Falcons owner Arthur Blank in trouble for Fuzzy Zoeller like racial comment

When Tony Kornheiser posed the question of Vick returning to the Falcons, Blank referred to many things which could factor into this decision. One of those being the amount of fried chicken Vick eats in jail:

I'm listening to Jim Rome this morning and he's busy fielding calls about
Blank's x-QB Vick.
Of course Jim Rome, being Jewish-American as Blank is, is very defensive about this unfortunate remark that his buddy Blank made about fried chicken/Vick in the MNF interview last night.
Look for a formal apology from Blank and/or ESPN as Blank is already in big trouble with the huge ATL African-American population/Falcon fan-base.

I don't think he had any racist intent, but come on Blank, for a guy with as much money as you, you have to know that saying something like that is going to get u in hot water, even if you are talking about a felon.

Give me a break.

If he said something derogatory about British people or Caucasians then nobody would care.

The PC police are killing this country.

It was a bad joke from an old rich guy.

Generally i would agree here but you're wrong... see Kanye West implying that dubya is a racist when he said "george bush doesn't care about black people.." during the Katrina debacle.

Mike Meyers was like :yikes: :embarrass

Yea but Mike Myers is Canadian & he probably doesnt have to listen to Kanye West's BS all the time.

I doubt that Blank's comment were racial (atleast conciously), but it is surprising that a man as smart as Arthur Blank would be so careless in his remarks on MNF about this very, very controversial subject involving Vick and the fans of the city of ATL.
Blank after all is the founder of Home Depost and is probably worth billions and has been regarded as a brilliant man in advertiser & PR.
In this day & age of PC, one would think Blank would be the last person to make such a mistake on a live, national TV sports-production.

I watched it on youtube. It was a very innocent statement about eating unhealthy fattening foods (fried chicken and french fries) while in jail. Anyone making a big deal about it is just race baiting.

Yeah, but it still didn't quell the sheer embarassment he had by being on TV with a guy saying something that he apparently didn't agree with.

Bottom line there are some things you just don't say in front of a camera, even if it's as innocent as what blank said.

That is ridiculous. Whomever is making a big deal out of this are actually the ones being racists because they are implying that only black people eat fried chicken and fries. Next.

That should be a new buzz word!

I heard this last night too and thought to myself - there will be at least a handfull of morons that make a big deal out of it....

I'm shutting down for about 15 minutes - so that I can run to Popeyes. I missed my normal 'fried chicken day' yesterday - so I am making up for it today.

I was thinking the same thing, about unhealthy foods being eaten - that he'll get out of football shape fast. Shoot, he looked chunky already on the msn page yesterday in court.

Guess I need to check the batteries on my PC radar as that flew by me without much of a racist thought.

Its not racist if he's correct, right?

Maybe Vick really loves fattening foods like fried chicken and fries. Its not unheard of. I love both of those things

The British are streotyped as loving fried chicken? Are the Irish also stereotyped for their love of watermellon and the Welsh for their love of Chitlins? I'm confused?

For those who didn't complete 8th grade grammar class the preceding was SARCASM.

When people make fun of my Irish friend for loving to drink just because he's Irish he doesnt go all up in arms about it.

It's not even that African Americans are offended by this stuff. It's that the media and everybody else jumps to their defense like they need help.

I eat fried chicken and french fries all the time, but I'm not offended by what Blank said.

How do you know AA's aren't offended by it? b/c the ones u know aren't? I think that's a pretty myopic view of things.

Some areas lend themselves to more sensitive radars when it comes to things like this. If Blank says what he said in a room full of AA's in a city with that kind of history & that is thought of by many young AA professionals as "the black mecca" for business, i guarantee u at least half of them would be offended on some level. Now how they react to it is a different story.

It is perfectly ok to make fun of whites, black comedians can do it all day long everyday, but if a white comedian made fun of any race then it would be racist.

I F'n hate pc police.

Arthur Blank should have said well as long as he does not kill any more dogs, gamble, get involved with relatives who sell drugs and be a complete freakin moron then we might consider taking him back.

Anyways............... My 3 peice from Popeyes was awesome...

Oh, and I dont get bent out of shape for being associated with consuming a lot of alchohol, nor do I get upset about comments made with potatoes or cabbage....

he'd be lying if he said that. Everyone knows he's done there & probably in the league as well.

As for your other point for the most you're right but white comedians do make fun of blacks/hispanics, you just have to be careful about. I've seen Jeff Foxworthy & lesser known white comedians do it effectively. Hell, if you watched "Martin" over the last decade he had characters engaging in what is thought to be stereotypical "black" behavior (white mike & his radio show producer). But can you go up there ala Micheal Richards? hell no.

The problem is people are assuming the worst of several possible options:

(1) Blank happens to know one of Vick's favorite foods is in fact fried chicken.

(2) Blank was reflecting a southern food observation rather than a black people observation.

(3) Blank was racially stereotyping.

Frankly the only way to choose between those possibilities is to make a racist determination that because Blank is white it must have been #3 "because that is what white people do."

OK. But I'm sure that I could say something to get you riled up. Because everybody has a button just waiting to be pushed. Everybody.

I agree. I think the guy just got caught in the situation because he thought of "fatty" foods yet America assumes that it must be racists. They are leaving off the french fries part of it. He was just trying to say he shouldn't get fat. I guess if he said hamburgers I should have been offended because I love them?

Also, I've never seen Rome sugar coat or downplay anything because he is Jewish. To me that is just off.

as a caucasian american i must express my outrage because i feel guilty of what my ancestors did to those colored folks' ancestors yada yada yada.

I had fried chicken for lunch along with some mashed potatoes and green beans. I hope that was ok.

Exactly. He was merely talking about Vick gaining weight and not taking care of himself.

But as I watched it on live tv I knew this was going to happen. :dangit:

Anyone who has seen the film of Blank pushing Vick around in his wheel chair on the sideline, and then make a statement that Blank is racist, is just totally stupid.

If Vick was a cajun and Blank mentioned eating too many crawfish, anyone think this big 'to do' about nothing would happen?

Cajuns would just answer that you can't eat too many crawfish. :D

Sheesh...will it :crying: never end? :hairpull:

:coffee:

Maybe... I just don't usually get upset over stupid stuff, especially when its not within my control.

Ain't nothing wrong with a little "barnyard pimp"!!

What got me is when they were asking him about the draft and their QB situation...to me Blank just kind of sang out "we're going to freaking pick a QB with our 1st round pick!!"

I'll admit I wasn't really paying attention that much including all the Reggie Bush bashing by the commentators and the interview with Blank. I was listening to every other word...didn't hear him saying anything about Fried Chicken. I will automatically assume he meant nothing about it and people are blowing it was out of proportion as usual, but going on national tv you have to realize what your saying. I am far from being racist but I know that fried chicken is a sensitive subject and would steer clear even if I meant- they feed you crap in federal prison.

What is sad is that this is the way society has trained people to think...expecting the backlash. The guy that fills in for Palillo on 790 was on before Thanksgiving..actually day before while we were driving to Austin and he starts talking about how we upgraded with speed on the Astros because we were slow and white before. He started getting pounded and then compounded it by slipping and saying something about African Americans being faster in athletics and how he was just saying the truth about the Astros. I just kept squinting and looking back at my wife shaking my head. I was like, "this guy is going to get blasted."

Good post. I think everyone here is on the same page & knows what he meant but the reality of it is he probably should've been more careful with what he said.

So if a white guy calls me the N-word i shouldn't be offended b/c he "meant" it how it is used in the rap world? I get what you guys are saying, but being PC & being offensive is all a matter of opinion. You might think that what Blank said was harmless, but to someone who's had racial slurs & things said to them before they might look at it differently. Doesn't make you right/wrong, nor the offendee right/wrong.

I heard it last night and I had no trouble figuring out what Blank was getting at. It was pretty clear to me that he was referring to fatty foods. People can choose to be offended by the comment, but honestly it seems like a terrible way to go through life by being offended by an innocent remark like that one.

I guess there is no way in the world he ment it in a southeren culture, especially being that Blank is from the south and fried chicken is a very dominent food in the south among whites and blacks.

Nope I guess not.

And the whole free Mike Vick thing had more racial overtones than anything Blank had said. Mike Vick is not a slave who needs to be set free, he is not a political prisoner who should be set free. he is a low life scum bag who is doing time for killing dogs and funding a dog fighting ring.

I don't think I stated that at all. Not even close. In fact the opposite when it comes to the radio piece I heard. He took it too far in the end but at first I don't think what he said crossed a line...people have called the Astros too slow and too white because of McClane for a long time. I cringed at the thought of how it kept going.

As for Blank, I am not going to fault people for having their own opinions but from what I saw and heard he just pulled two fatty foods out of the air and one of them touched a nerve because of a stereotype. I wouldn't think that an owner would do that or be that careless about stereotypes...especially one who seemed to love Vick. In context his comment was nothing.

DH

Could we add that all whites are automatically stereotyped as racist?

Until proven otherwise.

Not too confusing.

That is EXACTLY the point I was attempting to make. I wasn't offended by his comments, but I did find them insensitive and kinda stupid. Being offended means that you care on some level and I simply don't.

I have to be honest, I don't assume that. Unfortunately I can be a bit of a misanthrope, but I apply that to people of all races. If someone is being a jerk to ME I wonder if they guy's a jerk to EVERYONE or just me. I wouldn't automatically assume that my maltreatment was simply because of my race.
Despite not particularly caring for MOST people I'm willing to give most the benefit of the doubt. Incidentally if you're from Louisiana chances are you're descended from the French, the British, native Americans, Chinese Imigrants and anyone whose ever been there on vacation and really have no reason to be a racist...yet many Louisianans seem to be. Curious. The only people I HATE are the Dallas Cowgirls and their fans. Everyone else I can have a beer/sake with.

:splits:

media digging up a story..

this "racist" thing about eating is too funny

I mean seriously

white folks like mac and cheese, hotdogs, chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, some southerners like spam .balogna etc etc.

Hispanics, like tortillas, refried beans, rice etc.
blacks like chicken, grits, watermelon etc etc..

it is what most of us grew up on.... that is the norm.. go to east austin to churches fried chicken and see the strawberry fanta that is served(or available) in the places along with chicken..does that make the restaurant racist? no, it makes them knowing what their clients like to drink

everyone is different.. and majority do that..

I personally make fun of my friends (hispanics with tortillas and such) and my black friends with chicken and such)

but does that stop me from getting a half a bird with fries at churches or go get me some miga's for breakfast or go to freebirds for some fajitas, refried beans, rice, sour cream etc..on my burrito?

heck no... I like it all and from what I can tell, hispanics, blacks ,chinese etc etc..still like "white food" as in hamburgers, hotdogs etc etc

just stupid on the pc crowd.

what is funny is I went to fredericksburg, texas and they had a german taco

I was like what is that?

tortilla,sausage and sauerkraut...

and I ate one

The PC crowd all go to the church of the perpetually offended and that is the reason they always are spouting off.

I was listening when it was said and my thinking at the time was, "They serve fried chicken in jails??" One half second later my second thought was, " Please, can we do the interview some other time guys?? I'm trying to watch a football game here. It's not like you'll let the story drop thought the cracks or anything."

I can't believe this is a story. Jesus. I think I hear Sharpton coming down the hallway.

Unfortunately for the PC fans out there this story ain't got no legs. Score one for the folks who think PC is a made up political tool meant to divide people.

" I will automatically assume he meant nothing about it and people are blowing it was out of proportion as usual, but going on national tv you have to realize what your saying. Thank you OM-Texan, you really nailed it with that comment.
The thing is, few groups whine & complain more about perceived indiscretions
of PC than Jewish-Americans. For example, anybody else remember the incident when the Black NBA basketball player made some remark about how Jewish people are good lawyers & business owners, in reference to the disproportionate number of NBA teams that are owned by Jews ? Of course the same is true in the NFL, with something like 25% team ownership by a group that makes up only 'bout 2% of the general population. Jews are very self-concious about "allegations" or "perceptions" that they are overly focused on money, control, etc.
So Mr. Blank, a Jewish-American billionaire who owns an NFL franchise,
most definitely blundered in his remarks on TV the other night if one
buys into the cliche "what's good for the goose is good for the gander".

There is more railing against the PC bogeyman here than folks hating on Arthur Blank for his choice of words.

I love these type of threads, as they are theater of the absurd.

I watched MNF and really didn't notice Blank as saying anything out of the ordinary given that Vick will be in a different environment and staying in shape could be a challenge.

Now, Fuzzy Zoeller, on the otherhand, comments weren't quite the same, IMO.

"That little boy is driving well and he's putting well. He's doing everything it takes to win. So, you know what you guys do when he gets in here? You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not serve fried chicken next year. Got it? Or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve."
