Texans part ways with Weaver, Salaam and Demps

I know how you feel about Studdard, but if Kubiak/Smith didn't think he was worth a roster spot, then he wouldn't be on the team.

I'm not saying Studdard is going to be a starter, but I wouldn't write him off the team already. He has been a over achiever his whole career.

I love Studdard's nastiness. I hope he can elevate his level of play enough to stick.

Frank Okam, however - is one ex-Horn who I'm afraid isn't going to make it.

Agree 100% on Okam. I'm hoping the new D-Line coach can light a serious FIRE underneath Okam, but who knows. I think if he doesn't seriously impress early in camp, then he will likely be gone.

Even if he does light a fire, I think Frank would have to lose some weight. He could still be that huge space-eating NT, but I think he'd need to do it at 320 rather than the 342 he's listed at now. Even an attacking line like Kollar coaches can still have a big fat guy there, but not one that's THAT fat.

Hopefully, re-sign Eugene Wilson.

Exactly.

I think we're going CB or LB in the draft.

All this talk about Okam being gone? If TJ is still here...Frank ain't getting cut. The dline has had a lot of focus, in terms of the draft, with Mario and Amobi. Bulman and Robinson and Cochran are also showing signs of being dark-horse d-linemen. With an "attacking" style of dline coach, I'm not concerned with filling out our d-line with first round picks. I think Kollar will whip Okam into shape.

Eugene seems to have made a better difference at safety than Demps had made the year before. What Demps did for us two years ago, Wilson has doubled it IMO.

That leaves the corners and the linebackers. Dunta is likely g-o-n-e unless the two sides make up a lot of ground on the contract. DeMeco is making noise.

The two "shocker" picks that we could do in round 1 would be to go RB or QB, but we seem to be very methodical and calculated under Smithiak. A trade-down, out of 15, and down enough spots to grab us another 3rd rounder wouldn't be unlikely.

Reading the tea-leaves, I think d-line is not a focus in round 1 nor in round 2 unless that "just riiiiight" guy is sitting there for us. I think this is a draft that we see us stockpile LBs and DBs. It's going to be a bloody war in training camp for those final roster spots, and we can always put guys onto Practice Squad in their rookie year--Then bring 'em up if a LB or DB gets hurt.

Rememer the days, in the Capers era, when we would watch on Draft Day and post "WTH?" and "Scratching my head on THAT one...yikes." How can you be a Texans fan right now and not love watching us on draft day? This is why the NFL is the best pro sport: A long layoff, but the right amount of "stuff" sprinkled into the mix during the off-season...juuuust enough to keep you on the edge of your seat the whole year.

I don't think the weight is a issue with Okam. He doesn't look that out of shape. Really, he looks like a Monster, but that makes his lackluster performances even more confusing.

The Texans knew what they were getting themselves into when they took Okam. The questions on Okam's motor, intensity and love for the game have been question marks since his days at Texas.

I think he is going to have to show some serious fire and passion to keep his roster spot.

I'm not trying to hate on Okam. I'm rooting for the guy to succeed.

Yeah, if you're saying the bottom line on Okam is the mental (meaning fire, not intelligence, obviously) and not the physical, I'm 100% with you on that. That said - last year when he DID get in the games, he very often absolutely BLEW UP the plays that came at him - but he was so spent after those few plays that he didn't even make it in after that.

So I dunno - maybe if he gets that fire lit, it will affect what appears to be a huge conditioning issue.

Man i'm loving the moves all this does is give us a chance to pick up some really good free agents and it give us flexibility in the draft but we have to nail the free agent signings though.

This is a lot more cuts than I thought we would make. I'm fine if we get more experienced players, I'd just hate to fill all of these vacancies with rookies or castoffs.
If they did that, could you REALLY tell the difference? It's been nuttin' but for 7 years at most positions.

It's Christmas!!!! Salaam has been cut! finally! Apparently, the organization finally sees my value and is now operating largely based on my reccomendations. Now, as long as Studdard doesn't make the 53 man roster, everyone will know who is really in charge... That would be me, for those who can't follow my twisted logic. What a day this is shaping up to be. God bless Rashod Butler and the Houston Texans!
I have a hard time believing Salaam is gone. Weaver has been a bust for a while, but Salaam did pretty much what he was paid to do. I'm glad to see some aggressive personnel move by Kubes, though. I think that shows him growing as an HC AND more confidence in his DC. The only thing he's done as HC without thinking it through is the 2 minute drill, play challenges and, maybe, David Carr. I have the utmost confidence in this FO to make the right offseason choices, so do what ya goota do, guys. Get us to the playoffs in '09.

Well, everytime they talk about Butler it's like syrup over pancakes...we'll see. I'm with you Tejano, better hope Duane stays healthy this summer. Salaam pretty much was a plug and play guy.

Salaam was a horrible pass blocker. A DE with speed would blast by him with ease leaving him on his hands and knees with his blubber jiggling.

"Plug and play"...pffft! Plug and play like **** maybe.

I'm wondering if there is a cheaper, younger veteran somewhere out there that can do what Salaam did.

What made this move good was they appearantly saved 3.9 against the cap this year.

What sux is now we don't know what Ellen is gonna do for her segment with Chester and Salaam

too bad about salaam. i live in sacramento and quite a few people i know went to hs with him.
no more,"you're a texans fan!?! oh wait, my boy ephraim plays for them."

well what he was making....being paid as a back up swing guy...I'd say he did just fine. I've been watching people banging on Brisiel this off season. And every time I see it I wonder what final seven games they were watching ?

I'm pretty grateful of the work Salaam did here. Especially the thirty three consecutive starts when there was absolutely no one in the cup board to replace him.

Salaam looked like Anthony Munoz compared to some guys we've had .

Up to this point I think you can argue that Salaam has probably been our best LT in franchise history

People have no idea how happy I am that we cut Weaver. I have to admit I wasnt expecting it til next year cause of the minimal savings for the cap. To Salaam I just want to say thanks for your hardwork and professionalism, good luck.
