Should Mills be given the reins next season?

Yep I really wonder what some posters vision for this team looks like and how much they value leadership in the locker room? Obviously at his age Amendola can't give you a full 16 games as a starting slot wr. But he can give you 8-10 games of quality wr play and be a mentor for the young slot wr's. For the vet min or slightly above that there's value in that.
My opinion is this, its a wasted roster spot. Cooks plays all 3 spots so the mentorship is there. Fill those other slots with explosive players. You also need those young legs to play special teams. If you have an injury, you can always call him off the couch like they did this season.

I respect your opinion.

But we've got different visions on what the roster should look like. I want a vet at each position and a young guy for the vet to teach behind the vet. Cooks works with the outside guys even though he can play in the slot. Amendola works with the young slot guys.

Mills works with TT
Burkhead works with drafted RB and a young FA RB
Britt works with the IOL
Tunsil works with the OT's.

Etc....

Why do you feel like a slot guy is important? How does a team like KC and Dallas score points without a designated slot guy? The way the NFL is now, you can slot guys without them actually being slot guys. Your tight end and backs can do what the slot guy does. Its about fluidity, not rigidity.

Dump Dorsett & Conley. Put those young explosive STers in their spot. Amendola & Burkhead bring a toughness to the skill positions we need & don’t have otherwise

So, exactly what are the coaches doing while these veterans are working with the younger players? For the record, I don't want Tunsil teaching any OT how to run block. Also, he has been on the roster for three years. Have you noticed his working with the OTs improving their play?

Cant fix a bunch of talentless small school guys. It's not just about on field play. It's about being a pro. But yes, young guys tend to learn better from players that are currently playing the game, moreso than coaches coaching them up. You need leaders that have been there and done that on a team. IMHO

Look at guys that the Pats/Tampa/Green Bay/Chargers/Rams/49ers/Raiders etc... use in the slot. You know, the successful offenses.

Please name the slot man for Patriots, Tampa. Green Bay, Chargers, 49ers, Dallas, KC, you know the successful offenses, I'm waiting.

Meyers/Godwin/Adams plays alot in the slot. But Rodgers specifically asked for Cobb to be traded to the Packers so he values the position.

Allen/Lamb/Hardman, but they move Hill around alot. Anyways you get the idea. Alot of 80-100 catch guys. Kind of an important position.

I honestly don't care if my left tackle is a great run blocker. Your scheme and the inside guys can control that. What you dont want is your left tackle being a turnstile.

See, there you go trying to wordplay me again. Adams, nor Godwin are slot guys. Neither are Allen, Lamb, nor Hardeman. Just like Hopkins wasn't a slot guy. Just because the coach scheme those guys to get free releases doesn't mean they're slot guys. All those guys are boundary/perimeter wr who because they're playmaker, the coach puts them in the slot to give them more field to function with. Amendola, Welker, Edelman are more slot guys. Those guys you mentioned play all the wr spots. Those guys I mentioned are 98% inside slot guys.

I can no longer get Texans games where I live so I’m stuck to reading transcripts, etc. After Sunday’s game Mills again reiterated that he is more successful in an up tempo game like I guess the Titans game was. I wonder if his struggles on the road are perhaps because TK calls a more conservative game plan in an attempt to limit DM’s errors in a hostile environment? If so that has to change.
I really don’t understand why Kelly won’t go uptempo to get that offense in some type of rhythm. But we all know he’s a product of Bill O’Brien, therefore, going conservative is to be expected.

I'm not going to debate this with you but Godwin absolutely works out of the slot. Evans and AB on the outside. Gallup and Cooper work outside and Lamb mainly from the slot. Hopkins was an outside WR that BOB sometime put in the slot, but I would consider him an outside WR.

Adams plays all over, but like I said Cobb was brought in to play th slot.

Obviously you haven't watched or you wouldn't have made this post. I'm done here.

When Jameis was throwing for 5k, Godwin was in the slot? When they brought in AB, both AB and Godwin played the slot? Gallop and Cooper were together for 3 yrs prior to Lamb, who played the slot other than the 1 yr of Cobb? All those teams mentioned didn't have a 36 yr old washed up wr teaching young wrs the slot, which is my point. Who taught CD to play the slot? Who taught Godwin to play the slot from 2017 until now? If your coaches do their job, you dont need old dudes to teach them especially when you have Cooks who is already here?

I'm talking today

Beasley/Lamb

You're failing badly at attempting to move the goalposts

Nah, you want to keep a 37 yr old washed up slot wr to teach that position. Then you rattled off a bunch of teams who doesn't even have top tier slots. The ones you attempted to didn't have a Danny Amendola to teach the position to the younger dudes wasting a space on the roster. You still haven't told me the vet who taught Godwin and Lamb how to play the slot.

Amendola really looked washed up last Sunday. You don't consider Godwin, Beasley, Kupp, Meyers, Renfrow, Allen, Lamb,Thomas, Kirk, etc... to be kind of important.

Most of these teams had a vet slot to learn the ropes from.

But another great attempt to move the goalposts.

I was living in Denver from '82 thru '85, was there the year Elway was traded to Denver after the draft. Mills smoked Elway comparing 1st year stats side by side, out performed Elway against his 2nd year stats as well. I'm not saying Mills will be a HOFer, but he also out performed most of the 1st round QB from the 2021 draft...and he did this on a crap team with a crap O Line and no running game. We have to give Mills some credit here, he out performed Lawrence too if you factor in that he played in I think 4 less games, and even so, STILL threw 4 more TDs!
I don't think they're asking in JAX if Lawrence is deserving of the starting job next year, I'm confused as to why we aren't putting Mills ahead of Lawrence and most of the other 1st round QBs? Why's everyone dogging this guy? He's freakin' earned this shot next year more so than all these other guys!

But you can't name the 30+ yr old washed up vet they kept to show the you slot the ropes can you? Make it simple, got to the year they were drafted and pull the depth chart. I don't know why you keep putting Myers and Renfro up there like the Raiders and Patriots have good offenses.

Troy Brown

They're good players on playoff teams.

We're not going to ever agree, so I'm moving on from this discussion.

Interesting read

I wonder who they're going to bring in to compete with Davis. I'll be really disappointed if they bring Tyrod back.

I'm hoping they bring in a young former first round pick like Drew Lock, or Sam Bradford, if they can get them cheap.

Drew Lock was a 2nd rounder and Sam Bradford hasn't played since 2018...

I’d still like to kick the tires on Josh Rosen b/c he’ll come cheap, he’s still young, and he may have some good upside if a coaching staff can coax it out of him.

I’d also sign Colt McCoy as QB2/QB3, or QB veteran mentor for both of these young QB’s.

That would be my approach to the QB Room for 2022. If this doesn’t work…2023 would be the season to get a QB.

From all I have been hearing, it's Mills' starting job to lose. All Caserio is doing with his statements is leaving the official decision to whoever is the new HC.

Exactly. You get the feeling as you read it that Nick is set with Mills. After all he mentions back ups not potential starters. That's kind of a dead give away. True the title is misleading

I don't think it Tyrod will be back. So, I'm with you on this a young former 1st to 3rd round QB who didn't wet the bed. Just wasn't great in the system ran by the team who drafted them. Or they just needed some reps to see what they could do

It's apples and oranges trying to compare stats from different eras. But comparing 2021 to 2021 is legit. Mills did put up better numbers than Lawrence, Wilson, and Fields. Give credit to the coaches. Give credit to Mills. He came a long way from how he looked in the preseason. That's just hard work, day after day.

& before the season everyone agreed the Texans were the worst team with the worst coach. We were supposed to have been winless.

More like oranges and tangerines. I chose Elway because he had a cannon of an arm and their offense pretty much depended on that arm and he wound up in the top 5 in passing yards.
Point taken though.

To further your point - the rules have changed so much on when and where you can hit a QB. Now it seems a defender’s can’t even touch a QB’s helmet. QBs these days are in bubbles. You can’t compare QBs in the last 5 years even to a Brady and Manning, and it’s hard to compare a Brady and Manning to a QB like Elway or Montana.

The QBs of today aren’t hit like Brady and Manning were. And Brady and Manning weren’t hit like Montana or Elway.

Same for WRs.

Agreed, Even more so the WR position.

The only person you can compare is Brady to Brady. The fact that you cant compare players in different eras falls directly on a lack of leadership and ruining of the game IMHO during Furher God'ell's reign of uncontrolled power.

Did Culley coach Mills on a day to day basis? Pretty sure that would have been Hamilton and even Kelly.

Remember when some thought that Mills should ride the bench and playing Tyrod was the best thing for the team?

Those were the fans that wanted the team to win as many games as possible. Not the fans that knew whether this season was successful or not didn't come down to W/L's, it was about seeing if Mills was the future and his development. To me last season was a success.

I'm just saying it's not like the situation with Mahomes & Watson. Where Mahomes had many advantages. In 2021, Lawrence, Wilson, & Fields should have had the advantage, but Mills played better than them regardless.

I was one of them. I thought Tyrod would play well enough to win. Against Jacksonville, he did. Against Cleveland, he did. But when he came back, in two games we saw he didn't play as well as Mills did against tougher opponents. I no longer saw an advantage of playing Tyrod.

I thought it was about evaluating our coaches as much as the players.

Culley is sitting somewhere counting his $22 million, making his retirement plans and is really, really glad that you didn't give Caserio your opinion.

Good for Culley

Doesn't bother me 1 bit since that 22 mil doesn't count against the cap and I happen to think it's the price to pay to get the coach Caserio wanted all along. I swear some of y'all care more about the McNair's $$$$ than getting the most talented coaches/players on the team as possible. That's all I really care about and look at the rest as the cost of doing business.

It was a joke. Meaning if you had spoken to Caserio and told him the season was a success. He might have reconsider keeping Culley.
