has good reviews from last year but every time I watch him I keep waiting for him to convince me. I have not seen him over power one play. He is effective in getting in the way but seems, IDK, not interested? He is rated as #2 OG in 2014 by CBS. I watched OTs that might become OGs and OGs last two weeks and none with Bailey's skill set caught my eye. At first, I kept going back to Matthew or Barrett Jones dropping in first but I see neither falling that far. Also, I could not then find a Nose that would be there in third. I like Wisconsin's Rick Wagner but I think he will climb high in second so Texans cannot get him. If Jonathan Cooper OG N. Carolina is there in 2nd, I look hard at taking him. I think Newton & Harris have RT sewn up.

4. Davis is 19/375 19.7 avg and 1 TD. Against Cincinatti he was 5/101 20.1 QB Logan spreads ball to Davis, Corey Fuller & Dyrell Roberts. 6'2" for last two guys. Davis was a QB before coming to Tech and has played at half back. At Kansas he ran track- triple jump. His average per catch has been consistent & caught my attention + 4.37 at his size? I'd sit him behind AJ and say do what he says. I think even if our current Jean, Martin and Posey work out, I'd take Davis.

5. Keep in mind Gary's penchant for drafting TEs. Daniels signed $22m with $6m cap hit next two seasons. He can be cut with only $2m salary bonus hitting cap '13. He turns 30 Nov 9th. I wonder if Smith could use $6m for say Casey & Quin?
Stoneburner is 7/92 with 3 TDs (can you say Dreesen?)

6. I hope 31 other teams agree with you. Yes there is a good chance Armstrong could be another Vontaze Burfict who fell out of draft & is now starting for Bengals. Might remember another Texan who had some concerns that dropped him out of draft but just re-signed by name of Arian Foster. Heck, anyway he is worth risk & I think he would do enough in coverage.

1. I just reread my post and didn't mean to imply Sylvester in the 1st. I read as well that he's not having a good year, he'd be a 2nd or 3rd round pick based on potential. He's got the size and athleticism to be good at DT in the NFL but I think he's lacking some motivation, or a kick in the ass, this year. Different coaching and teammates, I think he'd be just fine as a Texan.

2. Barwin hasn't put up the stats but we all know what he's capable of and this years lack of stats should make the price to re-sign him a little lower and maybe a few teams less interested. I think Barwin is back next year.

3. Matthew might fall to us in the 1st but I doubt Kubiak spends a 1st on a RT. I think Wagner could be had at our pick in the 2nd. He's a slow RT that would probably be a stud OG. I haven't looked hard at Cooper yet. I like Newton but just think he's in over his head right now. He might get better but I don't want a guy that's marginal at RT and looking over his shoulder to see who replaces him, I want a stud RT that owns the position for year to come. I think Thomas could be that guy as a 2nd round pick.

4. I agree with need at WR no matter how good Posey, Jean, and Martin do this year. None of them is a #2 WR with potential to be a future #1. I think WR is a pick of opportunity, if a really good one is there when we pick I wouldn't be surprised to see him taken in any round.

5. OD is having a very good year and as long as we owe him money it makes no sense to cut him and I don't think McNair likes paying dead money. OD will be back next year lessening our need for a TE, and Casey should be a cheap re-sign.

6. I see Armstrong as nothing more than a special teams player for us. Wade wants safeties with cover skills. Also with Armstrong's off the field issues I don't see the Texans being that interested. Now if they look the other way on his off field issues and want to put him on the PS, put weight on him and move him to ILB, I've got no problem with the pick. Very low risk in the 6th.

I'm yet to be sold on any of the NT prospects this draft, when/where Texans select. The prospects with elite size/speed combos tend to get overdrafted based on potential, I would like to shy away from those instead focus on this years Mike Martin.

Have to agree with Wolf6151 in regards to Barwin comments making another OLB highly doubtful, but Jordan is talented pick.

Micah Hyde woiuld be Glover Quinn's back-up. Like player but not looking for depth this early.

Alvin Bailey is the top ranked underclassman OG if he is still there, heck yeah that would be stealing 1st rd. talent from next years crop.

I was hoping you would take WR earlier, like my guy Marquess Wilson, WSU. But doubt Marcus Davis is here this late either, both will probably be 2nd rd. picks which is where Texans may address position of need.

Stoneburner would be a good pick this late, maybe? I really want Alabama TE Michael Williams for his blocking on the line to shade either Tackle. If there is a weakness on this current offensive team its a pure blocking TE. I think it's even possible with Williams size he could become a back-up LT in emergency situations which adds value to his stock (3rd rd.).

Intriguing prospect with ILB Andrew Jackson, great size for position. Haven't watched him on film so will take your word, if he can come into camp & compete at minimum displace Mister Alexander then I'm sold.

Not fan of Armstrong. Any idea where the Honey Badger goes?

With last pick this year I'm going with an undersized LB who could flip inside in coverage & speed packages, a football player with nose for the football, like Oregon LB Michael Clay. Follow in the steps of fellow Duck Eddie Pleasant who should have got the call up when Demps went down IMO.

:)

Don't disagree with much if any you say. It's possible that Cody may re-sign but I'm doubtful. If he is gone, NT is our #1 priority. My guy is only one that can possibly start day one. I really tried to get someone later but just don't see Mitchell starting while we develop new guy, nose has to start. You & Wolfe need to convince me why Barwin will return. He is going to have to step up big time for me to want to give him even a team friendly deal.

Hyde is back up ONLY if Quin is re-signed & I think you have posted you would not be surprised to see him seek $ elsewhere? Plus he can play two spots. I agree Marquess Wilson looked very good last game and if Barwin was playing better and we knew he would be re-signed, I'd definitely consider him in second but probably not there. * Another guy I am watching is Tennesse's Cordarrelle Patterson 6'3" 205 4.4 just think he may stay for senior year.

Huge blocking TEs (OTs) have not really worked well in our past. IMO, in our ZBS we do not need a TE blocking on line unless picking up blitz. I want them blocking downfield or offering an option to Schaub. Stoneburner is a better blocker than Fleener was and has as good hands.

Thanks for feedback

If I knew I could get Dion Jordan in third, I'd look strong at Wagner in second but he really needs to show me something with his feet & balance even for RG. ZBS guys have to have good lateral movements and minimal mental issues. I am really concerned the Wisconsin and Arkansas players are going to tumble.

I think I'd rather gamble on Bailey rather than Wagner at least for now.

To clarify on OD if he is cut no salary impacts the cap. His cap hit for 13 &14 combined is $3m & would be accelerated to count against '13 cap. Team saves all salary for those two seasons. Dead $ is $1.5m in '13 & '14 and is insignificant.

Who is this years Mike Martin?

I was really hoping the Texans would take Martin this past draft, and they had their chances, but I guess DT/NT wasn't a top priority. The tacks have him now and he's listed as a backup DT. Don't remember seeing him in the game this past Sunday but I didn't get to see the 1st half. Did he play any?

Anyway, we will be needing a good NT to replace Cody someday soon. He's going to be 30 and in his 10th year next year. Mitchell beefed up to 300 lbs this season and is doing OK, but I still think we need some depth. Just don't know who is out there yet.

Sorry I am a little late here badboy, had a couple busy days on campus.

1) I like going NT. While it is not a hole- how many real holes does this team have?- NT could stand to be upgraded. Williams is a proven player in the SEC, and should be a solid starter for years. I dont see him being an impact player though. That is not a bad thing, but just something to keep in mind.

2) I also like grabbing an edge rusher. However, I worry about Jordan's length in converting to OLB. 6'7" is a lot of length, and I dont think he has the elite athleticism to help him overcome it. I think he will look awkward in the NFL coming off the edge. I would not hate the pick, but it would make me nervous.

3) Hyde is a great pick. No complaints.

3) I dont know a lot about Bailey, but Arkansas has looked like crap in the very little that I have seen. Furthermore, I would think that an OT would be taken before an OG, since we have Jones and Brooks waiting in the wings.

4) Davis is a good pick as well. Athletic as hell.

5) Stoneburner is definitely a Hernandez type TE. He wont ever be an overpowering blocker, but he will stretch the seams with the best of them.

5) I really, really like Jackson. Again, I worry that he wont declare this year. As a smaller school prospect, leaving school early if you are not a top couple round lock is gutsy.

6) As much as I like Jackson, I dislike Armstrong. It is only a 6th, but I dont think he has a place on the team, especially at SS. However, if, as wolf suggested, he adds 10-20 lbs and moves to ILB, then he could be interesting as a ST and package player. He has a lot of talent.

7) BPA is always good.

Nice work! I would be happy with this draft.

I'm not sure about the players right now so I'll just speak about the positions.

I like the nt pick. I think a player at that position could come in and compete for playing time right away.

I don't care what anyone says, cody is average to below average. earl is a good rotational player but hasn't shown to be starting material. If we could add a true force at the position this defense becomes even scarier. Would help keep the ilb's clean and would help is against the run.

Olb, I like the role Brooks reed is in. I don't think we have a great pass rushing lb in rotation right now. I don't like barwin, and I am not a fan of merciless and have disliked that pick from the word go.

I really wanted Bruce Irvin in the last draft but he had character issues and he went way before we picked. If we can add a true pass rushing threat on the outside this defense becomes even better.

If we were to hit on those first two picks the texans could be looking at trying to create a long sustained run at success.

Again, I like the safety cb pick.

Your first three picks address areas that I think could stand to be stronger.

Now here's where it gets iffy for me. Wr. Don't need, don't want. No room. Much too early. Even if you cut kw (who has played well so far) you still have a bunch if young guys that are capable. Pick up some udfa wr's or take a late round flyer on a guy.

TE. I'm ok with it there. Not thrilled with it, but I'm ok with it. Would much rather have an OT here though.

ILB needs to be taken higher. I'd argue that we can afford to take a guy there as high as the first or second round depending on their versatility. Buy I'd definitely look to take an ilb somewhere in the first 4 rounds.

6th and 7th....whatever...just take guys you like and you like the guys you selected so...

Here is som good info on Dion Jordan from 2007 where he was a WR. Interesting read that might answer some of your concerns. http://hsarizona.scout.com/2/642743.html
At 6'6 220 pounds and running sub 4.6 in the forty, Jordan has the ability to play a variety of positions at the next level. He plays mainly wideout for the Wolves and he shows great hands. He is willing to go across the middle and make tough grabs and is a receiver that catches with his hands rather then with his body. He can create serious matchup problems with his height at the next level.

Jordan's frame is such that he could easily hold another 30 pounds and make the move to tightend. He shows a rare trait among high school wide receivers and that is the ability and willingness to block. He uses his body to not only shield defenders but he will put a DB on their backside. Some may question is ability to block at the next level

Another little known bit of info: http://www.azcentral.com/sports/col...n-dion-jordan-new-perspective-oregon-bcs.html

One of the cars at the house ran out of gas and Jordan watched as his friends tried to siphon some from another car using a vacuum cleaner.

They stopped for a while but left the vacuum on and walked out of the garage. Jordon looked over. Someone should turn that off, he thought.

He walked into the garage, alone, and flipped the vacuum's "off" switch. It released a spark, which triggered a flash fire that leaped onto Jordan.

Football Outsiders show that Martin played 35 defensive snaps in the first game of the season, and ZERO since.

He also played 14 ST snaps in that game.
He totaled 14 ST snaps in the last 3 games (just 3 against the Texans.)

Enjoyed your post. Here are my thoughts: Our WRs strengths depend on whom you ask. Beerlover for example wants one in second & you 5th or later. I tend to agree with BL as we have little to evaluate anyone other than AJ. Walter has 9 for 131 & one TD in four games. Not good enough for a WR2 imo. He turns 32 August 2013 & is owed $7 m for '13 & '14. Martin has 4 catches @ 9.8 whoopie. Jean or Posey better come strong in '13 or your late round WR better be gold.

ILB? Who? Te'o solid but gone in first. Skov? If you watch him you'd say, nuh uh, no thanks! Nico Johnson? Find some 2012 info on him, I can't. 18 tackles for ILB, Te'o has 36. Would I like a ILB earlier? Sure but ain't one. I'm hoping James improves & re-signs cheap. He looked better against Tenn but he should have.

Martin has had a foot injury and I think you will agree would look better playing with Texans starting D than Titans?

The thing about this year is that 1) OD is balling 2) we've had big leads in EVERY game we've played and the one game that was close we were still running trying to burn the clock. I don't think it's fair at all to look at the WR's numbers and say they aren't doing enough.

JMO, but that's too early for WR as I don't think there is any room for one unless you think Walter will be cut. And even then I think between Jean, Posey and Martin we'd be perfectly fine there.

ILB?

At this point last year Bruce Irvin was considered a 4th or 5th roung pick...Even later on some draft boards...

There is going to be a lot of movement in regards to where players are valued. Don't act so matter of fact about where players are currently projected. Some guys will rise. Others will fall.

I agree with Rey that it's too early to talk about drafting a receiver; however, if Marcus Davis is there in the fourth, I think we will have to take him.

AJ 16 for 268 17 avg 2TDs or 67 yds per game x 12=804more + 268= 1,072 for season. I think most will agree these stats will improve but I like way Schaub is utilyzing AJ.

I think Dion Jordan is going to rise like crazy...

I hope we'd be able to get him towards the end of the first round, but I think he's going to jump up draft boards...

A 6'6", well built, fluid pass rusher with good burst of the snap capable of standing up or putting his hand in the dirt....

I need to watch him play more, but I'd take him at the end of the first round and not look back..

I don't have a problem with how he is using any of the WR's. We run the ball a lot.

Don't disagree as I've quickly moved him up from 3rd to 2nd. I am hoping other Nose players will step up and allow me to shift from first round to second if Jordan continues to rise as season progresses.

That guy sure looks good, doesn't he?
But I'm not sure he'll jump.
From what I read, he already put on some more weight this year and still is in the low 240s.
Don't know how he's going to hold up against the OTs in the NFL on the run.

Wolf, there are cut ups of 4 or 5 games from last year on youtube.
They don't take very long to watch.

Thanks for the link 76Texan. Dion looks like he's got really good speed and athleticism, but he also looks raw and could use another year to fill out his frame. It seems he's got a good speed rush but no moves. I hadn't looked at him since I don't consider OLB as a position of need for us next year.

You do realize this is Cody's last contract year?

To me it doesn't matter whether he stays or goes, we still need another NT. If for nothing else than more depth. And Fangupo, or any other UDFA, is not the answer IMO. So, I do agree with you that NT should be high on the draft priority list. How high will the Texans be looking? I don't know. But, if there is another Mike Martin type available in the mid rounds I hope they don't pass him by like they did last draft.

Also, y'all are pretty confident the Texans will get another 3rd round pick, I assume for losing Mario in FA. But, isn't that contingent on how he plays as part of the FA compensation formula?

He is playing at DE but has OLB written all over him.

I think if Cody re-signs we will not draft a Nose before 5th. Wade would then draft ILB high to shut down run. I too would like to have a Martin type nose.

I am not the expert on comp picks but sounds logical that Mario's play could make difference. He does have wrist injury.
I think main focus on comp picks is what you gave up in FA status versus what you get. Mario > Alan Ball/ Ryan Harris. I also think round the player was originally drafted in plays a part.

Maybe you get yourself confused after watching so many players? :texanbill:
He's playing everywhere, like Rey said, with hand on the dirt or without.
Also, he lined up outside, off the line to defend the pass quite a bit.
He's a versatile player, even more than Cushing (when he was at USC.)

I think there's very little chance that Cody is re-signed. With Brown and Schaub in new contracts and Barwin needing to be re-signed, that money will have to come from somewhere and a 1st round pick is cheaper and usually better than a vet. FA.
I don't know all the rules of comp. picks but I think we signed Ball and Harris for vet. minimum and that won't count against us when considering comp. picks. Also Mario's huge contract should guarantee us a 3rd round comp.. I just hope we get that 5th for Brisiel.

I am going to piggy back onto this thread. Boredom on a Saturday night leads to another Mock. I will not use a pick number due to the fact that I am adding in estimated supplemental picks. (3rd for Mario, 5th for Brisiel, and a 7th for Allen).

1st Alex Okafor DE Texas Sr 6-5 265
2nd Shayne Skov ILB Stanford Sr 6-3 242 This is a more realistic place for him
3rd Bacarri Rambo FS Georgia rSr 6-0 210
3 Sup Desmond Trufant CB Washington Sr 6-0 186
4th Joseph Randle RB Oklahoma State Jr 6-0 200
5th Anthony Rashad White DT Michigan State Sr 6-2 330
5 Sup Jonathan Bostic ILB Florida Sr 6-1 246
6th Xavier Nixon OT Florida Sr 6-5 314
7th Lucas Reed TE New Mexico rSr 6-5 250
7 sup Ryan Allen P Louisiana Tech rSr 6-2 215

Very few of these guys are going to have roster spots. This team is young and deep, so any pick after the 3rd or 4th rounds will have to play very well in order to get a roster spot.

If Barwin continues to play with no sacks, he could be in for a low ball offer and possibly be allowed to walk. Thus my 1st pick. We need ILB help and depth. With Rambo's suspension due to a failed drug test, would the Texans look at him, a lot of weight would have to be given to the interview and college coaches reviews of him. They did give Braman and Posey chances. Trufant is a solid pick in the late 3rd. And if a back like Randle is available in the 4th you jump up to hand in your card on draft day. The guys after that are just filling up training camp spots on this team.

I'm going to look at some of those clips when I get a chance, but so far I like what I've seen from him. Good looking athlete.

Football Outsiders show that Martin played 35 defensive snaps in the first game of the season, and ZERO since.

He also played 14 ST snaps in that game.
He totaled 14 ST snaps in the last 3 games (just 3 against the Texans.)

I've been rewatching the game (I do this pretty much every day) and notice that it was Martin that Ben Jones held (and got called for a penalty) on the play that AJ beat the CB deep with a double move.
He was wide open and could have had an easy TD, but Schaub had to throw the ball early and overshot him by a mile.

The drive stalled at the Titans 36 and we had to punt.

It goes to show that these "professional sites" can, and do make mistake from time to time.
