I agree. The draft is an inexact science, so I hope like hell I'm wrong, and hey, these guys get paid to do this, so it's likely that I am wrong. But right now, I sure as hell don't feel good about what we've done. And I don't like that Gerhart trade-down now at all. Tate was my 2nd choice, but with Gerhart right there, they essentially traded down for a few third day guys. Yay team.

By moving back 7 spots in the 2nd rd, resulting an extra pick in the early 4th and improving TJ's 5th rd deal to 13th in the 5th rd. Not bad.

They had Tate rated above Gerhart. They only had Spiller and Mathews higher. I think Tate turns into the better pro, especially in this offense. Minnesota is better suited to Gerhart. It's like women. If you get the blond, Herv gets the red head, and I take the brunett, then we are all happy. 
I didn't care for the Mitchell pick BUT I have to say it's mainly because it was a Who? type pick. However, I'm just a guy who watches a game here or there, picks up a draft magazine and follows what the so-called experts say. In other words, compared to Smithiak I know Jack diddly squat. I'm smart enough to recognize that perhaps that Smithiak might just be smarter than some guy with an internet site that probably is just mimicking what some pimply faced teenager with a DVR said.
All in all, loved round 1 and 2, liked all of the trades made, but in a wait and see mode on Mitchell. Until he plays, nobody knows so quit acting like you're the smartest guy in the room.

I have no problems with passing on Wilson and Gerhardt, none at all.
As for the DT, as sad it may sound we still need something at the spot. Another athlete added to the D-line has to be a good thing.
My biggest concern is with the lack of anymore talent added to the O-line, but maybe in the fourth.
And this draft may only have 3 rounds worth of talent, but that does not mean that all rounds worth of talent has been drafted yet.
Comparing this draft to the 05 draft reeks of knee-jerk. The 05 draft has been acknowledged as one of the worst draft pools in recent memory.

Rather have Tate's speed in the 2nd than Gerhart supposed power. I heard, early in "draft season" he isn't very good at catching out of the backfield. That's crucial in our offense.

Nah, I don't care about the names. First, it feels like they don't have a good feel for the draft board. They're trading because they don't have anyone they really value that high. It feels like Charley Casserley riverboat gambling. Second, we didn't get a rangy, ball-hawking secondary guy. We got a press corner that is good in coverage but doesn't really have a knack for taking the ball away. We passed on Gerhart, ok fine, but traded down then back up? That tells me they didn't have a good feel for the draft board. They essentially traded down 7 spots to pick up a 4th rounder, after the subsequent trades pan out. Finally, we didn't go after a space eating, multiple block taking, run stuffing big guy. We took another pass rushing DT.
Now, they might know what they want (maybe, given the trades), and it's obviously different from what I think they ought to do. OK, what the hell do I know, right? So the draft is a crap shoot anyway, and I'm probably wrong.
But I don't have a good feeling about it right now, and it's not because of the "big names" or lack thereof. It's their style.
True. Remember though, not to long ago, we drafted a CB in the 4th that no one knew at all. A CB prospect that was ranked mid-teens for overall CB in many analyst's ranking of prospects. That unknown player from New Mexico turned out to be a pretty good player for us so far.

Good stuff. Our mock drafts showed that there were still good players in the 4th and 5th rounds. Now lets go get them!

with the way the draft is structured this year, early 4th round is almost more valuable than late 3rd given the extra day teams have to consider who got overlooked. the fact they threw in other picks just cements it. if the texans really had nobody definite in their sights then this is a very good move.

Maybe a fair argument, but Gerhart ran a 4.5 flat, and Tate ran a 4.what? 4.48, I believe?
Again, Tate was my 2nd choice, and in a vacuum, I like Tate.

Woohoo! Good. Sincerely. But if I want a fast guy, I already have Slaton. I wanted a guy that grind the yards when the other team knows we're going to grind yards. Tate might be able to do that - you don't have to be 6"1" and 231 to do that. Again, I like Tate.
Yes - that was one of the players I was looking at. I hope the Texans really didn't have anyone they particularly liked at this point. Overall, I don't think this is a year we have that many holes to fill. In other words, I'd rather make sure I get the player I want at the end of the third, than get some extra player in the 5th. If they really didn't have someone they wanted, then that's OK, I guess, but I sure hope they weren't gambling that their favorite would last...
I think that what 5th rounders brought in trades earlier just makes the 4th much more valuable
Actually we got a pretty early 4th rounder and basically moved up 6 spots in the 5th...
And although most guys on here want a big ugly NT, it really seems like the FO doesnt. And when you look at our run defense last year, it was actually alright after the first weeks. But we just couldn`t get any pressure on the QB from the inside. So a pass rushing DT does make sense, and he seems to have a lot of upside - although he seems to still have a lot to learn.
I´m fine with this draft so far. We picked up an extra pick, we drafted 3 guys on 3 need positions, and it seems like 1 of them will start day 1, the other one will split duties at HB, and the 3d will rotate in and out at DT. So that should make us a better football team.
Now let`s get a G or C next (perhaps Tennant?), and then grab Myron Rolle and I´d be ecstatic.

And that's pretty much where the fan critique on the draft diverges. The DT pick is just a microcosm of that fan sentiment on a number of positions. Some people want a power back to complement Slaton, some don't. Some want a run stuffer at DT, some want pass rush. Some want a rangy ball-hawking guy in the secondary, others don't. Some want a strong base guy at Center, others want a nimble ZBS guy. Etc., etc., etc. It has nothing to do with name for me. I just don't buy their style of game yet. Now if they win in the playoffs, they'll win me over. Until then, I see holes that can be filled with a different philosophy than the team seems to have.

as other have said the net gain of their trades is a 3rd rounder and still got the guy they wanted. how can that be a negative?
and they dont really do big NT's with kollar around. we got smaller last year and had a decent run defence when they settled down

We all have our opinions but we all mock this stuff out and read the analysis and some of us look at tape and highlights and whatever. But. Ultimately, that's all just mental masturbation. It's fun but kinda pointless.
The "real" boards do not synch up with ours. Just because I hadn't heard about Earl Mitchell... so what? I hadn't heard about Corey Peters and the Falcons took him a couple of picks after we took Mitchell. The professionals have different boards than we do.
In our mock we had Everson Griffen going 16th and Bruce Campbell has been a 1st round pick in just about every mock I've looked at. For these guys dropping past the 3rd doesn't mean that the professionals are stupid. It means that the amateurs are amateurs.
I had Tate above Gerhart. I expected Tate to go in the 2nd round and Gerhart to go in the 3rd. I would have been fine with Gerhart but if we had picked him, I would have felt that we reached for him. (And obviously, it wouldn't have been, but I would have felt like it was.)
So, to get ticked off at our FO because their picks are different than ours, like they've got entirely different grades on the players than WalterFootball or NFL Draft Scout, isn't something to get ticked off about. It's something that you should expect.

Too bad bench press reps mean next to nothing for RBs. I'd rather see tree trunk legs.
Again, I like Tate. I think y'all are missing that. I just don't like the trade down in conjunction with passing on Gerhart. But if they were going to pass on Gerhart, Tate is the guy I wanted. I think he'll be very good in our system.

So far it's been a solid but unspectacular draft. With the picks we made yesterday and today, the Texans are a more physical team then they were. Physicality and toughness are the attributes the Texans are paying more attention to this year, look for those players with those qualities to be drafted by the Texans tomorrow. I like the Kareem Jackson pick but I think Ben Tate (and a healthy Slaton) can be our best defense against Peyton Manning and some of these offenses we will face this year. Keep the likes of Peyton off the field and our chances of winning go up higher.

We added a pass rusher. It's better than going DE again. At least now we attempted to fix the problem with our pass rush (no inside push). If we're content to have Mario run the arc instead of using more inside moves then we need a DT that can collapse the pocket or the QB will just step right up outside of Mario's grasp.
Excellent summary.
For better or worse, our defensive philosophy is more speed oriented than power oriented. So our DL picks are more likely to be smaller, quick-off-the-ball guys than immovable object road-graders. And honestly, the only guys, in this draft, who could do both went #2 and #3 overall.
