If the Texans want to win now I think they should try to get a veteran QB. If the the Chargers miss the playoffs I think they will look into trading Philip Rivers for a high pick so they can draft QB and rebuild. Cutler and Vick are both free agent. So out of the three which one would you rather see in Texans uniform

I'd rather see us get a seasoned QB such as Rivers, than take the years to develop a QB in a system that has yet to prove itself as stable, when it comes to QB molding. The high draft picks could be used to acquire talent also sorely needed in other positions, or trade down to get more experienced players.

The key to a good team is a mix of experienced players and hopeful young players.

Not that interested in any of them. Although, Rivers or Cutler could always have a big year potentially. Rivers just has the worst release I've ever seen. Not that it's ever held him back. I just don't know if this season is an anomaly for him. Cutler has a lot of skills, but his attitude is just strange and gets in his own way.

I have no idea why Vick is even on this list. He is a terrible passer and always has been other then one season in his entire career. No way he can stay healthy either way.

With a better Oline, I think that Keenum is just as good as any of these options and I'm not really sold on Keenum anymore.

I put Philip Rivers ONLY if Whisenhunt came to Houston. The guy can do wonders with QBs. Do you think it is any coonencedence that rivers is having a bounce back year this year? Nope. It's because of Whisenhunt.

Vick - are you kidding me? Can't stay healthy.

Cutler - he has his head up his ass most of the time. Too inconsistent.

Schaub - you must be kidding...

You should have had a "none of the above, keep the pick option". That's probably what I would have chosen.

This is probably going to be Rivers' best year as a pro. But last year was probably his worst. He's got to be in the right situation. His release really, really gives me bad HWWNBN flashbacks. I'd probably give a 3rd or a 4th for him. But why on earth would San Diego trade him when they've got a 2nd year coach who seems to know how to get the best out of him?

Cutler has thrown for more than 4000 yards exactly once in his entire career and his QB rating has never broken 90. He's the classic case of a guy that's got all of the potential in the world but who's never been able to put it all together. I don't expect him to go Rich Gannon on us and suddenly put it together now. So. No.

Michael Vick? No. You're lucky to get 3000 yards out of him. He's just not very good.

I'd prefer to draft someone and go through a year of them learning on the field (and possibly performing like some recent rookie QBs have) as opposed to bringing in someone for a disgruntled year.

Would rather have Rivers of the ones you mention, but not for a high pick. Therefore:

You wouldn't even trade a 2nd and 3rd for Rivers?

lol, hell no. I would rather Rick Smith blow the 3rd round pick like he does every year, and then blame someone else for it.

Plus, if you bring in Rivers you have to pay Rivers his market value, which is WAYYY too much for Texans to get under cap with. We can't pay 2 middling QBs a combined Joe Flacco salary.

I'd prefer that we keep whatever picks we'd spend getting a veteran QB but if it absolutely was going to be one of the guys you listed I'd take Rivers.

None of those guys. Either Case makes it or he doesn't. If he doesn't, then draft a QB.

You guys are out of your mind. you rather have scrub bridgewater than Philip freaking Rivers. I hope Rick Smith doesn't read this forum.

wow some of you really do not know what you are asking. You keep Keenum and draft a rookie QB, you are looking at a possible losing season, again. Andrew Luck or Russel Wilson is not in this draft, not even close.

Rivers is under contract for 3 more years and already has his money of 39 mil from San Diego. I'm not gonna get into the whole cap number game, I'll leave that to someone with more time on their hands, but if the Texans wanted to win now, as in next year, you hire Whisenhunt and you find a way to get Rivers in a Texans uni.

He is 32, could have him for next 3-4 years and find the future QB with in that time frame. He is still got an arm and can sling it all over the yard and with him throwing to AJ and Hopkins, you are asking for a winner. SD is a hell of allot closer to rebuilding than the Texans are, so you could package a nice deal to win now.

YES!

AND YES!!!!

NO!!! Too rich of a draft class to trade picks for Rivers. In fact, that's probably one of the dumbest things I've heard this season...

WOW!! :gun:

So you would rather roll the dice on an unknown commodity than a QB that is proven and can help you win right now?

ooookey dokey. Get ready for another losing season...

I think he looks at it from the perspective that none of these QB's would likely lead the Texans to a SB, and picking one of them up would likely waste two or more seasons to decisively figure that out, and then you are right back to square one again turning that entire process into a 5 year plan perhaps after you pick a QB in the draft when Cutler or Rivers doesn't work out so well. On the flip side, if you picked the right QB now that can develop it might take a season or two and they're taking the league by storm possibly especially now days where young QB's are finding success almost right away in several cases. (Luck, RG3, Wilson, Kaepernick). I'm not saying his way of thinking is right or yours is wrong, but I can understand his perspective and yours as well. It just boils down to how well you think one of these QB's on this list can help you and if you think they are capable of taking your team to a SB or not.

Of the choices given and playing devil's advocate, I'd take Rivers. I'm not sure of the compensation I'd give for him but a trade for Schaub, W. Smith, and Newton straight up sounds pretty good. I would add Newton but that would probably be a deal breaker for the Bolts.

And I totally get that. My perspective would be that the core of this team is not getting any younger. In fact I would say that they are in their prime right now, or close to getting there. Some are even pushing past their prime so can the Texans really afford to draft a QB and hope he develops quickly enough to the speed and the ferocity of the NFL before the core of the team is either past their prime or gone?

IMO nobody in this draft is Luck or Russel or a QB that can change a franchise withing the next couple of years and by the time they do start to turn into those QBs, how many of those core players are you now going to have to replace?

6 one way, half a dozen the other I guess...

How do you know this? I'm sure if anyone on this board said that Russell Wilson was the best guy to draft two years ago most people would have told you to stop smoking something. There always could be a hidden gem in there somewhere.

Should hold out until they agree to take McCain and Keo too

I wonder which one the OP was on when he created this thread.

Well said. This thread is a joke. You can't afford any of these QBs after you sign JJ Watt and we will likely need to let go of countless guys on this team. Not actively sign expensive, middle of the road (at best) QBs.

By some of you, do you mean...yourself?

Under contract for 2 more years after this season ends. He's looked "rejuvenated", OK, maybe. He also looks like a guy that lost what it had to be an NFL QB for 2 years. I don't need a guy who had it, lost it, and might have found it again. I'd prefer to start from scratch with a guy that has it. Teddy B.

Here is the whole cap number game (it basically means impossible if you resign JJ Watt, and it took me about 30 seconds to go the website and pull this): http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/san-diego-chargers/philip-rivers/

Ken Wiz is a joke. No one can argue what he's done this year though. He's helped take a 2012 team that won 7 games into a 2013 team that will win, well... 7 games (1 @ Denver, 1 vs. KC left on schedule). Dude is a loser and a joke, and why he is getting credit for doing what Mike McCoy has done is beyond me. That guy will pull Matt Lionheart out of his hot tub and try to start him for us again.

McCown looked damn good tonight...

Strange Kubiak never gave him much a chance

If people are looking only at W-L, they could argue for VY also. He has a good W-L% but I donp;t want him on my team.

Wilson has turned out to be a huge pick for Pete Carroll, but don;t forget the absolute granite stones Carroll showed by starting Wilson over big FA pick up Matt Flynn. Not many coaches pull that move. Maybe 2 or 3 in the NFL.

Luck may end up being a greta QB, but so far it's been smoke and mirrors with him. The TEAM is winning and he gets the lion's share of the credit. The Colts defense has been very good the last 2 seasons and get little to no credit.

LOL. I like your wishful thinking style, but let me run a scenario at you real quick...

You've worked your whole life to become an NFL GM. You got it bro, you made it! You landed your dream job and just became the GM of the San Diego Chargers.

Some clown from Houston has called you and pulled you away from playing "Deer Hunter" on your phone in the bathroom to pitch you a trade offer.

You get back to your desk to see the deal is your newly "Rejuvenated" franchise QB Phillip Rivers and in return you get Matt Schaub, Derek Newton, and Wade Smith. BTW, Rivers only has 4.5 mill guaranteed left on his deal and Schaub has 10.5.

Do you, as the Chargers GM, accept that deal?

How often will we get number 1 pick? Let's get a franchise QB named Bridgewater!

Hopefully never again after we draft Bridgewater with this one.

Surely you didn't think I was being serious. I guess I need to be more liberal with my use of the sarcasm smilie.

Actually, I thought the whole point of the thread was sarcasm. None of the scenarios are likely or even really feasible.

Hah, fair enough. I guess I've been throw off by this whole thread.

I'm assuming it was sarcastic when you said the Colts have been a good defense the last 2 years as well?

The Colts D has been good the last 2 years. Much better than when Manning was QB. Don't let stats screw up your perception. Remember that the Texans had the #1 D through 9 games this season.

But Trestman did.

He has a history of working wonders with QBs, going back nearly 30 years.

It's inexcusable the NFL powers-that-be banished Trestman to Canada. Shame on them for thinking a nerdy Jewish guy, who had left football to practice law, didn't "fit the mold" of an NFL head coach.

But give the Bears credit for giving him a shot, and it's paying off. He's helped turn Cutler, and now McCown, into good QBs.

BTW: a ridiculous poll. (And Vick and Schaub's names are misspelled.)

How much have you actually watched Luck? The dude has been damn good. Hell, he has broken records for come from behind victories this early in his career. I can't believe that some of you are still questioning Luck as far as being a solid QB. Go look at where Manning was in his 2nd season, and I can tell you he wasn't setting the world on fire. He was still playing with Mora where Mora was insulting his play all over the media. Luck may not be elite yet, but he is a damn good QB already.

Manning didn't always have bad defenses every year in Indy. The 2nd year they went to the SB they had one of the best defenses in the league. They were top 10 for sure. And the year they won the SB was when Sanders came back from injury and when he was healthy he made that entire defense a completely different one. He was a defensive player of the year one season. In that post season run, the Colts had a very good defense. Sanders could rarely stay healthy though.
