College football season

Baylor loses to Liberty. Woe in Waco.

I never get tired of Baylor losing.

As UH alum, nothing is bringing more of a smile to my face right now than to see UT & mr. Hermann getting that ass whipped by Maryland. It's just his 1st game and all, but just like with Briles and Sumlin, these guys will eventually realize that the grass isn't always greener.

Texas needs to sort of put it together because if Hermann falls flat on his face up there those bastards might just be back for Applewhite if he manages to be successful. I kind of feel like UH won't be able to really make any progress until the big two schools in Texas (UT & A&M) are out of the coach hunting business.

As enjoyable as all of these losses were last weekend, I think I enjoyed the Aggie loss the most given it's epic proportion and the ensuing hilarity from so many distraught Aggies.

Granted. It was a better "quality" loss from the perspective of a bitter Cougar (which I am) who has been a) Screwed out of a spot in a major conference by Baylor at the end of the SWC and b) Coach-Poached by all three of those teams.

A&M though, "Wow!". A&M did it in memorable fashion while the other two just sucked. All were gratifying but the A&M choke was downright entertaining.

Doesn't he have a lawsuit or something pending with them? If that's the case, i wonder how that would factor into them bringing him back in the future. In any event, Will Muschamp is still out there I think they'd go after him before Applewhite since he was at one time HC in waiting & they at least know he has some pedigree as a HC in a P5 conference and he provides a link to past glory years...

Applewhite won't be back at UT. From what I recall, he cheated on his pregnant wife with a member of the training staff that reported to him.

Not only is that a bad look from a moral perspective (there are limits to how much people care about that), but creating that type of relationship with somebody in the athletic department that works under you just doesn't fly. He basically got caught doing the same thing as Petrino without crashing his motorcycle.

Or if the University of Houston can ever be voted into the Big 12 Conference that would likely solve a lot of our problems. Tom Herman would have never left U of H had we been voted into the Big 12 last year. He would have received a $5 million dollar bonus had that happened, along with an annual pay raise. It would have netted him more money from Houston, at least in the short term for 2017 and 2018 (next two seasons), compared to what the Texas Longhorns had paid him on their large multi-year contract that runs into 2021.

We need to move into a Power Five Conference.
If that happens we'll be able to keep any head coach, IMO.

Agreed about Baylor

Butt hurt much

As a UH fan yeah... but why would any power 5 conference want UH?

Why wouldn't a power 5 conference want UH? All that school does is keep getting better. It's just a matter of time if they keep spending the money and winning on the field. The one thing that seems to be consistent with conference realignment is that it never seems to stop.

Agreed...my thing is, if we're supposedly a lesser school and can't offer anything, what the hell does Iowa State & K-State offer & why fear letting us in the Big 12? As it stands now the big 12 shouldn't even be considered a power 5 conference. It's just a matter of time before UH gets invited into a power 5 imo...Especially with Fertitta stepping up to help Khator.

Screw pandering to OU and the 9 dwarves. Let UT & OU run it into the ground b/c they're scared to compete for recruits. I'd like to see UH go to the ACC and offer that conference a foothold in the Texas market recruiting wise that it doesn't really have right now.

It is a dream I have (The ACC). I've also read (just rumors and talk really) that UH might not be a bad fit for the Big10 if they decide to add a couple of teams. With Nebraska over there and in the middle of the country picking up UH might not be a bad move to give the conference wider exposure across the Big 12's territory. It's all speculation and wishful thinking but something will happen at some point. I think it is inevitable.

The hate of UT runs deep?

UT is going to do what's best for UT financially.

It's always been this way and will always be this way. UH doesn't bring enough to the table financially to become a power 5 school. This has very little to do with recruiting.

What early game to watch?

I settled for the Louisville vs. UNC game on ESPN. Lamar Jackson is fun to watch. 3 TDs so far (2 passing, 1 rushing). Almost 300 yards passing with no INTs. He also has another 90 rushing yards with a 43-yard scamper.

Louisville leads 27-21 early in the third quarter.

There in lies their problem. They have been quite the Cheapskates these last few years.

Cougars are just kind of a mess tonight. Up 19-10 right now but I hardly expect that to last. They just look like they're looking for an excuse to fall apart for some reason.

They are outplaying Arizona but the penalties are keeping it too close.

Isn't Arizona supposed to be really good this year? Or maybe I've mistaken their football team with their basketball team. I'm just glad U of H won! Way to go, Major Applewhite.

It wasn't pretty but a 19-16 win is still a win and especially to take a hard fought game on the road. I thought Kyle Allen at quarterback had a gutsy game returning home (Arizona native) - 25 for 32 and 78 % completions, but he did throw two picks.

I caught the tail end of this game on ESPN U just around midnight as I was half asleep. It didn't look good for a couple minutes in the fourth quarter but the Cougs held on with ball control when it mattered most. Thankfully Arizona's quarterback situation was dicey at best. Had they had competent quarterback play we'd likely have lost.

I'm jealous of Arizona being in the Pac-12 Conference though.
Even they're in a Power 5 Conference. We should be also.

Stop it please. We've heard this nonsense perpetuated for far too long and the reality is that adding UH to the conference would have next to no negative impact on their finances.

I contend it would have a positive one simply b/c the proximity of the schools, the large alumni base here in Houston and the old SWC ties..the reality of it is the schools in the conference now obviously don't bring as much to the conference as they think that's why it is going to the shiter and the only "real" negative impact they stand to lose is in recruiting.

You underestimate their fear. Again, why fear if we're just little old UH?

I'm hoping it's rust and being a week behind. Allen did not impress consistently but he did flash from time to time and I think (again "hope") that's just what happens when you don't play football for a year. I think as they go along and get a few more games under their belts things will tighten up. The penalties were troubling but should improve.

It's too bad that UH fans have this syndrome with UT. Texas is the only school fighting for UH to get into the Big XII.

It's the out of state schools that keep blocking the vote, because they think the state of Texas already has too much representation in the conference with 40% of the teams.

8 of the 10 schools have to approve any additions. And Kansas, Kansas St, Iowa St, and Oklahoma St have no interest in competing with UH. You'd have to flip two of those schools to get UH in.

Clemson is extremely well coached. Venables will get hired as a HC somewhere of note after this season.

TAMU please. Either him, or if it's possible to wrench Dan Mullen away from Miss State, him. Assuming the team doesn't miraculously improve and bail Sumlin's ass out for another season.

I sure enjoyed the outcome. Gotta admit that. Also have to admit that how it got there was a little off.

Still, always enjoy seeing a UT loss no matter what the circumstances.

Yeah it's bad when even the haters are calling you and telling you "WTF!"..Which my brother in law (Florida State fan) did. Just for starters apparently illegal hands to the face is not a penalty in college football

I about fell out of my chair when USC fans started chanting "bullshit" after a obvious incomplete call was upheld.

Kyle Allen was 31 for 33 for 309 yds last night. I don't even remember the 2 incompletions. Of course, we were playing Rice.

Dude that was so frustrating. Horns couldn't catch a break and the refs were pro USC.

UT D matched up perfectly with USC but what the hell made Herman morph into OB? That offensive gameplay was trash.

I wouldn't get used to it. Dude throws mind boggling picks under pressure. He'll be fine for most of AAC play, but if you get into a shootout with Memphis or SMU, he'll mess up.

That's the best Texas has looked in at least four years. They have something in that freshman QB. I'd stick with him.

It's too bad their best RB can't stay in a game because he is a total b*tch and won't block anybody even though he's 240+ lbs. They have to run him off for the backup in any situation that might require blocking.

Their OL is in shreds now that Williams is out. Gonna be tough for them to run the ball each week.

Any chance that the Texas Longhorns stud left tackle, Connor Williams, will drop into the Houston Texans lap in the third or fourth round now? Or will he still be a projected first-round pick? There is no timetable set for his return. He sustained a sprain of the medial and posterior collateral ligaments in addition to a meniscus tear.

we don't have enough injured players?

He's a junior so he will probably return to school next year after the injury instead of coming out (which was likely the plan before the season).

eh, me thinks that UT/USC game was more about USC not being as good as hyped than it was Texas actually being better than people think. Hermann has a tendency to dial up the trickeration..especially when his teams are playing against teams with supposed superior talent...That was a big part in how he evened the playing field a little at UH and how he was able to amass that 6-0 record against ranked opponents. He tried to go to that well against USC saturday and that **** wasn't working...Expect that record against ranked opponents to take more hits as teams get the book on him.

He looks fine to me, or at least OK.
I had watched the two games in which he threw multiple picks, and they were understandable, not the WTF types.
Alabama (3) and Arizona (2).
He threw just 7 picks in each of the previous two years.
I think I can live with that.

QBs who caught my eye this past weekend:

Steven Montez, Colorado
Will Grier, West Virginia
Nick Fitzgerald, Mississippi State

And to think all Ricky had to do was fix the OL in the 2017 draft and draft their QB next yr.

Fitzgerald reminds me of Watson.

My guess is those 3 will return and be eligible for the 2019 draft.

Different Offense than Watson, same O that Dak played. Also stronger arm and much better accuracy.

Grier really stands out to me. Seems to have all the tools. Also the fact that he was a solid QB at Florida speaks massive volumes to me considering how horrid their QB play has been under McElwain.

Montez has a lot of work to do. Colorado does a really good job on offense of giving the QB easy reads. When he gets pressured he gets into trouble. Needs to get more consistent. I'd like to see him perform against an actual defense this year instead of the cupcakes they've played so far.

There is a lot to like there with Fitzgerald but I find his accuracy to be troubling. Very hit or miss.

Let's go Houston Cougars!

Big game at 11 AM against high-powered Texas Tech on Saturday morning. I believe ABC (locally) and ESPN2 will both air this game around the country.

I expect an exciting shootout. The Cougars will need to make a few key defensive stops, but otherwise this could be a very high-scoring game.

Texas Tech's quarterback, Nick Shimonek, threw for 543 yards and 6 TDs in a 52-45 win over Arizona State last game. So Kyle Allen will likely need to match that kid and throw like he's never thrown before.

The Cougars try to reach 3-0 with two quality wins over power five conference schools in back-to-back weeks. A win over Texas Tech should get them closer to a top 25 ranking.

Still very early but here are some observations from the first few weeks.

IMPRESSED SO FAR

RB Ronald Jones, USC
- Shut down in the run game by Texas but still found a way to contribute with a long TD catch and run. This guy is just electric. Can do just about everything.
RB John Kelly, Tennessee - Not on any watch lists or draft boards. This dude lit up Georgia Tech and Florida.
FB Dimitri Flowers, Oklahoma - He has showcased ability as an every down FB. He can run, block, and catch.
WR Anthony Miller, Memphis - Extremely productive player. Brings it in big games too. His most productive games are against the best opponents.
TE Troy Fumagalli, Wisconsin - Extremely versatile. Wisconsin doesn't use him enough but he still gets numbers. Best three games last year were LSU, Ohio St, and in the Cotton Bowl.
OG Damian Prince, Maryland - Looked out of place previously as an OT but this dude has been a machine at OG. He's an absolute mauler in the run game and he's pretty athletic too.
DE Bradley Chubb, North Carolina St - Great production the last two years, backed by a strong opening performance against South Carolina.
LB Josey Jewell, Iowa - Tackle machine the last two years. Dominated the Wyoming game.
LB Mike McCray, Michigan - Caught my eye last year. Struggles a little in space but this guy makes plays.
CB Duke Dawson, Florida - Not a great prospect but underrated, IMO. May have been the best player not named John Kelly on the field in the Tennessee game.

NOT IMPRESSED SO FAR
QB Josh Allen, Wyoming
- Total bust against both teams scouts wanted to see him against. Year is far from over but at this point I'm seeing a guy that needs another year of college.
TE Hayden Hurst, South Carolina - Getting first round hype in some circles. I don't see it. He's a ht/wt/sp guy without the production to back up the evaluation. He's also the oldest player on the field in every game he plays.
OG Braden Smith, Auburn - Not getting a lot of help from his partners on the OL but I see a good athlete who is protected by scheme. I do not see very much technique here. Considered the best OL in the nation by some?
EDGE Harold Landry, Boston College - Insane production last year. Not off to a hot start so far. Notre Dame took him totally out of the game.
LB Malik Jefferson, Texas - Never been impressed. Extremely athletic but soft and timid. Bad traits for a LB. He did have the best game of his career against USC so maybe he's turning it around.

FAVORITE UNDERCLASSMEN SO FAR
LB Devin Bush, Michigan
- Not eligible for the draft until after next season. I'm in love with this guy. He's almost perfect and only a true sophomore. He's the best player on a Michigan team that is absolutely loaded with athletes.

DT Ed Oliver, Houston: Should be at the top of any list of "impressed so far!" He's the best player in all of college football right now. He just doesn't receive all of the accolades and national hype because he'e a defensive tackle and plays at U of H. He'd have his own weekly segment on ESPN's College Gameday if he played at a power five conference school. He should be the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft once he declares.

We agree on Grier.

What I liked about Montez is for such a big guy he sure is light on his feet and he moves extremely well in the pocket but yes he is raw and young.

We agree on Fitzgerald but last Saturday was one of those hits against a good LSU D. LSU missing Fournette.

Most of my comments at this point are based on weekly performances and not so much the college career.
