SLACK OFF FOR GOFF

For everyone saying Obrien had his chance to draft a QB, please thrill me and tell me who should've been the face of the franchise now

Any number of them .... minus Mariota & Rapist Winston he had the chance to draft any QB he wanted in the last two drafts and hasn't hitched his wagon to any of them.

If the offense was this bad with a rookie or second year QB .... I think we could chalk up the ineptitude to player development but these two have been in the league 5 years plus .... The Cleveland Browns walked away from Hoyerable that shoulda been enough reason right there to RUN AWAY!

So we draft a QB this offseason and he gets to suck for a year or more and we will accept it as adjusting to the speed of the NFL game .... So we're basically 4 years behind where we would have been had OB taken a QB in his first draft. (Save me the Savage mess - He's not going to save us)

I'm not personally saying Savage is the answer. But know folks are just fishing for an excuse that OB blew his chance. Since the Obrien era, there hasn't been any real good QB prospects via the draft or FA Do folks think Obrien is just that dumb and will just settle and draft anyone just for the sake of it??

You know what sucks? OB, his staff and Smith will likely be back next season

What's his contract look like?

Bridgewater has played well at times , Garappolo looked solid in preseason .... JohnnyFootball has had his moments , Bortles might be better on a better team ....

The success of an NFL QB has a lot to do with where he lands and who the coaches are.

At this point, OB has done nothing to show he can take a rookie player and make them better, let alone a rookie qb. Having Strong out there dominating last night and OB having no real legit excuse as to why he hasn't been playing tells me all I need to know

So, there really isn't a definitive answer. None of these guys would be that much better on this team. You don't draft a player especially QB, "just because "

Strong was NOT dominating. The first TD was just bad coverage on the Colts secondary, the second was off blown coverage

If Rick Smith is our GM next year I quit the Texans. I would rather be a Cowboy fan than root for a team that has Smith at the helm.
Why not go support a winning team with an impressive history (in the current century, not the 20th century), like the Patriots or the Packers or the Steelers ?

Beat off for Goff!

Yep!

Like the below better

Too long. Players can't focus long enough to remember it, much less repeat the mantra in their heads as they play.

I can picture Hopkins saying, "Goof for Goff, Goof for Goff, Goof for GOFF!" as he was spun around and fired the ball at the DB.

At 1-4 it wouldn't be impossible for us to land a top five pick. Maybe even a top three pick. The first overall pick would require us to lose to the Titans, Jaguars and Dolphins. We have five winnable games left. I still think we're going to end up 6-10 or 7-9. Which would be the 13th, 14th pick pick or so? Either way I would definitely draft a quarterback in the first round. Regardless of where we end up pick wise.

What on earth are you basing this one. This defense just got shredded by Matt Hasselbeck, Andre Johnson, and Frank Gore.

I don't think the Titans, Jaguars and Dolphins are as good as the Colts are. Andre Johnson made some big plays for us just last season. The dude can still play. Frank Gore isn't chopped liver. Those old guys can ball. The problem is at their age they're probably only good for one big game every month. Last night was their monthly time to shine. On national TV and in primetime no less. Everybody saw it coming. Which is why people played those guys in fantasy leagues.

But truth be told, the way we're playing, we will probably find a way to lose all five of those games against the Titans, Jaguars and Dolphins. If that's the case then I wouldn't rule out a third 2-14 season for this Texans franchise. Maybe we can top our two worst records and finish 1-15 - losing out. LOL

With our luck we end up with the #1 pick and Goff returns for his senior year.
What if we get the #1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. And the Green Bay Packers offer us Aaron Rodgers for Wisconsin native J.J. Watt and the #1 overall pick? Too much to give up for an elite quarterback or not?

As we've seen the #1 overall picks don't generally land guaranteed superstars. Carr was a bust, Clowney is average, in year two (fair enough), so far coming off injury and Mario Williams was good but not great. He's been great with the Bills though. Since leaving Houston. It's safe to say, for now, Mario Williams is the best player of all the three #1 overall picks we had selected.

I say "He likes wearing #99" and thank him for his time as a Texan.

Jared Goff: (ESPN Stats)
6'4"
215 lbs

Teddy Bridgewater: (combine stats)
6'2"
214 lbs

Teddy was too frail, according to some. Guess we should remove Goff from the list now.

I'd rather have Goff and Watt than Rodgers and no Watt.

It's more of a gamble, yes, but it's a gamble to have my cake and eat it too, so ok.

You may be right. But we would have to trust that Bill O'Brien can coach him up into something special. He probably can. Aaron Rodgers had some great coaching in Green Bay, he would credit a lot of his success to Mike McCarthy, before he became an elite starter.

Jared Goff and Bill O'Brien could become a match made in heaven.
We'll see though. At 1-4 we would have to keep losing to land him.

If O'Brien couldn't coach him I'd have no problem moving on to the coach who could.

Teddy Bridgewater looked smaller than he actually was. Charlie Strong leaned on him to win games. It wasn't the type of pro offense that you see with some of these other elite quarterback prospects. In the end Teddy fell in the draft from a potential #1 overall pick to last pick in the first round.

The way Jared Goff stands in the pocket and delivers a beautifully thrown deep pass, along with amazing touch passes (amazing accuracy) is what playing quarterback is all about. He can rocket the pass, take some zip off it when needed. He almost reminds me of Troy Aikman and Aaron Rodgers put together. He has the full compliment of skills. He can also throw well on the run. Great pocket passer and out-of-pocket passer.

I bet Bill O'Brien is salivating over something like that.

For everyone saying Obrien had his chance to draft a QB, please thrill me and tell me who should've been the face of the franchise now. Hell you can even mention a FA
IMO, you draft QBs early, every freaking year, until you find one because it doesn't matter if you draft a JJ Watt, you won't win consistently in this league without a QB and until you have one, all those other draft picks don't mean jack.

The Texans had plenty of opportunities to take QBs (Garoppolo, Bridgewater, Carr) and instead got Xavier Su'a-Filo. And even if X turned out to be an All-Pro stud solidifying the left side of your line until Brown probably retires, you're still not going to be a year in year out contender like Green Bay, New England, Indy, etc. until you get a freaking QB.

You're not going to win consistently in this league with the Fitzpatrick's and Hoyer's of the world. I get taking a chance with Mallett, being unproven and all, but you still should have had an early drafted QB in here with him.

Not that I think he'd end up being that QB, but it sucks that Savage is on IR because I'd rather do this season with him, to find out, and if not, draft ANOTHER QB next year.

I'm tired of having a football team that sucks year in and year out while Pats fan is experiencing playoffs EVERY year. I'll bet that's pretty sweet.

GET A VUCKING QB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why not just win as many as we can? It's not like the number 1 pick has ever helped us?

Well it's not up to us how many games the team wins. We can only hope and wish.

But It's not like wishing that they win a lot and show up in big games has ever helped either.

Admittedly, I haven't watched a boatload of footage of Goff. Currently, from what I have seen, I don't think he's a top 5 pick. I know I'll get flamed for this, but I'd go Bosa

That's it - avoid risk by not drafting a quarterback! Do the safe thing.

On an unrelated note, I see Clowney hurt his ankle. How many games did that take? How many different injuries is that?

You have to factor in the coaching he can receive at the pro level into your analysis. Some people thought Aaron Rodgers wasn't going to be a good NFL quarterback. He fell quite a bit in his draft and wasn't selected in the top five. Mike McCarthy coached him up and he got to sit and learn for a while behind Brett Favre.

Jared Goff can do a lot of things as well as I've seen. Even his weaknesses seem to be fixable with some good coaching. He can become an All Pro quarterback in the NFL with good coaching and progression.

His journey may be different, than say an Aaron Rodgers, because he could potentially start right away as a rookie. Especially if a team like the Houston Texans end up with him.

You can work with the skill set that Jared Goff has. That much is certain. He can play in any pro system in the NFL. He's very adaptable and intelligent. His arm is as golden as they come. Bill O'Brien's system is complicated. I bet Goff could master it.

I bet Bill O'Brien is salivating over something like that.

He makes impressive throws, but there are hardly clips in that montage of him throwing while under pressure. The pocket is either clean, or he's outside the pocket.

The thing is, nobody knows. Blake Bortles anyone? EJ Manuel? Jake Locker? Blaine Gabbert? Mark Sanchez? Jamarcus Russel? There's no science to this, rhyme nor reason, it's just flat out luck. And you've got to keep picking until you hit on Russel Wilson, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco.

I mean look at the QBs drafted through the years and see how very few are good solid starters that win consistently. Then look at the majority of those draft picks who aren't very good or you've never even heard of.

It isn't easy finding that QB or everyone would have one. But with the way this league is, you've got to keep at it until you get one or you will never win year in and year out. That's just the way it is.

I've compared him to Troy Aikman and Aaron Rodgers. He'd probably be more like Troy Aikman. Starting right away as a rookie, maybe getting sacked and hit a ton like Aikman did on lousy teams his first two or three years in the NFL.

But once you have talent around him, especially on the offensive line, we should see Jared Goff play some great football in the NFL. And the Texans, talent wise, don't have the worst offensive line I've seen.

It's not great or good but there are worst out there in the NFL. It's not like Goff would be playing for an historically bad offensive line like the expansion 2002 Texans had for David Carr. Or even the 1989 Cowboys had for Troy Aikman. Those were some God awful offensive lines.

We'll probably need another franchise running back (Arian Foster replacement for the long haul), and another young stud or two on the offensive line, but those can come.

When you have a franchise quarterback you can then focus on what's around him. All I know is without a good quarterback your team is never going to go anywhere. So it's worth the gamble. Sure, we may land another David Carr or we may land another Troy Aikman.

You just never know. But you always have to try and land a quarterback.
