Nick Caserio - New GM

I wouldn’t let him go unless I was getting three firsts. And even then - why would I want to take a chance on another GM just with the possibility of ending up with another Rick Smith?

Caserio has proven his worth to this franchise.

Think about other franchises when they get a solid GM. They don’t trade away that talent. Ravens, Packers, and I would through in the Eagles too.

Caserio is proving to be a talent.
So for one thing I absolutely want Nick to stay.

With that out of the way I actually think Rick smith is a good GM for any organization that already has their franchise QB. Just my .02 though.

Except it looked like the plan failed miserably. Looked like Caserio thought Flores was that guy (which I liked) but then that blew up in their face.

Nobody was "holding on" to Culley or Lovie it's just dysfunctional to fire 3 coaches in 3 years.
Doesn’t matter what it looked like. He did what he had to do to get all of those picks for the sexual predator while sogning scrubs to be stop gap coaches. Let me ask you this: would you rather him have held on to Lovie and keep starting Mills just because you’re worried about what others say/think about the franchise? Or, do you like what we now have and acknowledged that the man did a hell of a job given the circumstances?

Couldn't care less about Mills, said that a hundred times. DGAF what others think about this franchise. I thought it was dysfunctional & barely treading water.

I'm pretty sure drafting Stingley & Pitre had nothing to do with Lovie's preference. & when he fired Lovie I doubt DeMeco was on his mind. Things seem to have worked out, but more in a blind pig kind of way.

I'm warming up to him though.

Simply for drafting Stroud/WA/Tank, Scruggs.

This doesn't even include all of the offseason FA signings or picking up guys like Barnett/Carson Houston/KJ in season or trading for decent trading for OL re-enforcements before the season started due to injury.

As much as I'm enjoying this run I really can't wait to see what Caserio will do in the off season with a butt ton of money, a franchise QB, a HC players want to play for and a state with no income tax. Even Cleveland's first round pick is in a place where we can get a player to help out. Have a feeling we will be a team other teams do not want to play.

I disagree, after that video of Watt and DeMeco talking after a game and Watt asked him to go make Houston great and he said he would I think Houston was always on DeMeco's mind and he might have expressed that interest through unofficial channels. I believe Lovie knew he was out before the end of the season. Well why would they do that unless they already had his replacement in mind knowing he could still screw them over, which he tried to do. With that in mind DeMeco was the hottest HC hire on the market so if they were just hoping he would sign that was a huge gamble. Caserio strike me as the type to only gamble when he already knows what the cards are.

We already -are- a team others do not want to play.

Not yet

They are still thinking it is luck.

Every team in the playoffs would pick Houston as the opponent if they could.

Yep, even with us destroying the Browns they are saying it's because Flacco threw two pick 6s. Not bothering to mention that great play from the defense played a huge part in those in interceptions. Even with out that CJ was carving their defense up and Tunsil made Garret a non-factor.

That's not what I'm hearing when I watch the talking heads. They think Cj is a phenom & the reason for all our success. They do give DeMeco some credit too. But mainly Cj.

Vegas is different. Opening as 8 point dogs to Baltimore probably says more about what they think about Baltimore than they do about Houston.

Last time I looked, Texans were a 9.5 dog to the Ravens. I would take the dog if I were a betting man. I see a close game…with a chance that one or the other scores late to open it up a bit. That said I’m taking the dog here.

I think the line should be in the 5-7 range, but those lines are set to try and get equal money. If a lot of money was coming in for the Texans we would see the line drop, and right now it’s pretty steady.

quick comment on Nick. he’s done some good stuff, no question. But I think we should acknowledge that Lady Luck has shined on his shoulder pretty brightly too. Before anointing him as a great GM, I want to see his moves this off-season…but clearly his arrow is pointed up.

Agree completely.

This is what I’m hearing as well. Nothing but hype with plenty of love. The only ones doubting this team is a few of our fans and those hating ash Colts, Titans and Jaguars fans.

Vegas changed it to 7.5 now.

I don’t know brother. There’s a reason for Demeco knowing that he was going to be the Texans new HC before the 2022 season was even over with. The video of JJ. Watt, still dressed in in a Cardinals uniform, telling Demeco (while Demeco was the 49ers DC) to “Go Make Houston Great” and Demeco replying “I will” while Lovie was still the Texans HC clearly proves that Nick thought about Demeco as the next HC WAAAY before they even fired Lovie Smith. Hell, I’m almost sure the plan was in motion the day they fired Culley and hired Lovie Smith.

I don’t know that, of course, but it couldn’t be more obvious. Either way, GO TEXANS!

He was lucky he got Stroud.

The rest is because of being smart and good old fashion hard work.

I'm just glad that my prediction of playoffs is three years came true.

I wouldn't say he's had any luck with injuries this year, but still managed to put a team together that has gone as far as any Texans team since their inception.

I wonder if we beat the Ravens as badly as we did the Clowns, will it then be enough for Vegas to see the Texans in a different light? Now, I’m loving the oddsmaker keeping us underdogs in almost every game. I placed a $2,500 bet on the Texans against the Steelers and gained $3,250 I believe in profit or somewhere in that neighborhood. Then, I placed a $2,500 bet on the Texans when they played the Saints and I got around $2,750 in profit.

Against KC at home or Buffalo at theirs?

I'm extremely nervous and cautious with my money. Don't get me wrong...I invest in stocks, which is its own form of gambling...but in general, I'm the guy walking into a casino with $100 to spend and sweating bullets at the thought of losing it. I'd never bet $2500 on anything, no matter how wealthy I was. I'm not wired that way. But man...that is sweet! Glad you pulled it off. That's amazing! It's just not for me.

I’m not an extreme gambler, as you see $2,500 is the most I’m willing to put on the line. By the way, I usually get anywhere from $5k up to $10k bonuses every quarter. That’s my vice (bourbon bottle collecting, weed, guns, betting) money, lol. If I didn’t get that $100-$200 of my hard earned cash would probably be my limit as well.

It wasn't up to Culley as to whether or not Kelly was fired. Culley didn't even hire Kelly. Culley was fired because he wasn't a good head coach. That was obvious to everyone.

Culley wasn't a good HC it's true but the trigger for his firing was Caserio said when asked that there would be coaching changes, meaning firing Kelly, and Culley then in a press conference said that no one was being replaced while he was HC. Caserio decided that his figure head, bridge coach was getting to big for his breeches.

Just to throw fuel on the fire, in January 2022, Ryans turned down a second interview with the Vikings and had no further interviews. He returned to San Fran and the rest is history.

Could Caserio and Ryans have had discussions in 2022 to give it one more year to clean house and get our cap in order?

I just made myself a tinfoil hat!

Cully was dead man walking at that presser. Nick and our old buddy Jack had already met with Cal about that. Cully was supposed to be a players coach and all he did was divide the locker room. Clock management, situational football. The guy refused a penalty and punted. Totally out of his element.

I really do believe that DeMeco was the plan for much longer than was publicly know. I won't say it was the plan from the beginning but I do think by around mid season of 2022 they had an understanding.

If I live to the age of 120, I’ll never understand the Culley hiring. Never, ever ever. It made no sense on any level. Did they even ask Lovie? He made sense in 2021. If not him, there had to be a young coordinator, an up and comer..or a washed up former HC looking for some cash. I just don’t buy the narrative.

I think when Ryans accepted the interview, the Texans moved him to the top of the list. Ryans had refused to interview with the Vikings the year prior in 2022 and the Colts and Panthers in 2023. It was a good sign that Ryans accepted and an even better sign when he told Cal, Hannah, and Nick the Texans job was his #1 priority and let's make it happen.

Everyone knew Culley wasn't a long term answer. He was a rookie HC AND the oldest HC in the NFL. It was clear that he was just suppose to be a calming HC to create a different culture than what teapot brought. It was a golden parachute, get to finally be a HC after a lifetime of being the brides maid, a big contract to retire off of and all you have to do is toe the line and don't think for yourself. I don't even think they cared about the win-lost ratio because that just means better draft pick. Easy money.

Trouble is Culley for whatever reason decided to try and actually be the coach and the guy making decisions. Don't know why he thought that would fly but it was completely opposite of what he was hired for.

They thought they had someone that would just be happy to be a HC and wouldn't try to think for himself. Give him a nice contract and when you actually find your real HC and then pay Culley's contract out and say thanks for the help.

Culley though at some point decided he would be a real boy and wish upon a star.

It was a PR move and an attempt to keep that clown boy. Plus they really didn’t have anybody else because no one wanted this job.

Did you miss the part where he said go make the Texans great again?

Why would he say that?
Because DeMeco had chosen to go the coaching route & appeared to be on an upward trajectory.

It's like watching Cj S2roud excel at his position & one his friends (after getting spanked) saying, "Good job man, now go win the Super Bowl."

That doesn't mean the fix is in.

If anything that was the genesis of DeMeco's dream job being in Houston. He may not have even thought about it before that.

Your reasoning doesn’t make sense.

No. It does not confirm anything other than Jj thought Demeco would be an excellent HC one day.
Even as a fan there was a part of me that knew DeMeco would be the next HC. I think most had that feeling. So JJ and DeMeco both being high profile former Texans probably had a little inside scoop.

The Texans still had to put the job application out for legal purposes but they knew who they wanted (and that feeling was obviously mutual).

I understand the excitement but this goes beyond reality. May as well say Cj told Nick to draft Tank.

Not sure if that was meant to be a dig or not, though pretty sure it was, but you seem to have this idea that what is shown in public and officially is everything that goes on. Which is more realistic to you, that the Texans had at least a handshake deal with DeMeco and there was an understanding that he would be the next HC or that Caserio decided to bet his job that he would find someone better and make it known to Lovie before the season was over that there would be a new HC next year even if he had no clue who that was.

Yeah this is a huge offseason for Nick. There's a lot of opportunity there with potential free agency $ (Although I think the vast majority will be used re-signing guys) and a deep draft. As an entire team they need to take the exact same approach they did last season. Draft ready made players and have the expectation that they'll be difference makers early and be clever in free agency - there will be more opportunity there as we're a far more attractive option for free agents than we were last year.

Another year like the one we just had and we'll have a contender rolling for the next several years to come.

The other factor and this is mostly on Demeco is how coaching changes get handled. Should we lose Slowik we really have to make sure the replacement is the right one and he'll likely take some of this staff with him too so we need to be cognizant of those replacements too.

Some posters have issues admitting they're wrong. TK never liked Caserio and is unwilling to eat crow.

As long as the ol coach stays I will be happy.

I could see McDaniels leaving with Slowik.
