State of the O-line

The great offensive line evaluation specialist Steelbtexan knows. He just said he's only a swing OT and that's it.

I never said I was great at anything. I do give me opinion on what I see and you can take anyway you like.

IMHO, Davenport isn't starter quality and never will be unless he puts in a ton of work, his cousin wasn't willing to put in the work and I dont think Davenport will either.

Snark on man.

Bwhahaha just jiving at you Steelbtexan. You right he needs a lot of work, especially in pass protection.

I don't like him on the right side at all , his footwork goes to sh!t. You'll see him take extra and false steps that he just doesn't do when he's lined up on the left side. Davenport is a natural Left Tackle or …. nothing at all.

Nothing at all it is then, unless he improves a lot.

Who was his cousin SteelB, and sounds like you think think ambition is a genetic characteristic ?

Interestingly, Wisconsin is utilizing a 7 offensive linemen line with two OTs as tight ends versus Iowa. If Texans had two additional tackles that might benefit as the run game could be even better.

Keep your eyes on Kelemete tomorrow that guy is suspect.

All of them are suspect. We could be the worst O-line in the league.

Blitz pick up is non existent
Tackles worthless vs speed rushers

Thankfully the Giants suck. But if you ever need a lifeline in your season, play the Texans they will make you feel like a world beater after the game and gives you hope that your season has just begun.

Is game versus Giants a make or break scenario for playoffs? On radio shows that seems to be leading opinion. I think I'm in for the old one game at a time.

Three games in, the Division is still in play. We've lost a head to head against the Titans & are the only team in the Division without a win.

Jacksonville has already beaten one common opponent we've already lost to, New England.

They've also beaten the Giants, another common opponent.

So, we've already lost a Division game, already lost to one common opponent they already beat... losing to another would make it really difficult to win the Division even if we beat the Jags twice, which looks to be more difficult than beating the Giants once, at home.

We lose this game, imho, we have to start praying for every other team in the AFC to seriously implode.

& we're not even a quarter through the season.

History says that losing three games in a row (especially to start the season) means that you are a bad football team. From a mathematical standpoint, the Texans are far from eliminated from the playoffs with a loss, but a loss is a negative indicator of what the team really is.

If we tie Jags for most wins but beat them and Colts twice and beat Titans that would be a very good year. Sloppy win in Reliant doesn't help me, it needs to be solid win with no serious injuries. Man I'm hoping for a lot.

Uh huh

In this case it could be more prudent to say this is a make or break scenario for the 2019 RD1-1 pick.

I would be OK with the Texans having 1-1 (Again) in next yrs draft.

Sometimes you've gotta take a step back to get better. The only way this happens is if Watson gets hurt again. If this happens do you look at QB at 1-1?

Outside of the requisite need for OL.....if the Texans had the RD1-1 I would be hard pressed to pass on the the QB's from West Virginia or Oregon. But.....and this is a big but, those 2 QB's were on the board and the Texans wanted to move back, they could easily get a king's ransom for the pick in 2019.

While I agree with the overall sentiment, Martin and Fulton are + blockers. Rankin is a rookie, but he shows skill while making his mistakes. I'd rather they get beat to the outside than getting beat inside like Kelemete has been. Davenport and Kelemete are liabilities right now.

I don't know how many games ive said '' k good we play X team ' and then proceed to **** the bed. Crossing fingers because if Texans lose this season is over.

you think Brian Gaine & Bill O'brien can handle 1-1 better than the Texans have in the past?

I saw Mancz in the game, 4th qtr. Did Kelemente get benched, or was he hurt?

First play of the game - Rankin totally whiffs on his assignment , the only reason its not a sack is that Davenport was flagged for a false start and the play blown dead.

This OL is a mess …. Watson will be lucky to make it thru the season.

Football Outsiders:

This was truly the game where we saw the impact of Houston's offensive line. Right tackle Julie'n Davenportcommitted five penalties all by himself, including one to take a touchdown off the board. The Giants sacked Deshaun Watsonfour times and hit him 11. Of the players that got sacks, three of them had less than six career sacks coming into the game. Two of them got their first career sack. The other one was by Connor Barwin, basically a journeyman at this point of his career.

I remember people said it couldn't be worse than last year.

I think it might be.

It's not,

The question is how to go about fixing it this offseason and if Watson can regain the magic he had over a short span last yr. If those 2 things happen the Texans will be a good team next yr. Which is an improvement over last/this yr.

When do we decide that the OL sucks all of you lets see how the OL plays out in the regular season guys?

anyone think they would ever miss Derek Newton?

I mean I was hoping to just find 3 starters on this years line. So far only one I am really sold on is Fulton, I think Rankin can be a player for us with some seasoning, whether thats keeping him at tackle or moving him elsewhere idk. Martin hasn't looked bad this year either. So far I say we have 1 starter for next year with a possibility of 2 others. We weren't fixing last years abomination in 1 off season, especially considering we had no young talent on our line anywhere

Way too many holes to be good next year. Besides the OL, there's TE, RB, and the secondary. Plus just depth in general and some of our best guys being injury prone.

Oh, they could've invested in a certain all pro OG in the offseason.

They probably could do the same next offseason although I haven't looked at the FA list. I would be happy if they drafted two rookie OT's (One of which should be a high pick) and moving Rankin into LG where I think he's better suited to play.

All of this depends on Watson staying healthy. If he blows out his knee again then QB would be at the top of my list.

Add a couple of OT's with the first two picks and a CB with your other 2nd rd pick. Add a vet CB in FA and draft a RB in the 2nd after trading up and those hole are filled. This can be done in one offseason. It's been done by the Bucs this offseason.

@lockedontexans
Among NFL Centers with at least 100 snaps through the 1st 3 games, Nick Martin ranks 23rd overall (acc to Pro Football Focus)

Which says that we don't have even 1 good lineman on the team ... I defy anyone to say that our player personnel - evaluation/selection/acquisition is not the worst in the league .... and this is not a recent problem !

I think the interior guys have been ok honestly. Until yesterday we were leading the league in rushing & half of DW4's escapes are b/c he can step up in the pocket. The pressure and hits have been coming from the tackle positions. You understand that Rankin is going to have his struggles as a rook, plus he's on DW4's front side where Rankin is so he can see the rush. Davenport on his backside is drawing the defense's best pass rusher & he's just not handling it well. Can't even run guys around Watson b/c Davenport can't handle his guy once they redirect to chase after Watson.

No i believe currently they have Fulton ranked as our best lineman
Before the game IIRC Martin was ranked best of our line by PFF.
“Not sure about Kelemete right now, probably will know better about Kelemete in the middle of the week for you,” head coach Bill O’Brien said Monday. “Mancz is a fighter. He’s a smart player, tough guy, and he did okay.”

Mancz started at left guard for Kelemete, who suffered a knee injury in warmups prior to the Texans Week 3 game against the New York Giants.

It definitely was under Ricky, lets give Gaine a chance to have a full compliment of draft picks before we judge. Although I will admit that Gaine's lets sign a bunch of backup OL strategy looks like it's going to turn out as expected.

I did like Gaine's 1st draft.

I probably missed it on this thread or somewhere else, but why was Kelemete not at G on Sunday? He get hurt and I just missed it?

Nevermind....just saw it. Hurt in warmups....SMH

Is it out of only 32?

They weren't clear if they included backups with limited snaps.

From what I've seen before 23 would be a decent ranking

Bottom 1/3 isn't a decent ranking.

I cant believe fans have been conditioned to think like this.

Martin dropped quite a bit, I remember seeing last week he was the 12th ranked center according to PFF now he is 24th. Fulton dropped quite a bit to going from like the 24th ranked guard to 39th. Both still earning above average grades though
