NFL Random Thought of the Day

From rotoworld. Doc can tell us just how bad the Raiders starting RTs shoulder is :(

Raiders released G/T Austin Howard.

This locks in Marshall Newhouse as the Raiders' starting right tackle, making him easily the weakest link on this elite line. Howard, 30, made it through three years of a five-year, $30 million deal and started 39-of-40 games he appeared in for the Silver and Black. He's recovering from offseason shoulder surgery but should be at or near 100 percent. Expect OL-needy teams to give him a call.

For comparison, PFF ranks Austin Howard 66.9 (#52 T). Derek Newton was ranked 67.8 (#50 T).

Texans fans should not be surprised, but Osweiler is out of the starter discussion with the Browns. The Osweiler hype was evidently just that.............hype to help unload an albatross.

Mallett may not set his alarm clock for tomorrow:

Ryan Mallett - QB - Ravens
Ravens QB Ryan Mallett was "intercepted at least five times" in Friday's practice, then lost his cool on the field.

Per ESPN Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley, Mallett "looked awful" filling in for Joe Flacco (back). Hensley observed two other throws that were nearly picked off, and on his final interception, Mallett "threw his white towel in the air," prompting Terrell Suggs to say, "tell (OC Marty Mornhinweg) to tell Mallett to throw to the guys wearing the purple jerseys (on offense)." The Ravens have been considering signing free agent Colin Kaepernick.

In the past 2 days of TC Denver Broncos have already had their second player suffer a significant wrist injury...................linebacker Shane Ray tore a ligament in his left wrist and will have surgery tomorrow....................RB Devontae Booker had surgery to repair a fracture in his left wrist this morning................both will probably miss 6-8 weeks (depending how soon or if they may be able to return to play in a cast).

Blake Bortles - QB - Jaguars
Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said he was "concerned" about Blake Bortles following a poor performance at Saturday's practice.

Bortles was intercepted five times at Saturday's full-pad session including twice by Tyler Patmon, who hasn't played an NFL game since 2015. "I think any time someone doesn't perform to what you want to do, you're concerned about it," said Marrone. "We're going to look at it." Marrone has hinted at hiding Bortles this year behind a run-first attack featuring first-round rookie Leonard Fournette. The Jags reluctantly picked up Bortles' fifth-year option for 2018, though it won't be guaranteed until the first day of the new league year. This could be a make-or-break year for the former third overall pick.

I wonder why we never heard of Osweiller's bad days in camp?

First round Chargers Draft pick Mike Williams sustained a back injury and will be missing at least all of TC.............not a good sign of things to come.

Second round (#35) Seahawks DE Malik McDowell was involved in an ATV accident 2 weeks ago, and has suffered injuries serious enough that he may miss the entire season per his HC. So far, the injuries that have been released include at least a concussion and multiple facial injuries that probably include fractures. He remains in Michigan under close medical care. McDowell missed the last 3 games of last season with a significant ankle injury.

[EDIT: McDowell just a few minutes ago released a statement that he will be rejoining the Seahawks in a couple of days]

The Packers' 3rd round DT Montravius Adams suffered a stress fracture in his foot. But unlike D'Onta Foreman, Adams will probably have a screw inserted instead of trying rehab the fracture.

If Albert retires he has to pay the Jags back millions in signing bonus. This is just another ploy to get his release. He's been trying all offseason.

Injuries mounting for Ravens early in training camp

Jeff ZrebiecContact Reporter
Aug 1, 2017

Ravens coach John Harbaugh had just watched three more of his players leave Tuesday’s practice with injuries, including two who were carted off the field, when he was asked a question that seemed especially pertinent at the time.

“In a quiet moment,” Harbaugh was asked, “do you ever think, ‘What is going on here?’ “

“No, we’re going to be fine,” Harbaugh answered quickly. “We’ve got a lot of good players. We’re going to play football games and we’re the Ravens and we’re going to be a really good team. That’s how we do it.”

By the end of the 2015 season, the Ravens placed a team-record 20 players on injured reserve. Last year, they had 18 players on I.R. Still, the rash of roster losses that the team has sustained, dating back to organized team activities and continuing through the first week of training camp, has been particularly jarring.

They have thinned the team’s depth before preseason games have even started and created potential holes that general manager Ozzie Newsome and the front office are currently working to fill.

Following Monday’s off day in which tight end Crockett Gillmore and cornerback Maurice Canady both underwent knee surgeries – Gillmore is out for the season, according to Harbaugh – the Ravens lost three more players during Tuesday’s practice.

About 45 minutes into the workout, wide receiver Breshad Perriman limped back to the team building alongside head athletic trainer Mark Smith. He tweaked his right hamstring while running a slant route. Undrafted free agent wide receiver Quincy Adeboyejo was taken by cart off the field about 90 minutes later with an apparent back injury.

Rookie fourth-round pick Nico Siragusa became the third player to go down when his left leg was rolled up on when running back Buck Allen dove for the end zone on a goal-line drill. Siragusa was on the ground for a few minutes as the training staff worked on his knee and he was unable to put much pressure on his left leg as he was loaded on a cart.

Sources later confirmed that Siragusa, expected to provide depth on the offensive line, tore the anterior cruciate, medial collateral and posterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee and will be lost for the season.

Harbaugh had no updates on Adeboyejo because he went down late in practice. He did express some optimism that Perriman, who the team hopes emerges into a top-flight receiver this season, won’t be sidelined for long.

“His hamstring tightened up a little bit, so we took him out,” Harbaugh said. “You never know. We’ll see where he’s at, but it didn’t seem serious.”

Each mention of an injury – minor or significant – brings more trepidation with the fan base, which has understandably grown to expect the worst, given the events of the past two months. Since June 1, the Ravens have already lost seven players for the 2017 season to either injury, retirement or suspension. A number of other potential key players, including Flacco, remain sidelined as well. That list includes:

>>Cornerback Tavon Young, the expected starter in the slot after a strong rookie season, tore the ACL in his left knee during an OTA workout on June 1.

>>Tight end Dennis Pitta, the team’s leader in receptions last year, fractured his right hip June 2 during OTAs. He was waived-injured about a week later and his career is likely over.

>>The NFL announced on June 30 that tight end Darren Waller was suspended for at least the 2017 season after he was found in violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.

>>Kenneth Dixon, expected to be the team’s No. 2 running back after serving a four-game suspension to start the season, tore the meniscus in his left knee while working out before training camp. He had season-ending surgery July 26, the day veterans reported to camp.

>>Flacco informed team officials after reporting to the Under Armour Performance facility July 26 that he’s dealing with back discomfort. He remains sidelined although by all accounts, he’s making good progress and should return soon. The offense has struggled mightily in his absence.

>>On the morning of the team’s first training camp practice on July 27, John Urschel informed Harbaugh that he was retiring. Urschel was seen a top competitor for the team’s starting center job.

>>Gillmore landed awkwardly on his right leg after making a reception late in the July 28 practice. Harbaugh announced Tuesday that the tight end had season-ending surgery to repair a torn MCL, becoming the third tight end to be lost for the season in little more than two months.

>>After starring in OTAs and emerging as the likely replacement for the injured Young in the slot corner role, Maurice Canady hurt his knee early in the same workout in which Gillmore went down. Canady had surgery to repair torn cartilage Monday and while Harbaugh said the injury is not necessarily season ending, the cornerback is out indefinitely.

All eight of the above-mentioned players were considered likely 53-man roster guys. Perriman, Siragusa and Adeboyejo joined the list of the walking wounded during Tuesday’s practice. Wide receiver Kenny Bell (hamstring), center Brandon Kublanow (undisclosed) and cornerback Sheldon Price (undisclosed) are also sidelined and Harbaugh said that Bell and Price will both be out more than a week.

“Guys are going to get nicked up. Guys are going to come back. Guys aren’t going to come back. Guys are going to come back next year. It’s the National Football League,” Harbaugh said. “Look all around the league. No, you don’t lament that stuff. You forge ahead. I’m very confident in our guys and the type of team we’re going to have. I’m not worried about it one bit.”

The team’s flirtation with free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick and the rash of injuries have dominated the training camp dialogue. Veteran offensive guard Marshal Yanda said he’s spoken to the team’s younger players about blocking out all the outside talk.

“If you read the media, the sky is falling every day, and we aren’t going to survive until tomorrow,” Yanda said. “I tell them to put the blinders on and control what we can control. We can’t control injuries on the football field. It is a nasty, violent game, where people are going to get hurt, and you don’t want them to get hurt. That is just the nature of the beast.

“What we can do is control our preparation, our attitude and our focus every day. We have to roll with the guys that we have, and the guys that are hurt, we want to get them back as fast as possible.”

Wow

Could that be because of the extreme stress placed because the athletes are bigger and quicker and working harder or is it just a freak thing
I'd say players are pushing their limits to make their team.
An opportunity like that may never come their way again.

This 2013 article still reflects modern thought. Since this article, it has become more and more obvious that players have Less mandated time for formal guided offseason conditioning, with resultant imbalance of opposing muscle group strength development (some overdeveloped, some underdeveloped) leading to incoordinate stresses on the knee joint. Although many ACL ruptures are non-contact, it is probable that these muscle weaknesses and imbalances leave the joints unprepared for the knee stresses of contact. And although the actual rupture is seen with non contact, previous contact may have weakened the ligament enough to complete the damage with one final aberrant sudden stop, twist or misstep. Furthermore, such limited contact practices as has been also mandated by the CBA, almost ensures that the player is less prepared to understand and execute protective techniques.

Just like injuries hat occur to athletes when they try pushing themselves beyond the limits of their bodies in the weight room, and many times because their muscles have not been properly prepared/built up to tolerate those stresses........................a player pushing the limits on the field beyond their body's capabilities at the time will always eventually lead to a bad end.

Ryan Tannehill went down with a knee injury without contact. This is the same knee that he went down with last season, having him miss the last three regular season games and playoff game. At that time, it was reported that he suffered ACL and MCL injuries to that knee. He underwent a stem cell procedure and opted against surgery. Big mistake in an elite NFL player. Partial ACL tears treated conservatively seldom allow avoid extending the tear and completing the rupture
when the player returns to play.........and subsequently ultimately requiring surgical repair anyway.

I suspect that this will end up being ACL rupture #9 in the past week.

Sources: Surgery feared for Ryan Tannehill, but options still on table

The Miami Dolphins now fear quarterback Ryan Tannehill will need season-ending knee surgery, however no decision to have it has been made at this time, according to sources close to the situation.

As second and third opinions await, Tannehill still could decide to rest it for six to eight weeks and try to come back from his knee injury again, sources said.

But the Dolphins are growing increasingly concerned that surgery will be the most viable and likely option as they and their starting quarterback sift through them.

"He's done, I think," one source predicted Thursday night, referring to Tannehill's hopes of returning this season.

But nothing is final, and options still are on the table.

Tannehill must decide whether he wants to wait at least six weeks to let the knee heal and take another shot at playing this year, or go ahead and have the surgery, which would end his season.

The Dolphins recognize they might have to step in and recommend the surgery that Tannehill has avoided since he initially injured the knee last December against Arizona.

One source said Thursday that, because Tannehill did not repair his partially torn ACL during the offseason, his knee was "a ticking time bomb that was going to go off at any time."

It happened Thursday, on a noncontact play, when Tannehill crumbled to the ground while scrambling in practice.

Tannehill underwent an MRI, and now the Dolphins know they will be without him for at least a significant amount of time, and quite possibly the season.

Who steps in?

The Dolphins do have a competent backup in Matt Moore, who took over first-team reps for the remainder of Thursday's practice after Tannehill was hurt. But Moore was prone to some big hits last season that could make him vulnerable to injury, as well.

Sources said that Jay Cutler would be willing to delay his broadcast career at Fox to play for Dolphins coach Adam Gase, who helped him revitalize his career when he was the QB's offensive coordinator with the Bears in 2015. But Cutler plans to consider such a move only if he gets the chance to be the full-time starter (and get starter money) for the entire season. (Cutler views this as the only practical QB job he'd consider at this point, sources said.)

Sources, meanwhile, said Cutler is the one who has the initial interest in playing for Gase, and the Dolphins have not yet gone down that road.

In addition, sources told ESPN's Josina Anderson that Colin Kaepernick's name has been brought up within the Dolphins' front office as potential insurance at the position. Miami owner Steve Ross has shown in recent years to be very open-minded regarding social issues, defending the choices of some Dolphins players last season when they decided to join Kaepernick by taking a knee during the national anthem. Gase, too, is known as a player's coach willing to maintain an open mind on off-the-field beliefs.

Tannehill is coming off his best, most efficient season in 2016, going 8-5 as a starter with a career-best 93.5 passer rating before he suffered the season-ending injury on Dec. 11. Moore went 2-2 while filling in for Tannehill, who didn't require surgery.

"I just saw him kind of buckle and go down. I didn't see any details," offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen said of Tannehill's injury Thursday. "... There was no contact on the play. That was all I really saw."

**************************************************************************************************************************

This is getting a little crazy now. There shouldn't be any debate at this time...............surgery is the only viable option...........a surgery he should opted for last December.

Report: Ezekiel Elliott had hearing with Roger Goodell in late June
August 3, 2017, 9:25 PM EDT

Last week, Deadpan.com reported that Commissioner Roger Goodell has had no involvement in the proceedings related to Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott. Tonight, Michele Tafoya of NBC reported that Elliott had a hearing in late June that Goodell attended.

Per Tafoya, NFL investigators, Goodell (pictured Thursday in Denver with Broncos coach Vance Joseph), and a four-person independent panel participated in the hearing. The four-person panel will make a recommendation to Goodell, who eventually will decide whether to suspend Elliott.

The league didn’t comment on the Deadspin story, either before or after it was published.

Tafoya reported that the league regards the case, arising from domestic violence allegations, as “complicated,” and that it focuses only on the claims made about Elliott last July and nothing that has occurred since then.

Elliott will have a right to appeal any suspension. The league presumably will issue a decision far enough ahead of Week One so that Elliott would be able to exhaust his appeal rights before the season begins on a Sunday night against the Giants.

Tom Brady: Whether I had a concussion isn’t anybody’s business
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 4, 2017, 11:42 AM EDT

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady fielded questions from a group of reporters for the first time since Super Bowl LI today, and when asked about his wife’s claim that he suffered a concussion last year, he declined to answer.

Asked specifically about Gisele Bundchen’s statement that Brady had a concussion during the 2016 season, Brady neither confirmed nor denied it.

“I don’t want to get into things that happened in my past, certainly medical history and so forth, I really don’t think that’s anybody’s business,” Brady said. “There’s people that do worry about that. My wife, my parents, my sisters, people that love me and care about me, but I do the best I can do to come out and be prepared to play mentally and physically and give the game everything I can.”

Brady said he is aware of recent research suggesting that most NFL players suffer some degree of permanent brain damage on the field, but he said he sees benefits to football as well.

“You’re not blind to it as a player,” Brady said. “It’s a contact sport and I think we all understand that. And there’s a lot of great benefits that football brings you. You certainly can be put in harm’s way.”

If Brady did suffer a concussion last season, it wasn’t disclosed publicly and it didn’t cause him to miss any time. That means it wasn’t handled properly, according to the NFL’s concussion protocol, which may be why he’d rather not talk about it.

There have been lots of recent rumors that Osweiler could be reunited with Adam Gase, his Denver OC...........but.........

Stop right there on Brock Osweiler-to-Miami trade speculation

By: Jeff Risdon | 1 hour ago

With the unfortunate news from Miami on quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s knee, multiple media outlets are thinking out loud about the prospects of the Dolphins trading for Browns quarterback Brock Osweiler.

On the surface, it makes a lot of sense. Miami’s coach is Adam Gase, who was Tannehill’s offensive coach in Denver in Osweiler’s half-season of taking the reins for the injured Peyton Manning. Osweiler looked good enough in 2015 to earn a massive free agent payday from the Houston Texans. The systemic familiarity is a nice selling point.

It’s also becoming more evident with each passing practice in Cleveland that Osweiler will not be the starter for the Browns. He’s yet to get first-team reps in a week of training camp despite being the most experienced quarterback on the roster. He’s also the only one to even play in a playoff game, let alone win one…and Osweiler’s best game in his otherwise regrettable season in Houston was their Wild Card round win over Oakland.

Yes, there is definite need in Miami for QB help. Yes, it does not appear Osweiler is part of the Browns’ plans, no matter what Hue Jackson says on the matter right now. It sure seems convenient.

(Puts on Meatloaf’s “Paradise by the Dashboard Lights”)

Stop right there. Before we go any further…

Osweiler’s astronomical salary ($16 million in 2017) would require the Browns to eat a significant portion before any other team would agree to get beyond second base in trade talks.

Miami, which seems the most willing suitor, would use up nearly all of its current available salary cap space to bring in Osweiler as a one-year rental. The Dolphins would certainly ask the Browns to cover a big chunk of that, or else Miami would be handcuffed from making other moves as other needs invariably, inevitably pop up.

Cleveland does have room to eat some of Osweiler’s deal, but their counter will be for more compensation in return.

(Do you love me? Will you love me forever?)

The Dolphins won’t want to sacrifice future assets for a player they hope isn’t needed on the roster after this year. Nor should they. They also know Cleveland already extracted a second-round pick out of Houston to take on Osweiler. The Browns are not likely to be doubly blessed with Osweiler deals.

Keep in mind this is a quarterback on his third team in as many summers and is currently third-string behind a soft-armed naif and a second-round rookie coming off a bad college season.

(So now I’m praying for the end time…so I can end my time with you)

There are other obstacles here too. Colin Kaepernick’s availability is a prominent one. Jay Cutler’s willingness to listen to an offer is another. Matt Moore’s relative competence as a fill-in starter in Miami matters too. Moore has proven more accurate, more careful with the ball and posts a better career yards-per-attempt rate (7.2 to 6.2) than Osweiler despite playing most of his Miami career with lesser offensive firepower than Osweiler had in Denver and Houston.

Maybe if Osweiler only cost $6 million and not $16 million. Maybe if he were impressing in camp in first-team reps. Maybe if he had a better track record as both a passer and a leader. Maybe then, someone would offer the Browns a conditional draft pick for his services.

There is no paradise in the Browns’ dashboard with Osweiler.

Jimmy Garoppolo stinks it up in first 2017 scrimmage
August 5, 2017, 12:47 PM EDT

It’s not quite yet time to send #Tommy floating on a sheet of ice.

Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, heralded as the real deal and suspected by some to be the potential choice to succeed Brady as soon as 2018, had a rough time at a scrimmage on Friday. Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald describes the performance as “woeful.”

Garoppolo completed 14 of 36 passes (38.8 percent), leading his team to four field goals in nine drives.

Yes, Garoppolo didn’t have a star-studded cast of supporting characters. He nevertheless didn’t get it done, and to a certain extent it’s on him.

“You’re never happy about the incompletions, interceptions or anything like that, but it’s training camp,” Garoppolo said, via Howe. “We’ll learn from those situations. We always go back, watch the film, and just diagnose what happened and what we could do to fix that.”

Plenty of fixins may be needed before Garoppolo is ready to be the week-in, week-out option, especially since he wasn’t able to get through his four-week audition healthy in 2016.

*******************************************************************

A more fair interpretation. Not a great testament..........but a more fair interpretation. Either way, the sample is too small to make a conclusion from.

Patriots notebook: Jimmy Garoppolo woeful in first scrimmage
Jeff Howe Saturday, August 05, 2017

FOXBORO — Jimmy Garoppolo had a woeful performance yesterday during the first intrasquad scrimmage of training camp.

The Patriots backup quarterback completed 14-of-36 passes and orchestrated four field-goal drives in nine possessions while his team fell, 20-12, to the group that was led by Tom Brady and Jacoby Brissett. Brady’s offense scored on all three possessions before he departed in the second quarter with a 13-3 lead.

To be fair, Garoppolo wasn’t exactly playing with the first-team offense. Running back Dion Lewis (six catches) was Garoppolo’s most prominent teammate, and tight ends Matt Lengel and Jacob Hollister were the only others who could ultimately crack the 53-man roster next month.

On the flip side, Garoppolo’s offense competed against the backup defense, so they had a level playing field. And Garoppolo’s greatest issue was that he had too many contested passes. Undrafted rookie cornerback D.J. Killings (three pass breakups), cornerback Justin Coleman (two), undrafted rookie safety Jason Thompson (two) and undrafted rookie corner Kenny Moore (one) combined to swat aside eight passes.

“You’re never happy about the incompletions, interceptions or anything like that, but it’s training camp,” Garoppolo said. “We’ll learn from those situations. We always go back, watch the film, and just diagnose what happened and what we could do to fix that.”

Garoppolo has been inconsistent in his fourth training camp, though the cries of his demise have been tremendously exaggerated. He has only completed 59.0 percent of his passes and has six interceptions in team drills (7-on-7s and 11-on-11s).

Garoppolo has had more good days than bad among the Patriots’ first eight practices, but he has sprinkled in some interceptions (two picks among his 12-of-16 performance in the second practice, for example) that overshadowed some of his better workouts.

“I think I’m going in the right way,” Garoppolo said. “It’s a grind. You’re trying different things, trying new plays. You’re with new guys, and there’s a lot of variables that go into it. But as long as we’re learning and progressing, we’ll be all right.”

The other caveat: Garoppolo’s summer struggles have been well-documented, from the practices in 2014, to the preseason games in 2016. He dismissed the notion that he is better when it matters, but the results are what they are.

“I try to come out and perform the same every day, whether it’s game, practice, whatever it may be,” Garoppolo said. “I don’t know what it is. It just seems to work out that way.”

No timetable yet on Joe Flacco's return, John Harbaugh says

12:15 AM CT
  • Jamison HensleyESPN Staff Writer

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens haven't been given a definitive return date for injured quarterback Joe Flacco, coach John Harbaugh said Saturday night.

"We know he's getting better every single day," Harbaugh said after the Ravens' practice at Navy. "Obviously, we have a plan for him, football-wise, when he gets back. But we haven't been told when yet."

Doctors told Flacco and the Ravens that he would need about a week of rest in order to recover from a back injury.

Harbaugh said last week that he is confident that Flacco will be back long before the end of the preseason. On Wednesday, Harbaugh said all indications from Flacco and trainer Mark Smith have been "very positive."

With Flacco out, Ryan Mallett has been working with the first-team offense. The Ravens signed inexperienced quarterbacks David Olson and Josh Woodrum because it has always been believed that Flacco would be out for only a short period.

In his only comments about the injury, Flacco said on July 28 that he was unsure when he would return to practice.

"Hopefully not too long, but at the same time, it is kind of a waiting game," Flacco said. "It is just one of those things where you have to be patient and not let your competitive nature get the best of you. I am talking about everybody -- myself and, really, everybody."

************************************************

Everyone's "confident." I would not want to be Flacco or the Ravens going into the season. From all descriptions, this is not a muscle strain, but rather a disc problem. "A week" recovery was never a reasonable prediction.

Sounds like the Browns are just trying to keep Osweiler in the "conversation" in order to boost trade value.

No clear leader in Browns’ three-way quarterback race
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 6, 2017, 5:50 AM EDT

Cody Kessler opened training camp as the Browns’ starting quarterback, but he hasn’t done much to keep the job.

Kessler has struggled in camp, opening the door for either veteran Brock Osweiler or rookie DeShone Kizer to take the starting job. But it’s unclear which one of those two is in the lead.

ESPN say indications are that Osweiler will start the first preseason game. But the Akron Beacon Journal reports that coach Hue Jackson hinted that Kizer will get promoted to the first string this week and start Thursday night’s preseason opener.

Jackson has said he’ll take his time determining a starter for the regular season. It may take the entire preseason for someone to emerge as the leader in this three-man race.

CB Jalen Collins has been issued a 10-game suspension for violating the NFL's Performance Enhancing Drugs policy but is expected to be available against the Buccaneers on November 26. Interesting to note that he failed multiple drug tests in college (he was projected as a high 1st round pick, but after this, he dropped to the 2nd round).........and was suspended last season for 4 games for the same reason as this recent suspension. I hope this young man gets some help.

Ankle scare for Sammy Watkins
Posted by Mike Florio on August 6, 2017, 8:48 PM EDT

The good new is that Sammy Watkins currently isn’t having any foot problems. The Bills receiver narrowly avoided some bad news on Sunday.

Watkins suffered “kind of just a lie ankle twist” while running a pass route on Sunday.

He said he’ll “probably ice” the ankle and he’ll be fine. “I’ll be out there tomorrow,” Watkins said.

It was the same leg in which he had repeated foot problems, but he said the foot wasn’t affected.

“I just had a scare,” Watkins said. “I just kind of rolled it a little bit, stopped it, and then came back out here running routes, so I was fine.”

The Bills are hoping that Watkins will be better than fine all year along. Watkins surely hopes the same thing happens, given that the Bills didn’t pick up his fifth-year option. Which makes 2017 a contract year for him.
******************************************************************************************************************

This could very well be a sign that he is having trouble with his Jones fracture again..............adjusting his ankle position to compensate. This was not caused by someone else rolling up on his ankle............seems like a proprioception-like problem (determining the position of your foot in space) that can be caused by incomplete rehab and/or ongoing foot pain.

Jay Cutler was placed on IR the beginning of last December for a shoulder injury. He subsequently underwent a right shoulder labrum repair. As he announced his retirement from the NFL to head for the broadcasting booth, it will be interesting if he's maintained his conditioning (doubtful) and how he will fare as a result of his throwing arm shoulder injury. The Dolphins may have traded off one problem with another equally concerning.
