Brown vs Staley

It'd be a toss-up, but my guess is that Staley would probably be the pick just looking at 40 times.

But who knows what the tape says, because I have seen none on Joe Staley.

I dunno Earl. first you tell me how many Haynesworth shots Matt has left in the tank ?

And this means what Pete ?

I think I would take Brown over Staley . I think he has less bust factor because he played in a good conference plus he's a little thicker .

I would most certainally take Brown a 3rd and 6th over the 7th pick in this years draft that they gave the Pats for Staley

I would most certainly take Brown with a 3rd and 6th over the 7th pick in this years draft that they gave the Pats for Staley

Yeah, that's pretty much the way I'm thinking too. The Niners gave up lot for a guy who wasn't going against elite competition. At least with Brown, you know he's had to consistently go against Mario Williams, Phillip Merling, Chris Long, and Calais Campbell.

And against Chris Ellis in practice plus against Jackson from LSU who is projected as a top 5 player in the 09 draft.

Wait a minute. I thought we drafted Reggie Bush? Who is this Brown? Anyway, I am going back to sleep. Wake me at kick off, please.

Staley was clearly the higher rated (by draft services) prospect coming into the NFL. Yes we've heard all the expert "reach" comments concerning Brown or for the 49ers giving up a #1 pick (08-#7th overall selection) to trade up. from a value standpoint Duane Brown is clearly the winner, I've listened to all these so called experts but rarely if ever do they mention how important the mental make-up is in the process & I'm not talking about wonderlick. its about the mental toughness to challenge yourself to get better while taking the abuse/coaching from Gibbs.

If Gibbs was with the Texans last year would he have enough influence to tell Kubiak/Smith to pass on a potentially great interior linemen for a potentially great Left Tackle? we'll never know, I think it worked out pretty fine assuming Schaub is fully recovered, now its Amobi's turn to :lion:

saw this and since its the most recent brown thread....

54… That’s the number of sacks given up by Virginia Tech in the 2007 college football season, compared to 29 the previous year. The guy manning the all-important left tackle position for the Hokies last season? Duane Brown – the former tight end who was probably as shocked as anyone to hear his name called by the Houston Texans in the first round of the NFL Draft. Athletic he may be, but Brown is still a huge reach. The guy is as raw as they come and needs to get much stronger to be truly effective at the position. The biggest worry for me if I’m Houston is not the lack of strength (that is to be expected for a converted tight end), it’s the fact that Brown struggled against speed rushers in college. That should not be the case for one so athletic. This could prove to be a bad move for the Texans and Brown is probably already feeling the pressure to perform at a high level.

When did he play against Mario? FWIW - he did play against some top talent as listed, but he also struggled in those matchups. Check the numbers. He shut no one down and those guys all got over on him. I think each guy had a sack and some TFL in the matchup. That aint exactly 1st Round grade production. Hopefully the coaching staff can do something with this prospect because he looks to have the physical tools but does he have the skill set, heart, and desire?

sure hope so, because its obvious the Texans had him highly coveted as other teams have also expressed post-draft

Some background on these numbers: the Hokie offensive line was in a state of flux early in the season--their starting RT (Ed Wang) was hurt, so they played some players (but not Brown) out of position to cover. The line played terribly until Wang returned and everyone else went back to their regular spots. In particular, Glenn Dorsey ate the interior line alive when LSU mauled the Hokies early on--but he was not the only one: ECU and Ohio (University, not State) gave the Hokie offense fits.

To make matters worse, VT alternated between a human statute (Sean Glennon) and their requisite Michael Vick clone (true frosh Tyrod Taylor) at QB. Glennon settled down and played well as the season went on, but he has about zero pocket presence. As for Taylor, scrambling is about the only thing he could do consistently, and he ran himself into quite a few sacks.

Now, I don't have the numbers on how many sacks were attributable to Brown (I've seen someone post 8.5 here). Chris Long got him twice, but on one of them, Brown was clearly expecting help from his LG but none was coming.

Still, the Hokie OL and overall offense improved dramatically as the year went along. They backslid in the bowl loss to Kansas, but (file this tidbit away "for entertainment purposes") the Hokies are invariably a disappointing bowl team.

We have some work to do with Brown, but the kid as all the tools. If we can squeeze one more year out of Salaam, we may have LT solved for a long, long time.

The VT QB situation was not a good one, but Brown did not play well this year. Granted, the entire offensive line was poor, but he did not play any better than those around him. It's not as if Brown was a "bright spot" on a poor line. As I stated in a different thread, Brown (and the entire VT offensive line) was embarrassed all night by the Kansas defense that saw 1 single defensive player drafted, and he wasn't from the front 7. Kansas isn't stashing a ton of NFL caliber underclassmen that got the best of Brown either. I'm using the Kansas game as an example because I remember it the best off-hand and I have watched that game at least 10 times (I own the official DVD). Kansas, which ran a somewhat complex zone blitz scheme, similar to many schemes in the NFL, was able to use inferior talent and lowly rated players who had struggled to disrupt the passing game just weeks earlier in the Big 12, to beat VT and Brown.

I wasn't high on Staley at all last year, but I'm not that high on Brown this year either. I think it is a push between them, but I am more willing to give Brown his fair shot before passing final judgment, but he has a lot further to go in my mind than many of yall's.

Did you look at the numbers? Obviously not, Mario got 0 sacks and Campbell/Jackson only had 2 tackles a piece with 0 sacks. Merling got 1 sack and Long got 1.5.

Without a doubt, you can use a players college history to judge how he will do at the next level.

But with a player like Duane Brown, converted to offense in college, converted to lineman, converted to LT.... we see a guy who just kept getting bigger & bigger, and that's not a bad thin, yet maintained a starting position year after year.

We all need to understand he's raw.

We also need to understand that Ephraim Salaam has played very well(not probowl, but solid) at a position he is not the most qualified to play. It's a system... some systems are great for QBs, some are great for RBs, this one, if Duane is smart enough, can be very good for offensive linemen.

Think about what this system has done for a guy drafted in the 7th round, many many moons ago.

I think we need to keep in mind who is going to be around Brown this coming year. I expect with a Center that is able to make calls on the line and won't fold after the snap will make a bigger difference then some people would suspect.

RG will be up for grabs in TC and preseason but I think the rest of the line is fairly set with the biggest wildcard being Charles Spencer. If Brown does well in both it wouldn't surprise me to see him get the nod at LT. If that is the case I wouldn't expect him to be put out on an island at LT ala Winston Justice and Osi. I'd help from Vonta and Breuner and RB chips.

Kyle might be a young Coordinator in name but Kubiak and Gibbs aren't stupid and I don't think Kyle is either to have this kid fall on his face.

Look Brown converted from tight end after his freshman year. Started two years at right tackle before moving to the left side as a senior. Named 2nd-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference. All I have to say is....WHAT?! :photos: Thunderkyss is off the chain tonight!

Um... is it a good thing to be off the chain?

See, I'm a white kid from Canada. I honestly don't know...

I downloaded the LSU vs VTech game and Tyson Jackson did absolutely nothing against Duane Brown. All the pressure came from the right side of the offensive line.

Well ll I know they finally have a legitimate canidate in the pipe line. Something completely different from the brain trust for a change. Pick him apart if you wanna. Huff and puff at the brick house. Everyhing I see about the guy says he'll make it. He's not a prima donna. And he's going to kill himself befor he let's himself fail. Can't ask for more than that from a rookie. You build from the inside out. First get the lines squared way. Then draft/sign the prety.

Pete you're taking this thread out of context . This thread was about a player who i thought Brown compared most to in recent drafts . The 9ers gave up alot for Staley the Texans traded back to get Brown . One guy was picked 26th the other 28th a year earlier . They're both smaller quicker type players .

You could also say Staley , Albert , or Chris Williams ?

IN JUDGING BROWN'S WORTH, I CONSIDER THOSE PLAYERS (NOT JUST LTs)WHO THE TEXANS COULD HAVE HAD. THEY GOT WHAT THEY CONSIDERED BEST FOR THE TEAM. IT IS ON SMITH /KUBES & GIBBS. I CAN DIG THAT.
(sorry just realized CAPS was on from my work.)
