Good point. It appears the Colts coaching staff made adjustments and their players played/executed better.
So, again it gets backed to being outcoached and outplayed.

Want to make a bet? PM me, I will give you 2 more yrs. That will make 3 yrs total since he's been gone. Fair enough?
Ever heard of a soft landing for a CEO of a major company? Happens all of the time.
But you're right, Smith is the kind of person I dont care for. He's a faker IMHO.

I know this could be true, but a confident GM would've said we're picking David Johnson.
That didn't happen enough and poof Ricky is finally gone.
I disagree. A good GM takes in everyone's feedback and makes decisions based on that feedback (along with his own opinions). A bad GM acts as a dictator and does what he wants, regardless of the feedback. I mean the whole reason we hired Gaine was because supposedly Gaine & BOB are more "aligned". If you want Gaine to be more of a dictator style GM, then we got the wrong guy.
You put in the work to know what you're looking at, listen to others take their opinions into account, then make a decision. It's your job on the line.
Name calling?

It's been utter mediocrity ever since Rick forced a re-signing of post- lisfranc Shaub on kubiak. That was followed by hiring an incompetent coach without interviewing anyone else
Ya’ll throw this outcoached term around a lot & ya’ll really have no clue of what the colts or Texans are doing in that department.
Most coaches will tell u that A team you’re facing for the 3rd time...there are no new wrinkles, plays or anything that u can show them they haven’t already seen. So imo coaching really had nothing to do with us getting our **** pushed in. The Colts are clearly more talented than us and the players just out-executed us between the white lines...period.
I agree that the players needed to execute better, but at the same time, coaches are a big factor regardless of how many times they've played each other. Coaches make alot of decisions that factor into the outcome of the game. I don't know if BOB got "outcoached", just know that the Texans got beaten rather convincingly, and I don't agree with the Colts being "clearly more talented". It is debatable, but I personally prefer the Texans talent.
I didn’t care for BoB’s decision to go for it on 4th down so early in the game on DW4’s int...but at the same time I understood it. He’d just watched his defense get shredded on 2 straight drives and it was pretty clear early on in that game that they weren’t gonna be able to stop the Colts....that’s the only instance where I can look and say coaching had an effect.
Beyond that, it was mostly the players failing on execution that killed this game.
The colts have the better qb, o-line and defense.
Literally the only thing talent wise we have over them is nuk....but when u factor in TY straight owning us, that’s not even that much of an advantage.
This may come across as smart ass but I do have a question on this. Correct me if I'm wrong but you are saying that Smith should have had the confidence to tell BoB no that is not a good pick we are going with Johnson. In the past, however, you have said that part of Smith's, and the Texans, problem was that he was not giving BoB the players he wanted and was just picking what he (Smith) wanted.
So if I understand you then Smith should pick the players that BoB wants as long as they are good picks but if they are not then he should overrule BoB correct? That would be a very sweet gig for BoB, if the player is good you get credit for picking them and if they are bad you can say that you got overruled.
In reality I don't think either of these was the case but I'm just trying to understand your view point on what a GMs job actually is. Should they try to get the coaches the players they want or should they pick what they feel are the best choices and then tell the coaches to make it work?
I prefer the talent on our defense, receivers, running backs. We obviously differ in opinion here, so not worth getting into a long debate about.
Not really. I think that post just wants some clarity because you tend to contradict yourself alot. This post points out the dysfunction in the org.
As Cak would say, we don't know what was going on in the org. What we should know is after over a decade Ricky wasn't bringing a championship to Kirby.
Call thinks Gaine and BOB can and what we think doesn't really matter.
That comment was in direct response to the Colts... not any other team left in the playoffs.Look at the teams left in the playoffs ol and get back to me.

dittoIf you can't see the difference in talent then we Can't discuss this.

One of the things that cracks me up about this never ending Smith vs O'Brien discussion is the people who ignored that O'Brien was a very inexperienced coach and was brought in based on his past experience with the Patriots and Belichick's system. Were the McNairs suppose to hand him the keys to the organization and Smith should have just handed personnel decisions to him?
Offense was suppose to be his strong suit and he has been unable to field anything close to a respectable offense. This is the same coach who appears to struggle being the HC and play caller, yet they were suppose to add personnel to his responsibilities? Exactly what has O'Brien accomplished to deserve that much control over the organization?
With that said, it's great that he now has a yes man for his GM. But, answer this question. Besides Belichick and the Patriots, how many teams have their front office structured where the HC has control of personnel or the GM reports to the HC?
The Colts are clearly more talented than us and the players just out-executed us between the white lines...period.
Guess whats gonna happen next year............ same ole ****!
This team cannot compete against good teams. BOB does not have it. He cannot scheme against the better coaches.
Critical games and he fails. Not gonna change.
When you say this, it's like you're saying the Colts offense is more talented than our defense. Which is not the case. We have 8 of the 11 defensive starters picked in the first or 2nd round.
Our offense also has as much talent as their defense. Talent wise it should have been a wash. But three scores on their first three possessions... then for us to score only once the remainder of the game, I think it is you who has no clue what it means to be out coached.
On that Saturday, the Colts had much more talent on the field
Or perhaps more accurately their players were playing at their talent level more than ours were.
I put that on the coaches mostly. Texans did not have a good game plan
They had a game plan?
Seriously, OB's idea of trickery is open every game with a run, get to the playoffs and toss a bomb? Yeah, nobody saw that coming.

There's no winning with you guys.
The way you should look at things is both teams were playing at their talent levels and we now know how far the Texans need to go to become true contenders. Obviously the more talented team won that game and some Texans fans are having trouble dealing with that.

Sorry, but the first two games were close, the Texans talent is close, but they didn't play that way that day. Watson had his worst day as a pro, and the defense had no answer for Luck
And why should we ignore coaching?
We shouldn't ignore anything,
Playoffs are a whole different situation.
I listened to Clint Stoener yesterday and he pointed out some of the defenses that fooled Watson.
Then you can't assume the players were playing to their talent level.
Then you can't assume the players were playing to their talent level.
Watson had plays to make... he just couldn't hit the broadside of a barn that day
And I dont care how good the rest of the team plays or the coaches coach, when this happens the Texans aren't winning that game.
Defense didn't help take any pressure off... extending drives with silly penalties on the first two for a quick 0-14 hole

Wait, what? So you are saying that Watson, Watt, Clowney and Mercilus, just to name a few, were playing at their talent level? If that's the case then we are in full rebuild mode because everyone on the team sucks. It doesn't take an entire team of all pros, at least it shouldn't, to win a game even a playoff game and yes even a SB. Pretty much every winning team since the dawn of football has had a few star players and then most of the rest are just "good enough". I agree that several spots on the Texans, particularly the O Line, don't rate good enough but even our star players were barely at "good enough" level while the Colts star players were looking like stars.
In my opinion we are not near as far away from being contenders as you seem to think. They mostly need an O line that can actually give Watson time to find a receiver without having to scramble 2 seconds into the play, a bit more depth at WR so if Fuller goes down its not back to the days of double team Nuk or, God forbid, Nuk goes down where we might as well just take Watson off the field because whats the point, somebody, anybody, on defense that can actually cover a WR, an OC that doesn't approach every game like he is insane, you know that whole doing the same thing over and expecting different results and a DC that remembers that the other team does more than just run the ball.
All of these things can be fixed or at least improved within one off season if the GM and HC are worth all the zeros on their pay check. Its why I said BoB deserves another year to show that he can do something with the team. But lets not make it sound like this is a team with little to no talent, this is a team that plays harder but not smarter than other playoff teams and that is on the coaches. The fact is that in the game against the Colts they didn't even look like a high school team, they looked like some backyard flag football team and the coaches, all of them, looked like they were picking plays using a magic 8 ball.
From Cal McNair on down
