i voted Brown. Donald not Andre and i'll tell you why. i'm not a fan of having a thunder and lightning backfield. i feel it makes your offense too predictable. why not have a lightning lightning backfield. or dash and dash if you will. i'm not saying that we dont need a situational back for short yardage but i'd rather have Brown and then sign a free agent to back the two of them up.

thats why i really like jennnings. hes a big back but he does alot of things. good vision and catches the ball well etc

That's good and all, but do you really think the Texans are going to use a 1st or 2nd round pick on a running back? Because I don't.

For this poll I picked Andre Brown as the best RB and value at the draft position listed, but I don't think he'll be available for us in the mid 3rd round. Donald Brown would be very nice as well but I don't see the Texans spending a 1st or 2nd round pick on RB. We'll most likely pick a RB in the 4th round.

The backs that are available are good at what they do, some have superior size and zpeed, some are all-rounders and can catch as well as return kicks, etc.

I know the Texans aren't going to pick a RB untill the 4th round or later so I want Herb Donaldson from Western Illinois on our team. He is a big back and was productive at WIU and can do all the things expected from a RB, catch, run, and block as well.

I'll go off the board with Conredge Collins from Pitt though the draft, Frank Summers and Gartrell Johnson undrafted.

laughing my rearend off right now. malcolm jenkins all the way! beerlover that was funny. vermonter awesome post. trouble here cuz im stuck on the tarmac at hobby on my phone. Donald Brown hands down best RB for us in the draft. But i'd love if we could get Jenkins in the 1st, Eric Wood in the 2nd and Rashad Jennings in the 3rd.

Whether we pick up an early round RB or not, I would look closely at Cal's pounding, sure-handed FB/RB Will Fautoou in the later rounds.

this poll is which back would YOU want? not which back do you think they will draft? i read it over like three times before i voted as to answer the right question.

Jennings is great value in the third.

I like Donald Brown but I don't think we take a back in the first.

I think the third is a good round this year for us to take another back. Jennings may be off the board though so Andre Brown would be my next target.

We could also wait until the fourth and still get a good back. James Davis, Javon Ringer, etc...

Brown and Jennings have great value in the third if they are there. I think the third is good spot to address RB if we don't in the second because I think the second round presents a lot more scenarios with BPA. If McCoy was there with our second round pick, that's who I would take.

Yall know I respect you, but I think there is more value in Jennings in the third than Brown in the first. I like the idea of a 231lb back that can run a 4.5 40. A guy with that kind of size and speed would be a true compliment and not simply a short yardage back. One thing that scares me about D Brown is that he only ran a 4.51 40 at the combine. While a lot of prospects also ran slow times, many chose to run at their pro day. Brown did not, so all we have are his combine numbers.

So, should we take Brown in the first/second: 5'10", 210lbs, 4.51 40 or Jennings in the third: 6'1", 231lbs, 4.52 40. Id take Jennings.

Wouldn't yall?

I'm not a big follower of college football, so I don't know one of the backs from another. But I do hope they take a back in the 3rd, not the 4th, because what backs are left in the 3rd will be better than our pick in the 4th. The 1st and 2nd rounds need to go to the defense.

Nice poll, Maddict5 !

Well, I voted Andre Brown in the 3rd. I think there is a high chance that he will be gone by the #77 pick. Rashad Jennings in the 3rd would probably be fine. I seem to recall some discussion in the past regarding work ethic issues related to Jennings though . . . anyone know more about this issue?

There is more to life than 40 times, but here are some for comparison:

Again...what we're talking about here, unless there is a disaster....is a back who at most will receive ten to twelve touches per game. Unless of course you're planning on trading Slaton away Saturday. Now I'm not so pig headed not to discuss the possibility. If you're talking Rb on day one....that's what you are posting.

I could see them getting each RB around 20 touches a game optimally, similar to TEN with Johnson last year. I for one have no issue with a RB in Round 1. I think from Kubiak's previous game plans it is apparent that he wants to be able to run the ball 35-40 times a game. With an effective duo we could dominate TOP and make a huge difference on both sides of the ball. I would take Curry, Orakpo, or Raji in a heartbeat, but I don't think any will fall to us. There really isn't another defensive player that I am that impressed with this year. I'd rather take a guy that I think can contribute on Opening Day than take Jenkins with our 15th pick to be a nickel back if he's lucky.

I'm one of those people who would like to see us draft Knowshown in the 1st if no elite defense player falls to us. However, I do not see this happening as Moreno will probably come off the board before 15 IMO, so I chose James Davis in the fourth. His stock has dropped a little but so did Slaton's last year.

I agree but I doubt Jenkins is around for our 15th. I would love to see us get either Curry, Orakpo, Raji, Everette Brown, or Malcolm Jenkins. Jenkins I think can be a good FS with good coaching, I don't know if he has the mackup ability to be an elite corner in the NFL

Ok....when has denver ever done this with two backs in the Kubiak era ? It's one guy until he's hurt or he's in the dog house. And the number is not first or second....the number is twenty five. They cannot post twenty five sacks again and expect to catch the division. And I don't care how good you believe these guys are going to be. With out the d-line production, they are DOA before they ever play a snap.

Walter's
Donald Brown(Combine=4.51, expected=4.44, NO Pro Day)

Rashad Jennings(Combine=4.64, expected=4.46, Pro Day=4.52)

http://walterfootball.com/draft2009RB.php

So basically we have a clocked 4.52 for Jennings and a clocked 4.51 for Brown. Why did Brown not run at his pro day? strange. But in essence a man that is 20lbs heavier ran a 40 that is 0.01 seconds slower. Yeah, I'll take the bigger guy thank you.

I agree with you on the RB situation. Moreno is my favorite and it would be hard for me not to want to draft him if he's there for us. I don't think he will be there for us though.

I think we wont start looking at RB until the 3rd in which I would like to take Rashad Jennings if he is there. I'm not a big Andre Brown fan but I wouldn't get mad at that pick. My next two favorites are Glenn Coffee and Gartrell Johnson where I could see us using a 4th on those guys.

Yup. Denver was well known for carrying only two backs on their roster. It's not like they invented the concept of running back by committee or anything. Do you ever play fantasy football? What has the general consensus been on Denver RB's? Has it been "they are a rock solid first round pick. Shanny runs his RB's into the ground." Or has it been "stay the hell away from Denver RB's. They rotate them like a carousel."

BTW it's a little hard to gauge how effective our 4 1st round DLine picks in the last 6 years are at rushing the passer when we never rush the passer.

again, i'm not arguing who i think WILL be picked. i'm arguing who i would like to see in a texans uni next year. you throw the both of them into the backfield interchangeably and wreak havoc. i hate bringing up this argument because people use it for the justification of bringing in another 1st round WR but if Shanny Jr.'s offense is putting up 40 points a game i can't see us losing very often.

Just like when I gave everyone here a report on a undersized Ryans, let me tell you about a steal in the 3rd and getting away with murder in the 4th if we can land Glenn Coffey. He plays BIG, Alstote big, he is not selfish and will fight for second, and third effort. Yes I am a big Bama fan but I always thought he was something special. Even after Utah spanked us that first qtr and Coffey got hurt pretty bad, he gutted it out and was still streaching it out and lifting his knees for 1 more yard, I promise Wells would have never came back in that game. I will take a narrow butt boy with heart, over a big and questionable heart player any day.

Thanks, Maddict. I looked around and found some information. It looks like any issues regarding Jennings work ethic were earlier in his career and that he has "righted his ship". I'm on board with him now and would like to see either him or A. Brown in the 3rd round. I am a bit worried that by waiting until the third we might even miss on these guys. While my preference would be defense in the 1st and Wood or Unger in the 2nd, I would not lose any sleep if we ended up with a good running back in the 1st or 2nd rounds.

Here are a couple of things on point for each:

Rashad Jennings:

Character: For all of his press clippings, Jennings could have had a "me-first" personality, but he is humble to a fault, well-liked by the staff and teammates and team goal-oriented. That was not always the case, as he failed to apply himself in high school, twice transferring at the prep and collegiate levels. The light finally went on in 2006, as he looks to his older brother, Bryan, for the role he played in "righting" Rashad's ship. GRADE: 5.9
Work Habits: Jennings is a good performer, but needs some structure in the training and dining room tables. Weight has been a problem in the past. He does all the little extras in the training room, but has gotten so strong, it has affected his overall agility some (stiffer in his hips at 235 now than he was as a 260-pounder in 2005). He does well with hard coaching and does not need motivation and prodding to put in the extra hours in the weight room. His weight issues are a concern, as he was at 265 pounds earlier in his career, but since he turned to his brother for mentoring, he has shown better maturity and embraced the fact that he will have his best success at peak athletic ability. GRADE: 6.4

Andre Brown:

Character: Brown is well-respected and recommended by his coaches. He's a bit reserved when you first meet him, but he shows good character, solid work ethic and, while quiet, he does command respect from teammates and opponents. GRADE: 6.3.
Work Habits: Brown is a hard worker and one look at his muscular body is evidence that he is a willing participant in the training room. He will do more than what the coaches ask and likes his silent leader by example role. He accepted his role of splitting time with other running backs, thanks to his team-first attitude. He's a good worker in the weight room, but also excels at applying himself on the playing field. GRADE: 6.7

I went Gartrell in the 4th or 5th. I think the guy is exactly what they need and they can get him while still using earlier picks on defense or whatever else you have on your priority list. I wouldn't complain though if they took one a round or so earlier.

I went with Shonn Greene in the 2nd. He was a fantastic RB his senior year showing that he could carry the load if needed, but would need to work on his hands. Only had 8 receptions all year.

If the Texans don't want a RB in the 2nd, or want a player who can catch the ball better I will take Jennings in the 3rd. Just hope that he can go from Liberty College to the NFL without any problems.

Maybe Andre Brown in the 4th. His health concerns me.

Shonn is 24 does that bother you?

I had to go with OTHER. I wanted some of the backs you listed... but not in the round you listed. If I had to take them in the round listed I wouldn't take them. Chris Ogbanna, for example, would be okay in the 6th or 7th but not in the 4th or 5th and I wouldn't take any RB before the 3rd round.

I picked ABrown too. 2nd for me probably is GJohnson later and 3rd is RJennings. Weight and dieting shouldn't be much of a problem on a pro level. I think Brown isn't so much lightning as he is a kind of Chris Taylor back Kubiak desperately wanted to have.

Give me Gartrell

His 40 wasnt good at all. But neither was anyone.

DraftguysTV has a GREAT clip on him and why in a ZBS he's gonna be a steal.

Shonn is 24 does that bother you?

Good point. He is actually 23, but will be 24 when the season starts and yes it does bother me. But the way I see it, is that you really only get 4 years out of a player these days. He will only be 28 when his contract expires, and that is still a good age for a RB. After his second contract he will be done.

Yes, it does bother me, but not enough to pass on him. But lets hope we are able to get him in the 3rd.

I'm not going to do the research for you.....and I didn't post carrying. I posted one guy until he's hurt or in the dog house. And I defy you to prove differently in the modern Kubiak era. Unless there is a trade back....they're not going to take an offensive play maker with a day one pick.

Oh they sent them.....I don't know what games you've been watching there old hoss. Now whether they can get there or not is open for debate. Sending guys who can't get there....more....gets you what my friend ? Hope that magic dust kicks in before October for Ol' Kolar. The number is twenty five.

I wonder if Shanahan did everything the exact same way as his mentor did
