State of the O-line

We don't have NFL level coaches on offense. It takes the LT getting embarrassed in live action for O'Brien to stop playing him. That stuff is supposed to be figured out in training camp and practice.

Isn't this still early in training camp?

Maybe. Started about 2 weeks ago and season starts in about 3 weeks. Early/middle.

My question is what OBrien was seeing that made him give Kalil all the LT snaps, then panic in preseason and out Tytus there when he didn't have much LT practice

Oh for the love of God. This is practice, this is the pre-season, you know those games that don't matter which is why you run your B team.

This is exactly when and where you want to see what you have in Kalil. No matter how much you push in team practice it's still not the same as actually playing against another team.

This is the problem I've been screaming for a hot minute now. You have to give these men a great amount of snaps at the position they're going to play. You have to give them the right amount of time to gel with one another before the actual season starts. This is not high school or college ball. You can get away with that on those levels. But this is a different monster in the NFL. Bill O'Brien the guru continues to fail in that department.

Panic or plan? He has him play LT with the 2's not the starters, few that those were

What made him give Kalil all the LT snaps? probably the fact that he's an LT. Also, what makes you think it was "panic"?

Your trolling used to astound me....Now i sit back in :woot2 with some of the definitive conclusions you and your kind come to just from such limited view of things that you have.

Cut him if he's not up to par, think Cak said all along they would and most of us knew there was a high chance of it. His contract is even structured in a way that cutting him now costs us almost nothing so the Texans knew it to.

I agree he should be cut. Snaps going forward should go to Davenport and Tytus at LT.

I think they'll start Kalil though game 1. Hopefully not.

@PatDStat: What’s really odd is that the Texans have worked Howard primarily at left guard the entire camp. Very little LT. Now he is out there playing LT. So, this outcome is not a surprise. https://t.co/27dC4RJH8f

@riversmccown: GOOD: Thought Jordan Akins acquitted himself well. I’m growing confident about Scharping’s run blocking.
BAD: injuries. I did not know that Rankin was so far in the doghouse to play the fourth.
UGLY: LT and playing Howard at LT after so much play at LG.

Was Howard playing LT starting? NO! He was playing with the 2nd group.

Getting work in, and nothing wrong with that

The point is if they were going to do that, they should have given him more practice reps at camp. Why wait until the preseason game? Weird. But the reason was because Kalil was so bad, and O'Brien didn't anticipate that.

Honestly, this is a perfect description of O'Brien's coaching.

Lol...YOU DONT KNOW HOW MUCH PRACTICE REPS HES GETTING IN CAMP!

The only thing you know is what folks like McClain, Stoerner and Granato report...& they've all said at 1 point or another that he gets reps at LT as well.

PatDStat, who goes to camp and drinks the kool-aid said he wasn't getting many snaps and was surprised to see him at LT in the game.

I just disagree shuffling guys you peg as starters on the Oline.

I think backups are the ones who should be doing multiple positions so they can step in for any starter if needed, and let the starters stay where they are at.

I get trying guys out at different spots, but at some point you gotta stick a guy somewhere if you plan on him starting and let him master his craft.

Tackle vs interior positions are very different obviously and there's nuances to each that a player will only strengthen by playing that position almost exclusively.

The oline coordination is absolutely the most critical on the team. Cohesion benefits the individual player by learning a position and becoming really good at it and it benefits the unit by really learning the guy next to you so yall can get your dance steps right every play.

I hate, hate, hate this moving guys all over the place and I think it contributes to the miscues and no player really developing to their full potential. This team has not had one offensive lineman get better/exceed expectations by playing in this system.

The things they do with the offensive line just anger me.

That's why I want Trent Williams. That would basically solidify two positions. LT and LG and then hopefully the other positions would sort themselves out.

So then what should they do with Kalil?
I lost signal for about 1/3 of the first quarter and when I regained it toward the end of the quarter Johnson was at LT.

Before I lost signal ( watching rerun after the game) I concentrated on Kalil. There wasn't a single play that I recall, up until I lost signal ) that he lost containment on his blocking assignment.

I'd like to go ahead and start Howard at LT, but I didn't see the big deal about Kalil last night. If nothing else, he's adequate as a backup.

No need to watch then?

Nope.

How bad is it when you’re actually more interested in lurking the MB to witness the misery for a few minutes than watching stupid bad football for 3 hours?

It’s that bad. I keep reading the words “frustrating, infuriating” etc. How bout just plain old “disinterested”?

Especially when you have a baseball team in town that actually is interested in winning?

So...he is getting reps at LT in practice...you know he's getting them & you (& apparently PatDStat) are still acting like it was some surprise that he played LT in the game? Well, quite frankly that's somewhat idiotic on both of you guys' accounts. considering that 1, They've only been practicing for a little under 2 weeks & at least 1 of those days was spent traveling up to GB.

Plus, everyone knows practice reps are not the same and aren't as numerous as live game reps. You get more out of live reps than the practice reps so it shouldn't have at all been a surprise to see him playing some LT in the game last night. There were simply more to go around.

& for a guy who is still learning the ins & outs of playing on the o-line period, he needs all the quality reps he can get at guard and tackle.

I kinda agree with you here. I didn't really see anyone look overmatched on the o-line yesterday even after they shuffled & Fulton went in at C. There were a few penalties called on Howard and Kalil..Both to me looked like they could've just as easily been no calls. Kalil's in particular looked more like the dude flopped and fell down and Kalil just didn't release him until it was apparent the guy was going down. I've seen refs ignore those kinds of calls repeatedly against JJ.

Mid season overreaction day has come early this year. I know as much about this offensive line today than I knew a month ago, no more, no less. I learned absolutely nothing new watching a glorified practice last night (although I couldn’t bare watching the whole game all at once).

I don’t expect this new line to even be average for at least a full year. It’s compromised almost completely of players that need a lot of work and we already knew the offensive line coach is sub-par. So why the theatrics? What did y’all expect?

Let's just say I'm starting the season already side-eying them. My prediction is that they'll waste another year of everyone's career. I'll watch to see if I'm (hopefully) wrong. The OL play is hot garbage, and very simply, it all starts in the trenches.

Been saying this for 3 years.

I was told the OL was significantly upgraded over the off-season because they finally invested in it with Rick gone, that it was year 2 of a 3 year rebuild so we'd see progress, and that O'Brien just ran into bad luck and injuries in the past which doesn't reflect on his true offensive genius.

I was also told that the front office is finally aligned and that they are a flatter organization that knew how to win.

Also O'Brien told is Kalil and seantrel are excellent players and that they targeted Tytus Howard to be the future LT.

This is what an OL that starts a coming back from injury Kalil/Henderson and play 2 small school guys at OG.

Those two small school guys at OG were the only bright spots on the line last night and played good last night, let's leave them out of this.. for now. The rookies outplayed our vets last night, let's see if that continues with more time with our awesome coaching.

When you get to the NFL, nobody cares what school you went to.

Kalil is probably an ok backup, but we need a new LT. I think Johnson played as good or better than Kalil. Howard at LG and Fulton at C was the best combo with Scharping at RG. The interior is set if they leave it like that. Both tackle spots are a problem. We desperately need Trent Williams.

Matt Kalil looked like he was on roller-skates last night in pass protection. I can't believe the Texans think that he is acceptable as a starting LT. They need to make a ******* deal with the Redskins to get Trent Williams. Last night's game should be a big ass flashing signal to them to do so. If they have to overpay, so be it. Much more sensible to overpay for a LT than a RB. I like trading for Duke Johnson but they paid too much which is a result of not having a GM in place. Could have gotten him for a 5th rounder IMO if they played their cards closer to the vest. Basically, they are the anti-Luhnow when it comes to valuation, talent evaluation and negotiating strategery.

Kelemente's wife just liked and tweeted prayer hands in response to a tweet criticizing Mike Devlin's track record of failed vets who regressed once they got here and not having one single developed prospect on his resume here..

LMAO!

You can't make this **** up! :ahhaha: It's not just us guys.. the players and their families see it too, but do you know who doesn't? OUR DUMBASS, THICK HEADED, STUBBORN, KNOW IT ALL HEAD COACH/GM! Okay, now I want to cry.

Lack of talent and bad coaching. Still below avg at LT and the OL won't be fixed until the OT issues get solved.
The OL issues won't be resolved until we have a full house cleaning after buttchin is fired after the season. Not having a GM like Caserio beholden to BOB for his job makes it all the much easier to get rid of this idiotic fraud who shuffles linemen around creating situation where I have never seen as many mental errors being made. Watch film of Davenport last season. Worst LT play that I have EVER seen at the NFL level. Our coaching staff were responsible for it and are still pulling the same crap giving us the same garbage.

Looks like the only thing we have to look forward to this season is a player revolt and a midseason firing of buttchin. Just awesome. Wasted JJ's career and are on the track of doing the same with Deshaun and DHop. How stupid is this organization. On the business side, they know what they are doing and are run well by Jamey Rootes. The football side is an absolute disaster as we are the laughinstock of the NFL. Houston is a sophisticated football market. Despite winning 11 games last season, we knew the team was fools gold and was going to get exposed in the playoffs.

You guys are overreacting to a preseason game. They aren't supposed to look like real football players until about game 6 or 7

This isn't just about the game last night.. the same crap has been going on for years now and will likely continue with these same idiots.. The game last night was simply a reminder.

Again, what's the definition of insanity again? Kirby Dr. is a damn looney bin right now.
