Fisher needs a QB, and the Titans would OWN. Do you want your team heading into the next season with Kerry Collins and Vince Young? Collins played a Tommy Maddox-type role this season. What's he going to do for an encore next season?
If they got what they got...out of Kerry Collins...think what happens if they had a good QB. They had size and talent at TE. They had a great 1-2 punch at RB. They had a great o-line and d-line. Kicker was solid. Coaching was solid except for a few isolated incidents.
Bud screwed the Titans when he drafted VY. Now there's a lot of pride tied up in that pick. You can't go QB in the first round because it admits that VY was a mistake. So you gotta' gamble on a guy later on...to make it look like its just depth and nothing too seriously-minded for the immediate future.
The VY pick was disastrous. 50% based on his talent, possible merchandising revenue, and his on-field potential, and 50% based on Bud's desire to stick it to Houston.
IF you got a receiver, and had to stick with VY and Collins...you need a big possession-type receiver. A guy who can run the quick slant or the curl and get you those clutch passes when it really counts.
Got any suggestions on who they can get?
Here are the UFAs
Kurt Warner, UFA, Arizona Cardinals
Kerry Collins, UFA, Tennessee Titans
Matt Cassel, UFA, New England Patriots (Rumor he will be franchised)
Jeff Garcia, UFA, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Rex Grossman, UFA, Chicago Bears
Kyle Boller, UFA, Baltimore Ravens
Charlie Batch, UFA, Pittsburgh Steelers
J.P. Losman, UFA, Buffalo Bills
Patrick Ramsey, UFA, Denver Broncos
So really, it's Warner, Collins or Garcia for the caretaker role. There is no chance in hell that the Titans can get any of the rumored big 1st rounders in this year's draft, so right now, in a sense, they're kinda stuck. Based on Fisher's comments about VY (below), I suspect if he wants to turf VY, he will.
(On what he needs to see from Vince Young this offseason)
We expect 100 percent commitment from Vince and will accept nothing less than that.
To me, that sounds pretty direct, as if he's saying to VY - try me. Just try me.
Don't be too sure on the club not admitting a mistake and moving on. They wasted a 2nd rounder on Chris Henry then the next year took Johnson. They got that mulligan right.
