left Reliant for the last time today,,,as of midnight tonight he is no longer a Houston Texan. He stopped by the shop this evening with his trunk full of "8 years of stuff",,,even though the FO has been telling him this whole time that they'd give him a deal,,,,,"we'll take care of you",,,,"we want you back",,,"we're not going to let you go",,,"we don't want you in another uniform" don't ya think that they'd at least make an effort to say some kind or reassuring words to him as he left the stadium today? Hell no,,,he told alot of the people that he would deal with day to day good bye but he said the "powers to be" had nothing to say to him or made no effort to tell him a simple "Thanks",,,

He's been cleared from his injury and will miss no time at camp. He's rehabbed harder and more dedicated than anyone that has been injured like this before and according to him "Tomorrow morning when I wake up,,,,I'll no longer be a Houston Texan",,,you know it has to be a pretty sinking feeling for him after being one of the faces of the franchise since its inception and a corner stone in the locker room.
 
Thank you Chester for all that you have done for this ball club, I wish you nothing but the best. Thank you for being a Texan. Truly a sad day.
 
I had a feeling he was gonna be let go, but I was hoping it wouldn't happen. I just like him as a person, and his hard work he put in while he was with this team. Good luck to him wherever he lands up. :texflag:
 
that's to bad. But, there is still a chance they could bring him back. You never know what happens. I wish him luck, he's a good guy.
 
Out of respect for not knowing how much was attempted, on the side of the Texans ownership and management, I will refrain from siding with Chester and thereby blasting the owner and Texans front office.

I will say this: Chester was probably one of the more valuable pieces of the franchise's past history. Out of all the guys on the team, he was able to hang on to the very end and be out there as a true contributor.

Offensive line has now been placed front and center, without a doubt, as maybe THE area of concentration for either free agency and/or the draft.

Will this impact the Kevin Walter situation? Rick Smith said he can't keep everybody. Well, now you lost a part of the offensive line. So if you go the route of free agency to replace Pitts, do you sacrifice Walter in order to use that money for Chester's replacement? Or does Smithiak promote a current player into Pitts' position and draft for depth behind the new starter?

Lots of maneuvering, IMO. I think we're going to have a very active free agency that'll keep things interesting from now until the draft. Just my gut feeling right now.

This is one of those "jaw droppers" for me. I haven't really been following him much this offseason, but I never thought he'd be let go. I thought he was consistent and a solid piece in our O-line. I know we need to upgrade at a lot of positions for us to get to the next level, my only concern is a huge turnover where we openly cut or lose key free agents that are big contributors. I'm having flashbacks to years past where we lost some veteran players and took a HUGE step back. I'm hoping they have something great up their sleeve and we'll all look back and say "man, that was a great move!".

Regardless, good luck Chester.....you were a great ambassador for our franchise and had a contagious smile. Hope you land on your feet somewhere and are extremely successful wherever you go.
 
I don't think anyone will want to sign him to a contract until he can pass a physical. So he may be one of those people where it takes a while before he gets a contract.
 
Its unfortunate if he didn't get a nice heartfelt goodbye from Texans staff. That's simply professional courtesy for a guy who has put it all on the line for your team and paid his dues without reaping the reward of playing for a winner his entire NFL career thus far.

But I can't blame them for not resigning a 30+ year old OL coming off of injury. It sucks for Chester but he has played his best years on what is (hopefully) Houston's worst teams.
 
Chester Pitts is a hard worker and probably the best offensive linemen we have ever had. Sad to see him go as I was hoping he would retire as a Texan.
 
The OP has solid cred, and I do not doubt one word of what he says. The contract situation is what it is, and the business of the NFL is tough sometimes. I don't hold that against them. However, there's a right way to treat people, even in departure, and it's becoming more evident all the time that the Texans FO is full of jackasses.

I'm starting to get really pissed off at the team.
 
I hope that's not true. Chester Pitts has been one of my favorites for years. He's probably the only guy besides Andre that played well on offense in 2005.
 
This doesn't sound like a franchise that has much respect for what Pitts has done. Are they ignorant of his value as an original Texan? If so, is that because they aren't sentimental? They are trying to build a winner. Are they not getting caught up in the saying goodbye because they are busy getting ready for free agency? If that's the case does that make them an organization with a killer instinct instead of a soft spot for their fan favorite players?

Are the Packers wrong for wanting to move on with Aaron Rogers?

Was resigning Deuce McAllister a sign of an organization with more heart than Houston?

Does Belichick and Mr. Kraft offer sentimental bon voyages to their players?

What is Marvin Harrison's take on this and what was his exit like in Indy?


These are not rhettorical questions... what do you guys think?
 
I see what you're aking Barrett, but I have no idea. I haven't a clue as to how other franchises handle these types of matters. However other teams choose to handle their situations, we handled ours poorly if we didn't give him a proper send off that included a meeting with the organization's top decision makers, including Mr. McNair. What would 30 mintues to say, "thank you for your dedication to our team and the years you gave us" be?

Free agent OG Chester Pitts is reportedly drawing interest from at least three teams.

In addition to the Texans, the Dolphins and Lions are also believed to be interested in the 31-year-old. Pitts underwent microfracture meniscus surgery in September, so he's going to be a risky signing this year.

but thats not to say he wont be missed. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING YOU HAVE BROUGHT TO THIS TEAM
 
Im still hoping for him to come back, I missed him last year and I'll miss him even more this year if he's not with the team.

Thats a personal reason though, and it might not reflect the business side of the whole thing, I accept that.
 
I love Chester, but, what did we expect, a parade?

I'm sure he also got a couple of nice, warm phone calls from Kubiak and/or McNair wishing him well.

Personally, I'm glad this franchise is moving more towards a hard core business approach than the sentimential, emotional approach we've always taken.
 
He'll prob. be back.

The FO is prob. taking a stand of seeing what he's offered on the market before trying to bring him back, There's no reason to overpay a lineman that was injured last season.

The Titans are doing the same thing with Keith Bulluck.
 
I remember seeing Pitts in interviews and thinking I was glad to see someone as pissed as I was when they lost. Sign him back!!

I hope that the Texans do sign Chester again and I hope he rapes them with a big contract. I must have seriously overestimated their ability to judge players if they think that Studdard is better than Chester. I will take Chester on one leg over Studdard with two any day. BOO Texans!
 
I was thinking we'd re-sign him. At least hoping. There's still a very good chance he'll be back. I, for one, want him back.

God bless Chester Pitts. He's a great guy. Got us some national face time with the Super Bowl commercial and the Ellen show. Made us laugh. Played 100% every time he hit the field. He'll catch on somewhere and be fine.
 
First off, this is business and it was a sound business decision not to bring back a 31 year old OG that just came off of microfracture knee surgery. The same kind of knee surgery that McGrady and Amare Stoudemire had, if I am not mistaken.

Second, it will not be Studdard taking Pitts place. More than likely it will be Caldwell, at least what I've been hearing on the radio. Brisiel will be back at the RG spot and Caldwell will be working at LG and Center this off season, so essentially, you are getting younger at the position, maybe even better in the long run...

Besides, Chester has been living a lie for a long time, it was Kyle Turley that discovered him at a grocery store and told him to walk onto San Diego State, not Ephraim Salaam. I don't want liars playing on the team I cheer for....

Not that it has anything to do with anything but thought that was an interesting story by Turley on Super Bowl week...:kingkong:

McClain_on_NFL I think later in the offseason when Pitts gets healthy, he'll sign with a team looking for competition. Knee injury cost him big bucks.

McClain_on_NFL Pitts is one of my all-time favorite players. Great quote. Class act. Gave everything he had. He's got to prove he's healthy, though.

McClain_on_NFL With Pitts being gone, K Kris Brown is the last original Texan. I think he'll have competition. They've worked out some street FA kickers.

Hm everyone keeps saying that about Studdard and I've been hearing Caldwell will move over to LG. I much rather have Caldwell there than Studdard anyway...

See, I agree with all of that. But did he expect a parade? Probably not, but how about a handshake, thanks, and good luck? Is it that hard to treat people with respect? You know, it IS possible to make a sound business decision, let someone go, and still be gracious.

Some would say it's the Texan way.

I don't pretend to know the inner-workings of the business side of sports. But, I have noticed that I hear this same story in most sports with most teams. I'm from Atlanta and, thus, a huge Braves fan. Braves fans were bombarded with unsettling comments from Tom Glavine and John Smoltz over their unceremonious departures and the (perceived) cold shoulder they received from the organization. And, with all due respect to CP, these guys means infinitely more to the Braves' organization than CP does/did to the Texans. So, I'm likely to side with the "business as usual" side of the matter.
(Sports Network) - Veteran pitcher Tom Glavine expressed his displeasure with the Atlanta Braves over his unexpected release on Wednesday.

Speaking with reporters on Friday after appearing on Atlanta radio station 790 The Zone, Glavine discussed the way things were handled and what the future might hold for a 43-year-old left-hander coming off surgery.

"I feel a sense of betrayal, a little bit," Glavine said. "I have a little bit of resentment for the way things were handled. But bitter, hey what do I have to be bitter about. I've had a nice, long career. A great wife and kids to go home to, so things aren't all that bad.

"I just think things could have been handled a whole lot better than they were."

That said, I think Chester has been a good player for us and I hope that we re-sign him. If not, I am truly appreciative of his 8 years as a Texan and I will root for him wherever he ends up.

I agree with Eriadoc here.

And I'll also say to you fans that believe in building a team slowly like the Texans seem to be doing that those days are gone. The NFL has changed. Free agency is about being agressive and getting your guy in and signed before other interested teams even get a chance to bring them in. The top half of the draft is about getting guys who for the most part can play now. You can't sit em for a couple of years and wait for them to develop. Holes have to be filled. And you sure don't draft 2 tight ends because of bpa. You have to use some common sense and blend need and bpa when making a selection.

The Texans should be really glad that there is no cba. That is the only thing saving them this year from losing more players. They need to start taking care of their own that have played well for them. Building too slow means that you will lose some players that you developed to free agency. And then the process repeats itself by filling the holes left by those departed players. All teams deal with it but the slow builders always seem to have more holes in their lineups than some of the better run teams.

I would say Washinton is an example of a team that goes to the other extreme and tries to build almost exclusively through free agency. They end up with a bunch of big egos that don't play as a team and for the most part are fat and happy with huge front loaded contracts. Smart run teams look at the draft and free agency as a whole. You look ahead to the draft and see which positions are deep and which ones aren't. Figure out what positions that you have a need and that will be the hardest to fill with a potential starter in say the first 3 rounds and then agressively pursue those positions in free agency.

The Texans got extremely lucky with Pollard last season because they went into the season with pure crap at safety outside of Eugene Wilson. How they thought they would get by with what they had boggles the mind. Had Pollard not been cut at the end of preseason the Texans probably would have lost at least 1 more game and maybe more. Their run defense was horrible. I brought up safety just to point out the Texans mindset going into last season.

It is almost the complete opposite of the first 4 years of the Texans existence. They used to overpay for crappy veterans partly because nobody wanted to play here but whatever the case they did it. Todd Wade, Anthony Weaver and Morlon Geenwood lead the pack and some of the franchise's worst free agent signings. Now it seems like the Texans sign street guys and low end free agents and try and hit it big every year in the draft. Problem is that the draft is a crap shoot and every team gets burned some of the time. Okoye was a terrible pick looking back with Willis and Reevis still sitting there. I think we all wondered what the heck they were thinking last year when they took 2 tight ends.

At some point in the Texans existence they are going to have to land a few good free agents that aren't just stop gaps but can legitimately help get us to the playoffs. Pollard qualifies but like I said earlier the Texans were lucky he was cut so late. Smith helped somewhat but I don't think he played to the level that they expected. We should fill at least one of either s, cb, rb, dt or ol so we don't go into the draft with so many holes to fill. Get a legitimate starter and not just another body for camp competition.

i thought we were building through the draft? wasn't pitts like our 2nd draft pick ever?

I just think its a sad day for Texans fans. Pitts has been exemplary amongst a lot of adversity and a lot of bad football. the guy probably deserves to see the team take the next step and be a part of it. now its like we are just treading water.

lets add to our team and stop subtracting from it. i know, i know, they signed Turk and people are already in line for their playoff seats, but losing 3 starters in one year would suck big time...especially if we are only going to add 2nd/3rd tier backups to replace them.

Subtracting Walter, Pitts, Dunta....what are they going to add? Is the team just supposed to get better losing 3 starters? really? i just want to improve, is that so wrong?

I like me some Chester Fried, but he was making 6.2M per year. I think that he was not playing to that level and they could get a better player for that much $$$. Good business decision, but sad to see him go. I suspect that if he does not get any over-priced offers in FA, we may see him back at a significant discount.

I have always been a big Pitts supporter but we don't know the full situation. Is he wanting another contract like he just had? If so I'd tell him to stick his toe in the market and see if that is his market value and then call.
