Texans part ways with Weaver, Salaam and Demps

As the 12:01 a.m. Friday deadline for the start of free agency approaches, the Texans are continuing to make moves. They are releasing defensive end Anthony Weaver, offensive tackle Ephraim Salaam and safety Will Demps today.

Weaver is the only player of the three who started last season. He said Monday he found out he would be waived this week. The Texans are looking for a replacement for Weaver at left defensive end in free agency or the draft.

Salaam played behind rookie left tackle Duane Brown last season. Demps began the season as a starter, but lost his job when the Texans moved Eugene Wilson and Nick Ferguson into the lineup.

I'm not sure whether to be surprised by Ephraim or not. I like the guy and with yearly injuries and line experience a premium I thought he'd stay. But he also wasn't too happy last year as a backup.

This is a lot more cuts than I thought we would make. I'm fine if we get more experienced players, I'd just hate to fill all of these vacancies with rookies or castoffs.

I think Salaam was the ultimate pro who stepped up his game, helped his replacement and earned his pay check. I salute him.

It's Christmas!!!! Salaam has been cut! finally! Apparently, the organization finally sees my value and is now operating largely based on my reccomendations. Now, as long as Studdard doesn't make the 53 man roster, everyone will know who is really in charge... That would be me, for those who can't follow my twisted logic. What a day this is shaping up to be. God bless Rashod Butler and the Houston Texans!

We actually have some guys that should have a fair amount of experience...Butler, Studdard...guys like that should have a better chance of making the team and being an intergal part of things...

:specnatz:......:chickendance:.......:yahoo:

Smilies can't describe the pride i feel as i watch the names coming out on the cut list. To borrow a poker term, It looks like they are finally going all in trying to get to that next level! I'm ready for next season already.

I can see this. It is nice when a team decides to stop trotting out the same guys that got them to .500 and to try and turn it up a notch with others. I think there is something to be said for being able to cut guys who you desperately needed on the roster before....kind of like last camp when you actually have tough cuts because there is talent there.

I wouldn't say that they have any experience. Butler has maybe seen 5 live game snaps at most. Studdard might have a series or two under his belt. While both have been here awhile neither has much in the wat of regular season expierence.

The cutting of Salaam is probably more a sign that Gibbs is fairlty confident in the abilities of Butler and Studdard.

Now Chester is going to go on the radio and cry that his friend is no longer on the team and demand more money now and complain that talks of an extension have stalled.

Im glad to see Salaam get cut. That guy was great if you like a guy who will push an edge rusher then fall on the ground and hope to God that the QB can get rid of the ball because the edge rusher is screaming at the QB now.

Weaver is interesting because we dont save much, but I guess they plan on going DE in round 1 to take his place.

I liked Demps but for some reason the coaches think his play went down to where he couldnt even get on the field.

Not Studdard. No way! First of all, Studdard has nothing to do with the tackle position. Second, the tide has turned and the organization is seeing the light. All the dead weight is being recognized as such. Studdard won't make it through camp. We're going with talent and ability over insanity. Goodbye Studdard, goodbye Salaam, goodbye Weaver... the Victor Riley ghost of training camps past will haunt us no longer.... yippeeee!!

Maybe whoever stole Brandon Frye from us last year will give him a low tender and we can get him back. Oh, glory days are here!!!!!

Brown, Winston, Butler, Frye
Briesel, Pitts, Myers, Player to be named, Player to be named, Player to be named.

That sounds like a heck of a line, doesn't it.

Oh man, I just realized that perhaps we'll bid for Jason Brown C/G or Jake Groves C to compete with Myers.

See above post in regard to position.

The cutting of the veteran Salaam indicates that Gibbs has faith in the young guys Butler and Studdard. More about a veteran vs young uys then position.

Frye has already been cut from this team once, why would we want him back?

i sure liked the way Wilson and Ferguson were playing together last year. I didn't miss Demps at all. I will miss a little of what Salaam brought to the table though. Dude was there when we needed him and only complained in the background from what I can remember. Of all the cuts, that's the one we may regret. I don't see Butler as the answer as the swing tackle and from what I've seen, Studdard is lucky to still be on the team.

I don't think that having actual "in game experience" is the be all end all when it comes to "experience".

All you need is a guy that can step in that knows the plays, that you are fairly confident can match up physically against the DE's they'll face...

My point is that they should have a very good understanding of the system.

Schaub didn't have a whole lot of in game experience when we handed him the reigns, but he did have the experience of going through practices, learning a system, and just knowing what being a pro is about.

I'd be curious as to how you came to this conclussion? Espically inlight of the fact that Butler has maybe 2 total minutes of game tape, and I'm fairly certain that you don't attend too many practices.

I'll agree with that. I think after working with both Butler and Studdard for a year, Gibbs is fairly certian of their abilities and how they would perform in the system.

I agree...

I dunno why so many people are down on the stud though...I think at the very least he's a serviceable back-up...

Nope it is $2.350 ................

Demps, Will 2009

$2,350,000 Base Salary

$500,000 Signing Bonus

$2,850,000 2009 Cap Figure.

Actually dale was right. You include the allocated bonus payment of $500,000 for his 2010 cap hit as well. He was signed through 2010

Kubiak hinted right at the end of the season that Salaam wouldn't be back... and if you saw him on Jim Rome's TV show, he was still crying about Duane Brown having his starting job handed to him.

...and to whoever said they were surprised by Demps being cut - he was HORRIBLE last year. He was so bad that he was inactive a couple of times. That plus the fact that he was by FAR the highest-paid safety on the team sealed his fate a long time ago.

Looks like they wanted a last shot possibly to get something in return for Weaver. Wouldn't surprise me to see him go for the cheap to the Jets to be reunited with Rex Ryan.

I liked Salaam and I'm not sure many would argue he saved our butts at LT for a year or two, however I think the brain trust probably feels good with Butler going ahead. Which is good.

Demps I'm not sure what to think. Pretty bad when you get extended and another FA like Ferguson takes your spot over. Do hope they resign Eugene Wilson.

Is that officially the last bad contract off the books now?

I know how you feel about Studdard, but if Kubiak/Smith didn't think he was worth a roster spot, then he wouldn't be on the team.

I'm not saying Studdard is going to be a starter, but I wouldn't write him off the team already. He has been a over achiever his whole career.
