I have to wonder if Kyle is being groomed for OC in 2008 after Sherman is hired as a HC somewhere else.
This whole thing has favoritism over qualification written all over it, and makes my skepticism alarm go off.
Your first sentence is my thought.
As for your second sentence, I disagree. I've seen a bunch of the Texans coaches do chalk talks, some better than others. Kyle Shanahan's was very impressive. I had a choice as to whose talk I was going to watch, and I chose to watch his because I was very skeptical about his initial hiring like a lot of the people on the MB, but I came out believing that he was one of those people that can help Kubiak communicate his message of what he is trying to do.
KS is a coach's kid, only son, who played D I football for a good program despite being in his words "slow." He lives football, and when he talks football you forget how young he is.
This is what I wrote about him last summer:
Link: "Mario Williams is big, and slightly less obvious observations.
One of the stories he told was how he tried to get Gruden to change one aspect of the offensive line blocking to make it more like the way Denver does it. Gruden was intrigued by it, but in the end, decided to do things more conventionally.
It was this chalk talk that really opened my eyes to what is possible with this offense, but how difficult it would be to get all the players knowing what they are supposed to do. It also made me realize how much the Denver blocking scheme is intrinsically important to the entire offense. (Making the run blocking/pass blocking look the same to Ds + cut blocks).
The first drives of a lot of the games with the scripted plays were often the most successful ones because they players could do and not think. KS showed how really subtle things (ones that you would in a million years not notice on TiVO), made the plays work or not work.
I know with his age it is easy to be dismissive of him, but look around the league and see who is being hired as head coaches. Lots of young guys in the league.
As for the topic of the post, I think it writes nothing on the wall. Kubiak will still be very involved with the QBs, but Shanahan is someone that knows what Kubiak is trying to get his QBs to do. How deep the QB rollouts are supposed to be? Where he is supposed to look at the field at a particular time? Etc.
