2009 NFL Draft Thread

Does Caldwell fit the ZBS?

I mean Gibbs must like him if we drafted him, but he sounds more like a player who would play best in a phone booth.

Allowed just one quarterback sack and graded 85 percent for blocking consistency as a senior, earning All-State first-team honors...

Sweet....

Its not a sexy pick, but you guys whining about Matt Schaub needing to stay healthy need to realize this WAS a position of need.

A center. . . Come on!!!! Really?!

Where is our safety or running back?

He has started games at Guard and Tackle. this is a great pick! If Pitts, Briesel, or Myers got injured, we were going to have to start Kasey Freakin' Studdard or Chris White. I'm thrilled with this pick. Also, I heard the guy on Sirius radio with Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwin and he was excellent. He seemed to have a very good grasp of offensive football, was sharp, understood his strengths and weaknesses. I'm thrilled!

Partly, I'm just releived that our brain trust realized how thin we were in the interior line.

I know it's a need, but I just wanted to go with one of the other two options first...I think they are more of a need.

However, in Texans I trust!!!

I likey likey... Solid starter at center or guard for the next 8-10 years.

Agreed....

6. Antoine Caldwell, Alabama 6-3, 309
Pre-Combine Position Rank: 5
Post-Combine Skinny: Disappointing. The 40 time is hardly a big deal for centers, but the 5.23 was slow and he wasn't all that athletic. The 24 reps was an eye-opener.
Positives: Extremely smart … Very quick and great on the move … Can be moved to guard.
Negatives: Can be pushed around by bigger tackles … Needs a little work on his technique … Could stand to be nastier as a run blocker.

Very quick and great on the move. Check out his play on the field...

Caldwell looks like a solid pick to me. But then, I'm always all for drafting good linemen. This pick will help us. :)

btw, positional needs come and go each year. but getting quality players who fill out your depth chart is a need that never goes away

i don't think any team ever looks at their top 5 needs and then drafts players that fill those top 5 needs. it just never happens. draft the best players, coach 'em up, and you'll be a better team, period

his profiles say he was the emotional leader of the bama line.

Texans are drafting tough guys with heart and work ethics. Me likey a lot. Y'all know my issues with team identity and heart. It's an intangible, but this was a good pick. I imagine they're picking talent right now...they probably see a CB/RB they can get in the 4th without having to reach.

Yeah, I am always amazed at the number of people who watch the draft year after year and don't have a better understanding of how it works.

If you look at our remaining needs the two positions that have the thnnest depth are interior OL and RB. As much as we could upgrade in the secondary, we have better depth there. I would expect to see the Texans go RB next. I think it's harder to find a quality guy plaing G/C. I'm excited we got this done in the 3rd.

Depth protecting Schaub was a need and something that wasnt taken care of in free agency like DE. Safe pick.

I am wondering if they are gonna address the problems of Redzone production and Red zone protection. The team was horrible at both.

RB and SS are means to addressing problem.

people assume that once you get a quality starter, you're good to go! in reality, depth is MUCH more important than anything else.

I think you're right. Goodness knows we could stand an upgrade over Myers. I'm going to assume Sensei Gibbs signed off on this pick and make myself happy that way.
....But I am getting a bit nervous about the no RB yet situ.

I really like that. If he pumps up Chester and Eric folks may see some of the retaliation they have been looking for. j/k kinda.

Seems like with cushing and now Caldwell, the Texans seem to be valuing being more emotional and tough than what we have seen in the past.
