State of the O-line

Other XSF and a bum ankled Martin who have they drafted?

BTW, Gibbs had Winston Pitts iwhen he got here and DB was his pick. Those guys a

Winston was not a very talented player and sucked after Gibbs system..

Pitts was a good quality guard.. not great.

Duane Brown was the only player with top tier talent.. who left and didn't want to play here anymore as did Brooks. Hmm

The strength of those lines weren't, because they had uber talent.. they were coached incredibly, were incredibly smart players for it, knew their assignments and responsibilities, we're incredibly sound in their technique, and could execute with great precision as one unit.. not 5 individuals out on a football field.

The coaching we have here flat out sucks and is doing the players we do bring in a disservice regardless of how talented they may or may not be.

Funny how you would kill to have an ol of DB/Pitts/Myers/Briesel/Winston right now and Schaub set franchise passing records behind that ol.

I would kill to have that line and Gibbs ZBS.. (Cohesive line and proven successful coach coaching it.) I mean, that's kinda my whole point. Mike Devlin will never produce that here.

Not sure what you're getting at with that post??

So your a WC offense/ZBS guy, not a E-P power type of guy?

BTW, they did run ZBS alot last yr.

The point of the post is there's not one OL with the talent level of DB/Winston/Pitts on the team right now.

I'm not hung up on the system.. which is why I put what I did inside the "(__)".

Frankly I don't care which scheme they want to employ, but I do expect them to be able to build and coach the damn thing and all they've proven so far is they can't. That's my problem.

That's because of the coaching and the HC/OC scheme. Nobody on here can truly say what the hell Obrien is running. Other than the game plan will change every freaking week.

2 yrs ago they didn't invest in the OL and suffered the consequences.

Last yr they went the backup OL in FA route, which isn't really investing.

If they dont invest again this yr they will get what they deserve. Watson wont survive another 62 sack seeason.

1. The point is there's nobody on the current OL with the talent level of DB/Pitts/Winston.

2. I like the ability to adjust gameplans

3. Lets add some premium OL talent and see what happens.

4. Devlin is no HOF'er like Gibbs. It amazes me how Devlin has his job.

I know this won't be popular, but I believe, the Texans would be best served by finding a way, to cobble together another pick or player, to couple with our other 2nd round pick, to move up and land McGary ... he is exactly what we need on Watson's other blind side. He will plow a huge row for whoever is running the ball. His pass blocking can be improved .... just as Dillard's run blocking can. That would an awesome beginning for what could become an offensive juggernaut !!
Why not save all draft capital and get guy who doesn't have to work on pass blocking like Scharping whose stats and PFF for years very good?

They already are going to get what they deserve.. they didn't can the worst line coach in the entire league.. Those chickens are already clucking.

Yet, but that point isn't necessarily true.. especially in Winston's case.

Also Gibbs aside, there's plenty of other coaches out there better than Mike "Why am I still here" Devlin.

Basically this year, the Texans should've done to the offensive line staff exactly what they did to the STs staff last offseason.

But nope.. results don't matter here. Let's give him one more year and see how it works out. Literally insanity.

We've played this wait and see game for 5 seasons now. For me I'm done waiting. Five years of data is enough for me. Like Carl stated, " they do not know how to develop their players". Reason being, they're trying to hard be more complicated than they should be. Especially when you're changing 2-4 linemen every freaking year.

And you keep bringing up this premium lineman lol. Man have you not been paying attention. We keep striking out on those supposedsu premium linemen.

I don't disagree with you about Devlin. I would have fired him after last year for the Davenport pick alone . Much less the continual ol suckage.

They do need an upgrade in talent since they decided to neglect the ol the last 2yrs.

I agree, SteelB. This year, the OL needs 2 more good starters. I'm hoping one will turn out to be a real 10 year stud and the other will be a true + lineman. Hoping for more than that would be wonderful but is probably tempting fate. Beyond that, it's unlikely but maybe Devlin will turn a corner this year. Since he's not going anywhere, I have to hope for the best.

Hopefully with more talented players Devlin will look better.

People around these parts have been spoiled by HOF'er Gibbs.

With Devlin as coach there is no way to know that

Sure there is

Look at the combine numbers of DB,Pitts,Wins Winston and compare them to the current OL group. The athleticism in the current OL just isn't there and never will be.

You're thinking that it's all Devlin"s fault. I am telling you Gibbs could coach this group and they would still suck . Please don't take this to mean that I am defending Devlin, because he is not very good at his job either.

I'm on board. As I've posted, I'd like three of our first four picks to be OL'men.

Just to put things in perspective, Davenport was a 4th round draft pick, Kelemete a 5th, Fulton a 6th, Henderson a 7th and Mancz an UDFA.

Damn the torpedoes. Draft three and start them right off from day one.

But I expect two out of the four picks. Less and I'll be PO'ed.

Yep, I expect the same thing. I would be good with 2 OL being picked in the first 3 RDS. Even if that meant trading up for Dillard or Jonah.

Thanks for pointing out why there is a talent problem. Look at where the OL was drafted.

I am guessing be ready to be PO'Ed...the current OL responsible parties (Devlin, BOB, and Gaine) has signed 4 free agent OL, drafted 1 3rd rounder, extended one pre-season 2018, and kept around first contract 2nd and 4th rounders since the end of the season 2017. Basically, the guys currently on the roster are guys that the Texans want and believe fit what they are doing.

I am expecting one (probably RT) in either the 1st/2nd round. Not that two or even more OLmen is a silly idea, but I am following the transactions and time period they have been made.

With more talented players, it would be hard NOT to look better.
For all we know, this could be Devlin's last chance to show his bosses something. If they give him a big dose of good talent and he can't get it right, it may be obvious even to OB that the OL coach position needs an upgrade.

Tell me when is the last time the Texans spent a 1st rd pick on an OL?

Also tell me which rds the current OL were picked in?

Then maybe you will realize why the OL isn't athletic and generally sucks. Devlin only makes the lack of talent issues worse.

I'm watching Path to the Draft as I'm reading the posts. It's amazing to me .... happens every year .... more so now, than it used to be. The closer we get to the draft, the more the talented outliers move up the draft. I just saw where McGovern has moved to #31. I loved the Mac brothers, and none of them were ranked in the 1st round. Now McGary, McCoy, and McGovern are all in the first round .... and this in a draft year that boasted greater numbers of DL, LB, and DB studs than I can remember. The entire league has come to realize .... 1) You better score as many points as you can 2) you better keep the ball away from them as much as possible 3) you almost have to have a franchise QB to lead them .... and .... 4) you better have a solid foundation under them, or they won't last !

Especially #1).
If you don't score many points in this league, you better have an elite defense if you want to win the SB.
And the battles are won in the trenches - it's a no-brainer to build a solid oline to best enhance youe chances to score.
The Colts looked good once their oline clicked last season and even their defense suddenly looked like probowlers due to their increased efforts - fuelled by the great offense, they lifted their game.

If Ned in the first Primer, had been back there, (with a wrong shoulder), his running backs would have more and bigger holes to run through, and even Ned could schluffle pass it .... with his wrong arm !

Football is simply entertainment to me, like movies and TV. The difference being I won't watch what I consider bad TV shows, but I will watch the Texans no matter now bad they are.

I don't make a habit out of making sense anyway.
Not sure why this is here, but i agree.

Exactly. Plus they went with a lot of dink and donk stuff. Got the ball out of Luck's hand fast.
Press Man Covererage would stop this, hopefully we will be capable of doing that this year instead of playing 15 yards off.
Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I'm high.

Wow I didn't know the only athletic players are only in the 1st round.

Steel I see you have a major cosigner. Bwhahaha

You cant have a bunch of 4th rd or later guys and expect to have a good OL. 3rd rd this yr is the latest you can expect to get a guy that can help next yr. I have doubts any of those guys will be there at 86. General theory is the higher the pick the more athletic ability the player has. Exception : Small school guys.

Lol are you really looking at combine numbers!

Lost respect

There's a reason why Winston was one of the top rated LTs coming out yet fell as far as he did? TRex arms and the guy couldn't protect a edge to save his damn life..

Yet now you're trying to pump up our memory of exactly what he was to save face.. sad.

What round was Mike Briesel taken in?, because He was much better here.... wonder why?

About the same area we've always drafted lineman and where the rest of the league drafts lineman... now look at the results.

Oh crap, it's non existent.

Duane Brown was 7 slots away from being a 2nd rounder.. is your entire argument really built around 7 damn slots? If it is, please stop trolling.

Again.. STOP WITH THE FALLACY that this team hasn't invested in the damn line..

I really hate to break the absolute obvious to you, but coaching actually freaking matters here.

Luck looked right when the OL jelled and he was protected properly.

For Christ's sake..

He also looked right when healthy, had a offensive/head coach who played the position and knew what was what, and had Howard ******* Mudd walk through the damn door. (Alex Gibbs, hell anyone remotely competent isn't walking through our door.. not anymore)
Again.. Coaching matters, yet you continue to ignore the glaring obvious just to force feed your narrative, it's becoming extremely sad. FFS

Well said Carr Bombed.
Yea it's true we've got some folks on our Board who are already freakin out about the status of the Texans Oline in 2019. They shall go unnamed but some maybe have
already been fitted for a strait-jackett and/or are presently ungoing intensive therapy. Got to remain cool, just as Brian Gaine is doing.
Speaking of going nutz, it could be that Gaine's disicipline in resisting the temptation to throw a record big-money contract at one Mr Trent Brown (Raiders LT) may be one of the smartest decisions or non-decisions he'll make all year.
In the meantime it's almost Draft time, so soon we will see the Gains strategy for the Texans 2019 Oline.

Also the talent being coached matters.

Look at the Colts OL,

LT, 1st/LG, 1st/C, 1st/RG, late Rd pick/RT 2nd Rd pick.

Texans

LT, 4th rd /LG, 5th rd pick, C, 2nd rd pick/ RG 6th rd pick/RT 7th rd pick.

Yes, Devlin sucks at his job, but surely you can see the difference in the talent levels.

Frame the argument however you like, but check out my post above.

We agree, coaching does matter, and Devlin sucks, but talent matters too.

Not true, some teams, usually the good teams invest in their OL.

I mean, the Chiefs invested the #1 overall pick in a LT. The Eagles a 1st in a RT, the Saints a 1st in a RT. The Rams bought their LT in FA. That's investing in your OL.

Yes the Texans do need a new OL coach, but they also need a major influx of talent and so far that hasn't happened. Like I said this group would suck if Gibbs was coaching it.

Winston was a solid and very athletic RT who fell to the top of the 3rd due to his short arms. He was a good RT who had a long career despite his clubhouse lawyering.

I'm not force feeding anything, the OL has been terrible the last 2 yrs and I predicted it before those seasons started. I will predict they will suck again next yr if they dont fill the glaring holes at the OT positions and adding an OG wouldn't hurt anything either. It's time to draft some new blodd and do away with all of the journeymen OL currently on the roster.

Tell you what, if the Texans draft a couple of highly rated OL and the OL still sucks I'm for firing everybody. Enough of this trying to make chicken salad out of chickensh!t when it comes to the OL.

Not sure why we think this coaching staff will be different then what they've shown. I expect them to do something stupid in this draft, like pick a RB or Lb in round 1, hell I could see a WR just because.

Well, some of us called the 2017 and 2018 OL's being terrible before those drafts and after FA. If they dont add some major talent in the draft then you can expect more of the same old same old. No freaking out here, I'm just telling you what's going to happen next yr just like I told you what was going to happen the last 2 yrs. It really doesn't matter who the OL coach is until the talent gets upgraded. (Not saying Devlin shouldn't have been fired.)

Do you have a problem with me calling my shots after the FA/Draft periods? Sorry but the sky may not be falling but Watson sure will be until some major talent is added to the OL.

I'm thinking OB may want another TE somewhere in between round 2-4.

I hope not.
