State of the O-line

Rankin is getting dogged by the guys on 610. Saying he looks like he should be on the cut list. So the guy that was supposed to take a step up this year is looking like a cut candidate. Both OTs from this years draft are fighting for OG minutes and Martin has yet to show. Great!!! Could our line actually be even worse this year? It’s looking like that’s a real possibility. Call Washington NOW and offer a first next year for Williams. This is ridiculous.

Khalil scary
Howard rookie but still should be an upgrade
Martin????
Scharping looks terrible so far so most likely Fulton here again.
Henderson scary.

So Davenport, Scharping, Rankin are all looking like busts. I know it’s to soon to judge Sharping but dam at what point does OB come to the realization that our OL coaches aren’t developing our young talent?

Totally agree, get Williams in here pronto, They need to stop playing around with Watson's health and get him the protection he needs to become 49ers Steve Young instead of Tampa Steve Young.

I think Scharping could develop into a fine player with good coaching. Too bad that's not going to happen over on Kirby and if the terrible OL play continues BOB should be fired due to his loyalty to Devlin.

If they are looking to set there starting 5 as Pat stated then Martin is not going to be starting. I wonder what's wrong with Martin?

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/nick-martin?id=2555189

I think these things are on the money . The good news is they have other options because Clint Stoerner says you can help a bad OT , but a bad C/G will get exposed every time .

WEAKNESSES
Looks labored in his movement. Stiffness in hips stymies ability to sink and anchor. Leads with upper body too often and plays with weight out over his feet. Needs to bring his feet up under him. Had issues redirecting with power against pass rushers who gained early advantage. Gets jostled around and has to work overtime to stay engaged against powerful players. Will struggle to reach and secure move blocks. Can improve with recognition of blitzes.

"He was much more athletic before his knee injury. He's had to fight through some physical limitations and I know that he's been frustrated because of that. He struggled in 2014 and I thought he still looked a little beat up this year. If he can get healthy, he'll start in our league." -- NFC North scout

It’s obvious to us that we need to set the wheels in motion and do what we can to get Williams, but does O’Brien have the guts to pull that move off? History says no, unfortunately.

True and with the FO being in a state of disarray I don't expect them take any trades.

Veteran Offensive Lineman Challenged
When the Texans selected Tytus Howard and Max Scharping this past NFL Draft, the organization envisioned the young duo's long-term potential. More than that the organization wanted to get more athletic on the interior to combat a growing trend of interior pass rushers that are just as athletic and powerful as edge rushers.

Howard and Scharping are pushing last season's starters Senio Kelemete and Zach Fulton for their starting roles. Howard appears to have a stranglehold on the starting left guard position while there is a camp competition brewing at the right guard position between Fulton and Scharping.

The Texans want to get Howard and Scharping on the field and earn their stripes on the field. They might not wait too long to get both rookies on the field start on the offensive line.

  • OL Martinas Rankin continues to put together solid work a guard. Only in his second season, this is his first extended work at the guard position learning and playing the position. Rankin is pushing for one of the primary backups behind the starting group

It's funny how Rankin is an afterthought after he was seen as the starting LT after the draft last year. Now he's maybe a backup guard.

That's how the draft goes. Could be the same for Tytus and Max.

Texans see 'good future' for rookie lineman Max Scharping

During a single practice, rookie offensive lineman Max Scharping showed why the Texans have high hopes for him.

Besides lining up at center, offensive guard and offensive tackle since the start of training camp, the second-round draft pick and former 3.99 grade point average student from Northern Illinois has displayed a resilient nature.

Scharping has been able to hold up against power moves, walling off inside rushers when he's played guard.

Where he struggled Monday was dealing with the speed and polished moves of three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year defensive end J.J. Watt.

Scharping didn't let the setbacks faze him, though, and kept practicing his footwork to correct his mistakes.

"I think it's a hard jump when you come from Northern Illinois to the Houston Texans and, believe me, I have all due respect for Northern Illinois," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said of Scharping, who was a finalist for the William V. Campbell trophy for academic and football accomplishments. "But you're lining up across from D.J. Reader and J.J. Watt. Against guys like that, it's a big jump. But Max approaches every day in a very mature way.

"He's a very mature guy who works very hard. We're moving him around. He's played center, He's played guard. He's played tackle. He's a smart guy, works extremely hard. We see a guy who has a good future."

I fully expect massive improvement on the OLine this year. They don't have to all be pro bowlers, but average is the floor for my expectations. Earn your paycheck coaches.

I don't see Rankin as an afterthought. This time of year for our roster players will be looked at for different positions to get best five ready for game one. I doubt anyone knows exactly what we have or where they will play.

I don't think he should be an afterthought. But he was drafted in the 3rd round last year to start possibly at tackle. They realized that wouldn't work so moved him to guard.

So why isn't he pushing for a starting guard spot? After a year he has some experience and I don't see why Scharpring is a better prospect

I think at the end of 2018 season Rankin was looking good. Personally I feel Kelemete is own way out. Howard may be better LG than Rankin. Let's see. Same with Scharping

Howard was clearly a higher tier prospect who can play tackle. But Rankin should be better than Scharpring with a year under his belt and both having been drafted in the 3rd

Awright that's what I'm talkin about !
Where's that poster from above, Mussop, get down and read this 'cause don't think we will need release the entire Oline roster just yet with these kind of results.
But i'm really looking forward to the first preseason game next week to get a glimpse of these guys in pads, on the field in a real game.

we just don't know yet. I believe
Scharping better on right side. I understand Scharping is playing Center and to the right. Rankin left guard. So far, not cancelling each other.

This is only the only training camp analysis we have so far .

With this kind of logic, Jamarcus Russell should clearly be the better QB because he has a year under his belt and was drafted #1 overall. Hell, Ryan Leaf and 3 quarters of the 20 QBs the Browns have drafted should be better.

Signed,
Arian Foster and Tony Romo

So Rankin is now a bust? He was only drafted last year.

Just saying they had similar projections. They were both guys who could become starters. If anything Rankin was considered the better prospect.

Maybe a different post.

Just like BO'b has a tendency to scrap his whole offseason program by halftime week 1, there has been no continuity in building an OL since BO'b got here. Bigger, faster, stronger, power run game. Then we bring in Lamar Miller. We get TEs familiar with ZBS, we draft Rankin to be a LT, move him to guard. We draft a LT prospect, skipping all the Guards & Centers... then sign an oft injured veteran to play the position for a year.

& they don't seem to recognize a problem at Center.

If we actually move Howard & Scharping out to tackle next season I'll really be shocked. Two years back to back with the same plan? Not going to happen.

If they are serious about paying Matt Kalil $7.5M to play & not consider bringing Trent Williams in for $10M in 2019....

I'm sorry. I don't know what just happened there. I think I'm late for my tequila shots.

I agree with you. Just saying Sharping was our third pick, our 2nd second round pick. Not a 3rd.

But Rankin has played against guys who weren't on the Texans payroll & did a pretty good job.

But they're going to find a spot on the starting OL for their 1st & 2nd round picks.

Ah you're right. Scharpring is a second rounder

Henderson solidifying

Right tackle Seantrell Henderson was a player, despite his history, I believed in coming into last season. Then he was lost for the year in game one. With hopefully a full camp ahead of him, Henderson seems to be the favorite for the right tackle spot. He had a couple of rough reps against J.J. Watt today but found himself a victory before the day was over against Watt. Not saying Henderson can't be caught at right tackle, but he's in the lead now.

Paying for your mistakes

Tytus Howard had a false start today and was then shown to the sidelines for the mistake. Hard to tell on Howard's overall performance today, but he held his own on more than a few snaps. He's not struggling regularly which is a good sign.

You’ve witnessed some live action?? Man, does Rankin look as bad as they’re making it seem? Or, is the competition this year that much better?

No I wish. Just seems to be the common theme from the journalist reports that the rookies are holding their own.

I haven't read anything on Rankin other than a poster here saying 610 was criticizing him. Not much on any OL except the rookies and Kalil

So you think the Oline coachs should have the 2019 OLine draft picks coached up, developed, and ready to play by the 5th day of their of inaugural TC ?
Not at all. I’m just saying we spent our two biggest draft assets and drafted these guys as OTs, our weakest spot on the team and now both are not even sniffing OT. Our OT positions are going to be a major problem and yet neither of these guys seem to even be a backup plan there. Our OL isn’t shaping up and looking like it will improve.

Just another fluff piece. I’m going off what people are saying that are at the practices. So far that’s Rankin looks like he could be cut and Scharping hasn’t impressed at all. Sorry I’m drinking the cool aid. I want them to be good but I’m not going to bury my head in the sand by reading fluff articles and pretending everything is ok.

I’m going to go off live reports from people that really watch what’s going on.

Problem with Texans getting Williams, beyond any issues with the Texans themselves, is that I'm not sure Washington would let him go even for a first. Any other team I'd agree they'll go for it but the skins have a bad habit of cutting off their nose to spite their faces. Even just two days ago they doubled down that everything is fine and Williams will be back. I've also seen that this has gotten personal between Allen and Williams so I would not put it past him at all to make Williams ride out his contract just to cost him two years of money. Almost none of Williams money is guaranteed so, other than losing a great player, the skins aren't out much if they do make him ride it out and he doesn't show up to play. Even after that two years of not playing and being two years older is going to make other teams be very careful with any contract they offer Williams. Ugly situation all the way around.

Well I think your comments are very premature, and you should wait until these guys have got a couple preseason games under their belt.

I don't have a problem with this because you can help a tackle easier than you can an interior lineman.

Because Scharping is just as big/strong and has as good if not better feet than Rankin. Plus Scharping is a really good technician.

Where did I say he wouldn't be fine? In wondering why our third round pick from last year is only competing to get a backup guard spot when they were hoping he'd be a starting LT last year

Apparently Howard/Scharping are already better than Rankin.

Competition is a good thing.

thanks for the input. How did that work out for Houston with Duane Brown? In my opinion same scenario Brown returned, played for approximately 1/2 Season, Eventually was traded to Seattle with new contract. Indeed it is a sad situation but one that could benefit Texans this time.

I don't recall any analysts saying scharping would be a possible starting left tackle this season. Although he did play left and right tackle in college as I posted during last year's College season, he was projected to be right tackle or Right Guard backup by all IIRC.

Yes that's right. It is Rankin who they said maybe could play tackle, turned out no. Scharpring maybe can play RT. We'll see.

Let's not act like every 2nd round player works out good peeps. All because Scharping was drafted in the 2nd doesn't mean he's going to be fine. Yes he has a 50/50 chance of being good. But we better hope Delvin and Obrien finally learnt how to coach these players up.

When we drafted him several media heads at that time said he can play multiple positions, Left Tackle being one of them.
