NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis February 19-24, 2014

Ehh not a fan. Straight line runner that doesn't make guys miss, can't catch the ball, and doesn't have experience blocking. Reminds me of Shonn Greene.

Cant catch, (understatement) will make Williams undraftable in BOB's offense. Damien Williams is a late rd guy who I think would make a great fit in BOB's offense.

I was a big fan of taking James White (Wisconsin) late, but he's not really under the radar anymore. I really like LaDarius Perkins (Mississippi State) as a passing down back.

If Andre Williams falls to the late rounds I would automatically be opposed to taking him. At the very least I see him as a dependable back that will get you tough yards. Might be a good special teams guy.

I wouldn't touch him early because he lacks dimensions to his game. But he's not an ordinary bruising back. He doesn't simply lower his shoulders and truck people. He has powerful legs which help him slip arm tackles. He's a hard guy to bring down and he runs with some aggression. I don't see that part if his game changing in the nfl.

Thoughts from a week spent at the NFL combine
Back from a week in Indy at the NFL combine. Here are some thoughts from what I saw and heard:

* As I wrote a month ago, Va. Tech QB Logan Thomas is a fascinating case for NFL personnel people. Thomas actually didn't have much quarterbacking experience before arriving at Tech. He was recruited as a tight end. He had a terrific sophomore year but was shaky the past two years as the skill talent around him declined. His accuracy is suspect and his decision-making is too. His physical tools and size are jaw-dropping as NFL folks now can attest. At 6-6, 250, he had the fastest 40 among all the QBs (4.61), the best vertical (35.5), longest broad-jump (9-10) and also most velocity on his throws (60 mph... Pitt's Tom Savage was next at 57 mph I'm told). Having spent a lot of time around Thomas for the past two months for my upcoming QB book, I've found him very easy-going and likable. Of course, the latter two impressions don't necessarily mean he'll impress NFL brass in interviews who are looking for presence and confidence in their QB prospects. Still, Thomas as a developmental project will be very tempting for some NFL teams I suspect.

* Speaking of Evans, Missouri CB E.J. Gaines, who lined up against many of the best WRs in the SEC, called Vandy's smooth Jordan Matthews, not Evans, the top wideout he faced in his career. Like Evans, Matthews has...

* I think if O-linemen worked out later in the week than at the start of the combine more people outside of Indy would've been talking about...

* I don't care about Jadeveon Clowney's relatively low number of reps (21) benching 225. Clowney, again, more than backed up beliefs that he's the Freakiest athlete we've seen in college football in a long time with his 4.53 40 weighing 266 pounds. Clowney basically repped the same number on the bench as two of the NFL's top pass-rushers this year, Robert Quinn and Greg Hardy. And Clowney is even more explosive than they are. I do think his lack of effort at times is cause for concern, but for those saying he is just a workout warrior, keep in mind he averaged 0.67 sacks a game in his college career--only two other active college players were higher in 2013, as South Carolina's Charles Bloom pointed out.

* The D-lineman who had the best week in Indy though was Pitt's Aaron Donald, who was...

The small-school LB that created the most buzz in Indy was Montana's Jordan Tripp...

* I'm a big Darqueze Dennard fan. He's physical and tough and was the closest thing to a lock-down corner as we get in college football, but after watching the DBs group in Indy, I suspect Oklahoma State's Justin Gilbert will be the top corner picked. He measured at over 6-0 and weighed 202 while running 4.37. He also has terrific film.

* Shrinkage is rarely a good thing although in...

* Over the years of doing the Freaks list there's been some skepticism about the validity of some of the testing numbers included in the stories. Thanks to Aaron Aloysius, for the headsup noting the case of Ole Miss WR Donte Moncrief, who last year put up these numbers: 4.44 in the 40, 11-1 broad jump and 39-inch vertical. At the combine, his numbers almost mirrored them: 4.40 in the 40; 11-0 in the broad jump and 39.5 vertical.

* Last note: I don't know how much Mizzou pays strength coach Pat Ivey, but I'm pretty sure whatever it is, the school is getting...

From Walter...

I can confirm Jimmie Ward/DB/Northern Illinois was not cleared to participate in Tuesday's combine workout after being diagnosed with a Jones fracture in his foot. It's considered a mid/small fracture; in a nutshell, I'm told it's a less severe version of what Julio Jones worked out with several years ago. The injury will be resolved with a simple procedure after the NIU pro-day. I'm told Ward, who felt ready to go earlier this week despite being pulled from the workout by combine officials, plans on fully participating in the NIU pro-day next week.

...According to utsandiego.com, Muema showed up at the Florida training facility where he prepared for the combine, putting concern among his family and friends to rest after he proved to be unreachable for several days after leaving Indianapolis. Reportedly, he was wearing the clothes he was issued in Indianapolis for his combine workout....

LOL did he just walk there from Indy or something?

I enjoyed watching Muema play in college but there's some kind of crazy going on in his head and I hope the Texans want no part of it.

Yep, they do a little sleep deprivation at the Combine and that's often when psych issues show up.

Interesting. He's an idiot anyway. He should have stayed in school he was never going to get drafted regardless.

If he stayed another year and worked on football more, including his 40 time he might have got a chance at being drafted for STs then parlaying that into a RB gig in Seattle.

the average draft prospect benches 225 pounds 20 times.

The average 40 time for draft prospects over the last 3 years is 4.75

The average weight of an NFL draft prospect over the last 3 yrs is 243 pounds.

He said that he left the Combine because G-d told him to. As a physician, we look at it this way.............If you talk to G-d, it's prayer. If G-d talks to you (and drugs aren't involved), it's usually Schizophrenia.:hankpalm:

It sounds like a poorly constructed excuse to not do the tests to me.

NFP's Monday Morning M.D.: The Combine is over, but the medical work is not done

The NFL Scouting Combine medical exams have concluded, but the data will continue to be analyzed by the medical staff. A myriad of medical information will continue to pour in. Medical staff will have access to review every diagnostic study online. Often, this means looking more closely at actual MRI images before assigning grades.

In the past, I would begin this detailed analysis on the flight home from Indianapolis. It will take a week or two before final medical grades are assigned to the 335 athletes.

Even then, some of the medical grades will change, as typically 30-40 players are called back to Indianapolis for medical rechecks in early April.

Don't know if this was brought up or how many Rockets fans are here, but Johnny Manziel was with Arian Foster at the Rockets game tonight.. I guess he feels like it's one of those construction jobs, where it's not who u are... but who u know lol

More medical rechecks stuff...

Combine exams revealed #Auburn RB Tre Mason had a bone in his wrist that wasn’t healing properly. Needs surgery, knocks him out of OTAs, etc
Tre Mason ‏@TreMason21
Once again. I WILL NOT be having any type of surgery on my body! Well and healthy. Media is trying to paint a picture!
Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet
Teams have been informed differently.

Per @MoveTheSticks, #Auburn RB @TreMason21’s wrist ailment discovered at Combine shouldn’t affect his stock. Still mid-to-late 2nd rounder.

Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet
Talked to 6 teams on Tre Mason. No one says it hurts his stock at all
Jene Bramel @JeneBramel
Orthopedic hand/wrist specialist told me Mason's bone may have scarred but not fully heal. If so, Mason could re-injure bone more easily.

That doesn't necessarily conflict with Mason's claim that mulitple teams have told him he'd pass their physical.

Am told that at least one team, and likely several, clearly believes Mason needs surgery.

Source confirmed to me yesterday what @RapSheet reported last week: Tre Mason has fractured scaphoid that had not fully healed in February.
