Quitting? No. But I can see them no longer buying into what the HC is selling, and that can make it seem like they’re quitting.
These guys bust their asses to go out there and win a football game. Imagine doing that every single week and every single week coaching doesn’t put you in the best position to get those wins. It’s going to get really frustrating after a while. Your effort may still be there, but your heart, not so much.
Losing sucks. And it takes a toll. And I’m not talking about going out there and beating bad to mediocre teams and piling up enough wins to hang cute little banners. I’m talking about once you do that and play real football teams, you find you’re not even close to that level. Year after year after year. That gets old.
So I don’t think the players quit on the field, per se, but they can stop buying into management’s message.
