The New New JaDeveon Clowney Thread

I'm hoping that the dolphin noise is just to put pressure on Washington. Dolphins definitely have the cap space going forward. Washington Trading Williams opens up enough for Clowney in 2020 as they can roll over from this year. Tunsil still concerns me. I really hope it's a bidding war.
Well if the Dolphin noise was just to put pressure on Washington then kudos to Clowney to go along with the ruse by firing his agent and meeting with the Dolphins coaches and FO. Now that is a good teammate.

I don't particularly care for multimillionaire athletics holding out, it's usually a negative in my eyes. But him not wanting on an OB coached team is perfectly understandable to me.

He isn't even holding out. Aaron Wilson said the texans wouldn't negotiate with him and extension. He's been on the trade block this entire time.

What a mess. Cal is letting him do what he wants. The plan was to trade him for an LT. doubtful
I was hoping Cal woul pu his foot down.
They ae in this mess because they screwed it up not once but twice when they missed an opportunity to trade him prior to the Daft and then after the Draft but before
the July 15 deadline which of course has come and gone.
This is all on O'Brien and it's looking like he's gonna have his way all the way to the end which means getin rid of Clowney for very little becaue Cal McNair seems unable
or unwilling to step up and take charge.

I'm starting to think this is why gaine was fired

ESPN2 just noted the Miami info above. I would hope they would confirm that before announcing the possibility.

It’s a holdout dude...he wants Mack/Donald money and if he must be franchised, he wants DE franchise money. The Texans rightfully ain’t giving him either.

Holding out is when you have a contract and don't show up. He doesn't have a contract.

LOL. Clowney is definitely wanting to up his contract ceiling. Why would he not meet with other teams if that would increase his ultimate package with Washington? Has nothing to do with his desire to please Texans. Firing his agent could be a side issue if he's not getting the deal he wants with Washington.

Actually they are in this mess because they failed to draft Andre Dillard.

Well, that was the latest dumb move. But multiple stupid moves preceded that one. And dumb ones followed (Matt kalil, shuffling ol and getting lamar hurt).

It's really nothing new. This is brought to you by the dude who gave us the Hoyer-Mallet carousel

I’m aware. I’m also aware of why he hasn’t signed a contract & his franchise tender. & the players’ actions would be the same with or without a contract. It’s a holdout bro

Then every free agent is holding out. It would be dumb to sign the tender until he risks losing money. Health is the priority.

It was OBriens call to not negotiate with him, so here we are.

My friends and I play Xbox with Clowney (proof below), he’s a really cool dude and very down to earth. Anyway, he told us weeks ago that Bill O’Brien was being a dick to him for missing training camp and said he’s trying to trade him to MIA or WASH for picks (3rd rd), which would be little more than the compensatory picks we would receive next year. JD then told OB and told MIA’s GM over the phone that he wouldn’t sign tag if that’s the case. Shortly after, he fired his agent and hasn’t talked to anyone on the Texans in over a week.

Today all this news came out but as i said before (in proof) it’s not going to happen…

Reddit comment from 2 weeks ago saying what’s now speculated.

Then on Monday it came out that he reposted on IG a Redskins fan’s JD highlight video with the a title like "go get him now", so we asked him and he said "hell no, just liked the video"

Reddit comment from yesterday with proof he’s not going to Redskins

The situation as it stands: JD wants to play for the Texans, and if not then he wants to go to a contender. That’s is known. What’s not reported is that he talked to SEA but they won’t spend the capital, and he talked to eagles but they didn’t offer more than a swing tackle (rugby guy). Now he’s scared to sign his tender because OB will trade him away to MIA/WAS where he refuses to play/resign. This all would be avoided if OB would just say that he wants to keep JD or sign him next year, but he’s always had it out for him and this situation put him over the edge. Gaine wanted to sign him in offseason but OB got in the way.

TLDR: Cal McNair needs to step in and assure Clowney he’s safe to stay so we can move past this and into the season, but he isn’t going to do that becasue he’s basically given OB full control of the team. O’Brien is playing dumb when he says to media he doesn’t know anything and is not in control. He is the control, and his ego is in the way of getting this settled

From the Mcclain article above:

I heard during the offseason agents were getting word to Clowney they could get the deal he wanted from the Texans, but I didn’t think he’d dump Cook, who’s been one of the best in the business for decades.

The decision to try to trade Clowney for an established left tackle who is under contract and not demanding a new deal was made by O’Brien and signed off on by chairman Cal McNair. Then it became an issue of finding a team with a quality left tackle to spare.

When Clowney didn’t sign a new contract by the July 15 deadline for franchise players, it meant he would have to play this season under the franchise tag and couldn’t re-sign with the Texans until next year. It also meant Clowney was less likely to get a deal of more than $100 million from the Texans. They’re expected to extend Watson next year, making him one of the highest-paid players in league history. If Watt stays healthy and continues to be a dominant force, they could extend his contract again.

O’Brien was hoping the left tackle problem was solved when they used a first-round draft choice on Tytus Howard. When he arrived for the rookie minicamp and the offseason program, they tried him at left guard, too. They believe he’s a natural for his new position even though his progress has been slowed because of a fractured finger.

A team that trades for Clowney might be in the same situation next year as the Texans have been this year, unwilling to meet his contract demands and forced to franchise him again.

Lol, Clowney is the biggest looming expense item on Cal’s plate..the same Cal that has shown a short fuse for making decisions. Seems like Clowney’s agent had him believe he was more valuable than he really is. Clowney has to eat a little dose of reality and move this event on. Funny that even the Miami beat writer mentioned that Clowney is good, but not great.

Not knocking Clowney’s stance at all. He’s doing what he needs to do. But make no mistake the FO. Is also doing what they need to do.

Most of those other guys are FA b/c no one wants them. His services are in demand. Not at the price he thinks he deserves but they are. Stop being obtuse and just recognize that this is a holdout in every sense of the word except in the fact that he doesn’t have a contract he’s under.

Players who hold out get fined. He's not getting fined. It's OBrien who is holding him out.

He did put his foot down. He said no on giving Clowney 5 years 110 mil 22 per. Lol.

Any team that wants to get into a bidding war for Clowney benefits the Texans, right? Do you think a team is willing to overpay for his services with both compensation to the Texans and Clowney? BTW you missed the sarcasm in my post

What are you talkin about ? Give him the fXXXing DE money because other wise the Texans are just being penny wise and pound foolish !~
We'e got a football seaon to play in 'bout 10 days. Get him in camp and play him but don't give him away.
Anybody negotiating with the Texans now can smell their desperation.

The more I see and hear the more I want OB fired. As if I already didn't have a million other reasons. The guy is a total asshole and simply put - he's a bad HC and an even worse GM.

Where the hell is Cal on all of this? We're about to lose one of the premier defensive players for peanuts or if by chance he stays he has a very disgruntled player on his hands and a potential team distraction with guys taking sides and so forth. And all of this was very avoidable but BOB pretty much stinks at everything related to football.

For the love of God, please go back to Penn State.

Desperation would be just giving in to Clowney’s demands b/c the season is approaching. Besides, Clowney STILL has to sign it. The DE franchise money vs OLB money is only 1 of his contentions...

They weren't negotiating with him so there weren't any demands.

Cal is scared and hiding in the corner. O'Brien has fired anyone else who could guide him on next steps to find a new head coach.

I think he should fire OBrien and make Crennel interim head coach.

Interesting reads above to be sure. JD sounds like he needs a hug...and he didn't get one from either O'Brien or his Agent.

Bottom line is once he signs the tender, his future is decided by the team, not him.

The tender is for one year, not his entire future. And he doesn't have to sign it

Unless u are Clowney or Gus Cook or someone very close to Clowney, no way u could know this. But If I’m to guess like u I’m fairly sure some talks happened prior to the July 15th deadline...once they got a feel for what he was asking for though, yeah they probably peaced out on him....

Aaron Wilson said the Texans did not negotiate.

Hence, the "once he signs the tender" part. And yes, it will likely determine his future.

If he chooses to sign his tender, and if Bill O'Brien chooses to trade him for pennies on the dollar because he won't resign with Miami, then he will only be signed for 1 year.

Then next year, if he's on a team without a GM who is a complete jackass, he'll be able to figure out his future

Aaron Wilson said the Texans did not negotiate.

Yeah and up until the last hour, Miami was the only team thought to have intrest...now we find out 2-3 other teams made overtures. When are u going to process that there’s more happening behind the scenes that these twitter bots dont know?

According to the guys on the radio, Clowney forex his agent some time ago & it was just made public today..

Or he gets hurt/doesn’t perform well, he’s effectively screwed himself...

They didn't negotiate with clowney on an extension. I know they are listening to trade offers.

Clowney is being smart in looking for a good place to land . I would say the Eagles are his best bet . The Seahawks signed Ziggy this off season and drafted a DE #1 .

Again no problem with Clowney’s stance....but the FO isn’t obligated to “help” him do that though.

The Texans arent obligated to capitulate to his wants!

If they didn't want to extend him they should have traded him to a team that could extend him.

With the deadline to extend now past, Clowney's trade value drops because he becomes a rental.

It's not about what Clowney wants. It's about doing whats good for the Texans. But OBrien is a complete moron.

More than one type and use of the term holdout. Not a contract holdout but Clowney needs to make a decision or he’s going to hold out on playing this year. I think he fired his agent because he was put in a tough spot on false conjecture as to his NFL value. I’d take a two from Miami in a heartbeat...about as close to a one that will ever be offered. Or just sign and earn that big contract.
