Day 3 NFL Draft Discussion

from ESPN draft notes...

Decoud is a hard worker and confident player with the frame and length to provide depth in zone- and press-heavy schemes. He doesn't have great scheme versatility, though, and his athletic limitations could prevent him from developing into a starter.

This draft is a Rick Smith/Bill O'Brian reset. Better class than one they should of had when they owned first picks every round (2014). Or maybe it's just all relative? This is certainly a much stronger class overall.

Not to be too negative - I have been on this board since the Cushing draft. Every single draft was considered rather positive at first. I think every single one got a B+ overall from most users here.

We usually draft guys at least close to where they should go - and we usually address several needs and add in some luxury picks. When you read the scouting analysis, there is usually enough nice things to find. And at the end, we all want the excitement of what the player could be for us...

That being said, I really like the draft so far. After reading up on Watson and listening to many interviews, he is a guy I am really rooting for. Plus it is way more interesting to see, how a QB is doing, or an ILB and an HB, than how an O-line-men or a CB is doing. So, the next few months will be really exciting.

Well that's hardly flattering. Here is what Lance had to say.

NFL.com's Lance Zierlein: "Has outstanding size with long arms. Recognizes misdirection and plays with decent football instincts. Patient feet from press coverage. Can be physical through the route. Quick to body up and crowd an outside release against the sideline. Experienced in a variety of coverage. Held talented Cal wideout, Chad Hansen, to just four catches for sixteen yards. Eyeballs quarterback from zone and has good response time relative to quarterback's release. Aggressive tackler who steps downhill looking to finish in run support. Works off of blocks and into tackle position. Drives into his target, wraps, and tackles. Gets behind early when pressing receivers with release quickness off the snap. Backpedals from a narrow base with labored feet. Will lose some balance and body control when forced to transition against in-breaking routes. Takes way too many false steps when attempting to sink and trigger on the throw from his pedal. Doesn't have the sudden closing burst to defend what he sees in coverage. Had just two interceptions (both in one game) over 104 targets. Play speed is slightly below average. Unable to squeeze routes enough to make quarterbacks uncomfortable from off-man. Treston's size and physicality are two traits that some teams will covet on draft day, but there are some coverage limitations that push him towards a cover-2 defense. DeCoud lacks the trigger quickness to close separation windows that open against him, so a team may try and convert him into a free safety role where his coverage and tackling may be a fit as a backup."

So Smith had no idea, that makes sense cause, yikes
Jadeveon Clowney DE South Carolina - was considered a generational talent. Bad luck with injuries
33 Xavier Su'a-Filo G UCLA - was considered the best or second best G of the whole draft class
65 C.J. Fiedorowicz TE Iowa - this board was ecstatic about him, best blocking TE of the draft that can also catch some balls
83 Louis Nix DT Notre Dame - again, this board was ecstatic. He was supposed to go much higher and addressed a major need
135 Tom Savage QB Pittsburgh - development QB with all the tools, that was held back because he didn't play much
177 Jeoffrey Pagan DE Alabama - adressed a need and was taken at a point, when he was supposed to
181 Alfred Blue RB LSU - another board favorite
211 Jay Prosch FB Auburn - best FB of the class, ST ace
216 Andre Hal DB Vanderbilt - good depth
216 Drew Howell LS Oregon
256 Lonnie Ballentine

Just to give some perspective of what most of us thought back then... including the scouts and analysts...

Good free safety prospect late in the day. If Texans had a 6th they might have waited but really wanted him and address need.

Jay Prosch had a quietly good year in 2016. He was laying some wood & opening some holes. If he continues to improve...

I say we do average in the draft. Except in 2013 with hopkins being the exception. That was a bad draft. It's just the amount of times we have passed on QBs over the years that leave a sour taste.

Haha, loved Fiedo pick. Took him awhile but he looks like player expected. X still here, still waiting. Clowney had a rough, rough start but flashed third year into a beast. Everybody likes Nix, total bust totally unexpected. Savage just teases and oozes talent but can't stay on the field. Pagan seemed like a solid rotational DT then disappeared. Blue was LSU connection. Porsch maybe victim of FB position being fazed out, bad timing? Loved Hal pick and he has proven to be best bargain of group. Ballentine high boom but even higher bust.

Also I would like to point out, seems like the quietest draft ever on tapatalk. Where did everybody go.

Can Fuller play Guard? I'd figure he's potential inside depth. I don't know the kid, but I like the position this late in the draft, especially if he is versatile and could play all 3 inside spots.

The T we picked could be our swing tackle to start, but if he can get his technique down, he COULD be a long term fix at RT. Physically, he's got it all. I've had my eye on him for a good while if we had to wait for a T.

We addressed the Oline - perhaps later than we all wanted, but it's more competition and depth. I can't really complain.

I think Mancz is likely the same - inside depth at C and G, but he could push either Allen or X man at LG. Mancz was a pleasant surprise last year.

Assuming good health, I see Martin at C, Mancz or X at LG and Mancz/Allen at RG.

Fuller could be an OC or OG. Nice versatile addition to the OL.

That's 6 players who should contribute on some level in 2017. Deshaun Watson will probably spend 2017 with a clipboard while getting a crash course in NFL QB 101. This could very well be defined as the Texans best and deepest drafts.

I missed something, why did the Redskins have our 6th round pick?
For moving up to get Will Fuller last year

The Washington Redskins on Thursday evening selected in the early 20’s of the 2016 NFL Draft as expected, however, they traded first-round picks with the Houston Texans, sending the No. 21 pick to Houston in exchange for the No. 22 pick. The Redskins also obtained a 2017 sixth-round pick from the Texans.
Houston would select Notre Dame wide receiver Will Fuller with the 21st-overall pick, while Washington picked TCU wide receiver Josh Doctson

Boys and girls...don your thinking caps and lets identify some UDFA's. There's some quality depth there for the taking and it's not going to be crazy if more than a few of these players push for a roster spot or development time on the PS.

So forecasting for camp I'm seeing an O-Line of...

LT - Duane Brown / Kendall Lamm
LG - Xavier Su'a-Filo / Kyle Fuller
C - Nick Martin
RG - Jeff Allen / Greg Mancz
RT - Chris Clark / Julie'n Davenport

Both Fuller and Mancz can slide inside and play Center.

What's the take on fuller? Is it possible he moves to RG as well? Haven't watched much of him that I can recall.

LZ didn't seem confident he could but at the same time said it's hard to evaluate Baylor OL because they get rid of the ball so fast. Sure the coaching staff thinks he can.
