Texans random thought of the day

I would like to see Allen on the left side as he was in KC before I write him off. There just my be something to that left-right thing
Agree.
Having said that, one wonders why he is not being used there. It is difficult to imagine that O'Brien hasn't tried him there in practice so it does make you wonder.

TK does have a good point.
If you have an all pro line, you don't have much cash left to spend on other shiny objects.
For mine, you need a combination of both worlds - good coaching and competent talent.
Olines usually take time to gel and a competent QB helps as well.

Ricky didn't spend any $$$$ this off-season.

In FA,

He's still sitting on a pile of cash. Meanwhile the OL is bad and he chose not to re-sign Bouye. Shockingly the secondary stinks and Ricky for some reason chose to keep the $$$$ and not improve the team. Why do you think Ricky chose not to improve the team.

Money spent is money spent. No matter what it's for personnel-wise it's from the same pile.

And I'm not apologizing for Smith for this offseason and the specific result of this oline. Just saying it's not as cut and dry as he didn't spend any money. I don't know what his plan was or how things changed as developments came about and why he did or didn't make any one decision or another. And frankly neither does any other fan so I'm not sure what kind of answer you're looking for with your loaded question at the end there.

No loaded questions here.

I just found what Ricky did or more importantly didn't do very interesting and was looking for your opinion, which I value very much.

Not a fan of the result, like I said and we've discussed before, as I would've preferred to see something in the way of an upgrade to the line. Especially after The Great Os Purge. That much I can say definitively. What I can't say is that Rick made an intentional decision to not improve the team, so as your question assumed.

And that part there is where the rift occurs in discussing this team with you. I appreciate the kind words, certainly as I consider you an educated and worthwhile fan to exchange ideas with. That is barring your tinfoil assumptions when you've decidedly dug your heels in to only see this team through Rick Smith-soiled glasses. Could talk with you on this board, or in person I'm sure, till the sun comes up about all things Texans (or football in general for that matter) be it not for that one ever-looming angle.

Bit of a rant there, but for what it's worth the point is just to continue good football talk with a good football dude here.

Bwhahaha here we go again. How in the world you don't think he didn't improve the team? We have a top 4 offense now. Nobody including Rick thought the defense would take this huge step backwards. Not even you Steel.

Drafting a legit starting QB improves this team. Look at the red zone production verses last season around this time. Vastly improvement right there bud.

He meant in free agency.

No actually he means big ticket free agency because the Texans re-signed a number of their guys who were UFA and signed several depth FAs.

Well sure, that being what I mentioned with him earlier. Just differentiating these from the draft as to what texanball848442 was saying.

He got them a QB... We're not crying about Cushing's suspension because Ricky brought in Cunningham & Cole. He also brought in a tougher power runner which should improve the team... if we'd use him.

The only reason most sane people, who weren't sodomized by Rick Smith, would think this team is not better would be because DB76 decided he needed more money, & we lost Watt & Mercilus to injury.

& for all I know, in regard to the OL Bill probably told Rick, "I got this, just get me a freak'n QB."

All good points.
Can you imagine this team's D going forward if Watt, Cushing, Johnson and Mercilus were all healthy?
I and many others have said for a few years now that Texans are just a QB away and a rookie is proving that to be true.

Not necessarily big ticket FA's. But. Ricky certainly had the $$$$ to make a big fa signing. Or even re-signing his own in Bouye. Ricky didn't even sign a 2nd Tier fa. He litteraly did nothing in fa and I find that to be curios way of doing business, since the rest of the NFL didn't do business this way and why people think Ricky chose to go this way. It's a legitimate question, some here just have problems wit the question because I'm the one asking it. I understand why but they need to get past that and answer what they believe is going on in the Texans organization.

One thing is for sure the offense has improved under BOB'S direction, much to the dismay of many on this MB.

Betting on all/any of those guys being /staying healthy is fools gold as CND pointed out before the season began.

I would have rather drafted Dawkins in the 2nd than Cunningham and said as much at the time. Still wish Ricky would have gone in that direction today.. Gotta protect your investment in your rookie qb at all costs. Imho

I think Devlin did a good job with pretty much this same bunch last season... with a slow baby giraffe in the backfield. Good run production, middle of the pack surrendering sacks... I very well may find another area of the team warrants a higher priority.

What's the point of paying position coaches if you have to supply all-pros before they can field a competent unit? As much as we want to complain, last year's OL was competent.

If he could do the draft over right now, maybe he would. But he can't. Other than Duane Brown, there aren't any studs out there waiting by their phone. So what's he going to do? Right now, not a lot more he can do. It's time for the coaches to go to work.
D B mucho better than Clark and Newton pre-knees 1000 times better than Giancomini. Latter worst lineman NFL. Allowing QB pressures; 28 IIRC

Never said they would be - I said imagine. It is well within the realm of possibility to have three of the four available though.
So you buy another super D dude or two for mega bucks putting you deeper in the cap hole - counterproductive for your super Oline.

The Texans have invested in the offensive line. I don't think you can argue against that.
  • 1st round pick on Duane Brown
  • 1st pick in the 2nd round on XSF
  • Traded up in 2nd round for Nick Martin
  • Paid significant money to sign Jeff Allen
  • Paid significant money to retain Derek Newton
Rick did NOT totally ignore the OL. Besides Derek Newton (not much we can do with him right now), the players need to simply step up and validate the price we paid for them.

DB needs to show up.
Everyone had XSF as a low first, high second round player. He was graded by most as the best guard in the draft. The dude needs to play like as expected.
Jeff Allen was a good guard in KC and was one of the highest rated guards in FA. He needs to warrant his salary.
Need to see if police have Warrent for him..get him off field. He has to be grateful to Giancomini taking Allen's role as worst online player on field.

One thing that is for sure is the O looked like horse crap again under OB's direction until Watson went into the game. A player you swore was rammed down OB's throat by Smith & McNair. A QB OB could have put 2-3 times as much development priority on this off-season.

Yeah I would like Dion also OG or OT but Cunningham's gonna be very good.

Maybe the price paid was higher than market value? Funny thing about the risks with investing. It takes a keen eye to know which stocks will provide more growth over a certain time period than others. Smith is much, much better at picking blue chip stocks than he is pork belly futures.

This is completely untrue. CnD has given us all ample, not to mention very accurate, information that we shouldn't rely on Watt or JD on defense. No one could've predicted Merci's injury, but Watt is on IR and JD made it through walk through practices after playing with his hand in the dirt (just as predicted by CnD). KJO has also been predicted by CnD and where has he been the last few weeks? Oh yeah...on the sidelines.

We didn't have Watt and Johnson for more than half the season. So why would anybody count on them playing a full season. I know I didn't think they would. It doesn't take a Rocket scientist to figure that out. As far as Clowney, he wasn't predicted to miss a great number of games either. And who predicted Cushing to miss 10 games?

This is true.

According to BOB I had it exactly backwards.

Not if you had drafted Dawkins this year and hit on a ol pick next year.

Right....you're all rainbows and unicorns. What serious fan has counted on Cushing in years? I'm in far too much pain and far too lazy to look up any posts of you contradicting yourself here. I'm going to let it lie.

Hope you get well soon

You are one tough guy. I wouldn't wish what you are going through on my worst enemy.

Don't know what you know about my situation, but I was up for 30 hours and spent 14 hours in 3 different ERs to get sent home with antibiotics at 7 am this morning. Pay close attention to your appendix. It freaking sux if you don't.

Dawkins did look good in his first start at RT.

But as you can see we actually needed a LB to replace Cushing.

The draft is hit or miss. And so far Cunningham has not been a disappointment.

Agreed,

Give me the OL, that way you can control the clock and keep the defense rested and off the field in addition to protecting your young investment.

To each their own, but until Ricky fixes the OL the Texans wont be true contenders.

I don't think it's just up to Ricky to fix the OL. OB's choices at OL coach have been massive failures. The dude from ATL was atrocious and Devlin not much, if any, better. Much like Kubiak had a problem hiring a DC, someone needs to step in and fix OB's blind side at OL coach

Talent does need to be added badly.

But I would love to see Hudson Houck as the Texans OL coach.

Health has been a thorn in our offensive side for years now. They've brought in FA who for some reason didn't pan out or got injured. I wish we would've kept both Brooks and Aboushi ( spelled his name incorrect).

But they probably thought they were good since they saw improvement last season.
They also saw our LB crew get torched in the passing game. So a LB with cover skills had to be more important. In that playoffs game against the Patriots was the deciding factor probably.

I agree with this and would've liked Ricky to fix the OL 1st, then draft guys like Cole, Marquel Lee later in the draft.

We're still paying for this !
