2019 Training Camp

Texans/Packers Day 1 #StoernTalk
-Nobody is blockin 99
-Mercilus looked good vs GB Ts
-Texans def front is nasty vs Run
-Roby/Joseph both stood out early
-Nick Martin needs to get back
-OL is better with Howard at G
-Interior OL play is a concern#TexansCamp #610inGB

— Clint Stoerner (@ClintStoerner) August 6, 2019

To expand on Clint's last couple of points for those that didn't hear him on 610:
He thinks Howard is doing a very good job at both tackle and guard. He just sees the level of play dropping significantly from Howard at guard to the other guards behind him. Sounds like he might even like Howard more at LT than Kalil, but likes the combo of Kalil/Howard on the left, than Howard/whoever they put next to him at LG

Yikes, now the interior OL is a concern too?

Sometimes it's interior OL that's a concern, sometimes it's outside. Sounds like it's just OL that's a concern.

I thought it was addressed last year with the signings of Fulton/Kelemente and the development of Martin/Mancz/Rankin.

Oh well.

We've put enough into the OL through trades and the draft that it shouldn't be a mess this year. I don't expect everything to be fixed by game 1, but things should start looking much better by game 4 or 5. If the OL is a mess by midseason, I'm not sure how anyone can argue that these guys know what they're doing in either a) identifying talent or b) coaching the talent they've identified.

Why wouldn't the OL be ready for game 1? They should be figuring out in training camp and preseason games

'Gelling'. It's overrated but it does take a little bit of time. And I'm willing to give them some slack.

Tweet from @PatDStat: Big change today. #Texans offensive line looks solid in one-on-ones. Not many losses.

Tweet from @PatDStat: Strong day for the #Texans on day two. Much different team from yesterday.

but with you for sure on things being figured out in preseason. Take advantage of this time to give guys looks at different positions and see what you have and make sure guys are in the right position by game 1. Then gel.

Texans continue to roll with Scharping and Howard inside. #Texans

Kahale Warring again. Joe Webb hits him with the TD. #Texans

— patrick (@PatDStat) August 6, 2019

#Texans first team O still moving the ball. Converted a 3rd down. Now Watson hits Akins. Kills the clock next play.

Watson hits Fuller for the TD. Good protection and Watson. Slides to the left to hit him in the back of the end zone. #Texans

I've got you on ignore for a reason.

Dejaview.

I dont run from anything, but dont like wasting my valuable time either.

How's your boy Gaine doing? I actually like Gaine but you're over the top. The way the Texans acquire players wasn't going to change under Gaine. Although he was better than RS in the draft.
Then ignore me idiot. What valuable time....posting 24-7 for over a decade...the same crap time after time after time, lol.

Frustrated that Rankin appears to be doing poorly in camp. I expected him to make a year 2 jump and be a quality starter this season.
Usually, the saying goes, no news is good news. Rankin apparently is doing nothing to stand out - good or bad. I just would like better reporting.

Hower, back at the beginning of camp, the Chronicles Brian Smith mentioned that they were given instructions on what they could report and what was not to be reported. The way I interpreted the comment was that they are allowed to right fluff pieces but are not allowed to write serious reports on the going ons.

I think its a system issue more than anything. Sounds like the OL isn’t running a clearly defined system and presnap reads are probably an issue as well. Hopefully with a full time OC in theory some of the communication issues can get cleared up.

Agreed. Someone posted an interview w/ Wade Smith a while back and he mentioned OL guys are telling him that it takes 2-3 years for them to learn the offense. That's all I needed to hear to figure out why guys don't play up to their potential. Things are way too complicated.

It's weird because it doesn't look complicated. It doesn't look like much is happening at all.

That’ll happen when people are thinking while the other team is playing. Hence the term “play fast” and why Wade Phillips as an example has been so successful simplifying game plans so players can play fast and react less.

One end of the equation is the 90's Cowboys and the other is the Patriots . I've always joked the Cowboys could tell you the play and you still couldn't stop them ... sorry NE the video won't help . The Patriots are more cerebral and it works when you have TB12 .

Funny. I was watching a M Irvin interview earlier today and he addressed this. He was at the Steelers TC and they were discussing WR’s and who can replace A Brown. He said the Steelers just tell their players to line up and beat your man. Said they really didn’t have a system. Said they were an outside-in O, not much use of a slot receiver or tosses to TE’s over the middle but threw a lot to their wideouts. Said the Pats however are a inside-out timing SYSTEM. Said they keep everything over the middle and don’t wear Brady out throwing to the sidelines. Said that is why they are so successful with their TE’s and slot receivers. Said these were very different approaches requiring different types of players. May be interesting to keep the Pats system in mind watching the Texans this year.

If it were as simple as player types. the rest of the NFL would catch up to BB fairly quickly. IMO, BB grades more in depth than that.

He didn’t say it was the way you phrased it. He said it was system types, each requiring different types of players. Pats put more emphasis on TE’s and slot receivers. I believe the point he was implicitly trying to make is that the Steelers may need to get their TE’s and slot receivers more involved to make up for Browns 100 receptions but they don’t play that kind of O.

Sounds crazy, but it's OBrien so I wouldn't be surprised. Kalil and Seantrel should be cut, keep the rest

If they’re able to trade for Trent Williams, but then who’s gonna step up to fill GM shoes? Only thing Texans are able to do is piss away dead money and wasted draft picks.

Something else the Texans org has done since their inception.

That's a pretty impressive review of Martin by PFF and yet several guys on his Board say both Fulton & Mancz are better centers than he is ?

Sigh. Yeah I know. Granted that article was early in the year last season, the guy is an elite center in the league when healthy, and that is one thing that seems to be a recurring issue with Martin. Your best ability is availability.

When we signed Fulton, & maybe i'm misremembering, but i could've sworn I remember reading something that said he was best at center even though most of his experience can at the guard spot.

Are people like OBrien learning this?
Right? Seems like the wrong people are the ones learning anything when it comes to the offensive line. O’Brien and Devlin both seem to suffer of info overload and are just coping with it, rather than trying to overcome it.

New #Texans mailbag @theathletichou. We discuss the backup running back situation and one trade Houston might make. https://t.co/ogVrFHFhyQ

The team’s reorganized front office hasn’t made any major moves, but that could change soon. According to a person with knowledge of the team’s thinking, the Texans are interested in trading for another cornerback. Minnesota’s Trae Waynes and Pittsburgh’s Artie Burns are possible targets. But it appears to be a sellers market for corners.

I spent all day in GB yesterday getting to see the players up close. I have a few thoughts.

Howard appears to be our best OL already, which is ridiculous. Kalil holds his own and can be average, but not great.
When are offensive starters are on the field (skill positions) we are VERY hard to stop. The left side of the line appears to be solid, but the right side is no good.
Our front 7 is dominant vs the run, but not great vs the pass. Our secondary has it's bright spots, but consistently lacks good coverage.
Mercilus is not impressive in pass-rushing drills. He is a fighter and can clean up, but cannot make things happen on his own. Clowney needs to come back
President was VERY impressive rushing the passer. Consistently dominating whoever lined up against him with speed and power
