Texans random thought of the day

610 radio this morning was talking about number of defensive linemen and the quality saying a trade was high possibility. Also, commented that corner Jermaine Kelly would probably go on IR to allow a later pick up a roster spot. I'm still trying to put players and data together but so far I like this offseason [cue my friend steelTexan] and the average age of team dropped a decade losing Lechler. Much is made about the ability of offensive linemen being able to play more positions but that is same for defense.

Looks like Howell was a good ST and all around “team first” kind of player at FAU. Another ST pick for the Texans today:

The 2017 season didn’t play out the same way, as Howell had 56 fewer rushing attempts even though his average was way up at 6.6. Howell did get more playing time on special teams, which served him well during the spring practices when Special Teams Coordinator Darren Rizzi mentioned him among those who had impressed.

“I felt like me standing on the sideline I was just a waste,” Howell said. “So being able to go on special teams and use my big body to dominate opponents, I was happy about it. I didn’t really give him any side talk, I was just happy to be a part of the team. That’s something I’ve always been grateful about. I never got selfish. It was frustrating. I’m not going to sit here and say I’m not a human being; it’s frustrating not getting the ball sometimes. You’ve got to get past frustration to have a little fun. Once I got past that, (FAU coach Lane) Kiffin just told me, I’m going to put you on special teams because that’s something in the NFL that’s going to help you survive. I thank him a lot for that and I’m very grateful that he made that move.”

I am very excited about Natrell Jamerson. I have a feeling the Texans were targeting him in the 6th... possibly where they took Duke Ejiofor. As it stands, I will consider him the Texans 5th round pick this season!

Can’t believe the Saints let him go despite having a very good secondary. His ST contributions should be plentiful for the Texans this season and hopefully beyond. Plus athlete that has been moved around throughout his college career and again with the Saints this offseason. Hopefully the Texans keep it simple and let him learn just one position on defense while being a ST ace.

Raiders reportedly shopping Karl Joseph. Texans were rumored to want to trade up to get him when he was drafted. If he could be had for a late round pick i’d love to take a flyer on him. Crennel could get the most out of that guy if he’s healthy.

I like this offseason.

I just would've spent whatever it took to keep Watson healthy.

C+ but considering their lack of draft picks I will give their off season a solid B

It's U. of H.'s program that makes them good, not their coaching. UT spent a fortune to find out Tom Herman is nothing special, and he can't fix the run-of-the-mill football program they have there. (It hasn't always been that way. I went to both schools.)

First thing that jumps out with [Buddy] Howell is that he is nothing nice to tackle. He breaks tackles at a high level.

[Why did the Dolphins cut him?] They actually know how to scout RBs. They are packed with talent at that position.

Howell also has the ability to work out of the slot. Did it for Miami, that is key. Catches the ball easy, good hands.

Big thing that sticks out in limited footage is he does not go down at first contact. A trait our RBs have been lacking.

For those that believe that he was taken on to be a 3rd down back.:
“Good size, 1st/2nd down back. Liked what we saw on film on offense and on special teams. So, we took a shot and see how it goes.” Bill O’Brien on claimed rookie RB Buddy Howell. #Texans

He mentioned in an article I posted that he embraced ST his senior year to get on the field more. He is a team first player much like what has kept Alfred Blue around. OB clearly values that highly in RBs.

He looks like a 3 down back to me. Limited looks, but I really like what I see so far. Good scouting job to pick him up.

FoxFS1 is currently showing NFL Films team-by-team season review; the Texans will be up at 8:30 pm Central. The AFCS will start with Jax at 7:00.

Wait.... they gave Foster's number to a CB??

More importantly, they gave Ed Reed's number to another safety??
Jk.. I do agree tho that 23 should be retired, but I guess for a defensive player is more excusable than when Tyler freakin Ervin first picked 23

Stephen Anderson was worked out by the Pats today. Don't be surprised to see him signed........pick his brain.......and quickly release him thereafter.

Retiring numbers should be for HoF players.

Don't get me wrong, Arian was the bomb, beautiful runner and it would have been nice to see him have a long career, but he didn't.

Well if this team hasn't had a better RB in the next 16 years then you may need to modify your requirements.

Pat Starr's impressions

Our thoughts on Buddy Howell joining the Texans is laid out below.

The Rundown
  • from Coconut Grove, FL, went to Coral Gables Senior High,
  • 6’1”, 225 lbs.,
  • 22 years old,
  • Went to Florida Atlantic University,
  • Howell is a rookie free agent out of FAU, where he averaged 5.5 yards per carry and, oddly, only caught 5 passes his entire college career during 27 games. He had 19 rushing touchdowns with a season high of 13 in 2016. Howell averaged 6.6 yards a carry in 2017 on 112 carries and only had 10 carries or more in 5 games in 2017.
Stats at FAU
What We are Concerned About
  • Howell is going to have to get better in pass protection,
  • Wasn’t asked to be part of the passing game in FAU,
  • Can he play special teams, especially coverage teams?
  • Can he transition to a 1st/2nd down back for the Texans?
  • How quickly can he pick up the offensive scheme for the Texans?
  • Howell is the complete package as a back, but only in a small sample size against non-starters in the NFL during the preseason,
  • No real breakaway speed.
What We Like
  • Catches the ball better than expected,
  • Not afraid to get downhill and get his pad level pointed toward the line of scrimmage,
  • Breaks tackles consistently,
  • So many positive plays when the ball hit his hands,
  • Strong frame for the position.
  • Good vision,
  • Has the skill set to be a complete back in the NFL,
  • Showed he can line up in the slot and catch the football,
  • Quicker that expected,

Overall View of Buddy Howell
There is plenty to like with the rookie running back and if he was with the Texans the entire preseason, he would have made the roster heading into the final 53. The fact is that Howell flashed with the Dolphins and there was an instant thought that he seemed to play much better than any Texans back did this preseason.

Tempered expectations are always advised, but Howell looks to be a guy who could slide into the 3rd down role for the Texans and there is a chance that he will be asked to play special teams even though he has never really done that previously. Howell is being added to a current backfield of Lamar Miller and Alfred Blue, and is going to be part of that trio until D’Onta Foreman returns after six games.

There is reason to be optimistic with Howell and his skill set, but the starting job will be Lamar Miller’s show until further notice.

The point of tjth article to me is,.

If teams want to sign a guy they can always find the money.

# Norwell, Solder etc...
Yes, they could have. For some reason, though, Texans didn’t think those guys were worth it. I know you think it was a directive from McNair to not invest that much. IMO, it was a BOB/Gaine decision. We’ll just have to wait and see if it all works out for us.
