2019 Texans free agency

I agree that he wasn't better last year. He has been good at times though, and he is about 5 years younger than Jackson. We will see how it works out soon enough. From my perspective, I see the Texans attempting to address an area of weakness, which is what I want to see.

On the cheap

I get it K I really do, but trying to put lipstick on a pig is not going to cut it. Kareem was only 11 for 3 years? Kareem was BY FAR the better player LAST YEAR between he and Roby .. but people like to predict the future like they do with Clowney and his knee . they say that Kareem will all of a sudden be a dud next year why? Because he got paid? Because he's 31? Didnt JJO dispel some of those age related arguments?

You may be high on Roby and it could turn out great, but I get the same feeling I got from the Colvin signing ... TRASH!!

Actually I agree with you. I was just saying he's cheaper, not that I actually am happy with the move
I dont believe that for a minute.

BOB hated the Os signing and Os in general.

you could see it and Cecil Shorts talked about how BOB treated Os in TC.

Yes in TC...it was too late at that point

Putting on my fantasy hat... it appears Clowney is destined to be traded or a holdout into the season.

How about we trade him for Xavier Rhodes? Rhodes already signed to a long term deal and will be cheaper than Clowney’s next contract further freeing up $$$ down the line for DW4 and co.

CB all of a sudden becomes a strength and Texans are off the hook giving long term money to Clowney and his scary knee situation! Make it happen Gaine!!!

That would take forward thinking and spending $$$$, 2 things the Texans org doesn't do.

On the cheap

Perhaps... Two days in, though, I see that they have added two significant pieces to the secondary, getting younger and more athletic, while losing two guys who were clearly overpaid. I think they are managing the cap responsibly and will continue to address needs and spend money to do it. You believe they are making these decisions to be frugal and will be a lesser team heading into the 2019 season as a result... We will see how it plays out. If they do not make at least two more significant additions in free agency/trade this week or next, I will know that you were right.

I don't care if they sign the reincarnation of Deion Sanders in his prime, if they don't address the Oline in a serious way - this FA period is an epic failure.

What are they drinking down on Kirby when they continually ignore the offensive line?

So far, I'd call this the K-Mart FA period. All they are doing is looking for blue light cubic zirconia specials. Meanwhile, other teams are snatching up diamonds.

With the cap space available, that is simply inexcusable.

The Vikes did exactly what the Texans are doing. Not investing in their OL and when injuries hit they were done. Same fate awaits the Texans. The Jags learned their lesson and I bet they invest heavily in their OL in the draft so Foles has a chance to be healthy/effective. Plus with the draft capital they've spent on Robinson/ FA Norwell they are already ahead of where the Texans are.

Two years ago you kept lauding the Vikings and holding them as the team the Texans should emulate because they signed Mike Remmers and Riley Reiff.

Not looking so good now?

To me anyways FA is pick a part in that you don't know what you'll get . The worst thing you can do is over pay for bad . Having said that I don't think players like coming to the Texans . We'll call it Duane Brown syndrome .

They will be fine, they paid the price for not adding to the 2017 OL in the draft and FA. I'm sure they will add in this yrs draft with Kubiak/Dennison there.

the MMQB did this real quick survey after AB turned down the Bills trade. Houston actually finished tied with Philly just outside of the top 5 in most desirable places to go to

That would have been a good signing - having someone anchor one side can really improve the whole line. The contract didn’t seem too outlandish to me as well. I gett not paying the big bucks for Trent Brown and I understand not paying the contract HB got, but this (and the KJax no sign) I don’t understand.
Yeah this one pisses me off. Not only do we miss out on him but he goes to a division rival when he clearly could’ve improved our offense of line and at a fair price.

Gipson is a good FS but he's much better playing over the top than in the box. I assume his signing moves Reid to SS where he will match up with TE's and roll down into the slot. Hal stays in the 3rd Safety / Dime role.

Roby, like Colvin, is a guy who's only NFL success has come inside the hashes but you know they are going to be playing him outside with that contract figure. His best days in Denver were when Talib and Harris locked down the outside and he was used as a versatile space player in the slot.

Tashuan was known as the TE whisperer by his team in Jacksonville because he was known for shutting down TEs. RAC likes to play 2 high safeties each responsible for half of the field as oppose to the traditional FS/SS roles. He has said as much himself

Roby while was the Broncos "nickel" corner actually played on the outside way more than inside. Harris and Talib were the starting 2, they brought Roby in on 3 CB sets hence the "nickel" designation, but he played the majority of his snaps on the outside, Harris played about 70% of his snaps inside against the slot. In short Roby is an outside corner who will continue to play on the outside here unlike Colvin

from a Jags fan:
Gipson, 28, was a good player on the Jaguars defense since he was signed as a free agent in 2016 and some would argue has played at close to a Pro Bowl level. But the Jaguars are going to be moving on from some players to clear cap space and after the team re-signed Jarrod Wilson some thought that Gipson could be on the chopping block.

The Jaguars couldn’t find a suitable trade partner so he tested the waters in free agency and found an interested team quickly.

Best of luck, Tashaun

and
2017 Head coach Doug Marrone named Gipson the starting free safety to begin the regular season, opposite starting strong safety Barry Church.[30] Marrone became Gipson's fifth head coach as a professional over the span of his first six seasons in the league.

He started the Jacksonville Jaguars' season-opener at the Houston Texans and recorded six combined tackles, two pass deflections, and returned an interception by Deshaun Watson for 67 yards in the fourth quarter of their 29–7 victory.[31] On October 1, 2017, he collected a season-high seven solo tackles and broke up a pass during the Jaguars' 23–20 loss at the New York Jets. The following week, Gipson recorded six combined tackles, two pass deflections, and intercepted two passes by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger as the Jaguars routed the Pittsburgh Steelers 30–9

we have jj and jadeveon. we don't need box secondary. Tyrann and kareem can go other teams and have them over pay them. rather build around our real super stars. also wouldn't mind trading jadeveon for better depth and see who will over pay texans for him. if not give him 3-4 year good money contract. he doesn't like then he can walk. we finally have QB we can trust, and it's so much easiler to build team around DW4 type of qb with JJ. I am actually happy with moves we did. saving cap and building around our real super stars.

Haven't kept up with Gipson that much in JAX. When he was in CLE he was one of the best deep safeties in the league. If he was that good in the box for JAX then I like the signing even more. Not sure why so many ITT were initially so upset by his signing. He doesn't have the name recognition of Mathieu but likely a better fit and for less money.

As for Roby, my point was that his best tape was from early in his career when Denver used him in the box as an anti-spread piece. They've used him on the boundary more and more each year and his play has continually declined.

My issue is that it's clear that we're bringing him in as an outside CB despite him having struggled there.

I'm not nearly as excited by his signing as Gipson's. I think CB is still a massive need in the draft.

man love those two signings and develop some young guys from draft. having big names are nice, but I am super happy to have cap with solid players. after seeing them past 2 years with no depth and eagles, pats, and many other teams winning with good depth is really fun to watch.

Texans player injury history suggests we need some cap to use going through season.. just saying.

Maybe it's because I haven't been on the boards in a while, but this is the first time I've seen a positive diagnosis from you Doc :D
Been here since 2004. First time I can remember.

only player that has said negative things after they left was Brooks. Duane Brown said good things, Fitzpatrick said good things, Foster said good things, a whole bunch of former players have had nothing but positive things to say about him
And he may be the most beloved coach ever. The abusive management style still works in some environments.

But I wouldn't really expect anyone to be honest if he made them uncomfortable. Complaining about a boss always comes across as whining even if he was Attila the Hun. And they are in a very small community, it would be stupid to burn any bridges.

It is always better to say "I appreciate the opportunity the Texans gave me and I am excited about my new opportunity" as you slide out the door.

If Tashaun can cover the TE that's an upgrade.

Roby has talent but he was terrible outside last yr.

Wanna be depressed go check out Roby's NYJ's tape last yr.

Texans need to get faster and better in coverage on the outside and over the top. It doesn't matter who the "better" player is between Jackson and Roby... Roby is likely going to upgrade our secondary, because he offers things that Jackson does not. We will see how it works out.
You have always been such a Kool Aid drinker with this f’ing franchise that doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. This franchise has no clue how to build a Super Bowl winner. I was looking forward to the future now that McNair has taken the dirt nap but it is same old song and dance with the dunce son Cal. Let’s look at what this team has done the past few years:

1. Let AJ Bouye walk. Look at the **** CB situation we have

2. Duane Brown. Trade our starting LT and f’ing replace him with Davenport because McNair is a racist son of a *****.

3. Let HB and KJax walk, can’t wait to see how it will impact 2019. I’m sure it will blow up in their faces.

4. Offensive line. HAHA garbage talent

F this team. I’m on Team SteelB

You guys know there are other teams you can enjoy and root for right?

Mildly happy about Roby. Never noticed Gipson.

These guys are younger and cheaper. Performance probably favors jax and hb.
