The New New JaDeveon Clowney Thread

Bus Cook probably forgot to mention after July 15th it's the tag, the tag only & possibly the tag again next year regardless which team he plays for.
He could try to negotiate a no tag clause into his one year deal. There is still a lot he can do to ward off trades he doesn't like if he is willing to lose some money and sit longer.

I hear you and he’s definitely a good prospect (that’s why we’d want him). I had this as a straight up trade, therefore you’d have a first rd next to draft another rookie OT and you could be in the same situation next year. Additionally, I cannot imagine Clowney not wanting to resign with you guys, he’d be in a perfect scheme fit, you guys have young talent and a great young QB. It’s truly a win-win IMHO

To me, if you have a shot to win the SB you have to take it. Philadelphia is a contender this year, with Clowney I’d move them to strong contender perhaps a 3 -way tie with NO and the LAR. Clowney and Graham would give you guys a strong pass rush, which you’ll need against those 2 teams.

Also, I believe a good, fair trade should hurt both teams a little, while making you better at the same time. I believe my proposal does that for both teams. You guys lose a promising young T while keeping your 1st to replace him next off season. Our DL would take a big hit but we’d be one step closer to keeping DW out of the ER

I understand where you're coming from. I think teams can be naive sometime playing the long-term game when the window of opportunity on a championship run can shut real quick. Plus as I've said before I would absolutely love Clowney in our D. I think he could put up some gaudy numbers in a wide-9 scheme.

It would just be a very out of character move for our front office IMO. OL has been a huge emphasis for awhile now and Stoutland is borderline revered by the staff. Plus as I said we're not in the best cap space going forward and as much as I love Howie I don't see how we could fit his eventual contract in with our other franchise players short of him signing a pretty cost friendly deal (which seems unlikely).

Houston Texans franchise-tagged defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has met with Miami Dolphins coaching staff and front office personnel. Clowney has been surrounded by trade rumors over the past month after there has been no deal in place to bring him back to Houston.

There have been multiple teams attempting to figure if Clowney fits their plans. It is clear that the Dolphins are taking the most proactive steps to make this a reality.....

#Texans franchised pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney has met in person with #Dolphins coach Brian Flores and other members of the organization’s brass, sources say. There has been speculation that Miami is a possible landing spot.

Dolphins are very interested in trading for Jadeveon Clowney, according to league sources, but have to get him interested in going there. Prefers Seahawks, Eagles as potential destinations. Fluid situation because he has leverage as unsigned franchise player

The Texans did engage teams on Jadeveon Clowney some in the spring. The belief then, according to multiple clubs involved, was that he could be had for a second-round pick.

Cook and the Texans were at peace in the spring with the arrangement that Clowney, if he wasn't traded, would play out the year on the tender. You have to wonder if renewed rumblings about a trade, and the buzz within the league about that, irked Clowney. https://t.co/I9ZFR6xM8C

The Miami Dolphins consider themselves leaders in the sweepstakes to trade for Houston defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. Story with details coming.

Clowney need to get his **** in order. Probably thought Cook wasn't been straight up with him in terms of what Miami was offering to him....

You sure about that? I could have sworn I read that in the LeVeon Bell situation for instance that the Steelers COULD HAVE franchised him again, but chose to relinquish his rights? I could be wrong though id love to be further educated on all these CBA technicalities.

You are correct. The team still held/holds the rights to that player even if they didn't sign the Franchise tender. The Steelers chose to release Bell instead of dealing with tagging him again and prolonging the inevitable.

First actually rumor. #Jets have had discussions with the #Texans for Jadeveon Clowney, per @JohnClaytonNFL who said it on his radio show.

Dolphins are not willing to include offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil in a prospective trade scenario involving Jadeveon Clowney, according to league sources. Texans need help at running back in addition to offensive tackle

— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) August 27, 2019

Who else do the Dolphins have that you guys could want outside of Tunsil? Seems like a pretty depleted roster and a rebuilding team likely to have very high picks next year trading away a ton of draft capital seems dumb on their part.

They released Bell because it would have been his third time under the franchise tag which means he would have gotten average of 5 highest paid players in the nfl

No one. If it’s not for Tunsil, I’m not even sure why we are having discussions. Unless, they are leveraging Miami’s interest against other teams

If we ain’t getting Tunsil, I hope we get at least a first and second round draft pick from the dolphins! That is, of course, if two first rounders (2019/2020) are out of the question. I say this because Clowney is a damn good defensive player, great run stopper who’d probably be the absolute best player in their roster. Besides Tunsil, I can’t possibly see any one player who’d be worth doing a straight up trade for.

Perhaps, but he technically never signed the 2nd Franchise tag so there was confusion/contention there as well. He never actually PLAYED under the tag 2 times.

I'm more using the info as a reference for what could happen to Clowney next year. I'm not worried about 2021 yet.

Here’s the quote from the article regarding Bell

In the case of Bell, even though he did not get an accrued season in 2018, if he were to be tagged again by the Steelers in 2019, it would count as his third franchise tag; it would not revert to his second. Per the CBA, Pittsburgh in that case would be required to tender Bell non-exclusively (with first- and third-round comp picks attached) at the average of the top five highest-paid players at the league's highest-paid position.

Considering that the Dolphins are in a full on rebuild and a good bet to land a top 3 pick in the draft next year they'd be crazy to give up that kind of draft capital. Just seems like the only way a deal could make sense for both teams is if Tunsil was involved.

Interesting. I was curious how they actually came down on this one, but he was released soon after and I lost interest in the Bell saga.

Though, tagging Clowney next year (if an issue) would only be his 2nd. I'm not saying that you don't already know this, btw.

The Miami Dolphins have re-engaged with the Houston Texans to explore the possibility of making a trade that would bring Jadeveon Clowney to Miami, and consider themselves the leader in the sweepstakes to land the pass rusher.

The Dolphins recently visited with Clowney, who met multiple persons within the organization as part of a recruiting effort of sorts to get the player to accept a trade to Miami. Part of this effort included a meeting with coach Brian Flores.

This is a stunning departure in what has become an ongoing negotiation between the Dolphins and Texans because two weeks ago the Dolphins had decided to back out of the Clowney sweepstakes altogether based on the Houston asking price that included at least one first-round pick.

The Dolphins at the time balked because they are expecting to use their first-round pick next year and possibly the next couple of years (in a package) to draft a quarterback.

But multiple sources say the two teams now have a more clear idea what a potential trade would look like and it does not include a first-rounder next year going from the Dolphins to Houston. This makes the deal more palatable for the Dolphins.

It remains unclear what exactly the Dolphins would offer, or more importantly, give for Clowney because such a trade can be basically a two-year rental if the team cannot get the player to sign a long-term contract.

Multiple Miami players have been mentioned in trade rumors the past couple of days including wide receiver Kenny Stills and linebacker Kiko Alonso. Such a deal could also include later and conditional draft choice considerations.

Despite this, no trade is certain.

No deal can be consummated before Clowney signs his one-year, $16 million franchise tag, which he has yet to do. The Dolphins would presumably want the former No. 1 pick here long-term, but cannot sign him to an extension until after the season.

Complicating matters: Clowney has parted ways with his agent Bus Cook and does not currently have representation. He presumably will want one in place before he gives up his leverage and signs his tender.

Despite all this, the Dolphins are clearly at the head of the pack of teams trying to land Clowney because they believe their meeting with him went very well and so far they are the only one team that has met with him.

Part of that meeting included the Dolphins laying out their vision for what they hope to be in the future. Clowney apparently came into the meeting with apprehension of what the Dolphins are likely to be short-term, in 2019, with a roster that lacks an obvious star quarterback.

The Dolphins are currently at least $26 million under the salary cap and that makes them well qualified to take on the full weight of Clowney’s franchise tag which they would have to take on in a trade.

This is the dumbest thing I’ve heard. If BOB pulls the trigger on a deal as described I hope Cal fires him immediately. I will have lost what little faith I had him. I’d rather roll with RAC then anyone dumb enough to pull a trade like this. We’d be better off with JDC on the roster.

If O'Brien trades Clowney for Kenny Stills and Kiko Alonso you all would be perfectly justified in rioting.

The Dolphins expected to be in top three picks in 2020. No way they give up the first round however, they have two seconds and at least one third round Plus a possible third round comp pick. I want all four. This may sound hi to some of you but keep in mind they will have the use of Clowney for 2019. If they have a player we could use I can see giving up the comp pick.

Yeah the draft capital could shape up to be nice without a 1st rounder.

I'm…not really sure what Miami has to gain from trading for a 2020 franchise tag player at 120% the tag in non-contending years. We've seen it reported Buffalo was interested, too. I had heard Atlanta made a call, but cooled off. SEA/PHI/BUF/ATL make way more sense than MIA… https://t.co/F5YfcLQyug

— Justis Mosqueda (@JuMosq) August 27, 2019

Atlanta has been really disappointed with Vic Beasley & I believe Clowney is from that area &/or has fam there. I think ATL is probably in it more than we know.

I'd send him to Miami for Stills and a 2nd. Stills is capable of running Fuller's routes, so we could keep the same playbook when Fuller inevitably gets hurt. A 2nd could be used to bargain for Trent Williams.

I'm hoping that the dolphin noise is just to put pressure on Washington. Dolphins definitely have the cap space going forward. Washington Trading Williams opens up enough for Clowney in 2020 as they can roll over from this year. Tunsil still concerns me. I really hope it's a bidding war.
