The Plan for Tytus Howard and Max Scharping
There will be plenty of onlookers disappointed that Tytus Howard could not be the starter at left tackle when the season opens up week one. The Texans are moving the direction to start Howard at left guard next to Matt Kalil at left tackle and Nick Martin at center. It appears the long-term plan is having Howard taking over the left tackle position at a later time. The Texans want to get Howard on the field in 2019 and in a position that he can succeed. Howard is an upgrade at that position over last season's starter Senio Kelemete and fill-in Martinas Rankin.
As for Max Scharping, the same idea is in place to have him work at right guard and compete with Zach Fulton with him moving to right tackle when the time is right.
The Texans want to go in with the veteran options at the offensive tackle positions to start the season, barring health issues, with both Howard and Scharping in place to be the long-term options for the future.
Getting both Howard and Scharping experience on the field is vital for the Texans but in a controlled situation inside seems to be their plan. Not outside on island against top-end pass rushers that could ultimately hurt players mentally and their development like they did with Julién Davenport and Martinas Rankin last season.
Howard has Bounce Back Day
Yesterday was a rough day for the rookie from a heat and conditioning day, more like a baptism of sorts. Howard held up in one-on-ones against Joel Heath who usually can push offensive line off their spots. Heath could not budge Howard. During team drills, Howard picked up a twist involving Watt and held him at bay during the pass rush.
Howard looked much more under control than he did yesterday, even though it might have been heat and the first day of pads related. Either way, it was a good bounce-back day for the rookie.
OL
Max Scharping is still adjusting to NFL speed and power. Moments he gets it, and then today he had trouble slowing DE
Carlos Watkins during pass rush drills. Scharping later in team drills had solid work during the first-team defense protecting Deshaun Watson

I don't see how Tytus is better than Senior right now while he's struggling to adjust
