Nick Caserio - New GM

The first blunder to me was Cal’s one on one lunch with Watson. At that lunch he made promises he knew he wasn’t going to keep.
Once Watson quit no big time coach was taking this job. Especially with no draft picks in the first two rounds and no money to bring in top notch free agents.

Then those allegations came out and it was a wrap for any big time coach coming to this mad house.
What promise did Cal make to Derrick?

What promise did Cal make to Derrick?

He would get a seat at the table when they started the GM and HC hiring process. Bad move to include a player in the process. Sad part....even if Watson had been included, his past indiscretions were coming to bite him the arse.

The problem was the interpretation. I don't for a second believe that Cal told Watson that he would get a seat at the table for hiring of HC or GM. I think Watson thought that's what he heard but I think what Cal actually said was something along the lines of 'Of course we would like your input on our hires'.

If Cal said “I promise we will consult with you on the hiring of the next GM and HC.” Then yeah bad move by Cal.

If Cal said “I value your input and will reach out to you through the process” says something entirely different but can be interpreted the same way.

Cal may have said something that can be misconstrued and he apologized for not having better communication.

Does that warrant demanding a trade and quitting on your team? I say no.

With Watson can we believe what he said? A guy with 30+ alleged sexual assault allegations gives low credibility especially one that would quit on his team after 6-8 months of signing a contract.

Let’s not forgot Watson up and left for vacation during the middle of GM search. If he wanted to be consulted why did he leave? Actions speak louder than words and something tells me this was just a big ploy for him to get traded.

Once again it is Watson’s word vs Cal’s. And I could make the argument that Cal apologized to take the high road. That’s the marketing team working for him. Just like him flipping burgers with fans. Future players wouldn’t want to play for him if he turned it more into a owner vs player.

He gave Derrick a seat at the table, but hired who he had been wanting to hire for yrs. Then Derrick acted like a petulant child, which should surprise nobody.

Having a seat at the table doesn't mean having final say. Something Derrick was too dumb to realize. It was probably the 1st time in his life somebody told him no.

Hard to say. Cal talked about a committee he was putting together, but none of the members he mentioned knew anything about it. I wonder if Cal remembers what he said & when?

I agree with all the responses b/c Bob McNair had wanted Caserio as his next GM even before he was available to approach….legally. I believe Cal just carried out his Dad’s wishes.

Unfortunately for Watson, Cal didn’t need nor want his input on the decision that was made the moment Caserio was available to be hired. Watson pouted like a child and the Texans really tried to appease him by hiring Culley…..the only coach who would take the job. It was like trying to make a spoiled child happy while he was still stomping around holding his breath until the shite hit the fan.

Only because when it came time to hire a GM, this idiot was on a Yacht in the Bahamas living the high life.
What does that have to do with anything in today's world? You run a business as well as I do, but that doesn't mean I have to go to the office to conduct business. We are in a world without wires. You can be across the globe, facetime, zoom, google meet and be face to face.

I believe Cal told Watson that he would be part of the conversation and kept in the loop at a minimum and he wasn't and never was.
The Esterbe part being involved in the hiring process and when they hopped on the jet and got Caserio off 1st contact and didn't do it with any other candidate, that was it imo. Jamie Rootes, Chris Olsen, Amy Palcic all leaving of being forced out by Esterbe was also signs of what was going on. If Cal would've hired Dorsey,Khan, or someone of that ilk, everyone would've took that as Cal made the decision, but when Caserio was hired, everyone knew it was Esterbe. Everything was downhill after that.

You're making excuses,as the face of the franchise Derrick should have been in Houston at that time, or at least checking in with Cal regularly. After all Cal is the boss and sometimes cell phones don't work on boats. Bottom line is Derricks vacation took precedent over the GM search so Cal did what he was always going to do anyways. Hire Caserio. Frankly I don't understand why Derrick was so upset. I would guess it has something to do with his lack of character.

I'm not making excuses and nobody knows how many times they communicated before Caserio was hired. Again, I've been all over the globe on vacation and still communicated with my business partners. You can zoom all over the world my friend. I was in Dubaii having zoom calls with my business partners. You don't have to sit by a landline and wait for a call anymore. I don't know what world you live in.

Exactly and that was on Derrick. He should have made a point to keep in touch with his boss.

If you go check the timeline, the comms stopped once they got on the jet and brought back Caserio. Cal had this so called committee that non of the participants knew they were part of. He hired Korn ferry to look for gms.Everything was flowing until that plane ride with Esterbe. After that, it was over and then the trade demand came in.

I'm glad that Cal didn't use Korn Ferry.

I think they brought us BOB.

When they fired BOB, the Texans had the luxury of being the 1st to get the best qualified. They could hired 3 or 4 ex gms who had a track record and have them evaluate the operations. They didn't even interview Will McClay who is by far one of the best drafting personel guys in the league. Dorsey, for all his quips, know how to find talent in any round. Polian, Wolf to name a few. Its not the point he hired Caserio, its how he got to that point with Esterbe. Hell, look at the best rosters in the nfl and who drafted them. Nobody looks at NE roster and says, those are great rosters no matter who was making the call. most says its hoodie, right? That's not to say Caserio didn't deserve a shot.

I think they've tried to interview McClay in the past and Jerrah denied permission. I would have loved for Cal to have brought McClay home.

Dorsey was my 1st choice for GM and I still wish Cal would've gone in that direction. I say this as a guy who likes the job Caserio did. I think Dorsey wasn't even in consideration, he built the Chiefs by drafting guys that the McNair's wouldn't let him draft. (Guys like Hill/Kelce/Hunt/Clark/Peters etc...) This is the Texans loss and unless they start drafting a few of these guys they will never be SB champions.

no argument from me. McClay didn't need permission from jerry jones because he's in personel and a gm job would've been a promotion.

Jerrah gave McClay the money a GM would get to get him to stay in Dallas.
McNair could've gave him the money and the title, but Esterbe was turning that knife in his back. Nobody wanted to work for the Texans with Esterbe standing on top of them, those are facts.

Clay didn't want to leave Dallas from what I've heard. Once Jerrah said he would pay him Clay got whathe wanted Paid/Security in his job with Jerrah.

You don't think he would have job security with the Texans? He would've had that too as long as Esterbe wasn't sitting by he stage while coaches are giving pressers. How many years did Rick Smith get, like 10? The only guy who didn't get enough year was Gaine and we know why, the common denominator, Esterbe. C'mon bro, you act like you don't see the play.

He wanted to work for Jerrah.

Jerry gave McClay 6 years, $36 million? Jones could have only blocked a lateral move.
McClay turned down an interview with the Houston Texans because he wanted to stay in North Texas. The GM title means nothing to him

I believe that was in 2019, after the Brian Gaine firing. I have not seen anything on McClay being pursued by the Texans in 2021. I don't know what Jones was paying McClay, but I doubt it was anything close to $6 million/year. McClay did receive a new 3 year deal earlier in 2022. Terms unknown.

Could be. The story I was reading just prior to his current extension
It's something the Houston Texans, as one example, tried recently, but to no avail, when McClay turned down an interview for their GM position a couple of years ago
But it also mentions his families ties to North Texas and his power in the Cowboys org.

I'm sure McClay is happy in Arlington and could have found a GM job elsewhere. I just question the idea that the Texans ever went hard at McClay. Remember, the Texans never hired a GM in 2019, just handed O'Brien the job.

Casserio needs to go. He has totally botched two straight coaching hires. He also has Easterby and NE stench all over himself. For the love of God tear this ***** down, light it on fire and watch it burn. Then hire a real GM, give him the keys to the kingdom and let him go to work. The McNairs are the most clueless owners in sports. Hire someone damn good, and then stay far far far away from Kirby and if possible, never come back. Cash your damn checks from Outer Mongolia or I dunno actually sell to someone with a clue.

Caserio doesn't hire the HC's.

This is the inherent problem with this franchise. The GM can always throw the HC under the bus because he didn't hire him (and visa versa).

As long as the owner decides HC instead of allowing his GM to find someone (and be held accountable for that choice), they will most likely constantly be at odds in the front office.

I wish the McNairs would just go away.

This is the main cause of the dysfunction and I haven't seen this philosophy change under Janice/Cal.

Yep. You and I both know that this franchise will always flounder as long as the unqualified get final say about who runs the team.

They got blind squirrel lucky with Kubiak and Wade but were too dumb to sign Manning when he wanted to come here and instead kept a gimpy Schaub instead. Then they got completely sideways when they were sold a bill of goods by hiring O'Brien and treated him like he was Belichick 2.0.

It feels like every time the McNairs have a decision to make, more times than not, they always make the wrong decision. At some point, they just need to be like George Constanza and do the opposite of whatever they think they should do.

I know you want this to be the way it was so bad, but the fact still remains that Cal did not have clue who David Culley was until Nick and Jack told Cal who they were going to hire as the new head coach. If you want to put the blame on Cal, that is justifiable, if you blame Cal for hiring Nick and Jack.

It's not what I want it to be. It'swhat it is.

Take Culley out of this, what other HC's have the McNair's not hired? Maybe Culley was the unicorn, but I doubt it.

I think Culley was only hired because he agreed to keep Tim Kelley as OC and he had good referrals from Reid and Harbaugh. Cal thought that by keeping Kelley that Watson may change his mind about wanting to be traded because he had his best year with him

I have no dog in this hunt so "want this to be the way" is irrelevant.

Even if Caserio suggested Culley as your imagination describes it, the McNairs made the final decision.
