NFL Random Thought of the Day

As a Texans' fan, it doesn't "matter".
But I thought it interesting he didn't opt to retire as a Colt since they drafted him and - from what I've heard - will (have they already?) retire his number. There's also talk about a Peyton statue in front of the stadium (can't find a link)

I didn't mean to come at you in a snarky way with that, I guess I just don't get any significance with all the one-day retirement contract type stuff.

None of any of it prohibits anything else .. statues, retired numbers, HoF induction, etc.

Peyton decides to retire as a Bronco, not a Colt. Surprised?
LINK

sorry if there's already a thread about this... I didn't see it.

That story says he gave serious thought to retiring as a Colt, but decided against it. Probably means he didn't want to go through the trouble. The Broncos would have had to released him, then he'd have to sign a deal with the Colts. Then he could retire as a Colt.

Some were saying that's why he was taking so long to decide, that he wanted to force the Broncos to cut him so he could try to sign with another team, if he wanted to play another year. The other side of that argument was that the Broncos would want him to retire, without releasing him. That way if he changed his mind, ala Favre, they would have some control about where he would go. The Packers didn't want Favre in the division, they forced him to the Jets for one year.

Craig Sager says doctor gave him diagnosis of 3-6 months to live

Little chance that further treatment is effective. The stem cell procedures he has undergone in bone marrow transplants from a donor. This procedure repeated has much more toxicity, and often the body organs cannot tolerate a second transplant. In studies that looked at giving a second,, the relapse rates after the procedure were very high, in some studies as high as 100%. There is no reason to believe that a third would ever be successful. Prayers for Saeger and his family.

Rams agreed to draft Michael Sam to avoid doing Hard Knocks 2 years ago. Cutting a backdoor deal like that is pretty much par for the course for Goodell.

That might be true, but didn't Sam benefit from it?

I would argue that it didn't benefit him at all and that it actually had the opposite effect. He could have gone undrafted and been invited into a camp as a free agent by a team actually interested in his ability. Instead he was bought as a bargaining chip by a team with a loaded D-Line that clearly was only using him as leverage to get out of a mandatory Hard Knocks appearance.

With the media frenzy around him he really only had one shot to make a first impression. Instead of going into camp with a team that had a poor pass rush, he went into camp with a team that went 10-deep on the DL and had no intention of keeping him right out of the gate. Once he got cut and the other teams saw the absolute circus the media turned his story into they all backed off (except for Dallas who loves to get itself some attention).

"Mount Cody"...........a mountain of poor humanity.........

Ex-Ravens DT Terrence Cody sentenced to nine months for animal cruelty conviction
Posted March 26, 2016 ·

Former Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Terrence Cody was sentenced to nine months in jail, 18 months supervised probation and mandatory mental health treatment for his conviction in an animal cruelty case on multiple misdemeanor charges.

Cody’s dog, Taz, starved to death, allegedly by the former NFL player.

Cody could have gone to jail for more than two years.

Cody suffers from depression, according to his lawyer.

Cody said the dog was suffering from worms.

Cody purchased the dog for $8,000.

The dog once weighed 100 pounds. The dog died at less than 50 pounds.

He was cut last year by the Ravens after being indicted.

Cody illegally possessed an alligator and had drug paraphernalia.

Cody’s girlfriend, Kourtney Kelley, was convicted and sentenced to 50 days and then paroled.

Will the excuses ever end? He was always a likely camp cut even IF he was drafted. He didn't get better because he was Gay, only more notorious.

I never thought he was any good to begin with. Just pointing out that he would have benefited by being brought in by a DL needy team instead of being bought as a bargaining chip by a team with a loaded DL.

Aldon Smith, another fine citizen, has recently been re-signed by the Raiders. Mid November last year was when he was suspended for 1 year. But as being conjectured by some, in line with the NFL definitely dragging their feet with Josh Gordon's reinstatement, it would not be a stretch to say that the Raiders may not have the services of Smith very long or at all during the 2016 season.

Wade still uses much bigger players up front. This is what Denver's two deep looks like right now.

LE: 6-2 305, 6-3 284
RE: 6-5 285, 6-4 285

WOLB: 6-4 258, 6-3 245
SOLB: 6-3 250, 6-2 250

Clowney is way closer to LB size in this system than he is to DE size. Playing 5 lbs lighter is much easier than playing 20 lbs stronger.

I wonder how much them asking him to take a paycut has to do with it...

I was reading that the NFL covering concussion issues also played a part in his sudden retirement.

Here's the kicker with him, he was eligible to play in 10,708 snaps. He played 10,707. That one was some special play where they pulled all the OL and ran only skill players. Dude "missed" 1 snap in 10 years. That is amazing.

Suspended [four games] Falcons corner Jalen Collins violated NFL performance-enhancing drug policy

Looks like teams are going to have to assign designated pissers.:spy:

But no suspension for Strong.
Yeah, but to put it in a little perspective, in August of 2014, Le'Veon Bell and Legarrette Blount were arrested for marijuana possession, and in the case of Bell, there was a possible DUI issue too (don't remember the details, not going to bother to look them up).

Long story short, the suspensions (3 games - later reduced to 2 games for Bell, and one game for Blount) were handed down in April of 2015. Maybe it had to do with letting the legal system run it's course (again, don't know - not going to bother finding out), but it took approx. 8 months and beyond the entire following regular/post season for things to happen.

With no charges apparently being filed against Strong, and no prior history of this that we know of, perhaps he will get off with a fine/warning, and a February incident could well be finalized before or during the 2016 sason. But I still don't think that Strong not being included in any of the suspensions handed down today means much - if anything.

Judge refuses to restore Patriots’ first-round draft pick
April 9, 2016, 12:58 PM EDT

A group of Patriots fans has sued the NFL in an effort to restore the first-round draft pick that was confiscated as part of the #Deflategate punishment. A judge has quickly chimed in regarding an attempt to get the pick back in time for this month’s draft.

Via the Boston Herald, Judge F. Dennis Saylor has summarily denied the request to replenish the pick pending the outcome of the litigation.

“After reviewing the complaint, it appears highly unlikely that plaintiffs will succeed on the merits of any of their claims,” Judge Saylor wrote.

It was as dramatic a slam dunk as a court can deliver.

“The Court is denying plaintiffs’ motion without the benefit of an evidentiary hearing or an opposition brief,” the order explains. “However, the federal courts are courts of limited resources, funded by the taxpayers, and it would not be a prudent expenditure of those resources to permit the motion to progress to the hearing stage.”

Judge Saylor’s assessment of the lawsuit hints strongly at the possibility of an award of litigation costs and other penalties against Seth Carey, the Maine lawyer who signed the civil complaint. The Federal Rules of Civil Procedure prohibit frivolous filings, allowing for a wide range of sanctions.

Although the courts rarely dirty their hands by meting out so-called Rule 11 punishments, Judge Saylor’s initial reaction to this specific lawsuit suggests that a much stronger reaction could be coming later.

I'm pretty sure Bell & Blount were already in the program when that happened.
I'm not talking about the penalties imposed - I'm talking about the length of time it took to levy those penalties. Chances are the NFL will make certain that everything's finalized with the Scottsdale Police - and if necessary courts - before any final decision is made.

That would be nice, they seem to jump the gun on everything else.

I'm partially joking, it would make sense if they do wait.

Broncos have traded Ryan Clady to the Jets and he has taken a new 2 year contract.

5th to Broncos and 7th to Jets.

Clears room for the Broncos. Addresses a desperate need for the Jets.
