Nick Caserio - New GM

I heard Nick this morning and he was emphatic without being cute. Very straightforward answer with no word salad, and I take him at his word. That rumor appears to be bunk.
What I heard on the 610 thing was some version of why fudge would I go back to the Patriots when I have freaking young superstar QB, young head coach I get along with after I made through the spit storm of being the GM of the so-call worse franchise in the NFL?

I like my car. It's not for sale. However, if someone offers me enough (I have no idea how much enough is right now as I haven't thought about it) it's sold.

Imagine if Kraft let's him select who they're going to pick with their first round pick. He hasn't been able to do that since landing in Houston. That alone might be enough.

Who knows?

This is all speculation on my part but Caserio is still under contract as Executive Vice President and General Manager so I believe the Patriots would have to offer him a promotion to get him. I would also think that after the Patriots accused the Texans of tampering when they tried to hire Caserio the last time that the Texans would make it as hard as possible for the Patriots to get Caserio.

Maybe the Texans should sic Hannah on the Patriots. She could probably take Belichick.

Jason La Confora reporting to the Washington Post that Caserio would be open to returning to New England if Belicheck leaves:

I think he sits on a throne of lies. Caserio ain’t going anywhere.
I think we'll hear a lot of rumors and gossip concerning Nick and Slowik. I think caserio remains here and tries to create a dynasty. I would not be surprised at bonuses for a lot of the staff this off season.

I heard that same thing from a different source and I actually believe he’d bolt for NE if given the chance. But the Texans would have to release him from his contract. I personally would do that if NE is his dream job.
let's wait and see if we can get New England to tamper and give us a first round pick.

Why would Kraft want Belichick disciples right after firing Belichick? It makes no sense.

I think Caserio is the kind of dude who wants to be a part of what he's built from the ground up. He's got rings from NE already. Why not stick around and be his own man? There is no history to live up to or huge shoes to fill here.

Nick just made it through prying the Titanic off the ocean floor with it being ready to sail again. Why would he want to go back to a ship that’s currently sinking back down to those depths? I mean unless he really just can’t get past the not liking BBQ thing.

I wouldn’t let him go unless I was getting three firsts. And even then - why would I want to take a chance on another GM just with the possibility of ending up with another Rick Smith?

Caserio has proven his worth to this franchise.

Think about other franchises when they get a solid GM. They don’t trade away that talent. Ravens, Packers, and I would through in the Eagles too.

Caserio is proving to be a talent.
I agree. Now having said that, if the Bears came calling with their two round ones this year and a 2025 round one, I would at least consider that LOL.

Quick change the name of that boat he just brung up! Perhaps we can rename it the Britannica? Or more grandly Olympic?

Never mind I guess we can 'scrap' that idea. 🤣

For those not sure look it up.

He's already part of another good thing he's built here in Houston - why would he want to go back to another team wallowing in the doldrums right now?

I get your point and agree with you that if Kraft offered a blank check then that would be hard to pass up. However from a a football and draft point of view I don't see it being an attractive offer. Ok Kraft lets him draft whoever he wants, doesn't change the fact that Pats need a QB in a very bad way and are picking number at number 3. Washington also needs a QB at 2 and you could argue Chicago does as well. Even if Bears decide to stay with Fields then they are going to be selling number 1 at a high price that a team with as many needs as the Pats are going to be hurting themselves to pay. In Houston Caserio has gotten to wheel and deal with not only Texans pick but Cleveland's to, he would not have that kind of draft capital plus Pats only have 1 million more to spend in FA than we do. On top of that he is going to have to hire another HC and I don't see Kraft lets him hire and fire 3 HCs in as many years seeing as they had to pay out Cully and Lovie contracts.

The 49rs.

Not saying they aren't good but they had a super weak schedule this year. They lost to the Browns, Bengals, Vikings and got destroyed by the Ravens. They also lost to the Rams but that was week 18 and they were already locked so I don't count that one.

Otherwise they feasted on a weak division with Aizona and Seattle both being bad and they played teams like the Commanders. About the only game you can say they looked unbeatable in was the Dallas game in October.

They also lost Slowik and Ryans… yet they didn’t lose too much steam.

The 49ers window is starting to close. They're looking good at QB but they're going to have a difficult time keeping that team together. Their coaching staff has already been picked for years.

I wouldn’t count them out yet. The Rams have turned it around quicker than expected. When you’ve got a great HC. And I believe Lil Shanny and Mcvay are in that category, you got more wiggle room with roster/coaching turnover.

Both teams know how to develop players. Late round picks become studs and that’s not just “luck”.

Do y’all want to talk about speaking too soon about Stingley? I think Casserio did better with last year’s draft than most of us care to admit.

Look at what Nick did with his 2023 Draft trades:

Because he traded the Cardinals the Texans 1st round pick rather than the Browns 1st round pick to Arizona, Houston is now locked in at the 23rd pick rather than 27th or worse as we continue with the playoff run.

In addition, let's not forget that Nick also traded a 2023 4th round pick (which came from Arizona) to Philadelphia for their 2024 3rd. The Philadelphia 3rd is now locked in at the 85th pick, vs the the Texans original 3rd round (traded to Arizona) pick, which is now the 89th or worse pick.

So the the Will Anderson Jr trade shakes out like this:

The Texan's got WA Jr (likely NFL DROY) for:

The Texans 2023 1st round (12th)
The Texans 2023 2nd round (33rd)
The Texans 2024 1st (27th or worse)
Plus the Texans effectively swapped their 2024 3rd (89th or worse) for Philadelphia's 2024 3rd (85th).

Was this a steep price to pay? Yes it was, but not nearly ridiculous as this trade was originally portray as being by the media.

The Texan's of course, still own their own 2024 2nd, so the Texans now have 3 picks in the top 85, plus Will Anderson Jr (likely Defensive Rookie of the year) from last years draft.

So take a bow Nick, you deserve it!!

It was a slow cook for Caserio after what we have been through the last couple of years. But he put everything in the broiler this season and said "watch this!"
Everyone else sees it as slow cooking because he was hustling while he waited on the best HC candidate to become available. That’s why I laughed while everyone melted down after the Culley/Lovie Smith firings. It’s like the fan base has a problem letting go because they end up catching feelings, kinda like women do even when knowing they’re just a side chick, lol. Nick did a hell of a job with the very little he had to work with, not to mention the turmoil he walked into. Any other guy would have panicked and signed the wrong HC and hung onto him for 3-4 years, overpaid for big name players with little left in the tank. Not Nick! Nick had a plan and executed it like a boss!

Ok,

But you don't have a winning record without being a decent team.

Depends what you mean by decent. They had two good wins, not good games but good wins, against Lions and Browns, though Browns had PJ Walker I think at QB, and any other decent team they got destroyed by. Their other wins were 2 against Arizona, 1 against Titans, 1 against Washington, 1 against Giants, 1 against Eagles (late in the season after the Eagles had fallen apart) and 1 against Carolina.

I guess it would be fair to say they were the best of the worst so in that regard they were decent. Personally though to me that kind of decent hurts more than helps because you can't run with the top teams but you're not bad enough to draft a franchise changer (looking at you CJ) without giving up the farm.

Except it looked like the plan failed miserably. Looked like Caserio thought Flores was that guy (which I liked) but then that blew up in their face.

Nobody was "holding on" to Culley or Lovie it's just dysfunctional to fire 3 coaches in 3 years.

Lol. So true.

Nick put on a headset to call plays in his first year and deal with Easterby trying to hire McCown in his second. He built the roster so Demeco could having something to work with. Then they had another great draft. And then Nick had to scour the practice squads and waiver wires to fill a roster depleted by injuries.

The only problem with the plan was Culley not firing Tim Kelly. Culley saw his lottery ticket and cashed out early. That created the whole Brian Flores theory.

Which it would have been Flores vs Gannon but Easterby got involved and made it the Josh McCown show.

Yep, and that's where the Texans were when they had Schaub. Unfortunately that's where the Seahawks are with Geno. Do they still have picks left from the Wilson deal?

Caserio (BDN?) is absolutely fantastic. He has a lot of respect from his coaches and players. Just like the great Ozzie Newsome and EDC, he has a great eye for talent while also showing the underrated ability to relate well to players and staff alike
If he becomes half the GM Newsome was, I'll be ecstatic. Love the moves he has made. Most of his work looks soooo much better in hind-sight (except drafting Kenyon Green).

4D chess.
