A quote most have been waiting for from Mario

Not sure if this has been posted, but Mario was interviewed today and while all pro players pretty much say the right things, this is a statement that I personally have been wanting to see:

(on how it seems like he is doing more hand fighting than someone his size needs) “I feel like I’m 295 lbs so I have to be more violent. That is the number one thing my coaches tell me about is I have to be more violent and not really patty-cake with anybody. Just go hit them in the mouth and make a move after that.”

Let's hope he takes this to heart and does it. BTW, we aren't responsible for the opposition's dental bills are we? :stirpot:

I for one would love to see this guy throw a bigger punch, not lay his hands on someone and push but PUNCH his guy in the chest and slide that sucker up into his throat every now and again.

This guy can play he needs someone to talk about his mom or he needs someone to step on his infected toe to get MAD!!!!!!!!!

He needs to take a class in Peek 101- How to get flippin ticked.

Wow, imagine Mario's physical tool set with Peek's motor/attitude. I like Peek, even in the Texans' programs he looks like he's ready to jump up and sack the photographer.

We really need Peek back in like Hulk said!

This team is in NEED of someone with fire to yell on the sidelines ala Michael Strayhorn and Jeremy Shockey of the Giants

(not going as far as Shockey did by pointing fingers but people to get MAD about this on the sidelines DURING the game).

There have been about 5 times thru pre-season and the 1st 3 games when Mario looked like he forgot about thinking and was just big--on those plays he has tossed people like they were nothing. Overall he has been unimpressive so far but IF or more hopefully when he learns to use what he has he can justify the #1 pick. Dude will never be Freeney or Kearse--he needs to learn to be Williams. A little Peek injection would be a good thing.

Ok I volunteer to go and bad mouth his momma thru a bull horn wearing the jearsey and helmet of the teams quarterback we're playing against. I will need a good driver. Someone that will get me the hell out of their if he should want to get violent with me.

Hehe...I was thinking about Henry Winkler talking to Sandler in The Waterboy, visualize and attack. What would Mario visualize...the press saying he shouldn't have been the number 1 pick. If that doesn't get him fired up I don't know what will. Just my :twocents:.

Absolutely, but without the vomiting between each play from the adrenalin.

Probably Visualize ESPN people saying what a bad pick he was at Number 1.

"Mario Williams sets Sack Record thanks to Visualization"

:yahoo: I can see it now. :ok:

fwiw, the phrase "I want upper body violence" came out of Coach Karm's mouth every five minutes as I watched him put the DLs (including Mario) through their paces in training camp. That was in late July.

I'm sure Karm would be happy to read that Mario quote. It proves the student was listening to the teacher at some point in the last two months.

Next lesson: Just do it.

On the play where #76 got called for a hold against him, he was pretty awesome. He started going for the outside, and when #76 tried to step out in front of him, Mario exploded into his chest. #76 backs up & Resets, Mario punches him high in the chest, sending him back again...... Mario rushes him, & reaches for Brunnel, & that's when #76 started grapling him.

Babin was Bullrushing #69(??) at the same time, who also got called for holding.

Im sorry...But I don't understand where the jubilation is in this quote...I heard him say this on the radio yesterday and honestly it made me uneasy...What do you mean "not really patty-cake..." Why were you doing that to begin with Mario??? I have to be more violent??? You are a professional football player....Number one overall pick at DE....And you have to be told to be more violent??? Oh is that all it took...Now the problem will be solved....Mario needs more work than to just be told..."be more violent"....I really hope our d-line coach steps up, because from what I see our defense is looking like a perennial weakness...

If you watch the Colts game (Mario's best effort to date) He was blatantly held many times without a penalty being called. Had it not been for those holds he would have probably gotten at least 2 sacks as they were from Mannings blind side on those plays.

Butttttt..... That happens constantly in the NFL, so I guess you can't really use that as an excuse. I thought the comment he made about how hard it was to get a sack in the NFL was interesting. It kinda shows where he's at as a rookie. Figuring out that the NFL is much bigger and faster than college. He has obviously been playing with a lot of hesitation, He's not committing his whole body to the play. I really believe once it sinks in that he has the ability to dominate his blocker(s) He will. I also think that once he gets his first sack his confidence level will go way up, and he will be a force for the team.

Exactly. That's sad. His quote from yesterday is very telling of the player that we drafted.

He's been a Pro player for 3 games, and he was number one pick from college level football. I don't hear people dogging Seth Payne.. He has not played any better than Mario and he's part of the same crappy defense and is a seasoned veteren.

If anyone wants to blame a defensive player he should look at the lack of veteren leadership, not how the rookies are playing.

Unless of course they just have a chip on there shoulder about a specific player, or maybe thier still tring to prove to every one that they were right about a comment they made a month ago.

who knows.....

This has nothing to do with our defense...I didn't say one word about how badly our defense was playing...YOU brought that up...All I'm saying is that there is cause for concern and I'm not going to act like Mario is a sure thing.....I think he has capabilities...But statements like that scare me...C'mon...As big and strong as he is....he has to be told to be more violent?!?!?!?!.....Stop playin' patty-cake???!!!....If that doesn't make you a little worried.....

And I mean is that all it took??? For someone to tell him that ???

edit: and please don't accuse me of having vindettas against any players...I don't know any of them personally so therefore I don't have anytyhing personal against them...

Alright Mario. We're waiting for you lay the smack down on the opposition.

Looking forward to both teams coming away from the game Sunday 1-3.

Would someone please pass this on to MW

You have our permission to whip the crap out of every offensive lineman and player that you see on sunday. These guys you are playing against are nothing but the dirt under your feet and feel free to wipe them off. You are a Texan because we need your size and strengths. You will not be sued or taken to jail for beating the holy b jezus out someone. So get your head out of your butt and go play some damn football.

I think that Kubiak needs to spike Mario's OJ with kerosene and sprinkle gunpowder over the top of his WHEATIES!!! Then teach him how fun it is to pee on an open flame. Just so he can start to learn how cool the sensation is to be a "Bad Son-of-a-Gun!!!"
:brickwall "Hit the Wall AGAIN Mario" :heh: "Good Boy!!"---Kubiak
REAL NICE!

I also don't understand why he had to be "told" to be "more violent". A quote most have been waiting from from Mario?????? Puh-leeeze.

He did, however, set a cute little trap for himself with that "more violent" statement. If he never gets a hand on Culpepper this Sunday . . .

. . . this thread will be very 'entertaining'. :heh:

I agree with your post dantem...but MW is going to be going through the "Yao Ming" syndrome for a while. That is, until he realizes that he can whoop some tail!

I could understand why Yao Ming was having trouble adjusting to the more physical, aggressive nature of the NBA because of the differences in Chinese culture and international basketball. But, I don't see why MW has to be told or learn to be a little more violent in his game. Hopefully, he'll figure it out this year.

It sounds to me like a player who is new at dealing with the press and so he quotes everything the coaches have told him.

I really doubt he didn’t realize he was supposed to play aggressively.

What really bugs me is that the rookie on this defense is taking credit for the problems, but the DC still will not admit he has made some really bad decisions. I'm worried that his inability to admit that he is part of the problem is going to cause the problems to continue...

LOL...What don't you get??? Nobody is blaming our defensive problems on Mario...Mario is taking blame for the bad game he had against Washington....Not one time in this thread has the defense been talked about except by you...

I don't really care if he doesn't get 3 sacks a game. Don't get me wrong I want to see him lead our team in sacks but what I want from him is what I was promised on draft day....making our defense better. If that means Weaver, Johnson, Peek, Babin or Payne end up leading our team in sacks with like 11 or something and/or our DBs are picking off QBs, I am all for that.

I do however want to see that be the case this Sunday because I am getting tired of losing and making other teams look like they are already engraving their name in the Lombardi.

LOL...What don't you get???

I don't get why you always resort to acting like a five year old when someone dissagrees with you... Never the less, you better keep hoping for Mario to do poorly. because if he turns the corner all your time spent bad mouthing a rookie lineman will be wasted.

Well to be fair...You can't expect him to have made our defense better from jump street...He is only in his third game, and he shouldn't be expected to dominate quite yet...

I never bad mouthed him...You Mario die hards, and kool aid sippers, just don't get it...Just because I disagree with something Mario says, or criticize him doesn't mean I don't like him or want him to fail...I have criticied almost every player on this team at one time or another...get over it...it's nothing personal...I don't like the comment, and I don't like how he played last week...period...If you wan't to talk about football I'm all for it...

I agree with you... except for the word "promised"

We weren't told wait for him to get better. We were told the validation of this pick was that help our team be better and be an immediate impact to our team since he makes the same kind of impact to our defense that Reggie makes to an offense.

We are not getting that right now.

Reading the article, Williams comments reminded me of when I first started playing Golf, I played just fine until I got with a golf pro and started learning new technique. for the next 2 months I could barely hit the ball because I was so engrossed in getting my technique right, I finally got so frustrated that I started just using the old baseball swing again and letting loose and the new stuff I had learned started making a difference.

Not that I'll ever be a good golfer...

I think Williams has been on "Transition" overload. and I am excited to hear him say what he said here. Can't wait to see if his play changes this week.

Yes we are.........

If you say defenses are keying in on REggie, allowing others to make big plays, I can say the same about Mario.

To me, it looked like Washington was running away from Mario.... OUr playmakers just didn't make the play.

TK, your optimism is overwhelming at times. Amusing and appreciated at times, but still overwhelming.:)

Nice rhetoric and all, but it's nothing more than words until he backs them up on the field of play. The proof is in the pudding.

I would have thought that a 'mean streak' is something that a defender has instilled into his core being at a young age. But maybe not.

I won't be at the game this weekend, so my luck, this will be the game Mario blows up and has a breakout performance.

This will probably also be the game that Richard Smith "finds pages 18-25 in the playbook" as someone else put it, decides to start blitzing, and we send Culpepper back to Miami with 4 turnovers en route to a 44-14 route.

I think that's a great analogy. He is relearning everything for a little while.
