2019 Texans free agency

It is actually a very good strategy... Consider the Honey Badger's situation- the Texans got a good year of production, helping them to an 11-5 record. Now, they are in pristine salary cap situation and essentially signed Gipson to replace him at half the cost. As a result, the Texans are likely to net a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick next season. It isn't as if they exclusively sign players to one year "prove it" deals, but they have moved towards shorter free agent deals that they can get free from in a year or two... As a result, if they draft well, they will be able to retain their homegrown talent without have salary dumping seasons.

I think not getting stuck, see Colvin, a better benefit to the prove it deal. Anyway, not so sure the strategy this year is for compensatory picks. The Texans probably don't have the body of exit players to make that happen.

Williams became a full-time starter for the Panthers in 2017, starting all 16 games at right tackle.

On July 28, 2018 during training camp, Williams was carted off the field with an apparent knee injury.[9]It was later revealed that day that Williams dislocated his right kneecap and tore his MCL.[10]Despite the injury, Williams started in the season opener against theDallas Cowboys, however left the game in the fourth quarter with a knee injury.[11]It was confirmed that Williams had re-injured his right knee and would be sidelined indefinitely.[12]He was then placed on injured reserve on September 12, 2018 after deciding to undergo knee surgery.[13]

Only ~60% of athletes return to preinjury performance following isolated patellar dislocation. Williams' injury led to an MCL rupture....... and the re-injury included re-dislocation, and with the MCL already ruptured, these usually are accompanied by articular cartilage damage........therefore, in this case, the 60% is probably too conservative.

It's still early? All the good players gone, but still some tier III left?

And just think of the cap space they'll have next year.

They have $88m next year not counting Clowney, Watson extension, Mercilus, Lamar Miller, Joseph, Nick Martin and Griffin.

That's 6 free agent starters after Clowney and Watson. You can let all of them go but 1) other free agents might not be much cheaper, and if we go cheap they might suck and 2) relying on the draft is no guarantee

And then in 2021 there's $112 million in cap room but in addition to the above players add Fuller, Cunningham, Davenport Mancz, Kelemente, and Hal, not to mention that will be Watt's last year!

So several more starters. After signing Clowney and Watson there really isn't that much cap room to keep or replace all those starters.

Adding another big contract like Trent Brown or Matthieu means you are letting lots of starters go. I mean Clowney and Watson will probably be $50 million alone, and so now we're talking only $30 mil next year and $60 mil in 2021 of capspace

I think you missed the point of my post

Don’t forget about the Broncos and Seahawks.

They drafted well and made some impact fa signings as well.

Maybe the Texans just don’t feel like they are ready.

I wouldnt blame them because I don’t think they are close.

I agree with you

But they gotta protect Watson.

He cant be taking 62 sacks and numerous hits and expect to survive next season particularly against the schedule they're playing next season. I bet Watson got sacked or hit atleast 150 times last yr.

I really wanted Tyrell Williams. Its free agency and players have their choice, but give him a little extra in yrs or money.

The Raiders got a good one.

Adding the Browns and Williams along with Jordy and you know they're going to add a TE, Carr wont have any excuses. I kind of expect them to trade up for Murray, but I think that Gruden is going to give Carr this yr to prove it and if he doesn't I think Gruden will trade up for either Tua or Fromm. Fromm really looks like a Gruden QB to me.

This one year prove it stuff is silly when you dont negotiate in the season. So if I sign a one dear and ball out, I'm gonna test free agency.

Are these guys trying to build up comp picks?
Are you proposing we don’t sign them and get nothing out of it?

At least this way, we get one good year of play plus the comp pick. Sure, I’ll take that!

If Carr fails to deliver and Gruden goes on the prowl for a QB and the Texans stumble again after a false/positive 11-5 season......I'm not completely opposed to trading Watson, yeah Watson, to the Raiders for a Hershal Walker kind of haul.....if possible. I'd then trade off some other big assets and be prepared to start a true rebuilding process with QB, Trevor Lawrence- Clemson as my 2020 target. If the Texans aren't there by natural processes, then they'll need a treasure trove of picks to buy that slot......let the rebuild begin.

Trade Watson?

Say what, trade Watson ? Then you'd need to change your handle to PessimisticTexan.

Herschel Walker type of deal will never happen again

Yet another silly fantasyland post

According to the Chronicle..
The season-long problem of Watson being under heavy duress played out again Sunday in a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The second-year dual-threat quarterback was sacked six times and hit 12 times overall, bringing his season totals to 62 sacks and 133 hits.

JB, you have no more assurances of that, than a cow clearing the moon. If the Texans stunk but Watson had another solid season despite moonlighting as a tackle dummy.....then I wouldn't bet against a Walker type of haul if they made him available. If Carr fails, the Raiders are going to be desperate to find a replacement asap.

Is it going to happen....NO! Again JB, just a message board where we can toss crazy ideas and thoughts around for discussion.

For me, The 1% at best things aren't really worth discussing...assuming health and Watson playing at his current level, he will be a Texans for at least 10 years. Not just because he is a QB in a league where having one is invaluable, but because it is truly not in the nature of the franchise

Well, the good news is Cal has more money to hide under his mattress today. Daddy taught him well.

The bad is they have done absolutely zippo to upgrade this roster and worse - nothing at all to help Watson. No TE, no RB, no Oline help, no WR help. Nothing.

Tell me again about all this space under the cap?

:faildetector:

Biggest problem with a Walker type deal ever happening again is the current Free Agency that was created in 93. Since then you really haven't seen the big deal trades like that any more since players can just hold out on teams till they are F/A or teams can just go shopping to fill spots with stop gaps. Also it helps to have someone like a Jimmy Johnson to pull off a move like that. There are very few in the NFL today I think could do it and none of them are working for the Texans.

Now Covington to the Cowgirls. Wow so much winning in Texans free agency.

I liked Covington. But him, Watkins, Blackson, just wasn't enough. I couldn't see bringing both Covington & Blackson back. I'd have chosen Covington, but I think it's obvious BO'n & I don't see eye to eye.

Hopefully this is a sign we'll be looking to get better at the position in the draft.

LT Matt Kalil has been released by CAR. How did he play last year?
PFF: "Matt Kalil’s $55 million deal is shaping up to be an all-time bad signing. He earned a 63.1 overall grade in 2017 before missing all of 2018 with yet another injury. It will cost them more to cut the soon to be 30-year old tackle than to roster him in 2019, but either way, you likely don’t want him starting."

[Person] Dave Gettleman signed Kalil to a five-year, $55 million contract in 2017. He played in 16 games for the Panthers.
